Rennes v Aston Villa
Saturday 30 July 5pm
Be very interesting to see the starting line up. I'd like to see something like this:
Martinez
Cash Chambers Carlos Digne
Kamara Sanson
Bailey Buendia Coutinho
Watkins
I'd be happy if Archer started, but seeing as Watkins is still our first choice striker we need to get him into some sort of form.
No Watkins and Ings up front, I said no Watkins and Ings up front!
-
Interesting, that might be a good line-up. Sanson, Bailey, and Buendia all seem to play at a higher tempo and Buendia likes to play balls through the middle which would be good for Watkins.
-
I would go with that and hope to god that he has finally dropped the Watkins Ings idea.
-
Rennais! What are you doing holding that girl in your arms?
You stupid woman.....

I’m more disappointed someone couldn’t have titled the thread as a tribute to The Four Tops. Opportunity missed.

I just don't think he sees having both Coutinho and Buendia starting together in the same side.
I would much prefer if he went with the team Risso selected. However, I expect he will go with:
Martinez
Cash Carlos Mings Digne
McGinn Kamara Ramsey
Bailey Coutinho
Watkins

Stick all four Johnny Frenchmen on together at the start.

I love us to try this, but just don't see him leaving Ramsey or McGinn out. He wouldn't even drop them for Sanson last season when it was clear they were struggling. Luiz would also be a good fit for that spot.
Arguably it looks too attacking, but I think people underestimate just how combatitive Buendia can be and he could drop back to make a 3 in midfield when required.
-
I would think that the team that starts this game will be the team that starts against Bournemouth, (unless we make a top quality signing next week)
Mings will start the game, Watkins will also start the game.

Rennais walk away in shame after Archer 4 tops a great Villa win.

I did like that stupid policeman in Allo Allo. He was the best one in it.
Good Moaning. People who leave the motch early are all wonkers.

Hopefully we’ll be spared Levi Stubbs’ tears.

How on earth did it manage to go on for so long, it really was hideously bad.

I never liked her in Wurzel Gummidge.

Definitely start with Risso's selection and see how it goes. I would like to see how it works against a reasonable opposition.
I guess the other option would be 3 at the back [lights fuse, steps back]

Now see, your first sentence was great, and if you'd left it at that you'd have cemented your place as one of the up and coming members to look out for. But no, you had to go and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory didn't you?
;)

It was really corny but I really liked it. It had the same sort of am-dram production as Dad's Army and like Dad's Army the occasional comedy gold nugget thrown in. Vicki Michelle in her black stockings and stilettos might have something to do with my fond memories of the show.
-
I see SR have a player with the surname Tait. I'm starting to feel ill-disposed toward them.
-
Should be a good test, they finished fourth last season.
Can’t say I know too many of their players though? Guirassy up front, the defender Traore and then Steve Mandanda plays their now but can’t see any well known players.
-
Rennes have just sold a 17 year old striker to Bayern Munich for best part of £30m because they needed the cash. He's thought of as one of the best prospects around.

Martinez

Bouba
Sanson McGinn
Buendia Coutinho
Watkins
This for me.

I think its okay to show our hand and put on a performance with SG's preferred starting line up

Watkins

I think he'll almost certainly start with Bailey.

Has Bailey ever had a start within our strongest XI? Really looking forward to seeing if he can carry on the form from the United game.
I think his pace and the runs he makes inside the fullback off the right will give Countinho/Buendia the option they need to split defences with their passing.

I think we had a behind closed doors game with Fulham yesterday. I guess they either played or got a knock.

They played the 90 minutes so no need for them to play today. Strange that Watkins starts with Ings and Archer on the bench. No idea who played up front against Fulham.

Looks like a strong lineup.

Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see that line up at Bournemouth

Just read that Ings played which explains why he's on the bench today. He scored the only goal of the game.

Anyone else having issues with Villa TV? I paid for the Villa TV+ season sub before the Oz tour, and on the Rennes link its saying I need a different sub to watch the game ffs
-
Bollocks.
-
Utter shite so far. 1-0
-
1-0 Rennes
-
Terrible defending.
-
Defensive cock up, two players had the ball at their feet in the box, we lose it and paid the price from a corner.
-
The cornalty returns
-
Sloppy to give the corner away then shit marking for the corner.

