We go again.

Reminds me, Sinisalo was being linked with moves to Celtic and Bayern yesterday. Didn't realise he was so highly rated.

This is why I hope we don't bother replacing Heaton, Sinisalo as the U23 and 3rd keeper for the season seems like the minimum to keep him interested. I like Filip Marschall as well and I'd hope him or Onodi could step up to be 3rd next season and we can let Steer go for first team football somewhere.
-
I would get him to sign a new long-term contract and look to get him regular first team football somewhere, ideally a Championship club. Maybe take an experienced keeper on loan for a season if Marschall or Onodi aren't ready.
-
Think he only has one year of his deal left, so either try to extend his deal, or sell him I guess.
-
Professional contracts handed out to 7 of the U23's including a 5-year contract for Kaine Kesler Hayden. We clearly think highly of him in particular. Wonder whether that means he will be Matty Cash's back up this season rather than going out on loan.

Pissing Albion off now too :)

Brilliant.
Some very talented players being rewarded.
Raikhy looks some player btw.

Not a fan of this. If we think he's going to contribute to the team, send him somewhere of a decent standard to learn. If not, sell/release him.
-
Might be thinking if he does well there, we will at least get a fee for him.
-
Tim Iroegbunam expected to sign a 4-year deal today. Iroegbunam is a defensive midfielder who won academy player of the year for Albion last year and was on the bench for their senior team for the last game. We're paying Albion six figures for his development costs as compensation.
Has anybody watched him? Anybody remember him from the youth cup semi final?
-
Maybe we can form up some sort of partnership whereby we are West Brom's Parent club? Like we did with Walsall.

Tim is an excellent player. A more defensive CM player but with a decent eye for goal. Quick enough and a shade over 6ft. Good range of passing.
Was training with the first team at WBA toward the end of last season. A good lad and popular with his peers.

Going on recent movements, we already have.

Am I right in thinking you work at the Baggies academy?
-
Yes.

Agent Rotterdam :)
-
Ssshhhh.
-
Yes.
It must be somewhat difficult for you seeing youngsters that you've invested time and effort into being courted by other clubs of higher standing, divorcing yourself from the club you support notwithstanding. I know it's football with all its machinations but I'd imagine it must be a little bit gutting nonetheless. On the other hand a certain amount of pride in his development is due. I hope it works out for him.
-
I can't say too much for obvious reasons, but what I've learnt is 'money talks' and agents are rife...its been mentioned that kids are treated like commodities.

I understand that and despite what club it is, it's a shame, more so if the kid doesn't make it. Agents are leeches.

Totally correct. The money involved even at a young age is ridiculous.
-
Yes.
Thought so, thanks for the input, sounds like a ver good prospect.
On the money, etc side I don't find that such a problem when it's a playing moving across Birmingham (for example) I have more concerns when players are moved from other countries like this.

They can't be, if they're under-18, except within the EU/EEA.

They can't be, if they're under-18, except within the EU/EEA.
I was thinking of us signing players like Bogarde and Swinkels last summer, I like the look of thme and I'm very happy that they're here but I'm not entirely comfortable with it, 18 is where I think the line should be drawn on ALL international moves. I find the amount of South Americans that have moved to Spain and Portugal over the years particularly bad and I'm glad steps have been taken against that.
-
It's when you read things like a kid joining Man United because United have bought a new house for his parents where it highlights a distasteful side to it. There is a certain amount of commodification about it.
-
That's another one in then - https://www.afcb.co.uk/news/club-news/burchall-moves-to-aston-villa/

18 is where the line is drawn on all international transfers. EU freedom of movement trumps FIFA regulations, though. We were able to sign them last year because, although we had technically left the EU, we were still in the transitional period and subject to those laws.
-
Burchall is very talented. Bournemouth are only a Cat 3 academy, but lots of clubs were after him.
-
Our academy is really beginning to develop into something that's going to have a very strong reputation - https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2021/july/Ten-new-scholars-sign-for-Villa/.

God knows what we are doing but the kids seem to want to come here now which is fantastic. Having just read Sir Brian’s book I don’t think we’ve ever had a youth set up like this. The Sky six must be wondering what the hell is going on. Bring it on!
-

Great news (as long as he's not related to Julie).

