Back with Ings and Watkins and no Buendia or Bailey in the starting XI. FFS
-
Glad Mings is in, but not playing Bailey or Buendia is annoying.
-

-
Hmmmmm
-
Given that Everton play 3 CBs, the two up front sort of makes sense here
-
I’m glad he’s stating Ings and Watkins.
Because there’s still a couple of weeks left in the transfer window when he realises they don’t work.
Obviously I type this in the hope they both get a hat trick and prove me wrong.
-
But neither Ramsey nor McGinn would be in my starting XI atm.
-
Win please Villa.
-
That team has all the pace and artistic craft of a cluster of colour blind hedgehogs…..in a bag.
-
No Buendia. Ings and Watkins. No Bailey. MCGinn starts.
To think they get paid eye watering amounts of money to come up with that shite.
-
Gerrard determined to pile as much pressure on himself as possible with that line up. So frustrating.
-
Glad to see Mings and Watkins back!
No Buendia again! Obviously doesn't look sg in the eye often enough. Midfield looks weak to me.
Bailey will feel hard done by after his pre-season.
Watkins and Ings together ehh. I wonder how that'll work out?
Come on you Villa players, 3 points in the sunshine please!
-

In a strange way I am glad as it gives more chance of Cam getting brought on.
-
He has learnt nothing, Ings and Watkins and no Buendia.
-
Shocking team selection.
-
Is Sanson injured.
-
Why….just…why??
-
Ah.
Please don’t ruin my weekend Villa.
Too lightweight in midfield.
-
Obviously this is where they rip us apart - but blimey, that front four for Everton looks relegation-weak.
-
2 centre-halves, 2 left-backs on the bench.
-
Struggling to understand this line up…. Very harsh on Bailey…
-
2 centre-halves, 2 left-backs on the bench.
Steven Gareth Gerrard
-
2 centre-halves, 2 left-backs on the bench.
Nuts isn’t it.
-
Ah.
Please don’t ruin my weekend Villa.
Too lightweight in midfield.
On paper, their midfield is light enough to get blown away by a mild breeze. If we don’t dominate midfield today we never will.
-
I don't get it...Anyway please Villa win this..
-
I heard him referred to today as the Kopite Gobshite. I don't think he's universally popular.
-
Is Sanson injured.
Locked out of the training ground along with Nakamba, Traore et al presumably.
-
Hmmmmm
-
Not impressed with that team selection tbh
We all know that Watkins and Ings is a poor partnership.
We lack pace without Bailey, who would be a problem to their defence.
Replacing Konsa is the right call though. I prefer Chambers, but Mings physicality will be needed here.
One of McGinn or Ramsey shpuld have been dropped for Sanson or Iroegbunham.
Hopefully it clicks and proves me wrong.
-
Is this plan B?
-
Weird bench too, a gazillion defenders on it. At least with Bailey, Buendia and Archer we have some options when it inevitably doesn't work.
-
A boring lineup.
Please play your best players, Gerrard. Jesus Christ
-
Everton’s formation doesn’t look overly expensive, giving us the initiative to play on the front foot but have we got the guile to break them down?
-
So in the match predictor on the club website I had predicted Bailey to score our first goal of the game (and indeed our only goal of the game) after 17 minutes. Best go and see if I can now edit that prediction.
Update: no, I can't.
-
What sort of team selection is that? The standout performer Bailey, in pre-season is dropped after one game. How on earth is he going to get fully match sharp? Buendia should also be in the starting lineup. Not confident at all.
-
Cue “you don’t know what your doing”
-
I think with that line up, they better win otherwise he will be under intense pressure two games in, maybe he wants off and wants to make sure there's a pay off? Anyway, really hope they click and a full house gets a performance it deserves. Phil C is obviously untouchable whereas Bailey can join the rest of the talent who get a small sniff and then bombed off
-
Only half the bars open in the upper Trinity, queues are huge...and sweaty.
-
Very tough on Buendia and Bailey, looking forward to seeing Kamara.
-
So the solution as to whether to play Bailey and Buendia together is to play neither. Great.
-
Clueless starting 11. Starting to feel very roll the dice, Bruce-ball style. Prove me wrong Villa!
-
Given that Everton play 3 CBs, the two up front sort of makes sense here
I'm not a fan of Watkins/Ings as a pair but for the reason above it might not be a bad shout today against an Everton trio playing together for the first time. Ings won't last more than 55 mins anyway so always option to change it. Playing a genuine 10 is also a positive, though PC is ahead of EB on reputation only.
Not a fan of that midfield three but they can't be as bad again. Playing our strongest CB against these again is a logical decision. Maybe player/coach have had to swallow their pride during the week, if so that's a positive. Sanson not on the bench is nonsense but that aside it's a much better balanced team than last week.
-
That team has all the pace and artistic craft of a cluster of colour blind hedgehogs…..in a bag.
Watkins AND Ings? Doing precisely what we've done eighteen times before is exactly the last thing they'll expect us to do this time!
-
Not a great midfield, Ramsay and McGinn have been off colour for ages now. Coutinho can be invisible and WatkIngs don't play well together. Or haven't yet. I don't see why you wouldn't give Sanson a few games. And everyone knows why Buendia never gets a start.
Hard not to be a cynical about the lineup, but I still hope we win handsomely, as always.
-
This is his fall back, stick Watkins and Ings in and hope for the best.
-
I can only think that the starting 11 has been selected with the heat in mind, and that Coutinho and Ings will give way to Buendia and Bailey after 45 (or possibly even 25) minutes.
-
Just got up to the UT concourse. The big central drinks bit is closed. Got a first-timer with me today. Well fucking done, Villa. "Sorry kids, I'll get you a drink in about three hours. For know, just lick my sweat off me."
-