This is why I never bother. I’ve just tried to buy more storage for my phone, doesn’t recognise my password, so changed it. Within 30 seconds, it doesn’t recognise that one. Same with my share dealing. Intermittently doesn’t recognise my password, give it a week and it does. Most annoying are the security questions, which tell me I don’t remember where I went to school, my mothers maiden name, or what my favourite sports team is!

Shocking - smalltime stuff from the club. I'm on a blurry hesgoals - can any kind soul PM me anything better? Ta!

He didn't catch that as he meant to, but they all count.

Bailey. A bit fortunate but he bought a ticket.

Well done Leon

Got to be honest I've not been overly impressed by Kamara all pre season.

Yes. They probably need a full pre-season to sort it.

End of the first quarter...

Decent effort from Coutinho, hits the post from a free kick. Makes a change from Doug getting nowhere near.

Dangerous free kick for us just outside box, coutinho strikes the post/cross bar top corner

That's a really good effort with the free kick, keeper was totally out of the game.

They'll be needing proper league matches to get sharp of course.
-
Awful from Coutinho. Time and space to put a good ball in from the corner and he puts it straight out.
-
Great running until the ball goes out of play from Watkins
-
When we play out from back , they’re applying full team press which we’re struggling with big time
-
Watkins. Meh.
-
Too slow by Watkins on that loose ball. Bailey’s speed really is a positive.
-
Watkins, hit it first time FFS! You don't get time on the ball in Ligue 1 you know!
-
Fucking hell Watkins. Utter shite.
-
Carlos is very strong.
-
Watkins should have just put his foot through that.
-
Haha..OMG
-
Has anyone worked out our system of play, other than hoof it over the top for Watkins ?
-
Lovely frozen picture, thanks AVFC.
-
Has anyone worked out our system of play, other than hoof it over the top for Watkins ?
Fuck around with at the back?
-
Getting a decent striker in should be top of Gerard’s to-do list.
-
Kamara gives it away again, must have lost it more than he’s passed it this half, really not what I was expecting
-
McGinn’s passing hasn’t improved with the captaincy
-
I hope this isn't our good half.
-
Getting a decent striker in should be top of Gerard’s to-do list.
He's on the bench.
-
A shame that the purpose of the game is to get as many minutes into the legs of the starting 11, as at least 3 of those need changing at half time !
-
Kamara gives it away again, must have lost it more than he’s passed it this half, really not what I was expecting
Let’s sell him.
-
Watkins' first touch is really a cause for concern
-
HT. decent game and good opposition to be fair.
I think we have played some good stuff overall. Carlos looks the real deal. Kamara brings presence, Bailey terrifies them with his pace - aside the goal Martinez has been a spectator.
The weak spots not a surprise - Watkins, Luiz, and our crossing (terrible).
Ings on for Watkins 2nd Half.
-
Getting a decent striker in should be top of Gerard’s to-do list.
He's on the bench.

It is nice to see 65 year old Steve Mandanda in goal for Rennes, didn't realise he was still playing.
-
Non existent marking from that corner just before half time.
-
Getting a decent striker in should be top of Gerard’s to-do list.
He's on the bench.
True. Is he ready to be relied on for a whole season yet? Because Watkins sure isn’t.
-
Not overly impressive tbh, difficult to pick anyone out as having a good half.
-
Got back in the game fairly quickly after conceding and looked a bit better after the water break. Still not good enough in possession all over the pitch and give it away in dangerous areas at the back.
-
Non existent marking from that corner just before half time.
We most definitely miss Mings in this respect.
-
Watkins' first touch is really a cause for concern
His first touch has always been below average. I’m more worried that he hasn’t learned to beat a defender off of the dribble from a stop, and his awareness seems a little off today.
He might be more valuable out wide, but what is one thing Ollie has that Bailey doesn’t?
-
First pre season game I've seen and it's all a bit underwhelming for me.
Defence looks especially shaky. I'd like to see Buendia but that's not going to happen. At least Bailey looks quite lively.
-
It is nice to see 65 year old Steve Mandanda in goal for Rennes, didn't realise he was still playing.
Easy. He’s the same age as me. And tbf he plays in the only football position I could still do 90 mins in. 😊
-
Phil showed some nice touches, Bailey scored, everyone else was crap.
-
If Ings played a full game yesterday I see no point whatsoever in putting him on for the second half. Surely there is more to be learned by playing Archer against better quality opposition to see how he fares out? They/we know what Ings' capabilities are.
-
The weak spots not a surprise - Watkins, Luiz, and our crossing (terrible).
Ings on for Watkins 2nd Half.
Ings played yesterday. I'd like to see Archer given 45 minutes with the same Villa side, no mass changes, let's see what he can do today with looks pretty much the team to start next week.
-
Kamara gives it away again, must have lost it more than he’s passed it this half, really not what I was expecting
Let’s sell him.
Get rid I say. He’s had enough chances.
-
Martinez has a better first touch a yard off the goal line than Ollie does going to goal.

