what a super opportunity for young Cam and fully deserved reward for his performance in the last round. Concerning however that no senior forwards on the bench.

Not sure why Martinez doesn’t play. He’s had one game in 14 days and a short private plane trip.

Anyway, good luck boys!

Good to see Sanson finally back in the first-pick side.
Carney and Caleb both on the bench, as is Bogarde!
Really interesting selection - fair play to Smith for giving the kids a top-flight experience.

Probably more of a case of why risk him.  Plus, Steer can try and make up for two weeks ago.

Concerning however that no senior forwards on the bench.

Agree with this and no complaints about the team but would have liked Ings or Ollie on the bench. Also surprised by how strong the Chelsea line-up and bench are.

I can only surmise that with the early game on Saturday Dean wants his senior pros resting at home. FA Cup it is this year then.

Also surprised by how strong the Chelsea line-up and bench are.

Then again, they have a second eleven most of whom would walk into all but the half dozen best teams in the world.

It would probably be difficult for them to not put out a very strong side.

Absolutely infuriating and disrespectful to the competition and the Travelling support.

This cup is probably our best chance of silverware and we throw it away. Chelsea have much bigger things to aim for and they have Lukaku on the bench and we have neither Watkins or ings.

Sorry but Aston Villa should treat this cup with more respect , 5 times winners and we put a team out like this against very strong opposition

Disgrace and I feel sorry for all those that have travelled down

This is where i am, they can bring lukaku on!! I thinkmits a big ask for Archer, from Solihull Moors to leading the line against a fairly decent chelsea defence. I get we have a lunchtime k/o on saturday, but Watkins has only played a couple of games, i would of thought he coukd of been on the bench. Lets hope for a shock or at least a real good go at them

It would probably be difficult for them to not put out a very strong side.

I get that but with their CL commitments I didn't expect Kante or James to be playing or Lukaku on the bench. Probably a bit easier for the home team when there isn't a 5-6 hour coach trip on top of the time they're at the ground.

Some perspective on the relative cost of tonight's squads. This is what they/we have paid for the players on both sides where fees have been involved

Kepa £72m
Kante £30m
Saul £4m
Chilwell £50m
Zyech - £33m
Werner - £48m
Barkley £15m
Havertz £70m
Lukaku £98m
Total £375m

Cash £14m
Hause - £3m
Sanson £15.5m
Marvelous £11m
Traore - £17m
Buendia £33m
El Ghazi £8m

Hause - £3m
Caleb - £300k
Total £96.8

Yep  they've spent 4x what we have.

That's the measure of how far we are away from being title contenders.

Sanson has started the game brilliantly. The stream I'm watching has a c**t ex-chelsea player as co-commentator who isn't even trying to be objective, pissing me off.

Andy Townsend?

A sign of how much our squad has developed.

A much changed team from the one that played at the weekend, and it still has the likes of Traore, Buendia, Sanson etc in it.

Imagine a weakened XI 5 or 6 years ago.

I'd probably be starting.

Feels a bit like the league game. We've had chances and should be leading. Archer snatched at a few and lacked composure so need these to fall to likes of Traore or Buendia second half.

They also have far more on the bench to change things compared to us so Tuchel won't take too long in the second half to do it.

Traore going to be a really good impact sub for us this season when games are level and play is stretched. He does loads of silly things at times but less time on the pitch can also mean more likely he produces match winning assist as he's certainly capable.

Another player in midfield second half, bin El Ghazi, his usual no fart no shit performance. Matty Cash, Traore and Sanson impressed, shame we had to lose the latter. That first chance for Cam, how many have we seen him put away in that position, almost his trade mark goal.

We’ve done pretty well considering the team is such a disgrace eh?

People have really said that? I mean it was never going to be full 11 but we have plenty of internationals in there. Only query is given Konsa is on the bench I'm surprised Ings or Ollie aren't there for attack.

We’ve comfortably had the two best chances. Both falling to Cam. He’s getting into great positions

Great to hear. Got no working stream so following it on here.

Probably should have scored the second one...nice turn but had a bit of time. Credit the keeper I guess, AEG was unfortunate the rebound was cleared off line by James

Very positive half all round with the exception of Sanson's injury. He looked our best player so that's a real blow for him. Traore is impressing me too, odd daft touch mixed with the odd genius one as always but looks a real threat. Set piece coach already having a positive impact.

I dont understand the logic of not having one or two senior players on the bench.  Lets be honest OT away we are likley getting nothing. I would have rather prioritised this game. Chelsea are there for the taking.

Good first half from back to front.

Sanson getting crocked is a real bummer - he looked really impressive. High work rate, plenty of challenges and great presence in the last third. We've got to get him fit.

We've looked better playing in a quick transition when we win possession on midfield instead of just hoofing it up. Cam and Anwar struggle to hold on to the ball with their back to goal.

Pity Cam didn't put one if his chances away. Third time lucky?

Mind you, they've got some serious/expensive firepower on the bench.

Konsa is there but I agree...Watkins has looked a bit rusty so far this season so definitely could or should be in the squad. To be fair to Deano and the club, there is no point courting the best young players across the divisions if you don't give them chances in the first team when they arise. Chelsea have given a few of theirs a go tonight too. Has made for a good game. Tuchel certainly is taking it seriously if his antics are anything to go by.

