The Mirror is suggesting that there could be knighthoods if England win.
-
Which is a ridiculous, as is saying that Monday should be a bank holiday.
It's not as if it's the World Cup
-
It's bigger and will have more impact than the Olympians or cricketers that have been knighted recently.
-

Is it harder to win?
-
I wouldn't say so, on the basis that mediocre teams like Portugal and Greece have won it. Only genuinely big football nations have won the World Cup. World Cup is much harder to qualify for, too.
-
They’d no doubt turn it down, like the good Marxists they are.
-
Nightmare if that bloody Lizard Queen sneakily taps them on the shoulders with a sword while they're doing the knee 😡
-
How absurd. Southgate maybe, but not the players.
Very Small Heath in an international setting. Small time.
-
Ridiculous. Maybe, maybe... Southgate would just about merit one, but I feel sure that most of the '66 winning squad didn't get knighthoods, and the ones that did got them years later.
I find it absurd that sportspeople get them with careers ongoing. Andy Murray and Lewis Hamilton would certainly have deserved them upon retirement, but I think it cheapens them somewhat to have young, active sportspeople with the honour.

Small Heath would retire all the shirt numbers!
-
I don't think it's that absurd to be honest, didn't Paul Collingwood get an OBE for scoring eight in The Ashes? They only had to beat one team to win that...
-
Ridiculous idea.

And got mercilessly sledged by Warne as a result.
-
Can Aussies still get knighthoods? Pretty sure the Don had one but not aware of, say, Warne or Ponting getting the call?
What about other Commonwealth countries, has Usain Bolt got one yet?

Sir Don Bradman. Sir Edmund Hillary. Rolf could have been a contender.

It is for England yes.

Populist government nonsense.
-
Populist government nonsense.
One could argue that applies to the whole silly honours system, to be honest. What does an Officer of the British Empire actually do? Do they have to do a month a year service defending Rockall?

It does. But this would debase it even further.

Is the right answer.

I definitely think those Tory MPs with ridiculous knighthoods should be stuck on a horse in chain-mail and forced to do tours of Leeds city centre at kicking out time.
-
Knighthoods for all are nailed on if we win it with this populist government.
Boris is such a lucky fucker I'm almost certain it's coming home.
-
Not for me, the Super Jack chant wouldn't scan as well.
-
We're acting like a small nation and things like this are a little embarrassing. If we do win, it's long, long overdue and hopefully it will happen more frequently in future.
-

Yes true. Denmark left their sun beds and won the Euros I can not imagine a team winning the World Cup like that.

Bloody hell. Knighthoods, Bank Holidays...
Someone make it stop.
-
We’ve got a sort of holiday. We can have the day off Monday but only if we promise to come in next Saturday. I’m doing it as I’d have been in on Saturday anyway. It just won’t be overtime.

There is no bandwagon this government won't jump on...!

When was the last time a government didn't jump on a big sporting bandwagon? Maybe 2004 Olympics?

As long as it's not "Jack's".

you’d let them wear chain mail?

Sir Keir wants a national holiday if they win. Populist nonsense.
-
I'm in the fortunate position of no longer working by personal choice. Strikes me though making Monday a BH at such short notice is impractical on so many levels.

'Kin right Lizz. When I was a lefty wage slave shirker, I'd have been all over it. Now that I'm a Thatcherite, up-by-the-bootstraps entrepreneur, I say get the lazy bastards into work so that I can sell them shit before I eff off abroad!

Them's fighting words!
"Oh rock on Rockall you'll never fall for Britains greedy hands..."

I had a minor role dealing with the honours system in central government. They were handed out like lollipops as compensation for not getting promoted etc. A colleague had the MBE for working weekends. That went down well with my geriatric consultant friend!

I never thought of the different connotations............first word is definitely not Jack's

It’s a bit funny that in 2021 the awarding of Knighthoods still exists. The monarchy still clinging to whatever it can to remain relevant. I don’t have an issue of recognition, but do it much later in someone’s career. For a substantial body of work, not an isolated event, as significant as this might in a sporting context. The notion of Sir Tyrone (although he deserves it much more for his off the field work) or Sir Jack, as much as we love him, would just be daft.
-
Sir Aaron Ramsdale. 0 caps.
-

He'd be first on the list as well.
-
Super, super Sir Jack…..
He’s here, he’s there, he’s every fucking where, Sir Tyrone Mings, Sir Tyrone Mings.
Better get to work on them for the Newcastle game.
-
Doesn't really matter about the title.
We'll just Knight them anyway and fit it into the songs.
Winning is going to put something seriously special on their cv's though.
Not many players can say that they've been part of a European Championship winning team.
-
Imagine Jack with a knighthood. I can't see it being used in any other way than for his own end.....
-
The OP lost me at 'The Mirror'

Has there ever been a more empty vessel for Prime Minister, who perfectly embodies the “look at me” generation?

Someone on Twitter said he'd managed to make Number 10 look like a flat roofed pub on a Bolton council estate.

Safe to say that after calling out Patel for the hateful scumbag she is, we probably won't be seeing Sir Tyrone any time soon...

She’s probably not even that hateful herself. She just knows her voters are. Anti-racism was deemed unpopular at the start of the tournament. So she opposed it. Now racism seems a bit unpopular, she opposes that.

If you think that picture of Johnson is mind bendingly crass, wait until Mark Cavendish wins on the Champs Elysees next Sunday and the fat buffoon poses on the steps of Downing Street with a bike and his rolls of fat bursting from a Team Quickstep lycra speedsuit.

A truly nauseating prospect!!

He really does bring the office of Prime Minister into disrepute. I still haven't got over him being voted Mayor of London.
