Goal of the Season 92-93
« on: October 12, 2014, 05:05:07 PM »

Those of an older generation love watching the league winning sides of course. I always find it a slightly odd experience. The style of football is a bit alien to me, and the players I've heard so much about don't tend to quite live up to my expectations.

For me, it's all about the early nineties. Getting about half the entries in the BBC goal of the season competition (and this misses out belters from Parker, Saunders and Atkinson). Lovely jubbly. Dalian's goal was great, but I love Yorke's v Wednesday. That's what that villa side was all about. The only time in my life that Villa have been the most entertaining side in the league (or at least right up there).

88-98 was a ten year spell I look back on with incredible fondness. The MON years were great too. The last three seasons have just been dreadful.

Its always the period of your youth that corresponds to your favourite Villa period, because it was a time when there wasn't many more important things in your life unlike now with mortgage, marriage and murder etc. to occupy your thoughts. I do pity those lions under 20 who have largely experienced mediocrity.

Did Atkinson's goal against Wimbledon win Goal of the Season.

I remember being at the Ipswich game. Deano's goal that day wasn't too bad either.

Yes it did. How Deano's goal didn't make that final list of goals i'll never know but it was nominated for goal of the month - Yorke's header from the same game was the one that beat it.

We really should have won the league that season. i remember coming home from the City ground after Lord McGrath won us the game convinced we had done it. Oh Ron, why did you break up the Yorke Saunders partnership ?

I think you answered your own question there! It wasn't the best goal in that game so it couldn't have been in a list of goals of the month

It was the Coventry game and then the collapse at blackburn that did it. And fucking Steve Bruce

It wouldn't have changed our position medium term
But we'll never come that close again. I remember thinking at the time that at least we'd win it one day. I didn't realise how much football was changing

Always loved that goal Joachim scored for Leicester, it's majestic, it's forgotten that he was extremely hot property when he first broke into their team.