I wonder whether the owners have ambitions for our youth academy to be talked of alongside those of Barcelona and Ajax.

If people don't fancy the s*n link, here's another from February https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/sport/19103834.arsenal-reportedly-lead-transfer-chase-ajani-burchall/
Although it must be said that it looks like we'd ousted them in April as favourites to land the kid.

If there are 2 million more Europeans in the UK than was first thought and all of whom appear to be applying for settled status, who is going home in such numbers to account for the large number of vacancies in certain industries?
-
I wonder whether the owners have ambitions for our youth academy to be talked of alongside those of Barcelona and Ajax.
Villa are really going for it at all levels within the academy. The set up at Bodymoor is very impressive, not just the players facilities but the attention to detail. Parents have lounges with workstations and Wifi allowing them to work whilst waiting for the kids to finish training, viewing galleries over looking the 4G and the show pitch. Complementary food is on offer as the parent maybe be waiting from 5pm until gone 8pm three evenings a week. They have one such building which has just opened, and Purslow apparently visited it, deemed it too small so another is to be built next door. Locally, no club is anywhere near Villa's facilities.
Little touches like this make a huge difference and help attract kids to sign. Facilities though do need filling, the academy staffing apparently has tripled in the last two years at BH, giving players more attention. Other clubs like Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea have amazing training facilities (arguably better than BH) , but unless you have got the staff and the players, it's pointless.
Player-wise the approach seems straight forward. Sign the best players we can locally and source the best players around the country and beyond. The more we get in, the more chance we have of unearthing another gem or two. If they don't make it at Villa, they still may have a worth (£) as I said 'commodities'. The lads are sold a project by Mark Harrison and Steve Hopcroft and the physical set up at Bodymoor helps sell the club as well as top coaching. I believe players like Bogarde and Swinkels were hooked in by the club and the attention to detail.
What is clear, is that the owners are backing the academy; new facility near VP, staff, better facilities at Bodymoor etc. Last year Villa U18 had what amounts to an 'A' team with Barry, Young, Swinkels, Kessler et al, and a 'B' team for run of the mill U18 league games. The former bolster the U23s when needed and therefore a pathway and progression is clear. Another point is young lads see Chuck, Louis, Kessler, Ramsay in and around the first team, so reinforcing the point that a pathway is there.
What all of this needs is...money, lots of money. Some clubs have it, most don't. We do and we are spending it correctly.
-

In an indirect way, are we doing it by buying fancy new houses for them and their parents?

Thanks for this, all sounds very promising.

Thanks Rotterdam. I think I'm right in saying too that investment into the youth and training facilities doesn't count against FFP. There's a very clear strategy and I think it's very clever. It's interesting what you said about other clubs having fantastic facilities, some better than ours (Mings was supposedly blown away when he saw Spurs') but if we're investing in not only the best staff but also ensuring the numbers are there so that the kids have a lot more 1:1 time, that can only help their development and result in more success. Be that breaking through to the first team or having market value for us and a career as a well paid professional footballer for them.
To think that we're only 3 years into their project too. It's only going to grow and scale.
-
Brilliant reading, Rotterdam. On a morning when we all hope the national team can do the business let's hope that on future occasions there are many more names with "Aston Villa" beside them on the team sheet.

Another Albion kid we're signing - https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-aston-villa-set-to-sign-azaz-from-west-brom-and-loan-him-to-newport-county/.
Might as well just make Albion our B team.

Onodi out on loan to bromsgrove sporting, I'd have hope he'd have got offers a bit higher than that but it'll still be a good experience for him.

Ignore. I think it's the one I put on our FB Page yesterday.
-
What's going on under the first team is incredibly telling as to what these owners want to achieve.
We already have a squad ot extremely talented youngsters. The best for many a year yet we are still developing and still recruiting the best. Still building for a long and sustainable future of strength and success.
-
I think it's a really smart strategy. We're going to struggle to recruit the very best established players but we can recruit some of the best young talents and then when you've already really fostered an environment where those young players have the best opportunity to thrive and develop into top players, over time we'll have a first team squad full of some of the best players around.
Every day these kids come into train, they'll be training with the best of their peer group as well as getting all the top coaching and more one to one time than most in their age group.
The likes of Chelsea and Man City have really talented kids but often with no clear pathway to their senior team. I've tried to think who else has used this approach in this country and I can only think of the 'You don't win anything with kids' Man United bunch. It's going to be a really attractive proposition for the best young kids to know that they're a priority in our strategy, that they'll be looked after better than many senior teams and that if you develop, there's a very good chance that you'll make it through to our first team and if not, still likely to have a professional career elsewhere.
-

He's still so young. Any competitive mens football is a good move for him.

