Title: Bradford away 1987
Post by: Nev on December 27, 2021, 01:37:53 PM
Driving home from work I happened upon a great interview with Gary Thompson on WM about the above game and that season in general.

I can remember that game in fine detail as if it was yesterday and the memories invoked by Thompson were wonderful and I must admit had me wiping away the odd tear particularly on hearing Sir Graham.

For those of us who still class this amongst the best of times watching Villa I highly recommend it. Should be available on listen again on BBC Sounds. It was on between 4.30 and 5pm.

My two main recollections of that game are not being able to see the goal nearest us all match and Steve Sims’ inexplicable handball.

Good day out, an interesting walk back to the train station afterwards and why were villa fans lighting their cigarette lighters???

I hope it’s not for the reason I think it is!

Sadly, I can't think of any other reason.

Dave, the penny dropped just after my previous post. I was hoping that I was wrong and it was something else.

It's hard to believe people (esp. Villa fans) can behave like this.

Great banter from the lads mocking a disaster. Seems there have always been tossers within our away support.

Signing those 2 Grays made a massive difference.

Even though Sims was a Taylor pick pretty sure it was Evans and Keown for most of the rest of the season.

Yes, Evans replaced Sims after Xmas.

So did Keown leave us at the end of our promotion season?

I seem to remember the following season, we signed Olmondroyd based on the 2 performances against us that season

The season after.

Fantastic day. There were many great away days that season.

No doubt you're right, as we won far more away games than home ones that season!

Wasn't it twelve in total away?

This was my first season going to the Villa and I remember the Bradford home game as a 7 year old was my 2nd ever game. Had no idea of the significance at the time but it all but sealed promotion in front of 45000. Ian Ormandroid played for Bradford then.

There was a great atmosphere at this game.

The Holte was packed that day.

Just remembered, at the start of the nineties I was in my local boozer when me and friends got chatting with some football fans who ahd dropped in for a pint.

Turned out they were Bradford City fans. I recalled the Easter '88 game and he said, "As soon as I saw a packed Holte End across from our seating, I knew we were beaten."
