One of the worst things about social media is the number of times you see people write ‘of’ when they mean ‘have’.

😉
Some of us went to crappy comprehensive schools in the 70s. I would 'of' loved to go to a private or posh grammar school but my parents were brassic.  My English teacher would send us to the shop or play us his LP's in class rather than actually bother teaching us English. Happy times though.

I went to the same ‘crappy’ comprehensive as Gary Shaw.

But I rarely if ever mention it.

Six years to the day since Ron Saunders died.  What a fitting tribute yesterday was.

I taught English in "bog standard" comprehensive schools for thirty seven years and, like the colleagues I worked with, did my utmost to inspire students to be able to write well, discuss constructively and appreciate and enjoy literature.  The negative stereotyping of comprehensive schools winds me up almost as much as inaccurate grammar!

I was up in Birkenhead straight after Arsenal on Saturday for the weekend( fantastic gig at the Liverpool academy- Tom Hingley, Miles Hunt and Ian Prowse) and was reminded on SM of Sir Ron's sad anniversary and knew he'd grew up on the Wirral as his father was a dockyard worker/hand..Went for a windswept, rainy run along the floating quays and docks (The type 42 destroyer HMS Birmingham was laid down there) and thought a few glad tidings for his life and how much of a Saunders performance was replicated the day before and what he'd achieved for us...I was wondering where exactly he lived/was brought up, can't see anything online and there doesn't appear to be any memorial/blue plaque.
