Penalty shootouts
« on: April 19, 2024, 06:34:50 AM »
Off the top of my head:

Winning

Lille
Tranmere
Inter
Albion
Bolton
Sunderland (LC)
Juve (Peace Cup)

Losing

Wimbledon
West Ham (subsequently chalked off)

Any others? We've got a pretty good record overall.

It's not a bad list is it? Still nothing near Liverpool who can put about half of their trophies down to shoot-out wins, the boring bastards.

League Cup 2nd round 79/80. We won the first leg away 2-0 and somehow managed to then lose the 2nd 2-0 at home. Think it was 9-8 on pens with their keeper missing.

Night of the Sunderland one, I got really drunk and watched the Youtube video from behind the goal about 20 times.

Mike Walker IIRC. And he didn’t just miss, he must have reached the third section of the Holte! It was the prototype for Waddle’s miss at Italia 90

Even the West Ham we lost (Southgate missed the fifth) was cancelled due to them putting on that player who was ineligible right at the end.

Combination of having mobile keepers who thrive on that occasion (Bozzy, James, Emi) and also still having a decent core of experienced takers on the pitch.

My first Villa game aged 7........magical seeing those AV floodlights from Holborn Hill for the first time.
Didn't get home till gone 11 on a school night as well (unless it was half term can't remember). Afterwards wanted to go and watch Villa every night!
Around that time my best mates dad kept trying to get me to follow the Blues.....i remember watching Blues vs Tampa Bay Rowdies in a friendly around that era. My two memories of that game, kicking a coke can around the bottom of their Kop with a nose and the half time entertainment which consisted of a supporter on the pitch trying to kick a ball into the open sunroof of a shit Austin Metro
.Get it in and you won the bloody thing.......
