Aston Villa 4-4 Leicester City 1995 all the goals
« on: August 30, 2011, 06:26:32 PM »

Felt like a defeat this one but at about 60 mins in it felt like it was going to be a repeat of the previous home match, a 7-1 win. This game featured the last Villa goal ever scored by Dean Saunders. I remember Draper and Garry Parker bossing midfield second half - unfortunately both for Leicester. Some good goals though from both sides.

Is this the game where Tommy Johnson threw up in the centre circle?

I think that was Spurs. I nearly threw up when Leicester equalised though.

Draper was class in this game.

We signed him on the strength of this.

Leicester were our bogey side for ages.

I remember thinking where were all the defenders going to when they scored their last a minute or two from the end. It was almost like they decided to play offside but forgot to tell the ones on the line. I thought this was the Tommy Vomit one as well. I remember he missed the sitter but then scored the stunner and as mentioned by Deano, it looked like we were going on to win 7-1 again.

I decided to search for some more details and found this site. Now I always mistakenly thought O'Neill was in charge at Leicester for that match not Mcghee, but I definitely know Atkinson wasn't our manager.

Quote
1) ASTON VILLA vs LEICESTER CITY - 22nd February 1995
Remember this thriller at the Villa? Nope, neither did we. But after digging deep in the archives, we thought we'd restore the memory of this pulsating Midlands derby. It had all gone wrong for Villa - two years earlier they were battling with Manchester United for the league title but Ron Atkinson was now struggling to keep his ageing side in the top flight. Newly-promoted Leicester were themselves battling to maintain their Premier League status - Mark McGhee had recently been appointed after their dismal start to the campaign under Brian Little. After an hour at Villa Park, the home side were romping to victory thanks to strikes from Dean Saunders, Steve Staunton and Dwight Yorke. The Foxes bit back through Mark Robins but before they could digest, red-haired Tommy Johnson had restored Villa's three-goal cushion and victory looked assured. However, McGhee's side came storming back in the final 12 minutes through Iwan Roberts and a David Lowe brace - the equaliser arriving in stoppage time. Leicester failed to show similar character throughout the rest of the season and went down, 20 points adrift of Villa who finished just above the relegation zone.

We were looking at Europe with 15 minutes to go, on the back of a decent run, but this game sent us into the kind of tailspin you now come to expect of the Villa after following the useless bastards for more than 25 years.

I doubt it. Sir Brian would have known all about Draper's (sadly unfulfilled) potential having managed him as Leicester boss.

Those last two goals we conceded, was that zonal marking or no marking at all?  I'm still mad about the way we threw this game away.

Thanks for the reminder of this game (you git), still can't believe we threw it away. I remember walking away from the ground in disbelief.
