Middlesbrough 0-2 Villa 1996

Both goals from a classic, controlled away performance. Everyone raved about Wright's goal but for me i appreciated Johnson's far more at the time and still do.

As I was a little young for 80-81 this was the best season for me. Some great football, upsets me to see how things have gone. I'm not blaming the board for this btw just the way football has gone in general although I'm sure we spent quite heavily that pre-season.

I remember it well - for not being there!   I was skiing in the French Alps, but remember seeing the goals on Sky Sports in a bar that night.

No, Wrighty got the first one with a blistering volley from the edge of the box.  That second goal was miles better than it looks on that clip.  If I remember it correctly, we must have kept the ball for about fifty passes before that clip starts, pinging it about and stretching the play.  The Boro players were chasing shadows.  Then the killer through-ball and that fantastic first touch from Super Tommy to pull it down and lash it in.  I remember watching it live on the box, it was a brilliant team goal, and one which summed up the quality of that side.  Sadly I don't think I've seen a Villa team pass the ball that well since.

My favourite ever season. What a time to follow the Villa this was.

This particular game cheered me up no end after I'd been the only one of my mates to get ID'd on New Year's Eve and ended up enduring dozens of tales from the 'greatest night ever experienced' on the arduous drive to Boro. Funnily enough, the drive back featured far more talk of the performance and goals than stories from a bunch of sixteen year olds who had spent the previous night trying to get off with 'ladies' in their forties whilst trying not to spew all over their pinstripe trousers and Kickers.

Ah, the 1990's.

Quite what possessed me to go there on New Years Day I will never know. Great performance though. I also remember watching the Darts final in the ground.
