Sid , Des and maybe Jimmy would need a good spell in the Gym to bulk up to that size . Ron Saunders looked like that anyway !

He did indeed. Looked fitter than all of the players of that era, absolute beast of a physique.

I think you can buy a month sports pass for £25 , which is a bit steep. I am sure someone on here , nearer the time  will advise a cheaper option. (hopefully!)

Of course, when a villa documentary finally came along it would have to be on a channel that isn't easy to access.

Enjoyed it thoroughly. I think (I hope I am wrong) that Jimmy Rimmer will never understand what  a part he played in Villa winning the European Cup and more importantly being a member of Aston Villa's greatest ever football team.

Was there at all the home games and the final.  Just watched it on BT Sport.  Bless Jimmy he still feels it.  But my god on reflection it was Tony Morley throughout won it for us through all the rounds.

I don’t think there is mate, they stream some things on YouTube but that’s just for live stuff, I’m sure someone will record it, copy it and have it uploaded to YouTube or the like before long though.

Back in the day we'd have had the opportunity to buy it on VHS or Betamax.

Would live to see it though at some point.

Wonderful programme.  I'd completely forgotten about the crowd trouble against Anderlecht and the possibility we might have been kicked out of the competition. Wasn't the chap who was on the pitch reportedly serving for the army in Europe somewhere and not even a Villa fan, or is that bollox?  I thought Rimmer cut a very troubled soul appearance.  He was similar at the 25th Anniversary at VP maybe it was just edited that way, maybe a bit of both.

Same here.
I still have all of the season reviews somewhere along with some video diary things aswell.
It's a shame that they haven't found their way onto YouTube or some other method.
I guess it's a copyright issue even after all these years.

It reminded me of a few things

What a cock end Gary Newbon was focusing on the fan trouble

Just how cool Ron Saunders was with the media - also what a tough bastard he was

How he basically told Andy Gray to do one and then built a team with the proceeds.

How he committed the ultimate sin in joining the shower down the road yet we still hold him dear rather than hate him (Think of all the other losers that have gone that way)

How the fuck did Mortimer not get an England cap?

How much the marketing / media of football has changed  - the AGM on a makeshift scaffolded stage - laughable

How a few of them heroes will probably not be around for the 50 years celebration.

Wonderful film - pity i could not record it due to the overun of the match but at least it is to be repeated.

Just watched it. Bloody marvellous. Some eye openers in there also, like the bottle of brandy Ron had in the dressing room before every match which he encouraged the players to take a pre match swig to put some "fire in the belly" Seeing Jimmy Rimmer in tears was gut wrenching but he did more than most to get us there in the first place especially with his miraculous save from the penalty rebound against Dynamo Berlin. Tony Gubba's interview with Tony Barton after the game was horrible. Barton was smiling from ear to ear obviously and Gubba asked him if he'd seen the programme and would he be keeping it as a souvenir. He the heartlessly pointed out that Saunders picture was in it instead of his. You could see the joy drain out of Tony Bartons face. I really felt for him, that was totally unnecessary. But it was a great watch warts and all which bought back some long forgotten memories. We were Kings of all Europe and that can never be taken away from us.

Absolutely superb documentary, shame it can't be bought, I'd watch it again. The quality of some of the archive footage was far superior to some I've got on DVD. Especially the footage from the final day of the season at Highbury. Was the implication from Sid and Morely that they visited a brothel in Rotterdam the day before the final?? Really felt for Jimmy Rimmer, he doesn't seem to realise how amazing he was getting Villa to the final in the first place.

It's really well put together. Sensitively done, and Mark Williams is a great choice as narrator.
Great insights from the team of what went on behind the scenes, and a real tear-jerker in places seeing Sid's eyes sparkle again at the memories. And a real sense of that team being there for each other still after all these years. No greater compliment to Saunders than the togetherness that shines through 40 years on. Watched it on the train up to the game yesterday, and was in bits by the end credits.

It's not in their schedule at the moment, and is only available on demand until the start of June. Really annoyed at that, as BT boxes failed to record it because the Rangers final went to extra time.

