I expect a few changes but not many. But hopefully we get to see Cam get a start and maybe some sightings for one or two we’ve not seen this season.
I’ll go 3-0 Villa - Cam, Coutinho, Chambers
-
Be good to see Ludwig, Chambers, Archer, Tim all get an outing.
-
1-0 win
-
Christ, imagine if we lose.
-
Villa have played away to Bolton in cup games 4 times, we've won none of them.
https://www.11v11.com/teams/aston-villa/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Bolton%20Wanderers/
I've seen us lose a league cup semi at the Reebok and get knocked out the FA Cup at Burnden Park. I went to watch Sutton Town play there in the FA Cup in the '90s, they lost too.
-
After yesterday this suddenly seems insignificant. Only a few short weeks ago this competition would be one of our main aims but the dire state of our football makes winning it almost impossible to imagine.
But you never know. We'll win and the Manager will crow but the butcher is sharpening his knives.
1-2
-
2-1 to Bolton.
They'll be far too organised for our rabble.
-
Look, it’s on Steven Gerrard to get the most out of his players so we can be there or thereabouts. If we don’t, that’s on him but the players need to be better and if their not, we’ll find players that are. We can learn and improve.
-
He won’t, but I would go for a strong starting 11 just to try and get some cohesion.
Olsen
Digne
Mings
Chambers
Guilbert
Nakamba
Kamara
Coutinho
Buendia
Bailey
Watkins
Mix of regular 11 with a few squad players in there, also have Nakamba sitting with Kamara.
He will mix it up totally though, full 11 swapped and will play 4-3-3
-
Olsen
Defence Young, Chambers, Mings, Augustinsson
Midfield Iroegbunam, Luiz Buendia Sarr
Attack Archer Ings
Important match and chance to give game time to some but have enough about us to win as looking to go deep in competition.
No excuses whatever team is put out.
Bolton play in league one
Their priorities are promotion up to the championship this season.
Bolton have 2 red cards so far this season.
Lost on Saturday at home to Sheffield Wednesday 0-2 first defeat of season .
Played 5 league games W2 D2 L1
1 cup match.(Salford 5-1 Bolton had a sending off)
-
Play a strong team and try and win the competition. This won't happen. Hopefully our back ups will still be too good. Of course, the absurd attitude to cups nowadays spreads to the lower leagues as well so they may well be playing their reserves too.
-
Only our manager's second cup fixture and yet it seems like he's been at Villa for years! This seems like the kind of game where a giant killing could be on no matter our starting 11. I hope we make it into the next round and a win in the cup motivates us into winning our next 3 pl games, but I won't be surprised if we fall short again.
-
I'm hoping it's a good distraction from the mess which is our league form and we pick up a win.
Not so sure about Sunday though.
-
Expect to see Nakamba, Sanson, Chambers, Archer & Olsen come in.
Worrying fixture but I think we’ll have enough.
-

Don't forget Ashely Young . He will be captain.
Needs to make up for his missed penalty at Chelsea
And if it gets to that whatever happens don't let Nakamba near one.
-
Christ, imagine if we lose.
Impossible! We never lose to lower league opposition when our managers are under pressure.
-
Be interesting to see if Sarr gets a run out. Hopefully Archer picks up where he left off in the League Cup.
-
He’s made a big thing about having a good runs in the cup competitions so I expect a strong team lineup
Whatever that is at the moment
-
I think it will be similar to yesterday. Perhaps Olsen and Chambers to get a run out from the start.
-
I think it will be similar to yesterday. Perhaps Olsen and Chambers to get a run out from the start.
Don't forget club captain Ashley Young! He's here for such games and imagine if he gets to lift the trophy end of season would be fitting end to his career and full justification in him being here.
-
Has this sold out?
-
Our tickets have, don't think theirs will.
-
I managed to get a ticket as a member on Wednesday and there seemed a fair few left. Had a look yesterday out of curiosity and it wasn't on there at all, I imagine because they were postal tickets only and there wouldn't have been time to get them out.
-
Im going to this with my lad, although tickets havent arrived yet.
Think Olsen, Augisstinson, Irogeubunham, Archer will get a run out, otherwise id expect first team regulars to try and make amends.
2-0
Olsen
Cash
Chambers
Mings
Augusstinson
Luiz
Irogeubunham
Ramsey
Beundia
Archer
Bailey
-
I would pick the team that started yesterday and ask them to show what they really are about.
-
Wholesale changes please Steven. Leave this cup for Liverpool we need to concentrate on the League, finishing 17th.
-