If he can’t do it against a team who he’s played against numerous times before how’s he going to cut it against the likes of Southampton…

Get rid I say. He’s had enough chances.
Or just pretend he's playing great and beyond criticism cos he's a new player.
Not that - but maybe leaping to judgment isn’t the best idea given recent experience
-
Good fannying at the start of the second half.
-
I see the thing where we pointlessly play short passes starting with Martinez around our box whilst under pressure has grown out of control during the summer.
-
Getting a decent striker in should be top of Gerard’s to-do list.
this
It will be a worry if he's decided to go with what we have up top.
-
What's the starting line up?
Martinez
Cash Konsa Carlos Digne
McGinn Kamara Luiz
Bailey Watkins Coutinho
Can't see us doing much with that line up this season tbh.
Little goal threat in midfield and would be bemused if Konsa starts next weekend ahead of Chambers.
Would be starting Ings if we're actually going to play Coutinho and Bailey either side of main CF. Or Archer.
-
Statues…..
-
Kamara is having a mare of a game.
-
McGinn is blowing out of his arse.
Season starts next week, mate.
-
Still conceding lots of possession. Hope that's sorted out soon.
-
Watkins header was abysmal
-
Watkins really has had a shit pre-season. He’s not very good.
-
Watkins needs glasses.
-
Watkins yet again showing he's not good enough.
-
Take Watkins off FFS
-
Watkins headed chance, should have done better
-
I suppose we do have to realise this is probably toughest game so far, in heat and against a team that missed out on champions league place by 1 last season
-
Watkins must hit the target from that.
-
Wank.
-
Watkins, cow's-arse, banjo...
-
I suppose we do have to realise this is probably toughest game so far, in heat and against a team that missed out on champions league place by 1 last season
No as the standard in Lige 1 is barely championship.
-
Watkins looked ok in a poor team as he ran around a lot which sometimes made stuff happen. But as we’ve picked up players with better technical ability, his lack of football intelligence and technique is being shown up. Time for Villa to move on. Cheers Ollie, you seem a decent chap and I’ve enjoyed watching you. He seemed to lose a yard of pace and a bit of energy and his technique got even worse when he had a child.
-
Personally I wouldn’t mind losing this 4-0 as long as I saw some signs of improvement or a workable system…..let’s be honest nothings changed or improved since Smith was here
-
Bring on the kids, they can't be any worse than this shit-show.
-

Lesson in there somewhere.
Great cross from McGinn lands perfectly on Watkins head inside the six yard box. He doesn't trouble the keeper with a free header. Shock.

That’s making us sound even worse 🤣. I think they’ve been pretty decent us against us tactically and passing
-
As last season no high press from us.
-
This is the first pre season game I’ve watched. I can only assume we’ve been better in other games? This is poor.
-

