Title: Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa pre match thread
Post by: Smirker on November 22, 2021, 03:31:37 PM
Saturday 27th November, 3pm kick off.

Win here would be massive and would show maybe we have turned a corner after the horrendous run.

Tough games coming up so this is massive.

Don't know how to add a poll but I think this will be a narrow loss, sorry.

This is an early start for a pre-match thread but happy to run with it.

Vieira has got Palace playing for sure so this will be tough.

They've done us at their place both games since we came up when they weren't as impressive as they look now.

My head says a narrow defeat but let's go with the Gerard effect continuing following a full week of training with the boys.

1-1

We don't do draws and Palace only do draws ... something's got to give.

A draw it is.

They’ve only lost two games, one of which was Chelsea away first game of the season, the other Liverpool  away, so their no mugs. Saying that they’ve also drawn at home to Brighton and Newcastle fairly recently.
It would be no surprise  if we lost this with Benteke scoring, i would be pleased with a draw. But Palace arent going to finish top 10 imo, so they will lose more games along the way. So why not here.
1-0 Villa, Watkins.

1-0 Villa, Watkins.

Agree with much of that, think Stévie G will keep it tight and then Bailey to get a late winner on a counter attack. Zaha getting sent off for shithousery would be a bonus.

Nah, we'll be fine. It's those centre-forwards looking for a goal after 22 barren months that normally give us bother. That said, him vs Mings could be a proper tussle.

And I'll go for our bloke to come out on top. A repeat of the Brighton score, two-none us. Watkins and Ramsey, would've been three but unbelievably El Ghazi misses a penalty!

Tricky one to call. We're awful there since Benteke scored that goal out of nowhere on a bastard cold winter's night under Lambert. He's finally beginning to show something like that kind of form again but for them now.

Can we just settle it in a managers duel - who was the better player, Paddy or Steven ?

They're a good team currently. Even a point at Burnley isn't too bad as we found out last season.

Would gladly take a point from this to keep building momentum.

A hard fought 1-1 with late equaliser from Ings (off the bench).

We are eternally rubbish at Selhurst Park (probably got worse record there in last 15 years than Old Trafford!) so a point there even when we're in good form is pretty decent.

I genuinely can't remember many wins there at all down the years, was worse in 90s when we had to play them and Wimbledon in some prem seasons. Think a win there v Wimbledon in 96/97 and that Benteke goal game is all I can remember although of course we haven't played there every season since.

We also only scraped a late draw in Fa cup 2010 when we were top 6 and they were mid table championship side.

Mings will get sent off for decking Zaha, who will score 2.

Ings will then come on to replace Watkins who has single-handedly knackered their whole defence. He'll scroe a hat-trick, and Targett will leave one on Zaha, fairly and he'll have to go off injured. We will then bring on Archer and Chukwuemeka and score another 2.

2-5

Question is, will our Friend be the ref there again? I haven't forgotten the disallowed last minute goal we should have been given a couple of years ago to help keep us up, which would have stopped the eventual Sheffield United goal line technology hullabaloo in its tracks.

Fancy a 2-2 draw. Ollie to score again.

Dreadful place to get to and experience, along with our awful record making this the most unappealing of fixtures. A draw is the most likely I feel, hopefully the manager will have had enough time to make an impact including making a positive decision on the Ings/Watkins conundrum.
From a positive point of view records are there to be broken, sequences upset and conventional wisdom turned upside down so I'll stick my neck out and go for a tight, bruising, yellow card strewn victory.

0-1

I was there for that one but in the home end, Palace supporting mate had a spare ticket.

Will be there Sat, a Bournemouth Lion season ticket holder who sadly cannot go because of the virus has sold me his ticket.

1-0 Villa, Watkins 74 mins. On the break after Palace press and carry the game but our defence hold firm...

we're always shit away at Palace and Benteke is in form.

