Ings over Watkins is a bit of a shocker. Almost as much as not seeing Ings and Watkins. Buendia after his knock vs Fulham on the bench isn't a massive surprise.

are you suggesting Coutinho shouldn't be starting the first game of the season?

Strong starting 11, but the quality on the bench really demonstrates how this squad is taking shape.

Let's hope all the leadership in our team hasn't been left on the bench.

Interesting selection. Strong bench. On paper this team should do Bournemouth but as Fulham are proving newly promoted teams put in a huge amount of effort in the opening match.

Disappointing that Archer is the only kid on the bench, I'd really rather see KKH in the squad than Ashley Young.

Why should he be dropped? He was arguably our best player against Man City. And he scored.

Agree. Maybe because Young can play more positions. Admittedly, none of then very well since about 2015.

I like that team. Mings will be off I think, followed by Doug and Watkins, I think the manager is making a statement today about moving on.
Hopefully if Ings isn't doing it Archer will come on.

No Ings + Watkins, that is a huge relief. No Nakamba/Sanson on the bench but both Augustinsson and Young included, I'm surprised by that. Buendia's lack of training gives Gerrard an excuse not to start him, but Ings ahead of Watkins is a big call.

The bench looks like quite a decent side too.

The absences are interesting. A few loan moves and maybe some permanent deals still to come and we're still supposed to be after 1 or 2 players too.

Gerrard hinted at Mings possibly not starting, he said something along the lines of wanting to see the player that got into the England team and that player can get a start in this XI is something like that.

I think as this season goes along we will see Young phased out out for KKH and some of the other younger players coming into the fold. With 5 subs there are more chances to bring players on and rotate the line up. Game 1, having a bit more experience isn’t the worst thing. Sanson is the concern as he did well in pre season and you’d think he’d be on the bench at minimum. Chambers though offers extra positional flexibility

I would also like to see the kids earn their place in the side rather than being given it. They need to impress when they get their opportunities.

Languidly passing the ball between ourselves in our own half, like we're Brazil 1970 in the build up to that Carlos Alberto goal, except rather than move forward, at some point we lump it in the vague direction of a 'channel' and lose possession.

Either the coaching or McGinn isn't good enough, but it's one of them. Every time he gets the ball he looks like a dog on a hot patio, all jumpy and ungainly, taking 20 touches before passing it sideways. Either the structure isn't there to give him options, or he's not good enough to execute it.

I know it’s not especially relevant to the football but although their ground does look like something non-league, I do love proper corner floodlights. That’s been all I can say I’ve enjoyed of the game so far.

Martinez has to play.  He is our best forward player and the only one who seems to be able to break extremely limited teams like this down.  Bailey seems to have turned back into last seasons vintage.

A depressing first half that looks a lot last the last 10 games from last season.

One of those halves where we looked like we've downed 10 pints down Boscombe the night before.

Average crosses and set pieces, poor shots. Going to need to switch it quickly rather than waiting until 75th minute otherwise we'll be 2 down and yet another awful opening day result to newly promoted team.

some of you seem more keen for Gerrard to fail than for villa to succeed.

I'm sure we'd all like nothing more than for Gerrard to succeed with us, but has there been any evidence of progress since he joined, besides some eyebrow-raising signings?

Being realistic, the ONLY area he's improved us is in his pulling power to attract new signings. Have we improved AT ALL on the pitch since he joined?

He talks the talk about players being picked on merit, then makes one of the worst performers last season our captain (*and so far this season on current evidence)! He benches Chambers, our most in form CB, and doesn't even put Sanson in the squad despite outshining McGinn in pretty much every match he's got a chance to step onto the pitch.

Being this shit, with the quality we have, against a shitty little club like Bournemouth with Scott Parker in charge, is nowhere near good enough for the outlay of our owners. With those two lineups, this should finish as a cricket score... but we're clueless.

I am all for Gerrard, he has plenty of time in the bank to show he can do it.

Slightly concerned by the degree to which he talks the talk without ever really walking the walk.

Not sure how one of the greatest midfielders of recent generations manages to have us look like we've decided to forego having any midfield at all week after week, mind.

Not going to over react - 45 mins in, Liverpool we’re losing after 45 too and it can happen again Neely promoted sides.

Need to say more pace 2nd half - I’d take Coutinho and Ings off and bring Buendia and Archer on

The fact that McGinn, Kamara and Ramsey are SO far apart most of the time MUST be deliberate, but I can't for the life of me understand why?  We're getting plenty of the ball, but no real quality possession in the final third and almost impossible to create against the bus they've (understandably) parked.

Second half will be like a training exercise, attack against defence, with them trying to nick one on the break.  The way it's going, we just don't look like scoring - not that the forwards have had any real chances yet.

Go 4231 in 2nd half.

Is the correct answer. It's not difficult to fit Coutinho, Buendia and Bailey in the same side. If one of them isn't performing you hook them for Traore (yep) or Ramsey, or a striker if you're chasing and getting desperate, or revert to this formation currently when protecting a lead against Bournemouth if you must. We seem to be dropping into a back three on the ball as well, which seems daft when they're 1-0 up and sitting deep. Carlos doesn't need Kamara there to find Konsa.

I really doubt we'll win this. We've created nothing and I don't think we'll make the changes needed to look more dangerous.

Bournemouth have been set up defensively from before the pre-match warm up. Parkthe bus, and played for a goal on the break.

Guess our plan was to get a goal, forcing them to come out and then we could get in behind them and romp away with the game.

Typically though, we shot ourselves in the foot within 3 minutes and we haven't got the nous to break them down.

There are so many absolute no-mark, pointless, generally Southern clubs where we have an atrocious record. Bournemouth, Cuntford, Palace, Millwall, Watford, Luton, Fulham. Absolutely pathetic.

We look like Manchester city but resemble Bez from Manchester

I wish, Bez has cleaned his act up.

Do we have a bad record against these? Didn't we do the double over them even in the relegation year?

If Archer is the real deal then he'll score a hat-trick and we win this.

Our play is so very pedestrian. Just a bunch of blokes standing around waiting for things to happen

Stream came back just in time to see the unmarked player get their second. Terrible performance but I'm not surprised against a newly promoted side away on the first day.

Can't wait to hear what Gerrard says about this omnishambles.

Does Gerrard seriously think playing at this pedestrian pace is going to be successful?

Tony Gale reckons Gerrard and McAllister won't stand for this. Funny that, because they've been standing for it for fucking months now, and nothing has changed.

New season, same old shit. How many times do we say this on the opening day? New players, new owners, new managers, lots of money spent over the last few years but nothing ever seems to change.

Awful

No cohesion, no idea when attacking, defence was poor. Got what we deserved

Never came close. A very worrying performance. Results like this happen, especially on the first day of season. But performances like this don’t unless there is something very wrong with the set up. In 100 minutes (including stoppage time in both halves) Kamara had a shot fractionally wide, otherwise we never ever came close to scoring. Ings not good enough, neither is Watkins. McGinn is a bottom third PL standard player and he’s our captain. Ramsey is simply overrated. And Coutinho played very poorly as if he didn’t care.
Gerrard has some serious question marks over him.

Carlos was a big disappointment Mings would have been better, no real shot on goal the whole game, Gerrard  got the team sheet wrong and I would have thought at half time he would have sent them out with a big bollocking but we were far worse. I am starting to think, even though it's the first game, that Gerrard may be out of his depth.
