Title: Stade Rennais v Aston Villa pre-season friendly thread
Post by: Risso on July 26, 2022, 09:49:54 AM
Rennes v Aston Villa

Saturday 30 July 5pm

Be very interesting to see the starting line up. I'd like to see something like this:

                   Martinez

Cash           Chambers         Carlos         Digne

               Kamara           Sanson

Bailey             Buendia          Coutinho

                     Watkins

I'd be happy if Archer started, but seeing as Watkins is still our first choice striker we need to get him into some sort of form.

No Watkins and Ings up front, I said no Watkins and Ings up front!

Interesting, that might be a good line-up. Sanson, Bailey, and Buendia all seem to play at a higher tempo and Buendia likes to play balls through the middle which would be good for Watkins.

I would go with that and hope to god that he has finally dropped the Watkins Ings idea.

I’m more disappointed someone couldn’t have titled the thread as a tribute to The Four Tops. Opportunity missed.

I just don't think he sees having both Coutinho and Buendia starting together in the same side.

I would much prefer if he went with the team Risso selected. However, I expect he will go with:

                       Martinez

          Cash  Carlos    Mings   Digne

            McGinn Kamara Ramsey

                Bailey   Coutinho

                     Watkins

I'd be happy if Archer started, but seeing as Watkins is still our first choice striker we need to get him into some sort of form.

I love us to try this, but just don't see him leaving Ramsey or McGinn out.  He wouldn't even drop them for Sanson last season when it was clear they were struggling.  Luiz would also be a good fit for that spot.

Arguably it looks too attacking, but I think people underestimate just how combatitive Buendia can be and he could drop back to make a 3 in midfield when required.

I would think that the team that starts this game will be the team that starts against Bournemouth, (unless we make a top quality signing next week)

Mings will start the game, Watkins will also start the game.

Definitely start with Risso's selection and see how it goes. I would like to see how it works against a reasonable opposition.

I guess the other option would be 3 at the back [lights fuse, steps back]

Now see, your first sentence was great, and if you'd left it at that you'd have cemented your place as one of the up and coming members to look out for. But no, you had to go and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory didn't you?

It was really corny but I really liked it. It had the same sort of am-dram production as Dad's Army and like Dad's Army the occasional comedy gold nugget thrown in. Vicki Michelle in her black stockings and stilettos might have something to do with my fond memories of the show.

Should be a good test, they finished fourth last season.

Can’t say I know too many of their players though? Guirassy up front, the defender Traore and then Steve Mandanda plays their now but can’t see any well known players.

Rennes have just sold a 17 year old striker to Bayern Munich for best part of £30m because they needed the cash. He's thought of as one of the best prospects around.

Has Bailey ever had a start within our strongest XI? Really looking forward to seeing if he can carry on the form from the United game.

I think his pace and the runs he makes inside the fullback off the right will give Countinho/Buendia the option they need to split defences with their passing.

They played the 90 minutes so no need for them to play today. Strange that Watkins starts with Ings and Archer on the bench. No idea who played up front against Fulham.

Are there any reports on what the line-up was?

Just read that Ings played which explains why he's on the bench today. He scored the only goal of the game.

I quite fancied going, but me and my mate are abseiling down the Holte End tomorrow for the Villa Foundation instead. That’s enough adventure for one weekend.

Let's have your fundraiser details then.

If anyone would like to sponsor us, you can do so here:

https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jm-dy2022 (https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jm-dy2022)

The money goes to the Villa Foundation’s Dementia Cafe project which helps people living with dementia take part in activities they might not normally get a chance to.

Thanks!

Donated in memory of my Dad. Good luck with it, hope you have a great time.
Clicked on the link above but I can't see anywhere to make a donation. Any ideas anyone?

This is why I never bother. I’ve just tried to buy more storage for my phone, doesn’t recognise my password, so changed it. Within 30 seconds, it doesn’t recognise that one. Same with my share dealing. Intermittently doesn’t recognise my password, give it a week and it does. Most annoying are the security questions, which tell me I don’t remember where I went to school, my mothers maiden name, or what my favourite sports team is!