I mean that’s nonsense isn’t it.
-
Have you ever seen that bit in Airplane when the Air Stewardess tells the passengers that there's no coffee left? That's this thread.
Hope all the lads and lasses over there are having a great time.
-
we look to far away from each other
-
Love Diego’s physicality - great to see, he’s a big upgrade back there.
-
another year of Watkins up top and McGinn and Luiz in midfield will only get us a similar position to last season.
-
Don't want to say I told you so......same old CRAP
-
So slow and ploddy in possession.
-
Don't want to say I told you so......same old CRAP
Wait, this bluenose hasn't been banned yet?
-
Don't want to say I told you so......same old CRAP
I mean of course you do.
-
Loadsa subs...
-
Luiz off - thank god. Sell him please
-
Whatever the game plan is I hope we are holding back on it during these warm up games.
-
I reckon we are playing pretty well.
-
we look to far away from each other
I don't think that's the problem, but I do see what you mean, I think we're a bit soft with our passes, I'd like to see a bit more zip on the ball which would amke us look much closer together and would stop us getting the ball under so much pressure.
-
I'd sell Luiz if we can bring in another midfielder. I can't see what he is good at.
-
All I’ll say is how often do you see a team absolutely blaze through preseason and then struggle in the league? Quite often I’d say. I just wouldn’t write us off as hopeless just because we look short of a gallop at this stage.
-
Glad Luiz is off, he’s been very sloppy.
-
Think Konsa has gone off so can only presume Kamara has gone to centre half as Sanson and Tim have come on.
-
More questions than answers. Just can't see how we are trying to play. Midfield is so poor..
-
Bit like last season I’m struggling to see what the overall game plan is. There is no obvious pattern or style. We look disjointed and lack purpose.
It’s shite.
-
It's still only a preseason, but a little concerning that some old problems clearly remain.
-
Good effort from Bailey
-
Irroobenum?
-
Wonderful technique from Bailey. Little backlift but great power in the shot.
-
And why the fuck are we not wearing what is supposed to be our official kit? The claret shorts aren't on sale.
-
Good effort from Bailey
Good play by Tim on the edge of our area to get us in the front foot.
-
I think we are poor at the end of this pre-season because Gerrard didn't have a full pre-season last season.
-
Tim showed more in 2 mins than Luiz did in 67.
McGinn nearly cost us a goal there
-
It's not going to look too good if you drop your newly appointed captain for the first game.
-
Why play Buendia in a different game?
-
More subs, but I wanted to see KKH and Archer
-
I wonder if Bailey could cut it at CF….??
-
Ashley Young on, did KKH start yesterday?
-
Ashley Young, really?
-
FFS almost caught out AGAIN faffing around at the back.
-
More subs, but I wanted to see KKH and Archer
Both played against Fulham yesterday as did buendia and Mings
-
Fuck me this is a tedious watch.
-
Cmon cam
-
I think we are poor at the end of this pre-season because Gerrard didn't have a full pre-season last season.
I don't get it
-
More subs, but I wanted to see KKH and Archer
Both played against Fulham yesterday as did buendia and Mings
As did Ings who’s just come on.
-
Here comes Archer...
-
Set piece coach is still with us I see.
-
Seriously that could be the worst free kick I've ever seen from Villa. Wtaf was that?
-
I think we are poor at the end of this pre-season because Gerrard didn't have a full pre-season last season.
I don't get it
I'm just being facetious.
-
Cam almost scores
-
Goal Carlos
-
GOAL!
-
Carlos!
-
Carlos
-
Good goal that
-
Set piece coach is still with us I see.
*looks at goal replay*
yes
-
Queuing up to nod that in, good set piece.
-
Great ball in by Young.
-
:Get in!!!! Lovely goal Carlos
-
Nice rehearsed set piece.
-
Ashley Young, really?
I obviously know nothing
-
Poor from Ramsey, should have at least got a cross in.
-
Poor from Ramsey, should have at least got a cross in.
Or the corner.
-
Ashley young cross, despite the shite comments on his inclusion. I love this site, I really do, but the negativity sometimes drives me crazy.
-
Feeney on

Feeney on
Less of that sectarianism.

It would be shite on here if everyone posted rational, thoughtful stuff. Don't let it get to you.
-
I like Sanson. He gets stuck in and has a bit of energy about him, I reckon we'll see a fair amount of him this year - esp with the 5 subs thing.
-
Feeney on
Less of that sectarianism.
That made me laugh more than it should have

Ooh lovely bit of skill in the six yard box from Feeney.