Yeah I agree, I'm just surprised that no one a bit higher has come in. Maybe it was important to keep him in the midlands though.
-
Same for Cam when he went to Solihull Moors but it went really well for him.
-
Any word what he's doing this season Leeg?
-
Back at the Villa at the moment.
-
It will be interesting to see if we keep him involved in the U23's, have him training with the first team and playing him in the league cup games or whether we send him out for more experience.

Decent article summarising the likely make-up of the team for this year's FA Youth Cup.

We seem to be cherry picking the best local talent which is fantastic to see.
-
Doesn't say much for the development aspect of players from earlier age groups.
-

I think that we slipped behind all local clubs a few years ago and now we are playing catch up before we dominate the age group market.

Yeah...it's a bit suss that we couldn't spot these kids in the first place. Feels a bit wrong, waving our wonga at our little neighbours.
-

That’s why we recruited Albion’s academy manager, Mark Harrison. He is one of the best in the business. All part of the strategic plan ....
-
No. Far from it.

Really, why ?
-
https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2021/july/U23-2021-22-PL2-fixtures-announced/
-
They have to get themselves into the top league.
-
Maybe not. Using the U23s as a higher level of difficulty for a lot of our U18s arguably contributed massively to us winning the Youth Cup.
-
And they'll get better still if the U23's are at the next level up. With some of the talent we've been recruiting, it has to be a target.
-
Maybe so, it's a balancing act. Could be that the second division is a sweet spot of being challenging enough for a talented 18 year-old and not too difficult which it might be a level higher (as you've got fringe first-team squad players from top clubs needing game-time and turning-out in U23s games).
I guess what I was trying to say was that I'd take a second division U23s side if the U18s win the Youth Cup. But I take your point. We're a big club, at all levels competing at the top tier should be a given. Just think the U23s is the one in-between area that maybe is not as important. The good players too old for the U18s are probably better served going on-loan to a lower league club than hanging around Bodymoor for a few more years.
-
I think one of the things we've got wrong in the past is caring about how we do in the U23/U18/reserve leagues when results aren't really what matters at that level.
I'm with Eamonn, I think the U23 league should be used to keep players on the fringe of the first team squad match fit and to give gametime to players recovering from injuries. For example I'm happy with Sinisalo as 3rd choice next year but he also needs regular games so the U23s works for him.

My point really is about the kids being able to regularly compete against a higher standard of competition (first division versus second division).
Being obsessed with how well they were doing would be expecting them to be in contention to win the top league and holding onto players too long to do so, when they would be better off being loaned out to continue their development. That's the mistake we've made before.
-

I don't know how much difference in quality there really is though. The games we struggled in last season weren't against teams with great academies full of good players. It was against teams full of 21-23 year olds who were further along in their development. By not giving a shit about the results and instead exposing 17-18 year olds to those teams I think we're hoping to create a step between Academy/U18/Youth Cup and the loans market to make the steps to the first team shallower.

