Sad news. He was with us when my dad started taking me down the Villa and therefore he was a hero.

Played under Dick Taylor, Tommy Cummings, The Doc, and Vic Crowe.
So he spanned the period pre- and post-revolution.
That epic Cup replay with Southampton immediately springs to mind.
RIP.

Quote
The rolled-over waistband and the wooden thighs were about to reach the Villa man and McGrath’s wicked eyes were trained on the ball and Rudge’s legs. The Saint bore down on the Villa winger side-on and launched himself forwards, propelling boots, studs and tree-stump legs, like battering rams at a mediaeval door. At the point of impact however, Rudge, probably having sensed the attack, or death, nudged the ball on and sprang over the lunging McGrath’s committal, skipping clear. Gasps were audible as McGrath slid over the touchline like a Baseball batter struggling to make fourth base and the unsightly Saint crashed off the pitch and slid towards the surrounding wall in a sorry heap.

Thanks for your part in the Southampton game, one of the great nights in VP cup matches, RIP Dave.

A whole hearted player, popular with the fans during a difficult time for the club.  I was at the game at Preston in 1970 I think it was, when David broke his leg, he never really recovered from that injury.  (Small side note, my mum went to that game, one of only three she ever went to). RIP David Rudge.

Remember reading about him.

Was he not our player of the season once, but then got injured and never really hit the heights again with us?

Scored in the first game I saw Villa win, v Hull City in 1969!
RIP Dave Rudge.