Yes, very good by PW.
-
Sanson has played well again, I like him.
-
I'd sell Luiz if we can bring in another midfielder. I can't see what he is good at.
Agree he’s not good at anything
-
Feeney is a baller as the kids might or might not be saying.
-
Just saw a The Digby Water Orton flag. Our mom lives about two minutes away.
-
Sanson has played well again, I like him.
Can see why Gerrard seems to rate him having seen him fully fit in pre season.
-
Sanson has played well again, I like him.
Agree, him and Tim made big difference coming on.
-
Feeney is very confident for a kid.
-
Feeney is a baller as the kids might or might not be saying.
Irrationally, I hate 'baller'.
-
Good lad Tim. Rennes player gives him a shove, so Tim tries to split him in half.
-
Feeney is a baller as the kids might or might not be saying.
He’s had a couple of really assured touches and a burst of pace
-
I suspect what is going to happen is that Luiz being able to play more further forward is going to make feck all difference.
I just don't 'get' him.
-
Feeney is a baller as the kids might or might not be saying.

Is balloner okay?

I thought you probably would which is why I elaborated slightly!
-
Ooh lovely bit of skill in the six yard box from Feeney.
He's going to be a great centre half I reckon, very cool on the ball and reads the game brilliantly for his age.
-
Feeney is a baller as the kids might or might not be saying.
Please don't! You'll be posting TikTok videos next.
-
Hurrah we win again. One hand on the title, IMO.

Footballer will do.
-

He's just very average all over the pitch.

Just seen Ings leaving the pitch. When did he get on?
-

he looks very imposing

champions of France and Australia
-
Just seen Ings leaving the pitch. When did he get on?
Didn't even notice he was in the squad. When did he come on?
-
I still think pre season doesn't really tell you anything about the season ahead. I feel that Watkins and Doug are on borrowed time, we have a much stronger squad and the youngsters coming through look very promising but I still can't shake the feeling that we are going to finish in the same position again by May next year.
-
Despite the compalints on here I thought that was a decent performance against a team that tried to catch us with a high press, got the result and could've done better with 3-4 other chances whereas I can only think of 1 'real' save that martinez had to make after their goal.
My only complaint outside the odd individual error was that we were underweighing our passes. Tim, JJ and Sanson coming on helped because all of them zipped the ball about a little more and that, along with Rennes tiring, meant we looked like we had loads more time in the last 15-20minutes.
-
I suspect what is going to happen is that Luiz being able to play more further forward is going to make feck all difference.

And that’s when he’s at his best. Young Tim is more the kind of player that suits us.
-

Replaced Bailey with about 15 to go.
-
Been travelling over to west of Ireland today, so just come on this and scrolling through. Reading the comments i thought we were getting hammered, we won! Brilliant.
-
Were many of that Rennes team regulars last season that finished in the top four of Ligue Une?
-
Just saw a The Digby Water Orton flag. Our mom lives about two minutes away.
Used to drink in there a fair bit and played football for them for years. Not been in since well before covid. The gaffer is a big villa fan.

I agree with all of this. We need a new centre forward and perhaps (still) a centre midfielder.
-
Don’t think this squad will suddenly click.
Frustrating season ahead me thinks.
-
Weren't we unbeaten pre-season when di Matteo was in charge...
-
Agreed
Sometimes you’ve got to shake things up and we haven’t done that based on the lack of outgoings
-
from todays showing, there's clearly not enough pace in the squad.
-

We are unbeaten in pre-season, against decent opposition (maybe not Walsall). I realise that friendlies mean nothing, but for fucks sake!!!
-
Bad day Taylor?
-

I think that's a good point - we look technically decent at times, but having a fast outlet would make a big difference.
-
Well Bailey's pretty rapid. I know he can't do everything himself, but still. Quickest player we've had in a long time.
-
Bad day Taylor?
Ahh. Thanks for caring Riss, but no, not particularly, managed to catch a dodgy YouTube stream of the game and thought we did pretty well against a decent team on their turf.
-
It’s more about the performances being the same as the ones we’ve become use to over the last 3 yrs (bar when Jack was involved). Slow, one paced, side ways passing and no real consistency in tactics from the same group of players
-

Even more reasons to be optimistic.