HT. decent game and good opposition to be fair.

I think we have played some good stuff overall. Carlos looks the real deal. Kamara brings presence, Bailey terrifies them with his pace - aside the goal Martinez has been a spectator.

The weak spots not a surprise - Watkins, Luiz, and our crossing (terrible).

Ings on for Watkins 2nd Half.

Watkins' first touch is really a cause for concern

His first touch has always been below average. I’m more worried that he hasn’t learned to beat a defender off of the dribble from a stop, and his awareness seems a little off today.

He might be more valuable out wide, but what is one thing Ollie has that Bailey doesn’t?

Kamara gives it away again, must have lost it more than he’s passed it this half, really not what I was expecting

Let’s sell him.
Get rid I say. He’s had enough chances.

Or just pretend he's playing great and beyond criticism cos he's a new player.

Not that - but maybe leaping to judgment isn’t the best idea given recent experience

I see the thing where we pointlessly play short passes starting with Martinez around our box whilst under pressure has grown out of control during the summer.

Getting a decent striker in should be top of Gerard’s to-do list.
  this
It will be a worry if he's decided to go with what we have up top.

What's the starting line up?

Martinez
Cash Konsa Carlos Digne
McGinn Kamara Luiz
Bailey Watkins Coutinho

Can't see us doing much with that line up this season tbh.

Little goal threat in midfield and would be bemused if Konsa starts next weekend ahead of Chambers.

Would be starting Ings if we're actually going to play Coutinho and Bailey either side of main CF. Or Archer.

Watkins looked ok in a poor team as he ran around a lot which sometimes made stuff happen. But as we’ve picked up players with better technical ability, his lack of football intelligence and technique is being shown up. Time for Villa to move on. Cheers Ollie, you seem a decent chap and I’ve enjoyed watching you. He seemed to lose a yard of pace and a bit of energy and his technique got even worse when he had a child.

Great cross from McGinn lands perfectly on Watkins head inside the six yard box. He doesn't trouble the keeper with a free header. Shock.

I don't think that's the problem, but I do see what you mean, I think we're a bit soft with our passes, I'd like to see a bit more zip on the ball which would amke us look much closer together and would stop us getting the ball under so much pressure.

I suspect what is going to happen is that Luiz being able to play more further forward is going to make feck all difference.

I just don't 'get' him.

He's just very average all over the pitch.

I still think pre season doesn't really tell you anything about the season ahead. I feel that Watkins and Doug are on borrowed time, we have a much stronger squad and the youngsters coming through look very promising but I still can't shake the feeling that we are going to finish in the same position again by May next year.

Despite the compalints on here I thought that was a decent performance against a team that tried to catch us with a high press, got the result and could've done better with 3-4 other chances whereas I can only think of 1 'real' save that martinez had to make after their goal.

My only complaint outside the odd individual error was that we were underweighing our passes. Tim, JJ and Sanson coming on helped because all of them zipped the ball about a little more and that, along with Rennes tiring, meant we looked like we had loads more time in the last 15-20minutes.

I thought we looked a bit better in this respect when Kamara dropped into defence in the latter stages of the game after the raft of subs. He stepped up with the ball well from the deeper position, something which he struggled with earlier when he was in midfield.

I think we were ok - I think we still have the same problems we had last season, just mitigated by having a couple of key additions.

Defense - Carlos looks really good - really composed.  I think I would rather see him parterned with Mings though, as I think his vocalness is important to the team - that seems too quiet otherwise.

Cash and Digne look good going forward, but today at least lacked the final ball - cash particularly.

Kamara looks good, very composed on the ball.   Luiz and McGinn are ok, but havent improved in the last 3 years.  Luis can look very composed but, also a bit average at time.   McGinn gives the ball away too much - but than can do something brillant.  I think one of sanson or ramsey has to play instead of luiz, as there ability to travel with the ball gives us something different and stops it from becoming to samey

The 10s, kind of felt like they never knew exactly where they should be and struggled to influence the game - with Bailey it is less of an issue because of his pace and movement.  Coutinho when hes not on the ball lacks the energy of Emi2 and looks better more central, he always looks class on the ball - but you need him to have the ball where he can hurt teams

Watkins looks shot, needs one to go in off his arse or something to help him.  But his first touch is worse than mine, and his movement looks a bit off.  Ings I didnt realise had come on, but is a smart footballer who we know can score goals.  Archer looks tidy, but cant see him getting too many chances as it appears he is a distant 3rd choice.  I would be tempted to try Bailey as a 9.

