Hall of Fame
« on: May 17, 2013, 01:58:50 PM »
I read last week with Stan's sad retirement that he had quite rightly been added to the Villa Hall of Fame. To be honest, I'd forgotten we had an official Hall of Fame as there had been no inductions since 2006.

I think the club have got it right with making it a very select group but it would be nice to see perhaps one or two inductees every so often.

Looking at the list of inductees, I was wondering if people thought there was anyone missing who should be a candidate for inclusion in the coming years?

As well as our Stan, those inducted in 2006 were Sid Cowans, Eric Houghton, Brian Little, Dennis Mortimer, Ron Saunders, Peter Withe, Paul McGrath, Peter McParland, Charlie Aitken, William McGregor, George Ramsay & Billy Walker.

Gary Shaw and Tony Morley or just Championship and European cup winners as a whole.

I was thinking the other day that even though a club museum is unlikely due to cost, making the hall of fame a part of the stadium tour would be pretty cool. Nothing too fancy, maybe just a set of pictures of the inductees.
More wall of fame if you like.

I think one day Gabby will be in there.

Bleeds the club, does loads of community work, top Premier League goal scorer, England international, always tries his best, won plenty of derbies.

Graham Taylor - for bringing us back from the abyss of Division2 - & any manager who has McGrath, Yorke & Platt in the signings column will do for me.

Johnny Dixon should be there - and John Devey from our early days.

John Devey is a very good call; I was at a social event in Shrewsbury with his great grandson yesterday evening.

Archie Hunter should be in there. First cup-winning captain. Massive influence in taking us from regional force to national superpower.

Howard Spencer and Charlie Athersmith should be in there as well.

Vic Crowe. A great player for the club and the Manager who led us back from the Third Division.

I agree with Athersmith.

But I also think a certain four gentleman should always be in any Hall of Fame that we have. I also think that any statues should be of Jack Hughes, Frederick Matthews, Walter Price, and William Scattergood. I think its a crying shame that they aren't celebrated and remembered more. After all it was they who gave us all this.

I'll let them off the pain bit...