Ta, Dave.
Any idea where and when the U-23s are playing Chesterfield in pre-season?
-
It seems to have gone unmentioned but we've completed the signing of Albion's Academy player of the season, Tim Iroegbunam, on a 4-year deal. Apparently he and Louie Barry played together at Sutton United when they were very young.
-
Tim is a good number 8, box to box. Intelligent and hard working. Money talked again as he would have most have been on the fringes of the first team at WBA and would have certainly been training with 1st team.
-
To catch or overtake the 2 Manchester clubs,Liverpool and Chelsea we need this devolopment of young talent.Chelsea have had at their disposal an incredible array of young players, fortunately quite a few have left as their path to first team football has been blocked.
Villa need to create an open pathway and not create a big squad of senior players. It might penalise the first team in the short term but in 4-5 years we could be reaping huge rewards.
-
Thanks Rotterdam. Saying how cheap it is to sign the best young developmental talents, it's perhaps surprising that no-one else has really considered a sustained approach of gearing a club towards ensuring that long-term recruitment is done this way, with big money moves only going where gaps need filling.
-
A top academy prospect may cost between £250K and £500K (lets say) dependent upon years there and age.
My thoughts are the same as you OCD, 'throw enough darts and you'll score a bullseye or two'.
-
With an environment where they've got some of the best coaching, great facilities, lots of one-on-one time, great first team prospects, individual plans and a group of similarly talented players, we must be giving ourselves a great chance. Before now, we may have had one or two talented kids who were able to rest on their laurels because there was no competition within the group. This approach means that it will be very competitive and if they don't continue to develop, they may struggle for games.
-
Does anyone know what the line-ups were for the matches on Saturday?

I think Trialist 1 and Trialist 2 were in there somewhere.

Good move for him, hope he goes well.

Yes, this is what we want. The bright lights from the Youth Cup team cutting their teeth at senior, competitive level.
Mind you...aren't Swindon a bit of a basket-case at the moment?
-

The lad from Bournemouth and Cameron Archer played at Stafford, as did either Stefan or Luke Moore (opinion is divided)'s son. Let that sink in for a moment.
-
Cam played at Stafford straight after being an unused sub for the U23s vs Crewe.
-
Stefan's son is on our books according to that article in The Athletic I posted a month or two back. Let that sink-in, indeed...where does it all go...
-
Hourihane and Wes were at Crewe.

Swindon is indeed. I was surprised to see that we'd sent him to a place that has lost its manager and cannot afford currently to pay the wages from May onwards.

Well, decent chance he'll get some games then. Good news for us.

I wasn't thinking so much about him getting paid; more about the loss of their good players and the potentially-poor morale around a club in financial and ownership crisis. I just wonder what sort of experience he'll get and what quality of coaching he'll benefit from.

I saw on the Graun’s transfer window interactive, we’ve signed Josh Pheeney from Fleetwood Town. Not sure when that happened and probably no one really cares today, but just wondering if anyone knows anything about him or has seen him play?

This one is from weeks ago, he looks a great prospect, composed ball playing centre half/defensive midfielder.
-
England U16 captain. Tall lad too.
-
Thanks. We seem to be doing a fair bit of investment for the future with the young players being brought in. Good signs for the next 5 years or so.

Pheeney, not Feeney? With Austin McPhee also now in-tow, we're taking the p(h)ee.

Louie Barry off to Ipswich. Sounds like an excellent move for all parties.

- Distribution was a bit poor at times and was a bit rash and shouldn't have given away the penalty. But made a few commanding claims and two very smart saves. Forgotten what its like to have a decent keeper.
Kaine Kesler-Hayden 9
- No wonder he has a 5 year contract. Defended soundly and was an immense attacking threat. Incredibly quick and gifted. Would have created more in first half if we could have found him with the ball!
Baudry 6.5
- Did what he needed to do. Still takes too many risks for my liking.

Swindon Town player ratings after win over Scunthorpe United
https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/sport/swindon_town_2014/19498922.swindon-town-player-ratings-win-scunthorpe-united/
ADVER Sport assess the performances of the Swindon Town players following the club's 3-1 victory over Scunthorpe United.
Jojo Wollacott: 7
Pulled off a handful of excellent saves and claimed aerial balls really well throughout. At fault for the penalty, however.
Kaine Kesler-Hayden: 9
The Villa man was excellent on his debut, showing pace, awareness, and most importantly winning the penalty that got Town back into the game. Hopefully, his injury is not too serious, and he can continue like that all season. Subbed.

Three more youngsters sign pro deals. https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2021/august/Academy-trio-sign-pro-deals/
If Aaron is half as good as another St. Pat's alumnus we had...
-
Villa loanee Louis Barry's Ipwich playing against Villa loanee Finn Azaz's Newport in League Cup. Both players started. Currently one-nil to Newport after a goal for Timmy Abraham (brother of Tammy) assisted by Azaz.

The league season starts tomorrow for the reserve/u23s, we play Notts Forest.

