Turns out that they weren't the best.  We were

Exactly!

By the only measurement available at the time, we were the best team in Europe

I wish we were discussing a Villa Champion's League match thread tonight because that is where a great club like our's belongs.

Aston Villa have never played in the Champions League.

Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers have all played in the Champions League.

 :(
Don't you think that the Champions league is just a watered down version of the European Cup though?

by that logic liverpool have never won the premier league so there 18 times are all written off as well as 2 or 3 european cups and so are 1 of man u's

its the same comp with a new name and easier format, how can you justify loosing 4 games on the way and still winning the comp.
the champions league is the footballing equivalent of ann robinsons face lift, looks shit but some how it keeps pulling in millions
