Moving on now I wonder if Deano will go with rotating captains something he did at Brentford.
But essentially this poll is for choice of new Villa captain
Listed are the likely candidates/of options.
My vote is for Tyrone Mings:
Vocal organization and ability to lead he set standards on and off the pitch. Articulate and honest a modern day sports person who will also be a spokesperson off the field.
I read about a Good Captain having the 3 C's
That's Caring, Courageous, and Consistent. Mings is this personified. I very much hope he's given the role if we don't go down the shared responsibility route
Ashley Young to me is very viable down to his experience and being a very very vocal player and encouraging attitude with team mates on the pitch. And a big voice in the dressing room. I consider him more than when Youngy was here previously. I think being for long term though its Mings.
Cast your votes.

Mings for me.
-
Mings for me also.
-
100% Mings
-
Has ti be mings with mcginn as vice captain
-
Mings, great leader, great shouter, great pointer and a great humble man
-
Mings, without a doubt. On and off the pitch he was already more of a captain than that other bloke.

Mings has always been the captain, to me. He's the real leader of the team. The armband is just something that can be handed out to appease the vain.

Has to be Mings.
McGinn vice captain.

This. Close the thread!

Mings has the leadership skills, the character and the intelligence.

I was intrigued by Dean Smith rotating captains idea he used at Brentford.
I feel JT probably challenged that when he suggested doing that at the time at Villa.
Deano liked a team of skippers which he rotated each week-rather than one.
When Dean Smith signed to become Villa boss said :“I was captain at every club I played for. I didn’t start at each team as a captain, I grew into the role But I wasn’t any different as a captain than when I first went into the team.
So it got me thinking, as a manager you go through your captain all the time — but by doing that you’re missing other people who could have leadership qualities.
The modern world is more about collective leadership and leadership groups.Look at rugby. They take a lot of collective responsibility — the forward pack, the backs, the lineouts, the calls. I want everybody involved, otherwise you’re just creating followers rather than leaders.”
On Brentford he said
"The ones who had been captain enjoyed the responsibility.
It got them talking more about leadership and what it means to them and what responsibilities they must take on board."
For me I think it's still something that could be explored here at Villa given the captain vacancy
-
I wouldn't be averse to having Mings as team captain and Young as club captain. Young won't be a regular starter but could be a great mentor for some of the younger players on the fringe of the first team.
-
Mings with SJM and Emi the First as vice-captains
-
Hourihane is a proper captain too just maybe not here.
-
Reading around the messaging board some people have intimated that they favour John McGinn for captain.
I have seen he has captained Scotland national team on occasions.
However I feel Mings is a natural for this.
The rotating captains would allow for more shared responsibility around the team regard labelled leadership
Taylor Heaton Grealish Elmo and maybe Hourihane all of the more wise and experienced have left us.
Young and Ings have come in so that gives us leaders as well as quality
-
I love McGinn, but definitely Mings for me. He is everything you could want from a captain.
-
I sense that Footy is relishing this.
It's called schadenfreude.
-
McGinn is not guaranteed a starting place for me. Too inconsistent, although I love his energy and unseen work. I like to see someone who talks a lot and organises the team and players around him.
-
I was thinking this would be comprehensive when I voted. Probably not 47 votes to Mings and 1 to everyone else comprehensive, but there you are Deano.
-
Also McGinn is still fool hardy when it comes to tackling and getting cautioned.
Liability in that sense. And agree he's one for rotating.
Mings is a main stay
-

He's been our leader for three years. Jack's a great player, a talisman, but he's not a captain, in my book. Tyrone is a brilliant defender, a natural leader, and a gentleman, who stands out for his intelligence. He's my favourite player, and has been since we first took him on loan.
-
Kings is the natural choice, however Konsa would be my deputy for sure.
-
Not even a debate for me. Tyrone Mings is all you could ever want in a captain.
-

Oi! You stole that from me!
-
Mings romping home with North Korean level results here
-
Thinking about it Mings is going to be leader like anyway. Giving it someone else might give someone a shot I'm the arm. SJM maybe?
-
I went for Douglas Luiz.
I didnt mean to, I just wanted to see how many votes he'd got and then seemed to cast one for him by mistake. But it might do him good to get a bit of added responsibility?
-
Tyrone of course but Emi standing with him if the skin and hair start flying.
-

Great to see the humour around these parts on a somewhat bleak day. Good one!
-

Not intentionally, honest guv! I was trying to avoid requouting myself in whichever thread we were discussing this in earlier when I was avoiding work.

I forgive you. I was avoiding work as well, and Tyrone is a giant among men.
-
What if we had a club captain and also a match captain. Mings could be the club captain but the match captain could be rotated.
-
Got to be Tyrone
-
Tyrone is a "senior" pro in the club, an International player, a very intelligent, thoughtful person and prepared to speak his mind with sound judgement and justification. A natural leader, he gets my vote, 100%.
-
Tyrone no shadow of a doubt. IMO he should have already been captain. A proper leader on and off the pitch.
-

Effectively Mings already was the captain. Grealish was never the leader on the pitch
-
Tyrone 100% can't see how they can pick anybody else.
-
Mings.
-
Big Ty has to be captain, with McGinn as vice captain.
-
Cant wait to see mings rough up grealish on the pitch
-
I’d fancy Emiliano Martinez as captain and Mings as vice captain.
-
Don't like goalies as captain.
-
Nothing changes only now Tyrone wears an armband.
Ings as VC.
-
I’d fancy Emiliano Martinez as captain and Mings as vice captain.
This for me but Emi or Tyrone is fine.
-
Don't like goalies as captain.
Worked out alright for Italy in 1982.
-
Mings for certain. On and off field leader.
The others will all play their part in supporting him as senior players.
-
Ings has a touch of class about him as does Young and they will be a great benefit on our assault on the league and cups.
-
Don't like goalies as captain.