Class!!!
-
Still trying and failing to see any difference with the likes of Bruce.
-
Still trying and failing to see any difference with the likes of Bruce.
He’s getting paid more.
-
Forget Guess the Crowd or Guess the Goal, we need to have a 'Guess the Buendia song', the minute fans start singing the Buendia song in protest of him not being played. I'm going 22 minutes.
Prediction: 0-0
-
Ramsay why?
JM has been poor for ages. Hard on Bailey
-
VP is looking fab on BT sport.
Give us a wave!
-

I agree, neither if these sides are particularly full of goals.

Flinstone will be outraged. (probably rightly so in this weather, to be fair!)
Absolute joke.

Any small running water tips much appreciated :)

Richie Sutherland sure loves his Stevie Mee.
Gerrard v Lampard - who's the better manager?
Aston Villa v Everton (12:30 BST)
Richard Sutherland, The Villa Park Podcast
Supporters in pubs up and down the country have constantly debated who was the better player and now the debate rages on as to who is the better manager.
For me there is only one winner: Steven Gerrard.
He cut his teeth in management with the Liverpool academy before heading north of the border to Rangers, one of the highest pressure jobs in football. He not only stopped Celtic from winning 10 in a row by claiming the Scottish Premiership title, his team went unbeaten all season.
He steadied a ship at Villa that was only heading one way - down. This season will be hugely different and I truly believe that in Gerrard we have a manager with the potential to become one of the greats.
Meanwhile, Frank Lampard has been hugely unconvincing. Ultimately, he failed at Derby after being heavily backed. He was extremely lucky to get a huge opportunity at Chelsea which ended in failure following poor signings when their transfer embargo was lifted and now, after scraping to safety last season, sadly, for Lampard and Everton I predict a season of real difficulty, and I don't see him lasting beyond Christmas.
For Gerrard on the other hand, while the pressure will be on at Villa, I have full confidence that he will thrive under it.
-
Michael bloody Oliver
-
If anyone has a small river, would be appreciated.
-
Nice to see the players kids out there
-
A ridiculous time to play football.
-
Gerrard looks very anxious to me.
-
Carlos should probably have scored there. Lively start.
-
Very decent first corner that although I'm about 5 minutes behind.
-
Babbling brooks gratefully received.
-
Has Lampard just got back from a run to the tip?
-
Fwank is starting to look like Danny Dyer.
-
Ramsey looking lively.
-
We've missed Mings' pointing.

