I was at that game v Burnley when Lionel Martin scored the goal mentioned by others: as I recall, a chip from the corner of the 18 yard box, and a night game.

Was it Burnley, I must admit I thought it was Blackpool . It was a night match I remember.

It was 1970 League Cup 2nd round Lionel came on for Willie Anderson 2-0. Brian Godfrey or Chico scored the other goal.

But Lionel's was marvellous scored at the Witton Lane End.

He chipped it from the edge of the area after receiving it with his back to goal.  He shimmied and dropped one of his shoulders, sending the defenders the wrong way then, turned and chipped it.  I was down the Witton End and saw the ball in the air heading for me, so I thought.  I had my hands up ready to catch the ball then suddenly I'm looking at it nestling in the bottom corner of the net.  As I've said, one of the best goals I've ever seen scored down the Villa in all my years of watching.

If I remember rightly Dave there was a momentary stunned silence from the Holte as though everyone was unsure of where the ball had ended up. I think a lot had assumed he had ballooned the ball over the bar, it seemed impossible that he had chipped it in with such height. It did, in any event, have a lasting affect on me as I can recall it now 45 years later.

That's it exactly MLF.  There was a seconds silence down the Witton too as, like I said to all intents and purposes, it was heading to Witton Island!

I think we need to speak to someone watching from the sides as, that goal would have looked all the more spectacular to them.

I was there, as 13 year old in the old Witton Lane stand, about 25 yards from the Witton End goal, not that far from where he scored - tremendous night - even so far away, the Holte was loud !  Am I right in thinking, Burnley went down from the old first division that season and Mick Docherty (Tommy's son) was playing right back for them ?

You're right CV, the Doc's lad spent most of the game kicking Chico Hamilton.

For the second goal, I was watching on the Holte and thinking, "Why has he crossed the ball when there's no-one in the middle?" Next second, the ball nestled in the corner of the net!

What a goal!!
