Villa 3-0 Everton 1999 Full Match
« on: March 08, 2014, 08:18:11 AM »

Two from Joachim, 3rd from Merson. The last game in our great six month run from that season before it all went wrong in the last 3 months or so. Sigh.

I remember getting a ST letter from the club during that season. I forget what they were writing to us about, but I'll always remember the last line of the letter.

"P.S. -  Champions League, here we come!"

Hell at that point I actually felt we could win the title

It all went downhill soon after that game. Just fell apart.

But boy wasn't Lee Hendrie good? Some of his passing, vision and shooting ability was Scolesesque. Joachim had his attributes too. Villa attacks seem to be always heavily based around pace...Joachim, through to Vassell and now Gabby.

I have never ever seen a Villa striker win as many penalties in one season as Joachim did that year. He was amazing that year.

We were really good at the back that season, up until we lost Ehiogu to injury and just had no decent back up to him. He was fantastic that season too.

Hendrie was one of those players who had the potential for greatness but could never quite attain it. Partly attitude, partly playing many games in too rigid systems which didn't suit him (too many games playing right mid in a flat 4-4-2 for example) The sad part is, we're probably crying out for a player like Hendrie in our side now.

If this was a Monday night game, I had an accumulator bet riding on this game.

Happy to say I bet on the Villa to win.

Don't remember that at all, what a front line we had then.

It's a shame we couldn't sustain that till the end of the season. It would have been great to have at least finished top 4 with a squad made up of pretty much all British players, bar I think Bosnich, and the Italian lad Ferraritestarossaresi.
Some very good players we had then too.

Merson and Collymore, £13m worth of intent on the bench.

We went from joint top and looking like challenging properly for the title to nil in weeks. After that Everton game we got 2 points from 10 games! Awful period to support what looked like a very good team.

Losing Bozzy early on in that season was massive aswell, Oakes just couldn't cut it long term as a number one.

Everton were annually fighting relegation during that period and we regularly beat them comfortably at VP.

That was the beginning of the end for that era and brought to an end an astonishing run in the league from when Gregory took over the previous February.

We lost at home to third-tier Fulham at home in the FA Cup the following weekend, managed by Kevin Keegan. Collymore, I think went awol for the game, as did the entire team on the pitch. Keegan was England manager within six months.

End of an era alright, the 00s weren't nearly as good as the 90s for us.

The second half of the 00s were good under O'Neil, a lot better than the first five years under GT Mk II and DOL that's for sure.
