When the European Cup went missing

Ha ha, I love the plyers from back in the day. they were right beer monsters, i remeber hearing about when they went to the cotteridge working mens club a wreaking havoc. different game now thou unfortunatly.

I remember waking up to hear about it on the radio and was surprised to find it had been taken from the pub down the road from us in Tamworth the night before.
It was taken by a Londoner called Adrian, living just up the road from the Fox in Coton Green. He took it up to show off to his Sheffield Uni mates before handing it into the police up there!
And if the Mail claim to have an exclusive interview with this guy Adrian, don't believe them - he was killed in London a few years ago.
If the Mail check their own archives they'll find his full name. If not, they should try the Tamworth Herald archives - not difficult for a proper journalist... although expecting a Mail journo to deal in research and truth is asking a lot I guess.

This is the closest story to the truth so far....

Any reason why the BBC did a story on this?  Was it so many years to the day?

You’re right there, Steveo though I’m not sure how kindly we would look on the players now if they were out drinking after a poor performance.

My favourite Villa booze story came about from my barber the summer after we won the League in 1981. He was based at the Scott Arms but used to drink in the Buccaneer in Streetly, where Gordon Cowans was among the regulars, together with a few team mates. The summer after we won the League in 1981, Villa went on a tour of America and the players went at it big time. Sid told Dave the barber that the night before a friendly they had a real party night and got to bed in the early morning and weren’t too fresh for the match.  During the warm up it became obvious that one of our flair players was still so pissed he was a danger to himself and he had to be substituted before kick off.

No it's nothing to do with an anniversary - the story came to light last week because a producer from Radio 4's "You and Yours" spotted the photo in a Sheffield police station when interviewing a copper on a different story.

Forget Blues, they're never going to get close to winning it, but it is certainly something for Roman Abramovich to contemplate: Aston Villa have had the European Cup nicked more times than you've managed to buy it for Chelsea.

Funnily enough the European cup was displayed at Asda Minworth on Saturday.  It was all part of some Coca Cola promotion I think.  Lots of kids having their photos taken with it as suited Villa stewards looking on protectivly of the cup.  There was even a draw whereby you could win two season tickets.

Cue the Blue nose family....shaven headed father clad in ill fitting dog shit shirt far too tight for his blubbered mass, with shorts revealing a bollocks tattoo covering an over sized calf muscle, he looked a sight.  Amusing though to see his wife and offspring hurriedly filling out their applications to win Villa season tickets, the look of disgust on his face was priceless.
