Would things be different if....?

For months, we have been moaning about the style of play. We started the season scraping some wins and picking up a result here and there with shite possession stats but we weren't in immediate danger. PL then seems to bow to fans' pressure and suddenly changed our style over night to one of possession. Although those stats have improved it has also coincided with the drought. Today would have been ideal for us to make things difficult and play our accustomed counter attacking style but instead we were ripped to shreds trying to keep the ball against a team that do it much, much better. So simple question is, if we had continued the season playing as we started, would we have picked up more points than we have?

PS - this isn't about Lambert being sacked, there's plenty of threads about that and we know the consensus.

But did the previous style, although tedious, keep us safe? Ok it was crap but we scraped enough points to keep heads above water. By changing, are we about to become a Wigan by having possession but ultimately not having the group of players good enough to implement it well enough to survive?

Yes, it is all or nothing with Lambert. A decent manager would be able to adapt tactics for specific opponents and change things during a match, these skills seem beyond or manager.

I have no idea what his tactics have been in both periods.
Neither seemed to have the target of winning matches which is odd.

I would also add that if Lambert is hoping Benteke's goals will save him this season he is truly screwed. He has become Samson after losing his locks, the strength has all gone and defences know how to play him. We also don't play the ball to his chest when his back is to goal which he used to feed off.