We have not done well at Selhurst Park over the years whether it has been playing away to Palace, Charlton or Wimbledon. My worst visit there was on Easter Monday 1987 when we lost 3-0 to Charlton and were practically relegated that day. I think the crowd was somewhere between 5,000-6,000. I also remember Garry Thompson scoring a winner against us around 1990 when we were still in the title race. We also went out of the FA Cup on penalties to Wimbledon in a midweek game with Vinnie Jones giving it the big 'un. I must admit I had some malicious intent for a moment or two when I walked past his sponsored car in the car park on the way out.
The only visit I remember to Selhurst Park that has good memories is the Dalian game.

Fair play to Viera he seems to be getting a tune out of a fairly limited Palace side so far. They looked like relegation fodder to me this season after losing a number of players and having to rebuild pretty much from scratch.

Yeah it’s an awful away game historically for me as well. Took a few soakings when it was an open end. Seen us lose to Wimbledon and Charlton as well as Palace. I can think of a couple wins. Bentekre won a game for us there and the Dalian goal game of course. There must be others that I’ve forgotten but I reckon I must be up to a dozen defeats at least. The Greedish, now obvious, dive  game, followed by the aggressive stewarding was the last one. And of course it’s a pain to get to, park and drink at. Quite like their ultra thing they have going and respect for that Newcastle banner.

We were just walking up the steps after a nightmare journey when Thompson scored, and the way back wasn't any better.

I've not been back since, even when I used to travel a lot Palace was never considered.

I used to teach in Croydon and before Saturday's match I'm meeting a couple of Palace fans I taught in the 1980s when they were teenagers. They're now in their 50s, one a headmaster. Fortunately, in those days Villa used to beat Palace fairly comfortably, so I wasn't greeted by smug grins on a Monday morning. I hope you won't be!

Not sure if this has already been commented upon (so apologies if so) but our referee on Saturday is Michael Salisbury who is doing his first ever PL game after one season in the championship. Even the Premier League appointments website has spelt his surname incorrectly. He was described as producing one of the most inept displays ever seen by an elite official after the West Brom v Fulham game and in his first 7 games this season had shown 5 reds and 20 yellows. Perfect.

Friend still hasn't reffed us in a competitive game since that Palace game.

That's quite a punishment. Unless we've asked for him specifically not to ref our games.

Having said that at least he wasn't telling Watford players he wanted an assist for letting play continue for their first goal in the opening game of the season...

Mike Dean. A character he is.

It was 2014. Previous victory to that was 1980 with Gary Shaw scoring the only goal.

They don't like Danny Ings playing against them.
5 goals in 7 games, including 2 last time out in May.

Ref for Palacce is Lancashire referee Michael Salisbury making his Premier League debut.

In the Championship this season he's given 20 yellow cards and 5 reds in his six games.  Are those the stats you need to be promoted to the PL?  Ruin most of your 6 games and dish out cards like sweets?  No idea which of our players are walking the card tightrope (McGinn I'd guess?) but they'll need to be careful on Saturday.

Just had my palace ticket holder father in law round .  He says Palace are hopeless against set pieces and the goalie dont come for crosses , great shot stopper mind.

He said 1-1

Matty Cash to the touchline, calling Matty Cash (and his towel) to the touchline.

Perfect.

How the fcuk has he got promoted then ?

I'd still prefer him to Kevin Friend.

That’s a good spot re Friend. He’s reffed Liverpool games 8 times since that Palace game, but not once for us. I hope he never does again. C***.

Didn’t he ref our pre season friendly at Bristol City where he was getting dogs abuse and booked the away end.

He handled that quite well to be fair to him.

No way! Playing like a Rory Delap-idated team was Deano's final fatal mistake. Never again.

I think he did, but think it's almost certain, we have asked for him not to ref any of our league or cup games, as he's reffing a Prem league match usually every other weekend, plus cup games.

2-5

It'll probably be Davis, not Archer, so make that just one more.

Would really like to see what we have been missing with Sanson

It’s the story of Sansom and Delilah. His strength was in his hair, so Delilah cut it off and all his powers were gone.

They haven't won many games, but seem hard to beat. If we keep a clean sheet we should win. If we don't, then a draw would be a good compromise.

But a very strong bench

Love Ashley, but as a starter? One great assist last week doesn’t change anything. He shouldn’t be starting with the bench we have

Hopefully I will be proved wrong