Amazing bit of research. There's a book in that......
-
Anyone know why the U23 game against Forest tonight is not on Villa Tv ,in fact i have not seen it even mentioned at all
-
Unable to broadcast with Arse game at the same time!
-
Thanks for that, at least the Forest website mentioned the match and that it was not being streamed ,nothing from Villa as far as i aware
-
Losing two-nil.

I got a message saying it will be available in full from something like midnight!
-
1-2, Aaron Ramsey pulls one back .
-
Two each. Brad Young.
-
Now three-two to the Villa! Finally Thorndike. He must be the trialist.
-
4-2 and it's Archer!
-
3- 2 to villa now Finley thorndike make that 4 -2 now
-
4 in 12 minutes (if you discount halftime)
-
FOIV TWO. Brad Young again.
-
Well done Brad the goal machine
-
game of 2 halves and all that

This is who the triallist is. No prizes for guessing where we got him from. https://www.westbromnews.co.uk/2021/07/29/finley-thorndike-at-aston-villa-after-leaving-west-brom/.
I take it did finish 5-2? The Twitter feed mentioned the fifth and then said the full-time score was 4-2.
-
5-2 FT.
-
Thanks Leeg.
-
Cam with a goal and at least one assist.

Highlights on at 10pm.

Mat Kendrick made a joke the other day about arrivals at West Brom Academy getting a tour of Villa Park...
🤣

What a start!!
-
Full game on Villa TV. Warning you will need to accept Jack Woodward’s verbal diarrhea
-
Young Cam Archer was just superb

i am losing count is that 4 we have had off them
-
A year on loan has probably done Cam the world of good and will probably smash it at U23 level now.
-
Finley Thorndike sounds like a character from Last of the Summer Wine.
-
Ramsey junior was class. He has a bit of arrogance about him and funnily enough reminds me of the other Aaron Ramsey
-
A year on loan has probably done Cam the world of good and will probably smash it at U23 level now.
Agreed. He either needs a further spell on loan at a higher level or opportunities with the first team.

Any idea of the lineup for the U18s against Arsenal?

Currently one down. Are the two O'Reillys related?
-
Are the two O'Reillys related?
Seems unlikely as came to Villa separately and and were born 6.5 months apart.
-
2-0 to the Arsenal...
-
Now 2-1, another fightback on the cards? Taylor Jay-Hart scored for Villa.
-
Fightback maybe not on after all. 3-1.
-
Watching the highlights of the U23s there's a few things to mention:
4-5 of these Villa players are too good for U23, should either go out on loan or be training with the seniors.
Archer looks like he's bulked up a lot in the last year, looks much stronger and he really should've had a hattrick.
Us only getting 5 flatters them, we demolished them in the 2nd half.
Ramsey nearly scored one of the best goals you'll ever see, just needed to put more on the shot at the end.
The Academy grounds at BMH look incredible, the improvement in the facilities is huge and that will play a big part in us attracting the very best youngsters.
-
Young looked decent too. Agree Archer probably should have scored more, was a real handful as was Ramsey.
Enjoyed the U23s game a lot more than the senior one! The villa TV coverage of them is pretty good too.
-
Bradley Young heading to Carlisle on loan, good luck to him.
-
Is the full match available anywhere? I've only seen the highlights on the OS FB Page.

It's on Villa TV but I think you need to subscribe to see the full 90.

U23s vs Middlesbrough this evening.

1-2 up at HT. Archer and Ramsey.
-
I see Chukwuemeka came on as sub. I assume that's Caleb?! Bit confusing when they only put C Chukwuemeka on the screen.

It was Caleb

Ta.
I'd be surprised if there's not 2 or 3 more of the kids going out on loan.

Apparently Burchall has been incredible and looks like he's far too good for U18 football.
-
Eight-nil. Aaron O'Reilly.
-
Nine, come on get ten, please! Dewain Sewell completing his hat-trick for the ninth.
-
Make that 9-0 now

TEN!!!

poor norwich 🤔

10 -0 now

That's Burchall's hat-trick, too. Do they have half a match ball each?

Both Sewell and Burchell hat tricks
-
Get some of the U23's out on loan and promote some of the U18's to the U23's.

Still no highlights of the 10-0, anywhere.
Wound any other club try to keep a 10-0 win a secret from most of its fans? Utterly baffling.

