5% Villa - Burridge autobiography
« on: April 03, 2011, 05:54:22 PM »

Would be in my XI of Villa "characters" - along with the likes of Withe, Hockey, Morgan and more latterly Tommy Johnson.

Very interesting article.

Quote
He adored the adoration that flowed for his never-been-seen-before somersaults. He sat on the crossbar in one game. He wore a Superman outfit under his kit playing for Wolves. He avoided signing for Derby County in 1984 by climbing out of manager Arthur Cox's office window. He was then chased down the road by Cox carrying a teapot.

A teapot ??

Didnt he play at Villa Park for Man City in 1995? The "hand of Ugo" game when we were battling relegation?

Love the bit when he's discussing players and managers he's had fights with

Stokoe was a character. I wasn't frightened of him. It's not like Ron Saunders at Villa, I was frightened of him.

There's be stiff competition for the goalkeeper's jersey in the Villa "characters" XI - Cumbes, Burridge, Sealey

Burridge and Sealey were both mad as a sack of badgers, i'm not sure of Cumbes and I guess you could throw Kiraly in there too with a little David James on the side!

Didn't know he had a book out, I will have to get it. Surprised he said he was scared of Ron Saunders. I'd heard that Saunders was scared of flying and Budgie used to blow up and burst crisp packets behind his plane seat!

I've read the book and it's well worth a read. However, there are a couple of items Villa related which are simply wrong.

States on inside cover that he was part of the Super Cup team that beat Barcelona, now based on the fact that we won it in 1983 and Budgie was sold in 1978 that's a long shot in my eyes.

He also recalls the "Hand of Ugo" game but somehow remembers Paul Walsh scoring the winner in a 2-1 City win that kept them up.

Sorry Budgie, it was 1-1 and Paul Walsh never scored.

Anyone else remember being at VP for a game where Budgie warmed up before the game then it was announced that the reserve keeper was in nets ? The word on the street was that Budgie was seeing more of another player's wife than that player was and he had given Budgie a broken nose in the dressing room when he confronted him when they came back in from warming up. Or am I delusional ?

Other player's wife - no
Budgie's nose broken - no