Weren't we unbeaten pre-season when di Matteo was in charge...
Pretty sure there was one under O'Leary where we went to Sweden and twatted everyone in sight and then barely escaped relegation. After that I didn't give any credence to pre-season results.
-

We're not fickle, we just don't like pre-season results.
-
Does it boil anyone's else's piss when we pass it about under pressure in our own 18 yard area. It won't be long before we fuck this up and the opposition gets gifted a goal.
Why this has become vogue I really don't know.
-

I thought we looked a bit better in this respect when Kamara dropped into defence in the latter stages of the game after the raft of subs. He stepped up with the ball well from the deeper position, something which he struggled with earlier when he was in midfield.
-
Agree with others here that we dosent look good as a team. Still get the results. Positive individual performances today fx Martineez, Carlos, Kamara, Bailey, Couthino, Young!? and others of the substitutes. A Young captain on the pitch before Carlos and Martinez then.
-

No, you're never gonna get it, never ever gonna get it.
-
I think we were ok - I think we still have the same problems we had last season, just mitigated by having a couple of key additions.
Defense - Carlos looks really good - really composed. I think I would rather see him parterned with Mings though, as I think his vocalness is important to the team - that seems too quiet otherwise.
Cash and Digne look good going forward, but today at least lacked the final ball - cash particularly.
Kamara looks good, very composed on the ball. Luiz and McGinn are ok, but havent improved in the last 3 years. Luis can look very composed but, also a bit average at time. McGinn gives the ball away too much - but than can do something brillant. I think one of sanson or ramsey has to play instead of luiz, as there ability to travel with the ball gives us something different and stops it from becoming to samey
The 10s, kind of felt like they never knew exactly where they should be and struggled to influence the game - with Bailey it is less of an issue because of his pace and movement. Coutinho when hes not on the ball lacks the energy of Emi2 and looks better more central, he always looks class on the ball - but you need him to have the ball where he can hurt teams
Watkins looks shot, needs one to go in off his arse or something to help him. But his first touch is worse than mine, and his movement looks a bit off. Ings I didnt realise had come on, but is a smart footballer who we know can score goals. Archer looks tidy, but cant see him getting too many chances as it appears he is a distant 3rd choice. I would be tempted to try Bailey as a 9.
We look pretty solid and it just feels like it needs a few sparks for things to really click.
Still done the wiser as whether well finish 7 or 14th, but if were getting results without playing great (albeit in friendles) I'll take that as positive
-

Yeah - I think we looked less like we were about to shit ourselves with Kamara and Carlos in the team
-
Feeney on
Less of that sectarianism.
:) I better not mention Tim then.
-

Why this has become vogue I really don't know.
Teams do this because the high press defence has become popular so keeping the ball at the back a bit longer should, in theory, draw the opposition forward and create space to attack into or leave gaps in midfield.
-
I can see Coutinho becoming more of an 8 then more of a 6 over the next few years.
Interesting that Gerrard partnered Konsa with Diego Carlos. I wonder if he's trying to re-create the Sevilla centre back partnership with Diego Carlos and a younger centre back alongside him.
I think we'll make progress this season but we still need another quality midfielder and a striker who can play on his own and hold the ball up well, while being lethal in front of goal.
Iroegbunam seems to have overtaken Nakamba in the pecking order over pre-season. I would still be thinking of loaning the kid out and getting him ready to step up next season.
I think it would be good to get Feeney out on loan too even though he's only 17. He looks like he could go and do a job at Championship level already.
-