Cheers mate, take it back. Looked all over their Twitter account for them, must not have woken up yet. 🙂
-
Sylla, who looked promising against Liverpool in the cup, has left to sign for Almeria.
Strange...how come?
-
No idea. Perhaps he fancied the move? He'S from Spain so could have been homesick perhaps more understandable in current circumstances. I don't think Villa released him.
-
Ah ok, didn't realise he was Spanish. Understandable that being away from home at that age can be tough.
-
I read a couple of weeks back that Sylla wanted to leave because he wanted the same sort of chances as Bidace and Chuwuemeka were given training wit the first team
-
Sylla, who looked promising against Liverpool in the cup, has left to sign for Almeria.
Work in Almeria fairly regularly so sometimes watch them (also watch Albacete, Malaga and Elche when in Spain), will keep an eye on him.
-
Caleb Chukwuemeka equalises for the under-23s, now Villa 1 Fulham 1.
-
Hard match. Fulham look the better team but Villa have hung in there. Need to pass that little bit better, find their man better.
-
The vast majority of the better players are out on loan or involved with the first team.
-
The vast majority of the better players are out on loan or involved with the first team.
... and i suspect the team we put out today has an average age of about 18 making it a very young group even for the u23s.
-
Lee Carsley has selected 1 Villa player - Jacob Ramsey - for the England U21's; his first squad.

Tyriek Wright, currently on loan at Salford, is in the Ireland under-21's, too.

-
Tyriek Wright, currently on loan at Salford, is in the Ireland under-21's, too.
Celebrating by scoring in the 1st minute against Newport.
-
Dom Revan gone out to Northampton.
-
So far, we've loaned out:
Tyriek Wright - Salford City
Brad Young - Carlisle United
Arjan Raikhy - Stockport County
Seb Revan - Grimsby Town
Also Onodi - Bromsgrove Sporting
Kaine Kesler - Swindon Town
Louie Barry - Ipswich Town
Indian Vassilev - Inter Miami
Dom Revan - Northampton Town
The Jedi is certainly going to be busy keeping abreast of their progress.
The number of players that we've loaned out is evidence that Purslow's statement about not wanting players drifting in the U23s is being actioned.
Clearly they all won't make the first team squad, but sending them out on loan will help in deciding which ones have the ability, physical strength and character to be worth keeping.

Awful miss by JPB

Archers looking really good
JPB really looking gash. Missed two sitters

Match delayed. Partridge on the pitch.

Restarted. Partridge returned to pear tree.

Zych with a decent save and they've hit the post as well.
Sanson looks like he's carrying a bit of extra timber...

Wycombe well on top here. Zito and archer best players so far.
Sanson been very quiet and JPBs been pretty poor

Archer close!

Archer close!
How you watching the game ?

Archer levels, assist from Sanson.

HT one apiece.
Crap for half an hour but got better and finished the half on top.
Sanson doing what Connor did at Barrow last week, Archer very good, JPB missed a couple of chances.

Finley Thorndike signs with us after a few trial matches. Hopefully he makes it big with us, purely for having a great name.

Good, they can stop calling him 'Trialist' now :)

Tyreik Wright scores (pen) as ROI U-21s beat Bosnia 2-0.
-
Chuk captained England u19s to a 2-0 win v Italy.Ramsey and keeper Marshall are also in the squad.Same amount of players as Chelsea and Spurs,Citeh have the most with 4.
A bit of a sobering reassessment of our youngsters' potential ? But..of the other clubs who got to the last 8,Everton,Liverpool and Sheff U have one player each in the squad.
Different nationalities,a glut of players for the same position ,a few high talented players at one club but our feeder club, the Baggies thumped Spurs 5-0,yet Spurs get 3 in the squad .
-
Tyreik Wright scores (pen) as ROI U-21s beat Bosnia 2-0.
Try him in the first team...we're a bag of bruscar at the moment.

I was at Wycombe Tues for my first ever reserves match. There were certainly a good few other Villa fans there which made it feel like a bit of a shame that we all weren't sitting together, there where enough of us to constitute an end, or at least a section, I thought. I presume the group of Villa fans who were together in the one stand (Lords Stand I think it's called) were the official party, friends and family of the players, who had come in the two coaches in the lower car park. Pity we weren't all together, given that we'd all made a journey of some description to go and watch the kids.

