Title: Drinking around VP
Post by: Chipsticks on March 06, 2022, 08:17:23 PM
Where do H&Vers prefer to drink before (or after) a game at VP?

Personally always go to the Aston Tavern, which is far from perfect but does have a charm to it. I'm curious if the Social is any good, or if I'm missing anything better?

I drink in the Villa Tavern but it's my local anyway. Gets very rammed on matchday but with the better weather coming the outdoor area will be open. Had some cracking nights in there after a Villa game. Last night was great

in The Barton's these days as all my previous matchay pubs have closed down. Love the Bartons but getting an uber from Aston Station is a pain.

Is our regular before the game but getting served is now becoming a joke.
After a 25 minute wait on Saturday we went to the ground and took in the live entertainment and a pint there instead.

Social was good until they sacked Jenny. The new manager Karen hasn’t a scooby

Spoons at One Stop fits the bill these days since the Holte Suite lost its appeal.

I work in Walsall so actually get the bus/train in to there for some midweek games. Usually quite busy and a good atmosphere and think season ticket holders can get % off meals. If trains are running on time it's also feasible to get one at 7.45pm and still make kick off if it's 8pm start.

Interested to know why u think the Holte Suite has lost it's appeal. I had an incident in there on saturday with one of doorman which was quite frankly embarrassing.

I stopped going in there as well. The beer is awful and flat as a pancake in plastic glasses, and the queues horrendous.
What happened with the doorman?

Nothing major but caused me some embarrassment, i'm somewhat disabled, struggle on my feet walk with stick and i have a Personal Assistant, generally my son
who comes with me. Saturday couldn't till later so on those occasions i get there at noon when bar empty and i can get two pints in without too much trouble.
A number of the doormen know me and are brilliant so on the occasions my lad late they ring me to tell me they're outside and the dooren on the exit door let him in.
No worries....some may say that's wrong he should wait in queue whatever......anyway same process happening until the 'senior' doorman got involved and stopped lad
coming in. Not really a problem but he started to have a go at me, took him back to my table where i showed him my ST, and he saw my pint and then made sarky comments about me not being disabled enough to get up bar......whereupon a guy with his grandson stood up and told him that he had fetched my pint for me....words continued to be exchanged, just got quite unsavoury and embarrassing....he's off my christmas card list put it that way.

When las got in he fortunately went straight to bar....that was the happy ending...LOL

Barton’s for me but getting served is becoming an issue.

I've walked out more times than I care to remember having waited for 30 minutes and not been served.

Don't generally drunk before the match, but Bartons afterwards.

PGW, I would report that Bouncer to the club, disgraceful behaviour.

Beer in Holte Suite generally quite iffy coupled with a paucity of atmosphere.

We used to go in the Holte Suite quite a bit but we've only been in there once this season. It took an absolute age to get served and it's got even more pricey than it was. The 1874 lounge is much better but they are are charging £50 a season which sounds a lot but you get served quicker and it's not so rammed. Its upstairs though and I don't think there's a lift. I may be wrong though.

Out of interest, is the bar in the old Stumps still open match days?

The social was good until the clowns that used to drink in the Adventures started drinking in there.

When me and Mac started going in there you'd get about a dozen customers in after the match

I remember going in there after a game when a few of us met up after the last game of the season under MoN, even parked in the road behind the pub it was so quiet.

The beer is shocking.

If its a beer in town before the game we go for The Wellington, The Queens Arms, OC's or The Wolf. Also tried The Roebuck Church Street on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised, nice place, nice beer.

Villa Tavern after the game. Fast service, decent music and great atmosphere among the punters.

We used the Tavern for years and it was lovely, the bloke that run it was the nephew of my parents neighbours, they were lovely people.
They got forced out and some right dodgy fuckers came in, St George's Cross went up behind the bar and it turned into the boozer off Shameless.

Might give it a go again if it's improved, the Bartons is getting ridiculous, even having a table booked is no guarantee of service.

No its been poor the social since regulars have stopped drinking in there for a number of reasons.

the place to be right now appears to be the sacred  heart haven't been in there this season.

As for the Holte Suite agree about the queues and door staff  - needs reviewing by the club

Go with my teenage/pre teen kids, so generally just get a couple of shite pints in the ground/holte suite before the game. After, if i go anywhere its the Heart, gets packed, but bar staff are fairly quick and good atmosphere in there.