Ha! You're more optimistic than me, fella. I'd snap your hand off for 17th.
-
I'd use this match to try largely his starting XI in a different set up.
If he is going to change his 'tactic' at some point, give it a run here.
-
I'd go:
Olsen
Young Chambers Feeney Digne
Kamara Iroegbunam
Bailey Buendia Coutinho
Archer
-
Good shout. Can't see it happening, though.
-
We're not playing til Sunday.
Gerrard should go strong.
Martinez
Cash Chambers Mings Augustinsson
Kamara
Luiz Ramsey
Buendia Ings Archer
-
I think I'd go....
Olsen
Cash
Konsa
Mings
Gusty
Kamara
Tim
Luiz
Buendia
Watkins
Archer
-
Is Sanson doesn't get a start here, he may as well hand in a transfer request, surely.
-
All those fresh and exciting line ups are missing one thing
JOHN MCGINN plays in every game
-
Young in his place as 'Club Captain'.
-
Young in his place as 'Club Captain'.
I would rather him than Meatball who is really starting to grind at the moment with him ineptitude
-
Olson
Young Chambers Mings Ludwig
Iroegbunam Kamara Luiz
Coutinho
Archer Ings
-
I'm actually going to this. My first non-Wembley away since the MacDonald Southampton shambles of late 2015. Blimey, now I see that written down, it surely can't be right!
Taking my son for his first away game, so he should see a cavalier Villa side put these to the sword. A sprinkling of youth and reserves supplementing enough first teamers that sees us scoring at least 4, and all shall be well in the Villa world for a few days at least.
On the downside, it seems the pub we used to go to there, at the bottom of the industrial estate as it reverts to countryside, is no more. Shame, that.
-
I'm at my first non Wembley away since the debacle at Fulham in early 2018, which was my son's first game full stop. Fortunately it didn't put him off and my daughter is doing her first away game tomorrow. And then the AFC Wimbledon next week in the Pepperoni Pizza Trophy.
-
Gerrard: "There won't be wholesale changes and there won't be, 'Oh it's the League Cup, let's make all kinds of changes'. We'll be strong.”
-
"There won't be wholesale changes...”
I was quite looking forward to a cup run as well.
-
"There won't be wholesale changes...”
I was quite looking forward to a cup run as well.
I really shouldn’t laugh at this.
-
Olsen
Young
Swede Augustinsson
Chambers
Mings
Nakamba
Luiz
Buendia
Coutinho
Archer
Watkins
-
Are Guilbert and Sanson still at the club? If so, play them.
-
He's got something against Sanson, I expect lardarse McGinn to start as usual.
-
We'll win 3-1 as we field a pretty strong side against 3rd division Bolton's reserves. SG post match will be akin to Steve Bruce's after we beat mighty Rotherham.

-
'fun fact'. We've played Bolton twice before in the LC, they knocked us out both times. 3rd round 2011 and the 2004 semis.
-
2-1 defeat. Hopefully Gerrard out soon.
-
2-1 defeat. Hopefully Gerrard out soon.
Don't talk rubbish. Get through and he'll be gone before the next round anyway
-
4-0 win for us.
-
Looking forward to a localish game after Bournemouth and Palace away. Should win and win comfortably.
-
Got a bad feeling about this
I'll never forget that semi-final defeat at Villa Park. We really messed it up in the away leg. Lose tonight and he needs to be sacked.
Hopefully we do get the win so the new manager can lead us to a cup final after Gerrard is sacked after not winning in the next three fixtures
0-2
-
We will win comfortably tonight 3-0
-
Taking my 10yr old tonight for his first ever away game and my first away game in over 10 years! Hoping for what should a big win!
-
Surely if we want to see development of our younger players this a game that a couple should get serious time on the pitch, otherwise whats the point.
-

Normally I'd totally agree with that but tbh the most urgent thing now is for the actual first team to get a low-pressure game together and try starting to produce rather than trying it in the next league game.
-
Dominate and do a professional job is what's needed. Anything less and serious questions need to be asked.
-
Totally agree. We need a strong team, play a proper 4-3-3 and just aim for a good, solid 4-0 win.
He needs to ditch this bollocks with full backs playing as wingers and midfielders as full backs nonsense.