A few are in London.
-
With Chukwuemeka (Carney) and JPB out injured there were bound to be some call-ups for the 9 man bench. I wasn't even thinking of Cam, I was automatically assuming he would be part of the squad!
-
Abysmal defending for three of the Naaaarch goals.
We live and learn, hopefully...

The youth system is still a long way away from where I want it to get too. Hopefully the club think that too.

Presumably Aaron Ramsey is in the senior squad then.

On the piss (m'lord) ?

JPB's performance against Wycombe was really impressive; a real shame he ended up with his foot in a protective boot after ten minutes of playing for England!
Does anyone know how serious it is?

1-0 already, great gola by chuk snr
-
2-1 Villa. Belting goal from Ramsey Jnr.
-
They equalised from a free kick after about 18-19minutes but Ramsey has just put us back ahead after dribbling through about 4-5 tackles.
So far we've been miles better than them, Caleb Chuk looks far too good for kids football, I suspect he'll be off on loan in January if he's not on the fringes of the first team by then.
Oh and there's a 3rd, Chuk again.
-
Very entertaining half of football.
Great desire to get the ball back and when we have it always looking to move the ball forward quickly. The striking thing for me is how comfortable all of our players look on the ball, loads of skill out there.
Caleb Chuk has played well and Thorndike has some real quality on the ball. Ramsey Jnr a class above. Also really like the look of Lindley, who has put in some great tackles.
Wouldn't have flattered us to have had 4 or 5 goals.
-
Thorndike has the thing a lot of young wingers do which is he looks fantastic until it comes to end product, he should have a goal or 2 and at least 1 assist already.
Iroegbunam is going to be a player I reckon, he's not quite ready but he has everything you'd want from a young centre midfielder.
The only negative is that our defence has looked a bit of a mess but I think most of that is down to swinkels looking badly out of position at left back.
-
Enjoying this a lot. Great to watch free-flowing football and some great talent on show.
-
We finally sign Thorndike so that he no longer appears as 'Triallist' and we sign another one! Anyone have any idea who the trialist is?
-

According to Twitter, Declan Frith, who played for Chelsea as a left-back last season. Seems to be playing much further forward for us though.

2-1 Villa. Belting goal from Ramsey Jnr.

We've played poorly so far in the 2nd half and as a result they've pulled one back from a corner, hopefully we wake up a bit now.
3-2

I think I'd like to see him as a full back, he's a bit meh on the wing, not got the pace or skill to make a full back uncomfortable but does seem pretty neat and tidy.
-
Better since they scored but a few players trying to do it on their own.
Ramsey has been subbed but they were doubling up on him and he'd barely had a kick 2nd half.
-

Not watching the game but that seems a weird reaction, surely the manager (and players) should be identifying where the extra man is?

I'm not sure if he went off because of it, just pointing out that we didn't take off a guy who was bossing play. Lad who came on for him (O'Reilly) has worked his tits off to be fair, reminds me a bit of trez, in both good and bad ways, seems to sometimes be running too much for his own good.
-
What a move and super goal by Chuckie senior
-
Big Chuk gets his hattrick, great ball to him by Frith (the trialist).
He'd missed a couple of decent chances this half so glad he didn't blow it. His movement off the ball is really good, I reckon he'd do really well with passes from Buendia and Bailey.

Trialist from Chelsea called Frith. He was struggling to have an impact for the first hour but that was quality and he had a couple of nearly moments just before.

Was there anyone in the Albion team worth taking? :)
-
Was there anyone in the Albion team worth taking? :)
I know you're taking the piss but no, not really, one of the attacking players was decent but nothing more. The central defenders were totally overwhelmed by chuk, ramsey and thorndike, it really wouldn't have flattered us if we'd put 7-8 on them.
-

