Everybody's been screaming for Buendia to start so let's see what he can do. The ability to bring Coutinho and Ings on as circumstances dictate is pretty decent. Would rather see Iroegbunam on the bench than Marv though.

I have no complaints with this team selection. Ings will be disappointed after playing well and scoring last week, but as the man said in his interview yesterday, horses for courses.

Win please Villa

Does that mean Buendia on the right wing? I'm really glad (and impressed) he's starting but I hope he has license to go more central, that's where he's most dangerous I think.

Konsa selection worries me.

Big show of faith in him anyway, needs to reward the manager and show his best form.

Changes are welcome but I'm not sure about Bailey. Means another 433 and I'd prefer Buendia left centrally, not coming in off the wing. Great options on the bench.

I think Buendia will play more centrally, with Bailey playing a more forward position with Watkins. On paper at least, it's a very good forward three. The graft and pressing of Watkins, the speed of Bailey and the guile and trickery of Buendia.

Big chance for Bailey. I like that SG has changed the team, none of this once size fits all, we need to play the players that cam hurt the opposition on the day.

I hope it's not a return to lumping the ball into the box. Watkins needs a good game on his own up front. It's a brave decision by Gerrard. Everything crossed it pays off.

I thought it was a 4-3-3 but guess there's a flexibility in and out of possession. Buendía left forward Bailey right forward however it is there's goals here. Let's go Villa!
Confident of the win.

Not an ounce of leadership out there. Hoof and hope. Midfield is a big problem. Sanson and Luiz might be a better fit alongside Bouba.

It’s comical how invisible our midfield has been for ages. I think it starts with McGinn just having no presence at all. And he keeps retaining his place. And the fact we continue to whack it long meaning the ball continue to come back to our back four too easily and too often.

I'd say we need any tactics whatsoever. You could take the two managers off the touchline, put them in de-ageing machines and put them in midfield, won't make a blind bit of difference if they keep watching the thing sail high in the air to their left and right.

I have a feeling he'll put Young on early second half to try to wind up Zaha a bit. He's on a yellow so chip away and see if he reacts as him getting sent off is our best hope of a result here.

His system doesn't work, he won't change it so he'll go eventually. It's pretty obvious now.

I agree. It just feels inevitable.
Agree, we look like we ve done since long time, no changes. Like as with  this game I had liked to see him outsmart Vieira with some formation change or subs to win the gane. Cant see it at all, you dont get the sense.  positives: Buendia, still very frustrating: RB defending and delivering.

No matter how he changes the personnel, more often than not we look slow, create little, and lack a midfield. This is league game 30 for him, we should really be looking a bit better on a regular basis.

Not too sure what we expect, same players playing the same confusing system will lead to the same results.

Precisely. Like I said earlier, we've got the same front five from the team that got battered at home by spam last October, plus the 'keeper and half the back four.

Post by: pauliewalnuts on August 20, 2022, 04:02:22 PM
The thing is, the centre back problem is actually the least worrying one.

It's the dreadful style of 'play' that just does not work that he has to fix.
Title: Re: Crystal Palace v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: brontebilly on August 20, 2022, 04:02:30 PM
Totally over run in midfield. we've reverted back to giving it Mings whose only option is to hoof it.

Mings use of the ball has been surprisingly good. Could hear him giving out yards to his midfielders as none of them want the ball.

We are very fortunate to be level. But still look dangerous whenever we attack. Buendia really should have scored that chance before half time. Eze isn't defending at all, Cash is getting all the space he wants but Buendia chance aside has messed up nearly every cross.

I actually wonder if Nakamba could be an option to come in? Harsh maybe but I'd hook Bailey and switch to 4231. Nakamba or Luiz to come in. Our midfield three could all be taken off, game has passed Kamara by completely.

Away from home,  we have to go with a double pivot with Luiz in surely

He has to be on at HT.

Watch Gerrard put him on at 75th minute when we're 3-1 down.

Konsa has lost it totally, such a dip it's hard to understand.

I think his confidence has been systematically destroyed. Mings deserves serious credit for how he's been playing with everything going on in the background.

Yes he’s down well

Should be at least 3 1 to CP.

I have no idea how konsa who's been poor for a long time gets in front of the reliable chambers and still can't get my head around mcginn as captain about as useless as an igloo in the sahari .

And now the bloody Leicester game is on my stream

We're hardly pulling up any trees in attack either. Bailey and Watkins combined well for the goal but other than that they may as well not be there for all they've achieved since. Emi B is brilliant though he should have scored.

Bailey.Just can't see it.

 :o

Had a beautiful assist to get our goal, hit the crossbar out of nothing and is the only player we have that can take on a defender whether from a still or at pace.

He’s a winger in a narrow system. We can’t even figure out how to get him the ball.

We have way bigger problems than a winger that can actually play football and knows what direction the goal is.

I know this is the height of fickle and fuck me I love being wrong so let's hope so, but this isn't just poor - as far as Gerrard's concerned, it looks terminally poor. There's no way that with a pre-season under his belt they should look this bad, this disjointed, this uncoached, this incoherent. As Spurs have shown, you can't scrimp on the most important addition to your club - The manager.

If the owners want success, they can't shop in the bargain basement on 'promising young managers' or your jobsworth's on the manager merry-go-round.

Pot Gerrard now - Any spirit this squad had is being dismantled week by week.

A better man in the dugout would get this squad playing better. We cant keep recruiting up and coming, left field or plain out of depth managers. We need a full blooded top flight utter ruthless bastard who can get the team riled up to go out and win. Gerrard for Liverpool? He wishes judging by this. The media can blow smoke up his arse all they like, Gerrard is a step sideways from what we had.