I agree. Since this tactic has become permissible it seems that virtually every football team in the land, at whatever level and no matter how hopeless they are, are of a mind that it is now compulsory to fanny about in your own 18 yard box from a goal kick.
-
I will say zis only warnce "take that Rennais" walk away.
-
Thought that was a very decent run out. More positives than negatives. Renais are a good team so just what we needed a week out.
Carlos was very good. Martinez had one save to make - and he made it. Kamara needs time, but showed glimpses of the player he will become. Thought Sanson looked good too. Tim, Cam, Josh, Jacob didn’t look out of place at all. Despite the quality of the opposition, we restricted them to very little real threat.
The negative is that the big weakness with this team showed up again - Watkins and Luiz are just not good enough. The latter is too static and slow - he will fare better in La Liga or Serie A and needs to be sold. Watkins works so hard but if he’s going to play lone striker he has to be able to finish and right now, he can’t find the target. Running out of time.
I worry they will both start against Bournemouth - and if they do it’s a sign Gerrard feels he has no other better alternatives, or that he’s trying to shoe horn a style that doesn’t fit the players he has at his disposal. And on both counts, that’s a concern.
UTV
-
Watkins's touch has been poor for the last year and I can't see it getting any better. He's the weak link in what is looking quite a promising team.
-
Apparently we played Fulham yesterday? Do we know the score?
-
Won one-nil (Ings).

I was yet again disappointed with Coutinho, one free kick apart. It's obvious he's the first name to go on the team sheet and I guess we'll just have to get used to it.
-

We did, which is why Archer and Ings only got a few minutes game time today.

Thanks Legion. I saw that the likes of Mings, Traore etc weren't in the squad today, can't help feeling that Gerrard would be happy to see them go. Unless Tyrone got a knock.
-
I couldn't watch the game but here is what I read on the web site of l'équipe. " Rennes played well at times agaisnt a promising Villa team on paper and already impressive on the pitch"".
Anyway, happy with the win.
-

Agree, he’s a class act and some of the things he does are brilliant but he doesn’t show it often enough for me, whether it’s him or the system doesn’t suit I’m not sure. On current form and taking into account the last few games last season it should be Buendia and Bailey.
Buendia’s got a goal threat, creativity and work rate but as you say Phil will no doubt get the nod.
-
I like Emi B, and think he can be a cracking player, but was it 8 goals Coutinho was involved with (either scoring or assisting) in 19 games ish last year? There might be a perception that he’s less involved because he doesn’t charge around, but the idea that he’s not key is just nuts.
-
I like Sanson. He gets stuck in and has a bit of energy about him, I reckon we'll see a fair amount of him this year - esp with the 5 subs thing.
I liked him before it was popular.
-
Don’t think you’re too wrong with those stats, I remember he had a stormer (against Southampton?) where he scored a couple missed a few other great chances and got an assist. Think it’s just frustrating on my part as he’s got everything but the consistency isn’t there, however I suppose if it was, he wouldn’t be playing for us.
Hopefully he’s still building up fitness and confidence as he’s clearly one SG’s main men.
-
Has Guilbert gone?

He was amazing against Southampton. He’s a brilliant player - think he like the rest of the team just feel like they need a bit of a spark to light and give it all that but extra
It all looks good and the results have been good in pre season - but just feels it needs a little something to create that swagger in the team that is currently missing
-
Has Guilbert gone?
Training with the kids from what I read. Chucky and Traore seem to have joined him.
-
Phil is not helped by having Watkins in front for him, he just doesn't read Phil's play. I wonder if we could play Phil, Emi B and Bailey across the front and drop Watkins and Ings to the bench.Of course the time to try that would have been pre-season, which just ended.
-

Especially when, after fannying around for ages, we end up under the cosh and hoof it. Might as well bloody hoof it to begin with, and avoid the risk of handing the opposition a goal by stuffing up.
And yes, I understand what this approach is *supposed* to do. I don't think we're achieving this though.
-
Good wirknoutvn extreme heat. Just gives everyone the urge for more European nights
-
what was the score ?
-
Good day out. and a excellent win it was so hot inside the ground
Carlos is going to be a fan’s favourite, but young Feeney looks as though he could be very special - the new Gareth Barry at his age
Still think we need another midfielder and a striker
-
what was the score ?
2-1 us
-
I didn’t see the match so my conclusion from reading the comments on here is that:
We are very shaky defensively to almost useless.
We have no pace and are one dimensional.
Kamara is waste of space but slightly better than Luiz.
We need 3 more central defensive midfielders.
We need 5 free scoring strikers to insure we have cover for all eventualities.

We started slowly but were the better team once we got up to speed.
One or two decent performances, some players looked rusty.
Gerrard’s style will not be universally popular with fans.
We won.

A team is more likely to retain the ball and find space to move into attacking positions by doing it. An aimless hoof up the pitch has no guarantee of anything.

