Neither Young nor Warnock are wing backs and they're essential to making that formation work. What I think will happen in practice is they'll get pushed back and we'll be overrun in midfield

think thats probably nail on head. Can't say i'm not too sure the midfield won't be overrun anyway

I think that formation has had its day. I don't think Young and Warnock have enough in them to play the wing back role which requries an awful lot of energy.

I wouldn't play N'Zogbia in the hole either. I've seen one or two on here suggest it but I think he should be on the wing, particularly when we yhave players like Ireland and Bannan who can play that role.

Amen to that

Wing backs please no

It's hard enough trying to get full backs just to defend

If we'd kept Walker and got Naughton on the other side, there might be a rationale for it. However, the main reason that it would not be right is that the current trend for teams to play with one recognised striker would mean that the back 3 would be marking one guy. As said above, that would mean we'd be light elsewhere around the pitch.
Our current plight lies in midfield: deal with that and the existing back four doesn't look quite as bad as you make out, ASHTON.
For mobile, tenacious midfielders in our current squad who wouldm cover the fullbacks, Hogg would be the best bet; but - judging on pre-sesaon line-ups - McGinge doesn't seem to agree.

I'd say it's a reasonable option for the occasional game where we feel we need to get solid.

We dropped Charlie Aitken and played three centre halves at Bournemouth. I think we lost 3-0, if my memory is correct, so would oppose the motion.

The only place I'd ever play 3 at the back is at Stoke.

Everywhere else play a back 4.
