Back with Ings and Watkins and no Buendia or Bailey in the starting XI. FFS

I’m glad he’s stating Ings and Watkins.

Because there’s still a couple of weeks left in the transfer window when he realises they don’t work.

Obviously I type this in the hope they both get a hat trick and prove me wrong.

Glad to see Mings and Watkins back!
No Buendia again! Obviously doesn't  look sg in the eye often enough. Midfield looks weak to me.
Bailey will feel hard done by after his pre-season.
Watkins and Ings together ehh. I wonder how that'll work out?
Come on you Villa players, 3 points in the sunshine please!

Not impressed with that team selection tbh

We all know that Watkins and Ings is a poor partnership.

We lack pace without Bailey, who would be a problem to their defence.

Replacing Konsa is the right call though. I prefer Chambers, but Mings physicality will be needed here.

One of McGinn or Ramsey shpuld have been dropped for Sanson or Iroegbunham.

Hopefully it clicks and proves me wrong.

Weird bench too, a gazillion defenders on it. At least with Bailey, Buendia and Archer we have some options when it inevitably doesn't work.

Everton’s formation doesn’t look overly expensive, giving us the initiative to play on the front foot but have we got the guile to break them down?

So in the match predictor on the club website I had predicted Bailey to score our first goal of the game (and indeed our only goal of the game) after 17 minutes. Best go and see if I can now edit that prediction.

Update: no, I can't.

What sort of team selection is that? The standout performer Bailey, in pre-season is dropped after one game. How on earth is he going to get fully match sharp? Buendia should also be in the starting lineup. Not confident at all.

I think with that line up, they better win otherwise he will be under intense pressure two games in, maybe he wants off and wants to make sure there's a pay off? Anyway, really hope they click and a full house gets a performance it deserves. Phil C is obviously untouchable whereas Bailey can join the rest of the talent who get a small sniff and then bombed off

Given that Everton play 3 CBs, the two up front sort of makes sense here

I'm not a fan of Watkins/Ings as a pair but for the reason above it might not be a bad shout today against an Everton trio playing together for the first time. Ings won't last more than 55 mins anyway so always option to change it. Playing a genuine 10 is also a positive, though PC is ahead of EB on reputation only.

Not a fan of that midfield three but they can't be as bad again. Playing our strongest CB against these again is a logical decision. Maybe player/coach have had to swallow their pride during the week, if so that's a positive. Sanson not on the bench is nonsense but that aside it's a much better balanced team than last week.

Watkins AND Ings? Doing precisely what we've done eighteen times before is exactly the last thing they'll expect us to do this time!
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Everton Match Thread
Post by: Nelly on August 13, 2022, 12:07:45 PM
Not a great midfield, Ramsay and McGinn have been off colour for ages now. Coutinho can be invisible and WatkIngs don't play well together. Or haven't yet. I don't see why you wouldn't give Sanson a few games. And everyone knows why Buendia never gets a start.

Hard not to be a cynical about the lineup, but I still hope we win handsomely, as always.

I can only think that the starting 11 has been selected with the heat in mind, and that Coutinho and Ings will give way to Buendia and Bailey after 45 (or possibly even 25) minutes.

Richie Sutherland sure loves his Stevie Mee.

Quote

Gerrard v Lampard - who's the better manager?
Aston Villa v Everton (12:30 BST)

Richard Sutherland, The Villa Park Podcast

Supporters in pubs up and down the country have constantly debated who was the better player and now the debate rages on as to who is the better manager.

For me there is only one winner: Steven Gerrard.

He cut his teeth in management with the Liverpool academy before heading north of the border to Rangers, one of the highest pressure jobs in football. He not only stopped Celtic from winning 10 in a row by claiming the Scottish Premiership title, his team went unbeaten all season.

He steadied a ship at Villa that was only heading one way - down. This season will be hugely different and I truly believe that in Gerrard we have a manager with the potential to become one of the greats.

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard has been hugely unconvincing. Ultimately, he failed at Derby after being heavily backed. He was extremely lucky to get a huge opportunity at Chelsea which ended in failure following poor signings when their transfer embargo was lifted and now, after scraping to safety last season, sadly, for Lampard and Everton I predict a season of real difficulty, and I don't see him lasting beyond Christmas.

For Gerrard on the other hand, while the pressure will be on at Villa, I have full confidence that he will thrive under it.

Now that Doucoure has gone off, Iwobi, Davies, Gordon, Gray, McNeil has to be up there as one of the shittest midfield / attacks the Premier League has seen in a long time.

Playing patient football and trying pull Everton out of shape.  Bossed the first half although looked a bit ropey at defending corners, which is Everton's best hope at the minute.  Not a bad half for Villa.  No-one having a bad game really.

Enjoyed that, even without the goal it was a massive step up from last Saturday despite Everton adopting the same tactics as Bournemouth and playing 10 in defence.

Kamara is a joy to watch. Still not sure why we still insist in playing Coutinho, Ramsey and Digne in such a tiny space on the left. Hopefully we'll be Emi B and Bailey on 2nd half.

Encouraging stuff, esp Kamara.

But we still look a little laboured in the final third. Bailey on for the final 20/25 minutes could be fun as these start to wilt in the heat.

Everton are poor, they reek a fair bit of us when we dropped. We really should be putting this game to bed against this lot.

We're not much better. Disjointed with no fluidity, players not reading each others intentions when trying to play the ball forward.

I think it's more a case of shitting ourselves every time we're faced with a player in front of us. It's a very old habit we don't seem to be able to shake off. Safety first every bloody time.

Perhaps but we have a tendency to be a bit black and white in all this. I remember when Emi was starting last year at the beginning of the season loads of people were saying he was hopeless, overpriced etc. Coutinho is a bloody good player, as literally shown two league games ago. Emi is also good and sometimes there’s merit in coming into a game once the pattern is set.