I wonder if it would be an effort to get the club thinking like "the Big Six" - if the big clubs play their reserves, then if we want to be perceived as a big club we should play our reserves. Also, why give Chelsea's reserves / youth the free experience of playing against experienced PL players in a match their club don't care about ?

On the other hand, I guess starting on your own up front for Villa against Chelsea is even more rare.

Best performance in ages. Bonus territory here really. Would be epic to beat these after they bringing on likes of Mount and Lukaku while we brought on kids. Created plenty of chances throughout and hopefully lots of pressure on the league team regulars. Thought our CBs were excellent when Lukaku came on, Hause particularly.

We were excellent, other than the first 10-15 minutes of the 2nd half we've been the better team and had the better chances.

All of the back 4 and Nakamba have been superb.

brilliant spells from Sanson, chuk, traore and Cam

Yes because he snatched at a few chances 1st half. Then scored a very good goal so just surprised he didn't take a pen instead of Nakamba given his confidence would've been right up, that's all.

Good performance against some good players. I can see why Dean didn't put any of the young players in the 5, it will be water off Ashley Youngs back but might have weighed a bit heavier on Archer if he'd missed.

Shame as it leaves fewer opportunities for some of these players to get games this season, but when the draw was made I thought wed most likely go out so I'm not too devastated.

We need to remember that if we want to hoover up all these fantastic kids we've got to reward them with first team football. It's all well and good training with the first team squad every day, even making the bench but nothing comes close to running out with the first team on a match day.

Dean may have weaknesses but bringing through the kids ain't one. It's just a shame their cup run has come to an end but the experience will have done them the world of good.

Proud of them, we have some seriously good youth players - and our squad players are looking good too.  So far this season I think we have looked really good considering all that happened.

Penalties today probably summed it up - with a bit more luck and composer, this would have been a very good start to the season.

2 years ago - if you said we would have taken a strong Chealsea team to penalties, with 100m+ of talent injured or rested I would have laughed at you.

Think they are all doing us proud.  Only thing I am slightly nervous about is Emi10 - think he looks a good player, just not sure he's record signing good.  Think some of that may be fitness and not getting a run in the team though.

And - although Steer dived while the penalty taker was still putting the ball down, he's still probably made the most important penalty save in the last 10 years.

Proud of the team that played tonight however with a slightly different selection we would have won this in the 90 minutes. And surely Cash or Archer would have been a better choice than Nakamba.

The 90 min cup ties + penos are great.

Respectively disagree. Great is Brian Little destroying QPR in a 3rd semi final at Highbury. Great is winning the cup at Old Trafford in a 2nd replay with a Chris Nicholl screamer and more Little magic. None of these would ever have happened with the present system.

I'll go with ratings

Steer 7 - some fine saves, never lets us down
Cash 8 - I've been critical of him in the past but he was brilliant tonight and great assist
Tuanzebe 7 - lost Tuchel a bit for the goal but that aside was very good, he's a fine defender
Hause 8 - A warrior, especially when Lukaku came on
Young 6 - lots of critical comments on match thread but I thought he did well v CHO. Not great with the ball though.
Nakamba 8 - excellent performance, surprising me of late
Sanson 7/Chucky 6 - Sanson was very impressive before injury, Chucky took a while to settle but made a few nice runs
Buendia 6 - did ok, missed a big chance but grafted hard. Bit of work to make our first X1
Traore 7 - fitness coming along nicely, surprised to see him come off to be honest so hope not injury related
AEG 7 - poor in first half bit seemed to grow a pair at half time and battled far harder in second half. Always gets into good positions, decent chance missed
Archer 8 - missed two big chances but a truly brilliant header. Good movement throughout

Deano 8 - ballsy selection but fully vindicated. Seeing Tuchel throw on likes of Lukaku and Mount while we brought on kids was brilliant.

Play a proper keeper and have better players on bench we go through. Blame at managers door

Chelsea had lukaku on bench we didn't take ings or Watkins

Disgrace

In my opinion, you're the disgrace.

Fine, battling performance, and a little unlucky not to have gone through. Several huge pluses tonight....

For me it is Steer that is the player most in risk of his place in the squad.  I thought Tuanzebe and Hause looked pretty solid for a new pairing against Werner, Lukaku (less so), Mount et al. A shame to lose Sanson when he was looking very comfortable and assured early in the first half.

14th May 2019

Villa 4-3 Baggies penalty shoot out.

Steer is a proper keeper and a good one as well.

Proud of the team that played tonight however with a slightly different selection we would have won this in the 90 minutes. And surely Cash or Archer would have been a better choice than Nakamba.
Apparently Cash is fuming, He aint having no one say he wouldn't take a peno, when he offered to.

Just wait til you hear what he has to say about Ashley Preece

Unfortunately, Dean chose not to let him take one as he was subbed at 77 mins

The 90 min cup ties + penos are great.

Respectively disagree. Great is Brian Little destroying QPR in a 3rd semi final at Highbury. Great is winning the cup at Old Trafford in a 2nd replay with a Chris Nicholl screamer and more Little magic. None of these would ever have happened with the present system.

I never said that!
