Anyway it's nowhere near as bad as the kit we wore against Rotherham in 1953! Yikes!

I'm sure John Russell wrote about it once. Something about both team's first and change kits clashing. Or ours was in the wash. I'll ask him.

From the same website..............Villa continued to wear white until December 1956 but from time to time when playing in the FA Cup Villa would borrow a set of shirts from Birmingham City (who occasionally turned out in Villa's claret and blue). Under the rules of the FA Cup at the time, both teams were required to change when colours clashed: if their change shirts also clashed one or both teams would borrow a set from another club. Villa played in blue shirts against Rotherham in February 1953 while Birmingham played in claret and blue against Chelsea on the same day. The last time that Villa borrowed a set of City's strips was in the Sixth Round against Burnley in 1957 when they wore Birmingham's red and white change strip in the replay.

Well you learn something everyday. 

Perhaps that's why we haven't won the Cup since 1957: we haven't played in a kit borrowed from the Noses...

On a separate note, when was the rule changed about both finalists having to change their kit if it clashed?  Nowadays you hear about a toss of the coin when there is a clash, e.g. in the all-blue finals of 2008 - 2010.  However, remembering finals of the more distant past:

1971 - Arsenal changed, but Liverpool stayed in red

1980 - both West Ham and Arsenal changed

1982 - both Spurs and QPR changed

1990 - Man Utd changed for the first match, Palace changed for the replay.

The 1969-70 home kit was shockingly untraditional as Villa, swept up on a wave of new optimism under Tommy Docherty and Doug Ellis, set about moving the club forward into the future, signing young players like the Riochs, Chico, Pat McMahon, etc.
It was so shocking to some (no sky blue sleeves and sky blue shorts) that letters of complaint rolled into the Evening Mail and the club, and as the Doc's team imploded and he was sacked, one of Vic Crowe's first decisions was to bring back the season before's kit to give the fans a lift.
We all know what happened next....

I've still got a 69/70 home shirt, in good condition as well. It may not have been traditional but it has a lot going for it compared to shirts of these days, principally 100% cotton and a beautiful embroidered badge.

In fact style wise it was the template for the home shirt of the following 4 seasons the only change being the colour of the sleeves and I suppose ultimately the badge in 73/74.