We look pretty solid and it just feels like it needs a few sparks for things to really click.

Still done the wiser as whether well finish 7 or 14th, but if were getting results without playing great (albeit in friendles) I'll take that as positive

Teams do this because the high press defence has become popular so keeping the ball at the back a bit longer should, in theory, draw the opposition forward and create space to attack into or leave gaps in midfield.

I can see Coutinho becoming more of an 8 then more of a 6 over the next few years.

Interesting that Gerrard partnered Konsa with Diego Carlos. I wonder if he's trying to re-create the Sevilla centre back partnership with Diego Carlos and a younger centre back alongside him.

I think we'll make progress this season but we still need another quality midfielder and a striker who can play on his own and hold the ball up well, while being lethal in front of goal.

Iroegbunam seems to have overtaken Nakamba in the pecking order over pre-season. I would still be thinking of loaning the kid out and getting him ready to step up next season.

I think it would be good to get Feeney out on loan too even though he's only 17. He looks like he could go and do a job at Championship level already.

Thought that was a very decent run out. More positives than negatives. Renais are a good team so just what we needed a week out.

Carlos was very good. Martinez had one save to make - and he made it. Kamara needs time, but showed glimpses of the player he will become. Thought Sanson looked good too. Tim, Cam, Josh, Jacob didn’t look out of place at all. Despite the quality of the opposition, we restricted them to very little real threat.

The negative is that the big weakness with this team showed up again - Watkins and Luiz are just not good enough. The latter is too static and slow - he will fare better in La Liga or Serie A and needs to be sold. Watkins works so hard but if he’s going to play lone striker he has to be able to finish and right now, he can’t find the target. Running out of time.

I worry they will both start against Bournemouth - and if they do it’s a sign Gerrard feels he has no other better alternatives, or that he’s trying to shoe horn a style that doesn’t fit the players he has at his disposal. And on both counts, that’s a concern.

UTV

Agree, he’s a class act and some of the things he does are brilliant but he doesn’t show it often enough for me, whether it’s him or the system doesn’t suit I’m not sure. On current form and taking into account the last few games last season it should be Buendia and Bailey.
Buendia’s got a goal threat, creativity and work rate but as you say Phil will no doubt get the nod.

I like Emi B, and think he can be a cracking player, but was it 8 goals Coutinho was involved with (either scoring or assisting) in 19 games ish last year? There might be a perception that he’s less involved because he doesn’t charge around, but the idea that he’s not key is just nuts.

Don’t think you’re too wrong with those stats, I remember he had a stormer (against Southampton?) where he scored a couple missed a few other great chances and got an assist. Think it’s just frustrating on my part as he’s got everything but the consistency isn’t there, however I suppose if it was, he wouldn’t be playing for us.
Hopefully he’s still building up fitness and confidence as he’s clearly one  SG’s main men.

He was amazing against Southampton.  He’s a brilliant player - think he like the rest of the team just feel like they need a bit of a spark to light and give it all that but extra

It all looks good and the results have been good in pre season - but just feels it needs a little something to create that swagger in the team that is currently missing

Phil is not helped by having Watkins in front for him, he just doesn't read Phil's play. I wonder if we could play Phil, Emi B and Bailey across the front and drop Watkins and Ings to the bench.Of course the time to try that would have been pre-season, which just ended.

Especially when, after fannying around for ages, we end up under the cosh and hoof it. Might as well bloody hoof it to begin with, and avoid the risk of handing the opposition a goal by stuffing up.

And yes, I understand what this approach is *supposed* to do. I don't think we're achieving this though.

We are very shaky defensively to almost useless.
We have no pace and are one dimensional.
Kamara is waste of space but slightly better than Luiz.
We need 3 more central defensive midfielders.
We need 5 free scoring strikers to insure we have cover for all eventualities.

