I was asked by a mate of mine to compile a list of our top 10 goals since 2000 in terms of not just quality but significance too. It was for the Birmingham World website. It was harder then I thought it would be. You can find it here https://www.birminghamworld.uk/sport/football/top-ten-aston-villa-goals-this-century-3505811.
Do you agree? Any I’ve missed out?

Bit heavy on the promotion season perhaps.
Few candidates:
Delph, Young and Trez winners in our other semi final successes this century.
Young at Goodison in injury time.
Weimann at Anfield (after Benteke backheel)
Gabby winners at the Agbonlahor end at the Sty.
-
The obvious ones are missing
Grealish at Bloooose
The two play off final goals
Tammy pen at Albion
hutton v blooose
-
Grealish at Rotherham has to feature surely?
-
Yes, that was a wonderful team goal, along with Grealish's superb skill. Great reverse ball from Elmo, too.
-
A mention for El Ghazi's goal against Everton, first season back. Not because it was especially brilliant, but it capped our first win, and Villa Park erupted in a way I hadn't heard for a very, very long time. The atmosphere at the end was a bit special.
-

This.
-
An additional contender, Grealish's late winner at home to Wigan when Bruce was our manager.
Got to say that his volley against Derby following the corner kick cross to the edge of the box was a world class execution of abiity.
-
Grealish at Rotherham has to feature surely?
It did in my list
-
In no particular order and with my memory being blurry
Grealish last minute vrs Cardiff
Grealish vrs Derby
Grealish vrs Rotherham away
Grealish vrs blues away (not a great goal but after being lamped it was poetic)
Hutton vrs blues
Hourihane vrs Blues
Hourihane vrs WBA (play off semi 1st leg)
Lowton vrs Stoke
Mcginn crs Sheff Wed
Merson vrs Cov.
Merson vrs Everton away
Cahill vrs Blues
Loads from the mid 2000s and the MON years i just cant remember now sadly
-
There should be one Thomas Hitztlsperger's long range strikes in one of these lists. Maybe the one at Portsmouth.

His goal against Blues was a great strike but overshadowed by us chucking away the lead.
Late winner at Bolton was a classic.

Petrov v Derby?
Grealish v Rotherham is my favourite - but not sure why

Hitz only scored 12 for us!
-
Petrov v Derby?

Context in the game/season. Really felt we'd chucked it away at half time but turned around to be a great night and another step on our inexorable march to promotion.

Yes your probably right - I think it was also the goal that made me decide that Grealish was the real deal

I went to Sheff Wed away a few days earlier, which was a brilliant smash and grab. Turning it around against Rotherham felt for the first time that we might be going up.
-
Weimann away at Liverpool. Good one-two with Benteke.
McGinn against Sheffield Wednesday.
-
If I'm going to be picky, I think you've over-egged where we were at at the time with McGinn's goal against Wednesday, Dave. We were still very much spluttering along under Bruce, and it counted for bugger-all in a game we deservedly lost.
It still makes my list, though. A wonderful strike of which I had a fantastic side-on view from the back row of L9. If I close my eyes, I can still hear the crack off the bar.

Hitz only scored 12 for us!
Only one of which was in the area (and still probably travelled about twenty yards).
-
Nilis v Chelsea should be on there given we lost him a few weeks later.
Was right behind that volley in the Holte that day.
-
It was a wonderful goal!
What happened to Luc was an absolute tragedy.

Bit of an aside but it's frustrating we don't bring back more players and interview them on the pitch at half time, it was brilliant a few years back when Laursen and Angel came onto the pitch and got a brilliant ovation.
I read an interview with Nilis a few years ago and he said he'd love to come back to VP but has never been asked so seems an easy thing for comms department to do. Might even ease the congestion in the
concourses.
Anyway one of the what if Villa careers in last 25 years given how he started as he hit a fantastic goal in one of the Interoto matches that summer. Him and Merson would've been very enjoyable together given how Merse was playing in that time.
-
I agree.
I don't know how many would want to come back and talk to the fans but it would be good to see this done as a feature through the season.
Luc did have a few words to the fans in 2001 against Leeds, when it was clear that he would never be able to play again.
-
Final words on Luc, who was a superb technician. he would have made as many goals as he scored. He used to put them on a plate for Van Nistelrooy at Anderlecht(?).
To make it even better, he was a Bosman, so cost us nothing. Arsenal wanted him too, but he didn't think he'd get the games there with Dennis B being top of the pile.
Such a shame!

Merson was in great form that season so we'd have been decent to watch given how boring 00-01 generally was.
Said before I can barely remember anything of that season between Nilis wonder goal and relegating Coventry but didn't Merse score from about 40 yards last minute v Everton that year?

Yes. I was there. Awful game but great finish.
-
As strikes go Alan Wright at WHL is up there.
Goal of the month x 3 in the same game.
-
Already mentioned earlier but Lowtons goal at Stoke for the quality of the goal and the importance of the match has to be in there
