Title: Chelsea v Aston Villa Pre Match
Post by: olaftab on March 27, 2023, 11:45:39 AM
When: Saturday 1 April Kick off 5.30PM and live on Sky Sports
Venue: Stamford Bridge, London.

It's not often that we enter an international break full of hope. We did that this time and we need to carry on where we left off. I don't want this match to be just a mid table mediocrity derby so a win would be very nice. I think we will at least take a point from this match.

Depends how many we have available. I guess a squad of 18 whilst they have a squad of 48.

1-2 Konsa, Buendia

Wouldn't be surprised if it's a dull 0-0 which wouldn't be a bad result.

Well what a wonderful feeling, going into a game at Stamford Bridge on a level footing with our opponents, however temporary (and hopefully not at all). They could still "wipe the floor" with us but you can bet the Manager is neither expecting or accepting it and that makes all the difference. I'm thoroughly looking forward to this.

2-2

No chance against those cheats.

2 or 3 nil to them.

I think we've got every chance to be honest. They're no better than us as their league position shows, and even though they've got a massive squad, some of their better players like Sterling and James are out. We're defending really well at the moment, so if Mings doesn't repeat his brain fart from last time we played them, I can see us doing well. The players should be massively motivated for this, as win and we go three points clear of them, as well as putting a dent in the goal difference. We'll also put ourselves right in amongst Fulham, Brentford and Brighton.

Hopefully the pre match motivation won't include Unai telling everyone they should be wiping the floor with us.

In recent times we've called it the JT derby.
I'm looking forward to the experience and can't wait to see the show.
I'll be liaising and deployed with some of the Chelsea fraternity, so I won't be able to wear my Villa jersey and will have to dress smartly.
This should be an exciting contest.
I predict a 2-1 victory with Watkins scoring a brace. But I'm more concerned with the performance and having a good time as it's a nice to enjoy watching a football match live in the right circumstances for me.

Even with Mings brain fart and even with Stevie Me in charge - we should of battered these at VP this season

We created chance after chance with Kepa pulling off a couple of worldies

So now with an actual coach in charge and with our new confidence i see a pretty decent game here and nothing to be overly worried about as even though they have had a few wins at last i still think they are quite fragile

I hope we go at them

We're winning this.

CL qualification via the league is gone for Chelsea and they're not gonna want EL or Conference League so they won't be arsed about the league now.

We will win this and my Europe thread will be very active. 2 or 3-1. Everyone will then be full of belief that we will make Europe this season.

Cash isn't a huge loss. Can't Coutinho get off his injured arse and cover for Goodday? Olsen would be a nightmare, maybe Jed can finally get the chance that those heroics at the Hawthorns deserved.

If the two Emis aren’t back that would be an issue and put a different spin on my optimism

Surely they will be back in time to play.  As it’s not just Villa it would effect - missing Argentinian players could effect some of our betters and there’s no way that would be allowed

If they are away - I think we just give the gloves  to mings so he can play as normal but use his hands if needed

I can’t see Unai doing that considering Olsen will have a very long tiring flight from Stockholm and will be jet lagged due to massive time difference. No, I think he will stick to Emi as he will be fresh as a daisy after that take off and land little breezer from Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires is only a four hour time difference so no excuses. They're only playing Curaçao anyway so they should field the reserve keeper and let Dibu head back to B6 asap.

Realistically we are probably looking at

----------Martinez
Young, Konsa, Mings, Moreno
-----------Luiz, Donk
McGinn, Buendia, Ramsey
-----------Watkins

Can't afford to carry Bailey from the start for this one. Also hope rumours of Konsa possibly shifting to right back are just rumours. He is atrocious when he plays there. Assuming Kamara and Coutinho are still out then our options are very limited. McGinn has a lot of football played in the past week so can't imagine he has 90 mins in him.

I think given how we've been setting up with Moreno in the team having Chambers or Konsa at right back might not be the worst decision. Whether it's been Young or Cash they've played noticeably deeper than Moreno and tucked in a fair bit so someone there as primarily a defensive player isn't a terrible idea.

I don't think he'll do it and I'd prefer to start with Young but if he does go that way I can understand the logic.

True but I don't see Buendia sticking as high and right as Bailey does. That 442 is somewhat fluid anyway with or without the ball. Buendia did drop in well, can't remember if it was Wolves or Leeds in the second half to make us a midfield three at times. I think he can do that again at Chelsea for us but has to avoid losing the ball in dangerous areas.

Leeds at home back in January probably? I think Ads might have said it a few posts back, but Chelsea haven’t beaten anyone higher than us this season. Probably wildly optimistic or delusional, but if we have all the players we expect to available, so the two Emi’s and Donk, with an Emery tactical masterclass, i can honestly see another Spurs away.

                             Martinez

Young.             Konsa.          Mings.    Moreno

                         Dendonker.   Luiz

Mcginn.                                              Ramsey
                                    Beundia

                                     Watkins

Kamara is possibly available if he comes through Friday. Hopefully now we can get 9 subs. Always have to factor the weird 2 keeper thing.

Im dreading this.

I absolutely despise Chelsea & everything they stand for.

I fucking hate losing to them almost as much as I do when Liverpool turn us over.

So obviously they are going to dick us 3-0...

The amount of people on here predicting a Villa win is a bit unsettling. I'm more used to us having gallows humour for a visit to somewhere like Stamford Bridge. So to give things a bit of balance I'm going for a low scoring draw. 0-0 or 1-1. So it will probably be 4-4.