After recent events and his quote, that's how I see it as well. May be a couple of changes but not many.
-
I also hope to see a double pivot. Whatever that is.
-
I also hope to see a double pivot. Whatever that is.
I think Ross, Chandler and Rachel did it with that sofa in Friends once….
-
I also hope to see a double pivot. Whatever that is.
I mentioned a double pivot down the pub the other day and it was like I'd said the password to a secret society of manhood. Suddenly all the geezers down the pub were giving me the nod, and discussing fit birds, power tools and grouting the bathroom.
-

Did they ask who you'd put your Acca on with?

Not yet, I think I'm only an apprentice at the moment.
-
I'd go with the midfield diamond as it worked better against Everton and our unusual shape at Bournemouth and Palace needs binning.
My team:
Olsen
Guilbert
Chambers
Mings
Ludwig
Big Tim
Sanson
Luiz
Emi
Ings
Archer
-
Liking that team Ads, gives certain players a go at last to see if they're better than the current preferences.
-
Me too. Should be easily enough to overcome a 3rd Div side. Mings back as Capt' too.
-
Also like Ads line up and I would even give Feeney a 15/20 minute run out, at the end.
-
He's got something against Sanson, I expect lardarse McGinn to start as usual.
I’ve got something against Sanson too, he isn’t good enough
-
I’ve been trying to figure out what this double pivot is and can only assume it’s the way Penandes goes down when someone gets within a yard of him.
-
Do people really not know what it is or am I walking through Barry/penalty territory?
-
The double pivot is a move Torville and Dean perfected and led to them getting that all those perfect sixes in the 1984 Winter Olympics.
-
He's got something against Sanson, I expect lardarse McGinn to start as usual.

You're judging on too small a sample size.

-
Double pivot is half backs rebranded.
-
I prefer it as it means we have enough midfielders in Kara and Luiz, who would be the first picks, to play it. You could bring a Ramsey or McGinn 8 style if you needed it to add more bodies to the middle too.
-
One of the main reasons it's on TV is because Sky are anticipating a cup upset, so let's not oblige.
However, even if some non-regulars 'take their chance' to impress, the chances are they still won't be starting on Sunday.
-
The last time I went up there (which may have been the last time we played them, I'm not sure) we stood in a middle of a Siberian like snowstorm. It was absolutley freezing and we lost. Great days.
Oh, 1-3 to us. Them to score first, we come back and win comfortably.

Like this team, but don’t think Guilbert will start, think he’s a busted flush at Villa, i think it’ll be Cash or if he wants to rest him Young, rightly or wrongly.
I like the idea of us playing the double pivot (now i know what it is) regularly. If he goes with it tonight, maybe Tim and Nakamba with Luiz further forwards, depends whose likely to leave first, Nakamba or Sanson.
-
At risk of sounding like Wilma, have we sold out our allocation for this?
-
Pretty sure we have.
-
Yes, last Thursday.
-
At risk of sounding like Wilma, have we sold out our allocation for this?
Yep, all 5268 (I think) of them.
-
He's got something against Sanson, I expect lardarse McGinn to start as usual.
I’ve got something against Sanson too, he isn’t good enough
You're judging on too small a sample size.
How much of a sample size would you give him??
-
A nervy 1-2 win which will do little to dispel the growing realisation that we have the wrong man in charge
-
Bolton 0 Villa 4 - Sarr x2, Ward-Prowse and Smith-Rowe the scorers.
-
I want all-out, no mercy, attack-attack-attack tonight. If we go out I shall be very unhappy and it will be a foul drive home.
-
Bolton 0 Villa 4 - Sarr x2, Ward-Prowse and Smith-Rowe the scorers.
No Benni McCarthy?
-
Yes, last Thursday.
Thursday? That's a DISGRACE.
-
Fond memories of playing at Bolton. It was where I met good egg Drummond.
-
Bollocks, I'm not going to make it, unless someone's got a teleporter I can have a go on?
-
I also hope to see a double pivot. Whatever that is.
Me too. With Ramsey in front as the ball carrier, and no McGinn for the night.
I'd also like to see a bit of width from the wide forwards.
-
Bollocks, I'm not going to make it, unless someone's got a teleporter I can have a go on?
I've got two so by all means you can borrow one, but I live in Bolton.
-
Pretty strong mine up.
-
Pretty strong mine up.
hoping we score a lot of coals tonight
-
Explosive!
-
Oh bollocks haha.
-
Pretty strong mine up.
We'll still need to dig deep
