S K BRANN
« on: July 10, 2011, 02:28:21 PM »
Can anyone remember us playing a friendly against some team called S K Brann ? I think it was when Ron Saunders was the manager and we won something like 10 -0 and it was a midweek game at Villa Park .I was at the game and can't remember anything else about the game.

In 1975-76 we played them twice. Won 11-0 at Villa Park, won 1-0 over there, according to "The Encyclopaedia of Aston Villa".

Why did we play them over two legs as we drew Royal Antwerp in the UEFA Cup, so it wasn't a cup game?

I don't think it was over two legs. The enclyopaedia lists a few friendlies between them so I guess one was played before or near the start of the season, one towards the end. Some sort of reciprocal agreement I guess.

A bit more research reveals it was played on 4th November 1975.

Found a link to a site where you could buy the programme from HERE.

I honestly cannot remember this but I must have gone as I went to virtually everything then.
Having said that SK Brann (of Bergen ?) is in my consciousness as a team we played.
Whenever I see a list of obscure European fixtures, there are just 2 types of teams, those we have had contact with and those we havent. For example, looking at the upcoming 2nd qualifying round of the champions league on teletext I noted amongst others Litex Lovech. There were obviously other teams I have heard of plus a few funny sounding names.
What I am basically saying is that any team that has never played against us in at least some very obscure friendly to my mind doesnt really exist. They are just a name, some obscure concept, I have no actual proof of their existence.
This may be an extreme view, but just as I have no evidence for the existence of God or life forms on other planets, I have a more certain knowledge that the likes of Odense, Rapid Vienna, Litex Lovech, Dunfermline and the Italian under 21 side exist more so than say Real Madrid.

It was just a tour game for Brann, and at the end of the season we went over there and played.
John Deehan scored 4 of the 11 Villa Park goals.

I don't remember. Deehan scoring four only sticks in the head because he'd been banging them in for the reserves and was given his first chance in the first team around the time of the Brann game, and made an instant impression.

Yes I do. I also believe in the existence of Bayern Munich,  Anderlecht, Dynamo Kiev, Dynamo Berlin, and Valur.

More impressively, I remember a year or so previously Villa beating Feyenoord 7-1 at Villa Park - like you fellas above, I can't remember a single scorer.

I think it was a few weeks before Feyenoord went on to win the UEFA Cup too, so I can only assume they had the same approach to the game that Ipswich did when we beat them 6-1 a week before the 1978 FA Cup final.

Hey Pat, i had forgotten all about that Feyenoord game untill you mentioned it and i was there. I also remember we played Eintracht Frankfurt in some sort of match to celebrate events at Fort Dunlop and gave them a good hiding and you know i cant remember much about that either. I remember beating Ipswich 6-1 in that game you mention and the one thing i vividly remember from that game was Andy Gray going for a 50-50 ball with the Ipswich keeper Laurie Sivell and kicking him in  the mouth. I was right behind the net  where it happened which was at the Holte End and can remember the horror of some of his teeth being knocked out.
