Title: Gordon Lee RIP
Post by: Villa Lew on March 08, 2022, 11:51:00 AM
Gordon Lee has died aged 87, played 142 games for us 1958-66, initially a left back then moved to right back, when Charlie Aitken came into the team. He was manager of Everton, when we beat them after 2 replays to win the 1977 League Cup.

I remember him particularly as Everton's manager when we beat them in the 1977 League Cup Final but I never saw him play as he left Villa the year before I first attended Villa Park.

RIP Gordon.

That's my main memory of him. He was mentioned on here a while back, thought he'd already passed away tbh.

I had to look him up as I'd completely forgotten about him.  Seen his photo and 1977 came flooding back. I never new he played for us until now.

Steve Stride said in his book that he and Doug interviewed Gordon Lee for the Villa job after the sacking of Tony Barton and they both agreed he was very dour and lacking personality. In fact they agreed he was his as dull as ditch water and nearly bored them to death in the interview so they reckoned he would have bored the players
too. So instead they went for that all singing and dancing happy go lucky wonderful character and personality that was Graham Turner.

I well remember watching Gordon Lee playing regularly for us.  A decent full back and a difficult opponent as a manager starting out with Port Vale when we were in the third division.  RIP.

Same here. Only discovered today he was in our 1961 League Cup winning team.

RIP Gordon.

Left us as a player just before I started going.

I remember him as manager for Port Vale when we were in the 3rd division which included a 4-4 draw at Vale Park. Later he sold Sammy Morgan to us.

Those first two Everton games in 1977 were very dull. "Pass the ball back, pass the ball back, pass the ball back Everton".
He certainly had a reputation for building teams with a somewhat utilitarian approach. "People keep on about stars and flair. As far as I'm concerned you find stars in the sky and flair at the bottom of your trousers."

His finest and final act in management was as caretaker boss of Leicester City in season 1990-91. A 1-0 win against Oxford at Filbert Street on the final day kept them up and sent West Brom down to division 3.

RIP.

Did a very good job at a number of clubs.

A shame he never got a chance with us as a Villa man.
