A quite big season of athletics ahead. So thought a new Athletics thread was justified.
Just dipped into tonight's Diamond League (Florence). Specifically to watch Asher-Smith (W100m) and Laura Muir (W1500m).
Asher-Smith pulled out just before the start. Not for the first time. An affliction she seems to have in common with her fellow school alumni, Emma Raducanu.
Muir was a distant second.
The winner did smash the World Record however.

Great story

To a degree I can liken it a bit to myself.
I was a very quick rugby player and did athletics for the fire service, PB of 10.4.
I was asked a few times to try out for an athletics club, but never followed it up.
Not saying I’d have pulled those times out, though

This is well worth a watch..

Flippin heck, he must have been touching 90-100m adrift at the start of the final lap.

Wow, that's amazing. He ran it like a 400m race.

Some big stories in the athletics in the last week or so.
Mens 400m hurdles - Warholm looks like he's gone up a level, I reckon he'll get the world record this summer.
Mens 100m - Christie's record has gone after 30 years, Zarnell Hughes currently with the best time in the world this year at 9.83
Then there's this from the europeans in Poland - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/athletics/66010470 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/athletics/66010470) - I love everything about that, credit to her for doing it, for being clearly pleased to be there, for all the photographers and comms not being twats about her and for the fantastic touch of putting it as a seasons best on the overlay. I love it when you get things like this in sport.

That’s brilliant, mate

Faith Kipyegon just broke then World Record for the mile running it in 4.07:64 at the Monaco Diamond League meet.
Ciara Mageean finished 2nd and broke Sonia O'Sullivan's Irish record. Everyone in the race either broke a national record or ran a PB.

Mondo Duplantis was uncharacteristically out of form in the pole vault tonight.

It hadn't occurred to me how much they look alike but now you mention it...

Incredible race. Despite, as Cram said -"the others have finished a mile behind", the first 8 (including Muir and Courtney-Bryant) now populate the 18 fastest times of all time.
Kipyegon obliterated the World record by 5 secs. And when she crossed the line she looked as if could have continued and done it again. This is on top of smashing the 1500m and 3000m World records in the last few weeks.

KJT takes the gold in the worlds, fabulous performance from her, brilliant 800m run from her.
-
A good bronze for Hughes after the gold earlier.
Just giving them their medal trackside immediately after the race seems a but rubbish though.

I was surprised by this considering it's the 2nd most notable medal they could achieve in the sport. I wonder if the athletes really care, though? Genuinely intrigued if they're bothered or not by the ceremony.

Yeah delighted for her, especially after the injuries she's had. She's 30 now, so Paris will maybe the last chance she will have of getting an Olympic gold.
-
I was very impressed with KJT yesterday. We have been spoilt with the quality of our heptathletes over the last 30 years

I guess it might depend where it is. If a home country athlete wins ( which may be quite rare ) I imagine a medal ceremony in front of home fans is amazing. But you might be right, in Budapest and a half empty stadium ( as they're often at early times ) then maybe not

Winner of the Womens 100m Final comes from lane 9, which doesn't happen too often, American Carri Richardson. Dina Asher Smith finished well down the field.

I was very happy for her, what a result!
Hope the Olympics will be a similar outcome. Fantastically well done, Katarina!

They give them out at the track but also have a medal ceremony later at what Steve Cram described an impressive facility. Not sure what that entails compared to having the ceremony in the stadium. If I'd won a medal I'd definitely want to see the tricolour raised and hear my national anthem.

If the UK had a better national anthem I would be more inclined to agree with you but it's wank so I'm not as fussed. Didn't know that about the ceremony.

I really like Land of Hope and Glory in the CG
-
Laura Muir a disappointing 6th in the 1500m final, Katie Snowden 8th.
-
Wow what a win in the 1500m!! Id not heard of him before either !
-
Josh Kerr. Gold.
Where did that come from!
-
Turned over after the match and it's been hugely entertaining
-
The pole vault was great. And a really nice moment to share the title

I’m really enjoying the BBC coverage of the World Championships in Budapest. Highlights today so far are the interview with Seb Coe about the future of world competitive athletics, Josh Kerr and Matthew Hudson-Smith's medal ceremonies and the Jeanette Kwakye interview with Keely Hodgkinson.
I’ve been off the sofa cheering this week, during several heats, semifinals and of course the finals, as well!
Well done, Budapest.
Any chance of Birmingham hosting this? I reckon after the hugely successful Commonwealth Games it would be the next step for the national athletics centre for the UK!
-
Keely wins her semi, very comfortably, looking good for Sunday.
-
Lovely bit of weaving from Reekie to win her semi too
-
I'm enjoying these championships very much, I like that the events come thick and fast, and everything about the venue looks great. In terms of the athletics, I much prefer the world championships to the Olympics.

The olympics is clearly a bigger event but, as with many of the sports, the more focused nature of the worlds does give it a different feel.
I haven't watched as much of the worlds as I'd like but it has been excellent when I've had chance to catch it.

Yeah, I've really been enjoying them for much the same reasons. Agree the the stadium looks great, and it probably helps that they're only an hour ahead so perfect for early evening viewing.
The women's 200m final was another good race with Jackson blowing away the field. Probably about to be replicated by Lyles in the men's.
-
Gutted for Hughes, just didn't quite have the extra gear in the last 50, still nice to have a genuine world-class sprinter for the UK again and hopefully he can push on again ahead of Paris next year.
-
Wow, Jackson has completely dominated the 200, what a race!

He wasn’t that far off the finishers, so that should be possible, we hope!

I’m really enjoying the BBC coverage of the World Championships in Budapest.
Have had to be careful (for betting purposes) of them showing races delayed when said races have coincided with their many channel changes. Actually may have made 100 quid because of that yesterday as there was some sitting duck money on Betfair at the end of the men's 800 semi they showed delayed and I had remembered to switch to Eurosport.
-
Well done, charlatan, someone must have gone to sleep, there!
-
7.45 Women's 800m, come on Keely, her main rivals for the gold are probably gonna be Athing Mu of the USA and Mary Moraa of Kenya, also good luck to Jemma Reekie.
-
The race of the Championships as far as I am concerned. A bit concerned the incessant very hot weather throughout the week may have taken it out of the Brits a bit. Also impressed with the way Mu recovered from a stumble in the semis.
But my prediction.
1) Keely Hodgkinson.
2) Mary Moraa
3) Athing Mu
4) Jemma Reekie
About 1.55
-
Gutted for Keely, but a silver is still a great achievement, here's hoping she goes one better next year.

Yes, it was great to see the Dutch win it, and Bol seems a very likeable athlete so pleased for her.

One of the best comebacks I’ve ever seen. Femke is a real tough athlete

British Olympic athlete was supplied with banned drugs by US therapist. https://www.bbc.com/sport/athletics/67733746
I wonder if it's the little fella who made the famous slacks.
-
He failed to make the Olympics that year. Don't think the description fits, although technically there is no UK team...
-
World indoors Glasgow.
Brilliant night. Almost another Super Saturday.
Gold for Josh Kerr - 3000m
Gold for Molly Caudery - Pole Vault. The new Golden girl of British Athletics.

Caudery is going to be very special, her technique is exceptional and I reckon she'll break 5m in the next 18months.