Absolutely. He was immense for us. I bet he doesn't even know how much he means to us. I'd love him to hear us singing the 12 days of Christmas song about the European Cup win. He's the only one who's name is sung in every one of those 12 verses. And that interview with Ron Saunders after the home defeat to Ipswich is the stuff of legends. And i'd love them to find room in or around the ground for a banner which simply reads "do you wana bet against us" With Ron's picture wearing his light blue tracksuit top with the claret lion on it.

The sound track was nailed on for the music. Especially when we had to play Dynamo Kyiev in Crimea! Depeche Mode.

Even footage of our supporters saying how bad the hotels were there, top marks to those lads.

That was only my second trip abroad, if you discount the annual trip to the family in Dublin, and we had an absolute blast. Left on Monday night by coach, arrived Tuesday and had a blast with 4000 Villa fans in Brussels then home on the Thursday afternoon. The skirmishes in the ground were well documented but there was no trouble elsewhere (that we were aware of) and we had good crack with Anderlecht fans in the centre after the game.

For 2-3 days it was absolutely brilliant bumping into people we knew from home, all following the Villa for years, including dodgy away days. We were 19, champions of England, there was a vibrant music scene in Brum and we were on the way to becoming champions of Europe. I just wish all the younger fans who’ve known little success in the past 25 years get to taste something like this. It was intoxicating.

Thank you.

The WeTransfer link should be available for 7 days.

I don't have the software to join the files together, but it would be great to have as one file if anyone can edit.Thanks.

Why haven't the official history and the Villa Park 100 years ever made it to youtube? Would it be the same problem as here?

The Club should make those classics available. There is very little good villa content to reminisce on

I'd like an updated Villa history documentary but, preferably, when we have actually bloody won something again. Ideally before our 150th birthday. No rush, lads...

Couldn't sleep tonight so what to do? Watch the BT documentary of course. It was superb with lots of new footage and of course the interviews with the 81/82 legends. Consider myself v lucky to have been a ST holder during the 80/81 and 81/82 seasons and even more so to have been at Highbury and Rotterdam as a 16 and 17 yr old. Got pretty emotional watching that and thinking of the mates I shared those times with. Great days indeed.

Thanks again to Gerrin for his work

I like to see the club commission a remastered Blu-ray of the European Cup final. Amazing things can be done these days with old footage. It'd be great to see it with rich colours and a much sharper image. The DVD released some years ago wasn't that great quality. Obviously they'd need to work on the original master tape from ITV.

Glad you enjoyed it, I have to say it's probably the best Villa documentary I've seen. Far too good to be hidden away on a subscription channel for only a few to see. The Highbury section was the highlight for me. 15,000 Villa fans in the clock end looked absolutely insane.

I know why the forum does this and obviously fair enough. As a general point though I can’t help thinking that requiring people to have massive clobbering subscriptions to everything that TV/Streaming companies are asking for it.

Just watched it. Absolutely outstanding film from start to finish. A brilliant actor and Villa fan narrating it, generous highlights and rare footage, the cracking stories (Morley and Saunders' on-going rows!), poor Jimmy Rimmer's tears, the contemporary ever-shifting soundtrack (a sure sign that the programme had a decent budget) and the lovely tribute at the end to three of the men involved who have since passed-on.

Plus, there was enough quirky animation to nudge any kids in your life towards getting the Villa bug. Only thing I could criticise it for was no mention of Sir Brian when discussing Villa's ascent in the late-70s, concentrating on Andy Gray alone.

9/10 and thanks so much Gerrin for organising the download.

40 years on, I missed out on those days due to being T-2.5 years old but documents like this make me proud to be a Villan.

I've yet to see this, I will at some point.

When the players came out before the Palace game and the Theme From An Unmade Silent Movie was played it hit me like a hammer how much that period meant to me. I was only 10/11 but it was the foundation of my support, where there was no cynicism, bitterness or negativity, just starry eyed wonder at these heroes and their achievements. I'm sure it happens with every child when they first watch their team, and why I felt so much for those kids who worshiped Joe only for him to turn his back on them.

These players are the last of a certain generation as well. No big money or lavish lifestyle and that's reflected in the fact that they have a special bond with the fans that sees them happy to rub shoulders with us in the clubs and pubs around Villa Park.