Watkins for once had a really nice touch there.

That blonde 6th former Gordon is a bit of a clogger

Micheal Oliver reffing. It won’t end well.

It's all gone a bit humpty dumpty down the middle.

Babbling brooks gratefully received.

Ta.

Apparently shirt pulling no longer constitutes a foul.
Oliver is such a twat.
-
Coutinho yet to touch the ball.
-
That attack on Digne, not a booking? FFS
-
Even with this crap line up we should beat these today.
-
Out cat was interested in the ball on TV for about a minute. She has now gone to sleep with her back to the telly
-
Play acting
-
What. A. ******.
-
Mcginn crap ball
-
Can anyone PM me a flowing water link please?
-
Philogene puts Cardiff 1 up v the opposition.
-
Mcginn gave it away twice
-
John McShitePass
-
Listening on the radio, has phil touched the ball yet? Not heard his name once
-
Can anyone PM me a flowing water link please?
And me pls!
-
Gerrard should have made Buendia captain.
-
Needs to bring on Coutinho.
-
Countinho makes tackle
-
This feels like last week. We don't seem to have any ideas how to break a team down.
-
More crap diagonal balls into the box. Sigh.
-
Ramsey loses baputs us in trouble

Carlos brilliant

Buendia having a good game

Offside

That’s going to get given.
-
Thank fook for that. First bit of pressure for them and they have the ball in the net.
-
Wasn’t Emi playing him inside?
-
That’s going to get given.
Maybe not. Thank fuck.
-
Wasn’t Emi playing him onside ?
-
Jesus. We look devoid of ideas.
-
We are shit.
-
No goal but we look a bit ropey at corners.
-
McGinn is woeful.
-
Is that the best celebration that Gordon could come up with? Twat
We are so so so so boring to watch.
-
Everton packing out defensively. I'd like to see the ball come into the box a bit quicker from Villa instead of trying to walk it in.
-
One of Mings,Carlos or Kamara has got to bring the ball forward instead of passing between them in our own half.
-
We've got a squad with Argentinian and Brazilian playmakers in it, yet we rely on our full backs to create our chances. Is it any wonder we huff and puff so much?
-
Yellow for that ffs
-
Ings and Watkins. The dream.
-
Well, at least Buendia will get a bit longer after Phil got a stupid card.
-
Need 11 Matty cashs
-
Ings and Watkins. The dream.
He should bring Watkins on.
-
J P-B has just put Cardiff 1-0 up against the 'Noses.

Ings and Watkins. The dream.
He should bring Watkins on.
Watkins studied Carlton Cole.
-
Who says he can't finish? Eat his goal.
-
Fantastic Ings goal.
-
Great goal.
-
Boom
-
Nice. McGinn, Watkins and Ings.
-
Lovely goal!
-
Yes Danny boy
-
YESS!
-
It's a Villa t'Ings
-
Great work from McGinn to get it started.
-
Get in!!
-
Ings and Watkins. The dream.
Wahey!
-
Gettt innn!!!!!
-
superb play from McGinn to win it back and launch the quick counter-attack.
-
Great move, first time ball from SJM opened them right up.
-
Ings and Watkins. The dream.
Wahey!
Bish bosh.
-
Cracking goal. Lovely quick ball by McGinn
-
Cracking pass by the skipper, great finish by Ings
-
So that’s what a goal feels like!
-
That's a cracking finish
-
Should be a different game now with them having to commit more players forward.
-
Credit to McGinn, good tackle then quickly gets us on the attack. Great link up play between Watkins and Ings.
-
Get the fuck in - and from a load players who get stick.
-
Fuck yeah, Ings assisted by Watkins, we're all idiots and I love it
-
Mantle with aplomb.
-
Fuck yeah, Ings assisted by Watkins, we're all idiots and I love it
And a ball won back by McGinn.
-
Fuck yeah, Ings assisted by Watkins, we're all idiots and I love it
Yep. I'm more than happy to be made to look like a gimp if we win.
-
That’s the sort of quality we need from all three of them on a regular basis. They need to make a material positive impact like that week in and week out.
-
I’d still sell Ings.
-
Kamara class
-
Get the fuck in - and from a load players who get stick.
Perfect.
-
Kamara looks excellent.
-
Kamara really does look quality.
-
Obviously this is where they rip us apart - but blimey, that front four for Everton looks relegation-weak.
Now that Doucoure has gone off, Iwobi, Davies, Gordon, Gray, McNeil has to be up there as one of the shittest midfield / attacks the Premier League has seen in a long time.
-
Lovely goal, Watkins/Ings combination wtf 😁
-
There you see what Gerrard sees. Kamara brilliant play to win the ball and then Mings passes to them
-
Cash has been excellent. Needs to look up more when delivering the final ball, but I love his enthusiasm.
And Tyrone, too. Solid as fuck.
Coutinho needs a goal.
-
Obviously this is where they rip us apart - but blimey, that front four for Everton looks relegation-weak.
Now that Doucoure has gone off, Iwobi, Davies, Gordon, Gray, McNeil has to be up there as one of the shittest midfield / attacks the Premier League has seen in a long time.
They do look awful.
-
All from mcginn losing it
Nervous time there
-