Yep. I think it's part of the reason it looks like Mings isn't going to be starting the season as first choice. We clearly want to pass the ball out more, and the other defenders are more comfortable on the ball than he is.

We won.
This is a fair summary.
The only thing I would add is we have enough midfielders - just working out the best mix.
I think the concerns are legitimate about the forward options

A team is more likely to retain the ball and find space to move into attacking positions by doing it. An aimless hoof up the pitch has no guarantee of anything.
Yep. I think it's part of the reason it looks like Mings isn't going to be starting the season as first choice. We clearly want to pass the ball out more, and the other defenders are more comfortable on the ball than he is.
I'm a mere layman on this matter, no expert*, but for me the most crucial element of beating the press is the ability of whoever receives the first ball into midfield to play it out again first time. If you take a touch there, you will be swamped.
*tongue in cheek, obviously I am an expert and anyone that disagrees is wrong.

Would like to have seen Archer get more time.
Some fairly poor performances and up front looks a problem.
Need to be better against Bournemouth.

Playing out from the back like that actually serves two purposes. The first, and ideal one, is as others have said that if you can beat the press and play out from the back you have possession while attacking and a possible overload. But the retained possession is the key part. The second, less effective thing it delivers (and which we rely on too often) is that when a team commits to a press, it leaves more space behind and potentially stretches the play. A centre-half hitting it long-ish towards the forwards "over the top" of a press has a better chance of success than one hoofed towards the forwards when the opposition are all sat thirty yards further back.
Invite them on in the hope of playing through them, but play it over the top of the press if needed. And if your forwards are getting particular joy in their personal battles, or running the channels well, then you can always skip the playing out from back bit if the circumstances dictate.
It often has my heart in my mouth watching us do it, but over a season I'm confident we'll benefit more than it costs us.

Excellent summary of why it's done.

I looked at a Stade Rennais forum and their fans thought we totally controlled the second half, kept the ball better, were faster and fitter than them and that bar the first ten minutes it was men against boys.
There were also comments that it showed the gulf in quality between the PL and Ligue 1.

To be fair to them that is a pretty decent description of events as I saw them. We were sloppy for thier goal but other than that it looked like a pre season game for us. The work out in blistering heat would of done no harm for fitness either.
Would like to hear the explanation behind leaving ply3rs out, the Fulham game and I believe we play lpool on Tuesday as well.

When I did my coaching badges 'Playing out from the Back' was worked on in four different ways. It certainly doesn't just mean passing out via the centre halves, 'round' the opposition. You can play direct 'into' one of your midfielders, typically when they drop in. This should have been Kamara but it didn't happen at all yesterday. You can also play 'onto' either full backs who are pushed up high. Villa did this a lot yesterday. Finally you can play out by going 'over' and direct from goalkeeper to forward line. Man City do this really well. When coaching myself I would encourage my goal keeper to go direct to push teams back when they had begun to push up and make playing out difficult. Emi very rarely acts quickly to set up a quick counter attack like this.

I was just thinking the exact same thing, I used to love his quick, long throws to launch an attack. I can't remember the last time he made one.

We need someone demanding a quick restart like Grealish did.

Yep, would love to see a few counters like this one this season, but perhaps with Bailey carrying it forward...

Another good pre season win I'm pleased For Leon Bailey scoring again and for Diego Carlos he looks the real deal.

I mentioned this during the game when he did it, but superb skill and confidence from young Feeney. I'm going to stick my neck out and say he'll be the pick of all the kids we've got coming through.

Not sure if he'll be the pick of them but I do think he's gonig to be a great player, he reads the game like he's been playing top level football for years and it makes him look like he's always got time and space on the ball and he's always where he needs to be in defence. I really like Bogarde as well, who isn't quite as cultured but has an extra yard of pace.

Record number of people caught in dingies on the Channel. Are they sure its the residue of Villa fans returning back from Rennes :-)

I have been impressed with him every time I've seen him, he has fitted in easily at every level and I have been enthusing about him to everyone. By chance his schoolmate was next to me at Walsall - among 4,000 Villa fans. I told him to tell Josh that he already has a fan club.