I knew Buffon had been around for a while but I didn't think he'd started that early!
-
Of the players currently on the books I'd go with Martinez, prefer Midfielders as Captains but not sure any we have currently have the right leadership qualities. If we sign Ward Prowse I'd make him captain.
-

Dino Zoff

Too early for me, although I do hear a rather fantastic club won the European Cup that year.

Not him as well?! I can’t cope with losing the manager this close to the season. It’s like 2010 all over again.

Until City use another clause and buy him as well, or is that clause no longer valid?
-
Not really doubt that it'll be Mings. Let's face it, he's done the job for the last 2 and half seasons anyway.

Definitely. The guy looked like England's natural leader in the games he played. He's definitely ours.
-
Mings is such a good talker and organiser. The only way I can see it being someone else is that we offer the captaincy to an incoming player as a sweetener. Can't see it happening though. Senior player, regular England international, great ambassador for the club and everything to do with the Black Lives Matter movement, for which I am really proud of him for speaking out.

Agreed, Steve. As important as Jack has been to us, I feel like Tyrone has been just as influential. Think I said this a few posts ago, but he's my favourite player, in a squad with a lot of likeable characters. What a wonderful change from 2015-odd, when everyone in our team looked, sounded and played like a total throbber.
-
It so obviously should be Mings that I think it would be seen as a snub if it wasn't him.

I agree with this. In fairness, even putting aside his treachery, Mings is a better leader and role model than Ratboy ever was. Who would you rather your child modelled themselves on, the one who broke Covid rules and smashed his car up or the one that challenged the monkey chants playing for England and stood up to Pritti Patel?

Exactly, well put. Mings obvious choice for me.
-
Tyrone ticks all the boxes bar one and is head and shoulders the best choice. However, the box that still needs to be ticked is Steel. Does he have the flint hardness of character of a Johnny Dixon, a Vic Crowe or a Denis Mortimer? We have seen his caring side, his human side, his intelligent side. Does he have a ruthless side? We shall find out pretty soon.
-
He's a leader on and off of the field, he speaks intelligently and isn't afraid to ruffle feathers. He's a big fella and organises well. I always feel a CB is a better choice than a keeper as they are more involved in play... got to be Tyrone.
-
Definitely Mings. A leader on and off the pitch. Plus I wouldn't want to be the one to tell him if the captaincy went to anyone else ;)
-
Following up my own enquiries on who captained Vs Salernitana
Birmingham press said Konsa
"Appeared to captain the side this afternoon after taking pre-match duties with officials"
Konsa picked ahead of Mings
Now Konsa played 61minutes who took on there after.
Can anyone say who was official captains?
I wouldn't be surprised if Smith is going to do to rotation captains if he doesn't just do Mings
-
it doesn't matter who is picked as captain as Mings will still be captain.
-
Smith doesn't rotate the squad, why would he do so with the armband?
-
I feel it was now necessary to have included Ezri Konsa in the captain poll!
Sorry Ez. Overlooked by England Overlooked on the captain poll!
-
I really hope he doesn't rotate captains. It smacks of wanting to be everybody's mate, like a weak supply teacher.
-
Or it demonstrates that in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t really matter and that seeking some Bobby Moore Bryan Robson captain marvel figure, is immature Roy Race fantasy football toss.
I’d still give it Mings.
-
Can't decide between McGinn and Mings, the former has been here longer and seems a natural get it up ya lead by example in the middle of the park though for me.

If we sign a proper DM, McGinn might not be a nailed on starter though.
-
i love mcginn , talking on talksport , he just makes me smile . a naughty school boy type , but heart of gold
-
If anybody is still undecided, have a watch of the 15 minute interview with Tyrone that the club have put up on social media. I genuinly don't think Dean will have an easier decision to make while he's at the club.
-
Voting has closed. Firstly I like to thank the 223 of you that voted.
That was exciting for me even with a 90% majority cast winner it was still very interesting all the peoples views.
Result of the Poll: Tyrone Mings is the candidate of the majority to be Aston Villa captain.
We await the official confirmation of the Club announcement but I feel a lot here have made a well educated forecast.
However I'm disappointed in myself I didn't have the foresight on including Konsa. I think all my other options were very viable but when conducting a poll like this for all Konsa should have been included. It was an oversight. Konsa was given the armband last Sunday and if he is to take the roll or indeed Ashley Young (who no one has selected to vote) then however we here see opinion the coaching team and Dean know what they are doing for selecting the most suitable player to be leading out our great club.
Well done All.
Thanks once again.

It was reported Dean Smith announced captain to the players during a meal this evening.
"I know who it is in my head but I'll announce that to the players tonight at the hotel."
With Smith and coaching team at Brentford Vs Arsenal perhaps the announcement has now been made.
-
Now confirmed as Mings.
-
McGinn vice-captain
-
Right choice. I don't think he'll be caught speeding to training, or reversing pissed down a street in his slippers while or captain. Good luck Ty, let's hope he's the most successful Villa skipper for a good 25 years or so.
-
It was always going to be Mings and rightly so. I think there was a lot of overthinking going on for this this issue.
-
Brilliant news Mings confirmed then.
Well done and the wise choice.
Has it all.
-
Obvious candidate to me but McGinn Emi Konsa and Young there is ample back up
-
Without our Captain and vice captain Erzi Konsa has steeped up and captains the team Vs Brentford