Very true but you’re doubling down on your jinxing there Dave!
-
Get a second Villa.
-
Does being the set piece coach involve working on defending bastard corners?
-
How close
Good footy there
-
We look very, very shaky in defence. VAR checking for a potential penalty.
-
We must score there.
-
We've been ok other than looking like we'll concede at every corner.
Everton look truly dreadful.
-
Our defending from corners is catastrophic
-

It's Villa, I'd be wouldn't be surprised to watch us capitulate against my seven-a-side team, and a 3-1 Everton from this situation wouldn't shock me.
They're still shit.
-
Good move.Reckon we could get three if we go for the jugular
-
Great goal.
We can’t defend crosses.
2nd half will be interesting.
-
Playing patient football and trying pull Everton out of shape. Bossed the first half although looked a bit ropey at defending corners, which is Everton's best hope at the minute. Not a bad half for Villa. No-one having a bad game really.
-
Largely pedestrian, still not moving the ball quick enough, but at least we scored. And it is hot, to be fair.
Fuck knows what's going on with our defending at set pieces, though.
-
We should be able to hit Everton on the break second half as they try to push for an equaliser, Bailey could repeat what he did last season against them.
-
This is poor stuff only made palatable by Everton being very poor.
-
We stand around way too much waiting for players to move into position. I don’t understand why our off ball movement is so static at times. It horrible to watch and easy to defend against.
-
Looking much better. Linesman on the Trinity Road side has been very late with his flag a few times and has been checking his earpiece.
-
Let's smote them in 2nd half.
Theee aren't many easier games than this. And we lost a comparable one last week
-
Enjoyed that, even without the goal it was a massive step up from last Saturday despite Everton adopting the same tactics as Bournemouth and playing 10 in defence.
Kamara is a joy to watch. Still not sure why we still insist in playing Coutinho, Ramsey and Digne in such a tiny space on the left. Hopefully we'll be Emi B and Bailey on 2nd half.
-
Encouraging stuff, esp Kamara.
But we still look a little laboured in the final third. Bailey on for the final 20/25 minutes could be fun as these start to wilt in the heat.
Gordon looks good for them.
-
Bailey and Archer to come on and give them some problems in the last 30 mins.
We could give them a good toss-spangling here.
-
Kamara's reading of the game is a pleasure to watch.
-
Kamara on a free transfer maybe looking like the best business we have done in decades. He oozes class.
-
Everton are awful. One of the poorest midfields we will come up against with no one upfront.
We need to move the balll much quicker. Too many sidewards and backward paassing.
Great goal.
-
Gordon looks good for them.
He's only 21 but whenever I've seen him play for the England kids he's looked class. Proper winger.
-
Gordon looks good for them.
He's only 21 but whenever I've seen him play for the England kids he's looked class. Proper winger.
Yep. He’s stood out as a decent player every time I’ve seen him.
-
Gordon isn't shit. He does for them what JJ does for us. Drives the ball forward with pace and technique into dangerous areas. Neither team has anyone else that can do the same.
-
Shocking Watkins
-
Has a little bit of needle to his game as well.
-
Watkins needed to do much better there
-
Score again Villa.
-
How is that a yellow card or even a foul?
-
How is that a yellow card or even a foul?
That's what I thought
-
Soft decision for that foul by Digne
-
How is that a yellow card or even a foul?
Think it was for the pull, not the tackle that followed it.
-
That's Watkins to a tee
-
Subs time.
Archer, Bailey and Buendia on.
-
What is it with us and defending set pieces!
-
Mattty cash class
-
Got to sort out our defending in our own box. It's comedic.
-
Watkins is basically Theo Walcott 2.0. If he has too much time to think, he usually fluffs it.
-
Save emi
-
Someone put something in their tea at half time?
-
Errr get a grip Villa.
-
Phil injury. Get emi on
-
Digne wins the ball cleanly - yellow card.
Davis sweeps Ollie's standing leg with the follow through - not even a free kick.
Absolute clown.
-
Phil injury. Get emi on
Forgot he was playing.
-
Gezza's mate is not up for it any more.
-
We're bringing our best player on.
-
Get Emi on
-
Here comes the real deal.
-
Digne wins the ball cleanly - yellow card.
Davis sweeps Ollie's standing leg with the follow through - not even a free kick.
Absolute clown.
Michael Oliver - Kevin Friend's friend?
-
I do find it weird how some people seem to almost be willing Coutinho to fail.
-
Here comes the real deal.
Should have been on from the start and not just because Phil gets injured.
-
Buendia on for Coutinho is as inevitable now as MON’s late sub bringing on Steve Sidwell
-
I do find it weird how some people seem to almost be willing Coutinho to fail.
If was name was anything else he'd have a lot more negative feedback, I think.
-
Emi B coming on should speed up our pace of play in attack.