Kamara and Donk available.

Kamara possibly more of a bench option.would be great to have them both available. No PL team should have Chambers as their first midfield option off the bench.

I fervently hope that the last games played without Kamara has shown beyond any shadow of a doubt that McGinn cannot play on the right! He ia a different person playing through the middle.  Emery will play Bailey and Buendia, with Luiz McGinn and Ramsey starting in the middle with Kamarra hopefully getting 20 minutes if needed.  Would also like a cameo from Carlos.

I disagree. The games before Kamara got injured, with McGinn on the right, were the games in which he rediscovered his mojo after being out of form for years in the middle.

Key is not to lose this.

Ideally we play this exactly like Spurs away which was a textbook Emery masterclass win against top 6 team.

Soak up pressure for first half but get in at 0-0, get an early second half goal and we pretty much eased to victory when it went to 2-0.

I do think Chelsea can hurt us a bit more as I worry about us picking Joao Felix up when he drops off the forward line. Hopefully Reece James is out as him and Chilwell either side is going to push our full backs well back.

That said with how we've played generally that should continue to match up well with how Potter plays. Our results v him for Swansea and Brighton in last five years were excellent and they were very lucky to win at VP when he was having a good start at Chelsea.

Would also help if we don't gift them a goal at a key point in the game when you think of the two Mings has presented for them in recent times. In the Boxing day fixture Cash also did a ridiculous challenge when he got wrong side and just lunged in to gift them a penalty.

Cool heads are needed when we're under pressure. If we can be o.k then I think we'll get a 1-1. If we follow that with wins v Leicester and Forest then we will be in the top half and table will look very interesting for last 8 games.

It is amazing how whoever we play is more worthy of comment than we are literally every week. I get it that being 11th out of 10, as it were, neither right in there for Europe nor in any relegation danger you'd say, isn't especially interesting.

Nevertheless we'd go above Chelsea if we win! Is this nothing? We'd be, what, 5th if you only counted points under Emery? You'd think we were ten points behind them.

It's not even that we're not worthy of comment above our opponents, it tends to be just one of their players that's considered more important. And Kai Havertz is wank, I'm sorry. "Ooh, he's so elegant", fuck off, he'a just a lanky Mezut Ozil

We're still very much under the radar as far as the national media is concerned. I had to drop my son off at school at 4.30am this morning as he's off to Italy on a school trip, and on the way back I had Talksport on. They were talking about the league table and how there's not really a traditional midtable as such, with the bottom half all in danger of relegation, and the top half all with an eye on various European places. One of the two presenters piped up with, "well, apart from Aston Villa in 11th." To be fair, his co-presenter did  put him right by stating we weren't far off 7th and if we beat Chelsea would be right up there, but the original comment just shows how lazy and uninformed a lot of journalists are.

If I can help it I don't listen to pundits, amongst all of them I can only think of Pat Nevin who has anything of value to say.

I prefer journalists who generally have to be factual, well written and balanced. Which is what drives me mad when we have the sort of lazy rubbish that I referenced. For balance, unless the circumstances are extreme such as title or cup win (when they often print from both view points anyway) that "10 things..." should be balanced in that if the preview features one side then the Monday review should feature the other but it rarely works out that way.

If you listen to the ads on Talk Sport, you genuinely start to understand why they're so successful - they absolutely know their listernership, their segment of the market.

All the ads are for things like taxi insurance, trade building supplies, van sales etc.

If you're targeting that demographic, TalkSport is absolutely the place to advertise.

I think so mate. Think we’ve only got Leicester and Forest to play who are below us; Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool away, Fulham, Brighton, Spurs at home. That’s just off the top of my head. Not frightening necessarily, but I imagine other teams have more of a spread that includes the bottom feeders, especially considering there’s nine clubs down there. That’s just current standings though, current form may be different I suppose.

When you think back to our early fixtures, what an easy start Gerrard wasted. Should have gone much earlier.

Best we can hope for is a 1-1 draw.

Records aren't set in stone though, and the main reason we always lose there is that they've nearly always been really good in that period, and we were mostly really bad. Now we're far more evenly matched in terms of form and ability in the team. We've got the better manager, and our away form Emery has been excellent.

It is worrying but i am really looking forward to this and am confident we will give them a game if not claim a victory

I still have nightmares about the Lamberk 8-0 game

I had to look it up but this was the team - OMFG

C Herd
6
C Clark (c)

Wow.  I’d forgotten just how abysmal that era was.  That team!!!!

A really shite team!
That was the 12 goals of Christmas wasn’t it, when we lost 0-4 at home to Wigan in the same few days?
I remember going to the pub to watch the Chelsea game, I still smoked at the time, I’m sure i went out for a fag at 2-0 and when I came back in one cigarette later it was 5-0 or something similar? Grim days.

Yep 8-0 Chelsea, 4-0 Spurs, 3-0 Wigan. Swiftly followed by the Bradford Semifinal disaster and Milwall in the FA Cup. Let’s call it a difficult couple of months.

I was at the 8-0 game, I walked out at 6-0 with about ten minutes to go and missed two goals and a missed penalty.

Not feeling good about today, think the only thing we'll come back with is some BS Footy ITKs from his unicorn Chelsea insider. I hate it when the press start talking us up, it's always followed by a defeat.

That's the first of his 5 needed chances before he will get a goal