We, whether as kids like me or adults at the time, are so very lucky to have lived through a time of exceptional success achieved by exceptional players and we should continue to cherish it and the club should never take it for granted.

Thanks Gerrin.

Just watched the ITV match broadcast via Villa TV - with Jimmy Greaves, Ron Atkinson, Brian Clough, and Brian Moore giving us those immortal words.

I'd never seen the whole game before.

That and the BT Sport Documentary took me right back 80-81 and then on to De Kuip for that marvellous, nervous, triumphant Wednesday evening.

Wonderful memories.

Thanks Gerrin! What a great watch - I've seen Withe score that goal countless times and yet I still got a little wet-eyed.
Jimmy Rimmer - wow! he still seems haunted by having had to come off.

I'm honoured to have lived my formative years during Villa's greatest successes, from 1970 through to 1982. At the time I assumed that the 1981-83 period was just the start of a golden age of continued success: I now know, of course, that I was privileged to be in the flower of my youth during Villa's greatest moments. I would still die happy tomorrow with that knowledge ... but I do yearn to see another golden age.

Were there any performances in the league in 81/82 that gave any hope we could actually do it in Europe or were we generally quite flat?

There were a lot of injuries, the obvious upheavals which we didn't know about at the time and looking back I wonder if Ron Saunders in achieving his ambition may have lost a bit of his drive.

It was a very strange season. The optimism of a repeat of the previous year went very quickly, losing 3-0 to newly promoted Notts County in the first game. Injuries left the team disjointed - whisper it but imo if we'd had a couple of key injuries in the previous season we wouldn't have got anywhere near winning the league, the squad wasn't that great. If we hadn't won the European Cup the season would have been a disaster. Standing on the Holte a few months after winning the league with 15 odd thousand in the ground just after Saunders had left was very strange. Then Saunders joined Blues, he became the hate figure for a while and Barton (who came from nowhere, MacLaren was the assistant we all knew) took us to Rotterdam.

It does appear to be in-house, but that does not detract from the quality. Obviously repeats a lot of the Super Villans documentary given it is the same people discussing the same events, but it is a good watch nonetheless.

Loved SV. These players were so good on and off the pitch.

Some minor quibbles:

1. Great play was made of Jimmy's penalty-rebound save in Berlin. His save against Anderlecht in the SF was far better.

2. His fine save in the home tie against Dynamo was very important, but why didn't they show footage of the many near-misses we had in the first-half, where it was almost impossible to believe we didn't score?

3. Didn't think too much of the cartoon images.

Watching Jimmy shedding tears, even now is heart rending.

Great stuff. Had a lovely night with him & the London Lions back in 2018.
I just watched the rest of the BT doc.
Sitting hear very moist eyed.
Thanks again to the one that made it accessible to me, the documentary that is. Much appreciated Gerrin.

That makes me think of how my Dad and how he did that for everything, to have had ST for these years, to have been at all the big occasions. The tear gassing of families in Paris yesterday etc, it reminds me of how unexpected that sort of thing is now, and in a way how known a thing it was back then. I remember being terrified getting knocked off sitting on a crash barrier in the Clock End, but beyond that I can't remember us having too many problems. Thank goodness my Dad did a bit of positive risk taking as it'd be seen then and took me along. Life is chaos with little kids etc, but all being well we'll be off to the childhood haunt of Pembrokeshire with my old folks in 5 weeks. I think I need to ensure I get chance for some proper reminiscing with my Dad one evening, maybe watching again.

Back then the fans were a little more aggressive, in my opinion, weren't they?

Today, football crowds are not as heavily controlled, but the responsibility has been placed on the clubs.

When we disembarked in Ostend in 1982, we were shunted in a long column through a series of corridors that to my knowledge wasn't the main ferry terminal until we reached the coaches to take us to Rotterdam lined up dockside.

These corridors, from memory, had a couple of double swing doors in them.  At each point there was two Belgian coppers, one was a dog handler and the other had a sub-machine gun which he had no problem pointing at us and no doubt been equally as happy to use on us had he felt the need arise.  Scary.  Anyone else remember that?
