Title: Aston Villa v Everton Pre Match thread
Post by: olaftab on September 16, 2021, 10:57:03 AM
Saturday 18 September KO 5.30PM
Villa Park

So the next episode of the most played top flight fixture between two of the greatest ever English football clubs is here.  This is going to be a good game as it always is when Everton come to Aston. Let's hope Raffa gets it wrong somewhere.

Big game in the context of early results, although perhaps not in the context of the season as a whole. Hopefully the manager will be able to pick his strongest team which will give us a window into what's to come, I also expect the formation to revert to standard.

Everton have had a very good start but we should measuring ourselves against this sort of opposition to judge our progress rather than teams that buy 100 million pound strikers.

I expect a victory, but not a straightforward onr and it will be very tight.

2-1

Notwithstanding the Chelsea perforemance I hope we move back to 4-3-3.  But I'm convinced Smith will want to play two up front.

My line up would be:

Cash   Konsa   Mings   Targett

  McGinn    Luiz     Ramsey

 Buendi    Watkins    Bailey

If Buendia is not fit to start after his travels then I'd go with Traore.

That's what I'd go with, though I'd be tempted to pick a goalkeeper. 🙂

2-1 Villa - Watkins (2)

Probably won't need one with the amount of goals that teams gonna score

For me, the reason our midfield three looked so good last weekend (first half especially) was because they had the extra centre back behind them. This freed Ramsey and McGinn up to bomb on and press high

If we go back to a back four i'm not sure that will work

I'm all in favour of leaving it as it was last weekend, and if any changes have to be made i'd probably drop Ings and throw in either Bailey on Buendia as a floating option alongside Watkins

We’ll win this. Everton we’re very poor up to the point Townsend scored that wonder goal and as we’re better than Burnley I think we’ll over power them.

4-3-3 for me. A proper one, not that 4-2-3-1 muck:

Martinez (if back in time)
Cash Konsa Mings Targett
McGinn Ramsey Luiz
Traore Watkins Bailey

Get at them from the off, and go in 2-0 up.

I think we will stick with 3-5-2, only change I would make would be Bailey for Ings.

I think this is a much bigger game than we think for the season, and for Smith. Lose this one, we have 4 points going into United and Spurs away, and Chelsea in the league cup. Confidence, and league position going into the international break could be a similar level, with a very decent looking Wolves coming first up after it. Need to win this. I have gone for draw.

Can't see him playing 3-5-2 too be honest. think he did that mainly to counteract Lukaku and their wingback threats. As Calvet-Lewin is out for them, he will revert to a back four, two holding, pace out wide and, I presume Buendia as the playmaker. So

Martinez
Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett
McGinn, Buendia, Luiz
Bailey, Ings, Watkins

They are unbeaten this season and sitting pretty on 10 points.
With the run of games coming up we really have to be winning this but it’s a tough one.

1-1 and pressure starting to build up on Dean.

It is. But only has himself to blame. 1 point vs brentford and watford is poor

Likely Everton will switch to a back 4. They were transformed once Benitez made that switch v Brighton. Really good test for us. Big decision is whether to start Ings or not. Loads of options for Smith.

We've generally matched up well v them since promotion.

I think that will continue on Saturday. 2-1 win, Ollie and Bailey.

My thinking too. Whilst we might not be all that yet, neither are they. Tight contest with not much in it, but us to win. I'll go 2-0, Bailey and Watkins, plus a nice cameo from Traore that sends us all home smiling. And fancy myself to be on the end of one of many no-nonsense Mings clearances.

2-1 win. One down early doors, cue much disquiet and arm folding and people predicting Deano out before the clocks go back. Ings and AEG on after 70 mins. Ings with the equaliser on 75 mins AEG with the winner 90+3. Cue Deano being hailed as a tactical genius and the next England manager. Fickle? Us?

It certainly is and hopefully this is addressed Saturday but I won't get my hopes up.
With the Holte Suite being used as a Vaccination Hub the lower Holte End is unbearable and must be a joy for the Virus. Using CANNED Lager which then has to be transferred to a plastic cup takes a couple of minutes to process this all adds up and enhances the problem.

15 seats free in the whole ground.

Also - once a game is sold out, that triggers ST holders' ability to sell their seat for the game, which is probably where those 15 seats are from.

I think this will be another disappointing game for us Villa fans - side is still not settled, more changes tomorrow, they have certainly started well, and I worry if we don’t score early could be a long night.

That said, looking at the table it’s already clear there is a lot of dross in this league and still convinced we will end the season a lot better than we started.

The key to a good result tomorrow is stopping Gray and Townsend. I don’t particularly rate either but they have both had a good start to the season so far, and possibly have a point to prove. Keep them both in check and we should get a positive result.

I love a draw acca. I never bet on our games anymore, but a draw is a sensible prediction. Chelsea will murder Spurs though.

We have to use last weeks positive performance against Chelsea and take it to Everton
3-1

Villa to win, and Watkins to score at least one and half the team re-enact the Bebeto baby celebration in front of the Holte!  ;)

Would you really prefer us not to win tomorrow? Shut the door on your way out  >:(

On the rare occasions I bet on Villa I usually bet on us to lose. Doesn't mean I want it to happen.

I predict 17,637 empty seats around Flin5stone.

Is 17,638 the new reduced capacity at The Sty?

17,637 was the attendance when we beat Everton 6-2 on 05/11/89........
And I were one of 'em.

I hope they do. Sobering to think that the baby being celebrated is now two years older than Ollie Watkins.

Fully expecting us to win today. Everton were poor for all but 7 minutes against Burnley and it sounds like we have all the players available today who we want to be out there.

2-1 to us.

4-3-3 for me. A proper one, not that 4-2-3-1 muck:

Martinez (if back in time)
Cash Konsa Mings Targett
McGinn Ramsey Luiz
Traore Watkins Bailey

Get at them from the off, and go in 2-0 up.

This is the team i think he’ll go with. He cant afford to drop Martinez, but dont see him rewarding Buendia with a start. Would leave us with Beundia, Ings and Ek Ghazi as really strong attacking options off the bench. Floodlights will be on before the end, has the makings of a potential classic game

Worrying times. Is Dean up to the task? Are the owners really as ambitious as they say?

Bring back Lambert! We never had to worry about having four tickets left when he was in charge.

Unfortunately Barney, Betty, Wilma and Fred can't make it so have sent theirs back. Still, mustn't grumble.

Ings in for Traore for me. Regardless of who’s right or wrong on that I’m pretty sure it’ll be the case as Smith wont leave Ings out at this point. Agree with the rest of the team though.

Bailey on the right

Ings Central

Watkins left

All of them interchanging with McGinn  and Ramsey pressing high.

Should have Everton on back foot

No Targett in there?

If not, then we don't half seem to be unlucky inbetween Smith saying "everybody's OK" in his Friday press conference and then people not being available on the Saturday.

I'm afraid you'll have to, at least in a starting line up.