Buendia on for Coutinho is as inevitable now as MON’s late sub bringing on Steve Sidwell
Hesket for Carew 67 mins

Carlos' lunch has just arrived.

-
I do find it weird how some people seem to almost be willing Coutinho to fail.
I think he'd benefit by having Bailey and Buendia alongside him, and be further up the field
-
I get that you have to take head injuries seriously but stopping the game on the edge of their box because coady made an intentional header and letting them kick the ball back to Martinez is fucking wank.
-
Pickford must be bored.
-
We could do with bringing on a Bailey for one of the forwards now.
-
Foul throw all day long there.
-
How we not score then
-
Ings seems to be enjoying himself today
-
I do find it weird how some people seem to almost be willing Coutinho to fail.
If was name was anything else he'd have a lot more negative feedback, I think.
Not a chance. Look at his output last season and I reckon it was better than any other attacker in our squad. Two games in and people are already saying he’s gone.
-
Everton are poor, they reek a fair bit of us when we dropped. We really should be putting this game to bed against this lot.
-
I get that you have to take head injuries seriously but stopping the game on the edge of their box because coady made an intentional header and letting them kick the ball back to Martinez is fucking wank.
Ridiculous decision but no surprise when you see who the ref is.

Yep need a second.

I might be wrong and happy to be shown differently but I seem to remember him coming in, having about three really outstanding games, linking well with Ramsay, and then not much more for the rest of the season.

