The only sideways press I know of is a Thompson platen where the leading edge was fed down the platen when printed the sheet would be gripped on the different edge on the side then delivered sideways into the pile. So in answer to your question there is a sideways press

The only sideways press I ever knew was when the frontage of Grub Street housed the might of the Tory newspaper empires with the working class organs churning out their revolutionary spite in Bouverie Street.
