Villa Park in 1917

An extract from the 1917 1:2500 Ordnance Survey. West is at the top.

Just the one grandstand along Witton Lane; shale embankments where the present North and Holte End stands are; a cycling track around the football pitch; Aston Territorial Barracks and Drill Ground where the present car park and shop are.

If memory serves, I believe the cycle track was also used for athletics. I'm fairly sure my mother telling me she took part in athletics at Villa Park around the time the map was published.

That's why the Witton was originally called the Barracks End.