We often play our games at a pace suggesting we lined up 38 friendlies.
-
Everton are poor, they reek a fair bit of us when we dropped. We really should be putting this game to bed against this lot.
We're not much better. Disjointed with no fluidity, players not reading each others intentions when trying to play the ball forward.
-
Is this Ings’ best game for us? Looks very lively.
-
Shot by Carlos.lethal
-
Ings seems to be enjoying himself today
Yep. Pace is not what it was but he is a footballer.
-
How we not got second
-
We often play our games at a pace suggesting we lined up 38 friendlies.
I think it's more a case of shitting ourselves every time we're faced with a player in front of us. It's a very old habit we don't seem to be able to shake off. Safety first every bloody time.
-
Can Steven really not see how much fucking better we are with Emi?
-
I fucking love Buendia. I don't know how we've not scored.
-
Get a fucking second Villa.
-
Getting a few shots in, what is this sorcery?
-
We need a 2nd. Bloody well should have one by now.
-
Handball Coady?
-
I do find it weird how some people seem to almost be willing Coutinho to fail.
I'm willing him to bring something to the team but he doesn't really, does he?
-
Is that Gareth Southgate on the bench - all SG needs is a waistcoat. Let's go win the game!
-
Bailey the man coming on
-
Here comes Bailey!
-
Bailey on for Ings
-
Infs was brilliant
-
Buendia just speeds up all our play when he comes on. He really is a cracking little player.
-
On comes Leon for Ings

I do find it weird how some people seem to almost be willing Coutinho to fail.
I'm willing him to bring something to the team but he doesn't really, does he?
Well he demonstrably has done in his time at the club - including being the best player, and scoring a cracking goal, in the last game of last season.
-
I do find it weird how some people seem to almost be willing Coutinho to fail.
I think it's more people think that Emi offers more. As shown already today.
-
Score again please Villa - a cracker like last season from Bailey would be good.
-
Dear Leon, please don’t get injured when you smash the ball into the net. Sincerely, Villa fans
-
To be fair JJ been good
-
Beeb
Buendia has certainly made a difference since coming on. He has been much more lively than Philippe Coutinho. He has a brilliant ability to find space with smart runs.
-
Ramsay's signature run. Well done.
-
It’s like we took the brakes off when Phil went off and Buendia on.

It's the price rise in zone 6.

Imagine we are one down and we bring on Dele Alli.
-
I do find it weird how some people seem to almost be willing Coutinho to fail.
I think it's more people think that Emi offers more. As shown already today.
Perhaps but we have a tendency to be a bit black and white in all this. I remember when Emi was starting last year at the beginning of the season loads of people were saying he was hopeless, overpriced etc. Coutinho is a bloody good player, as literally shown two league games ago. Emi is also good and sometimes there’s merit in coming into a game once the pattern is set.
-
When the commentator commets on how long it’s been since Dele Ali has scored ……:::
-
Thank fuck for Mings. He’s been rather good today
-
Imagine we are one down and we bring on Dele Alli.
Jinx much!
-
Imagine we are one down and we bring on Dele Alli.
Jinx much!
Luckily I don’t believe in them but I fully expect a proper stoning now if he scores
-
Come on Villa get a second.
-
So five subs allowed. A hot midday game and only 2 used. Doesn't the tablet suggest any pooh yessss
-
SCORRRRRRRRRRRCHIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Coutinhooooooo! I mean Buendiaaaaaaa

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS EMI

Good night Everton.

That’s better!

Ffs Everton goal
-
Fuckinghell Villa!

Genius!

Emiiiiiiii!
What a player.

Buendia has to start the next game.
-
Legend in the making
-
What class.
But he will only start next game if Phil stays injured.
-
Watkins, full credit, great ball across.

And now we do the typical Villa.

-
Digne been poor last ten minutes
-
That's what Mings does as good as anyone. What a challenge that is.

Best part of 75 mins of not overly exciting, followed by 20 mins of manic end to end football.

Digne been poor last ten minutes
I think he has been poor throughout.
-
Carlos off, Chambers on.
-
Why is every bastard minute taking about three? I’d live forever if Villa were in a permanent one goal lead.
-
Digne been poor last ten minutes
I think he has been poor throughout.
He had some good link up with Buendia earlier.
-
We lack composure.
-
Looking at the BBC commentary they seem desperate for an Everton equaliser
-
Why is every bastard minute taking about three? I’d live forever if Villa were in a permanent one goal lead.