Yep. I think it's part of the reason it looks like Mings isn't going to be starting the season as first choice. We clearly want to pass the ball out more, and the other defenders are more comfortable on the ball than he is.

The only thing I would add is we have enough midfielders - just working out the best mix.
I think the concerns are legitimate about the forward options

A team is more likely to retain the ball and find space to move into attacking positions by doing it. An aimless hoof up the pitch has no guarantee of anything.

Yep. I think it's part of the reason it looks like Mings isn't going to be starting the season as first choice. We clearly want to pass the ball out more, and the other defenders are more comfortable on the ball than he is.

I'm a mere layman on this matter, no expert*, but for me the most crucial element of beating the press is the ability of whoever receives the first ball into midfield to play it out again first time. If you take a touch there, you will be swamped.

*tongue in cheek, obviously I am an expert and anyone that disagrees is wrong.

Would like to have seen Archer get more time.
Some fairly poor performances and up front looks a problem.
Need to be better against Bournemouth.

Playing out from the back like that actually serves two purposes.  The first, and ideal one, is as others have said that if you can beat the press and play out from the back you have possession while attacking and a possible overload.  But the retained possession is the key part.  The second, less effective thing it delivers (and which we rely on too often) is that when a team commits to a press, it leaves more space behind and potentially stretches the play.  A centre-half hitting it long-ish towards the forwards "over the top" of a press has a better chance of success than one hoofed towards the forwards when the opposition are all sat thirty yards further back.

Invite them on in the hope of playing through them, but play it over the top of the press if needed.  And if your forwards are getting particular joy in their personal battles, or running the channels well, then you can always skip the playing out from back bit if the circumstances dictate.

It often has my heart in my mouth watching us do it, but over a season I'm confident we'll benefit more than it costs us.

Excellent summary of why it's done.

I looked at a Stade Rennais forum and their fans thought we totally controlled the second half, kept the ball better, were faster and fitter than them and that bar the first ten minutes it was men against boys.

There were also comments that it showed the gulf in quality between the PL and Ligue 1.

To be fair to them that is a pretty decent description of events as I saw them. We were sloppy for thier goal but other than that it looked like a pre season game for us. The work out in blistering heat would of done no harm for fitness either.

Would like to hear the explanation behind leaving ply3rs out, the Fulham game and I believe we play lpool on Tuesday as well.

When I did my coaching badges 'Playing out from the Back' was worked on in four different ways. It certainly doesn't just mean passing out via the centre halves, 'round' the opposition.  You can play direct 'into' one of your midfielders, typically when they drop in. This should have been Kamara but it didn't happen at all yesterday. You can also play 'onto' either full backs who are pushed up high. Villa did this a lot yesterday. Finally you can play out by going 'over' and  direct from goalkeeper to forward line. Man City do this really well. When coaching myself I would encourage my goal keeper to go direct to push teams back when they had begun to push up and make playing out difficult.  Emi very rarely acts quickly to set up a quick counter attack like this.

I was just thinking the exact same thing, I used to love his quick, long throws to launch an attack. I can't remember the last time he made one.

We need someone demanding a quick restart like Grealish did.

Yep, would love to see a few counters like this one this season, but perhaps with Bailey carrying it forward...

Another good pre season win I'm pleased For Leon Bailey scoring again and for Diego Carlos he looks the real deal.

I mentioned this during the game when he did it, but superb skill and confidence from young Feeney. I'm going to stick my neck out and say he'll be the pick of all the kids we've got coming through.

Not sure if he'll be the pick of them but I do think he's gonig to be a great player, he reads the game like he's been playing top level football for years and it makes him look like he's always got time and space on the ball and he's always where he needs to be in defence. I really like Bogarde as well, who isn't quite as cultured but has an extra yard of pace.

I have been impressed with him every time I've seen him, he has fitted in easily at every level and I have been enthusing about him to everyone. By chance his schoolmate was next to me at Walsall - among 4,000 Villa fans. I told him to tell Josh that he already has a fan club.