paul_e is about right I'd say.
Decent crowd last night of 300 or so.
Ramsay Jnr is class and ran the show, he had the crowd gasping over a few touches and dribbles, plus he has a great ability to drift in to space.
Caleb Chuck finished his goals well and had 3 or 4 more chances.
Tim is a quality '8'. Great range of passes and glides across the pitch. He's a lovely lad but in for terms has a bit of an edge.
The trialist was good in small flashes; his attempted 'rainbow flick' in the first half didn't go down well with the Villa bench. Boateng shouting orders from pitchside, Delaney at the back of the stand.
Prior to the game I was approached by Gary Shaw (!) to confirm the WBA formation. I then had to tell the lads who he was, they were highly impressed he had a European Cup medal and was EYPotY.
-
Good post Rotterdam thank you. In your opinion, does the trialist have what it takes to earn a contract seeing the level of talent we are currently recruiting.
Makes me feel really old when you have to tell kids who Gary Shaw is!
-
I'd say 'no' dave. He apparently turned down a contract offer from Chelsea and seems to fancy he can get a better offer elsewhere (see Tim Iroegbunam).
Talking with my dad after the game, we were discussing the chances of the lads making 'it'. Even U23 at a top academy like Villa they have a small chance of making the PL. Most will make a decent living for a few years in the lower leagues. Not many make the PL grade and if they haven't by 19/20 years old, they probably won't. Finn Thorndike was nowhere near the 1st team at WBA, but Villa have probably signed him as an extra body to cover for the likes of Barry, Young etc while they are on loan. The Villa academy staff would know him well.
The other thing is the balancing act of players like Carney and Cameron Archer being around the 1st team squad but not getting much, if any, game time. Too good for U23, not quite there for the 1st team. One of WBA U23s hadn't played play three and a half weeks, aside from training with the first team.
A final thing is the money...some of these lads are on 2k, 3k, 5k a week! Madness until you consider that a young first year pro on a three year contact could earn nearly 500k before they are too far past their 21st birthday. But if one or two make it, they could save the club tens of millions in fees plus earn them a huge transfer fee (see our old number 10). Even if they arent deemed good enough, a lower level team may throw an offer in.
-
Not quite there for the first team yet. Plus they need to be given an opportunity to see if they are good enough at the highest level and barring injuries I cannot see Cam starting ahead of Watkins or Ings. Just hoping for a few appearances from the bench at the moment. He was so close to coming on against Brentford for the last 10 minutes.
-
Thanks for the insight Rotterdam it's much appreciated. As you say, if those on 2k a week don't make it at PL level, by the time they move on they could almost be set-up financially for life if they're careful, guaranteed to be nailed-on if they make it in the championship.
-
I know a lad who was in the Blues academy and must have been on good money. Ultimately he was released but he invested in property and lets them out and has a business coaching golf so he's a good example. He was a bit full of himself when I started to get to know him, just after he had been released but he became more down to earth and became a good guy.

What was the other hammering we handed out? Norwich 9-0?
I think the u18’s got 10 against Norwich. 10-1 if I remember right.
-
It's only reserve team football but everything I've seen and heard about chuk senior makes me think he was an absolute steal.
Chuk jnr and JPB are just far too good for reserve team football and I suspect Ramsey will join his brother in the first teamsquad soon as well, this lot could save us an absolute fortune in the next couple of seasons.
-
I agree, I think the next 2 windows maybe one or two purchases and maybe a loan here and there, to give the kids some time to grow

Agreed, it was more a 'blimey he must be good to be in that team at CB when he's barely 16' comment than anything else.
-
As good as a of of these kids obviously are the more pleasing thing is how we are actually introducing them to first team activities and even bench / game time.
With Dean, the coaches and Mark Delaney we really do have a wonderful football set up today
Is it any wonder all the best young talent wanted to play for us?
-
Watching the highlights on villatv the thing that really stuck out for me was how good carney chuk and tim iroegbunam look together, both have a similar physique and both have quite a languid style but cover the ground brilliantly and pressure the ball really well ad then in possession they can both carry it out of defence and pick a pass. Ramsey is also a great talent but being the 'spare' in that midfield must be a delight.
Aside from that the chest control from caleb chuk for the 8th was immaculate, to repeat he was a fucking steal for what we paid.
-

So is the older brother (Caleb?) playing as a midfielder? When signed people suggested he was a forward with a poor scoring record (on YouTube he didn’t look like he was playing that role).

Up front but we seem to be pretty fluid with players drifting into each others space and all of our attacking players look like decent finishers. I love watching the U23s right now, they play fantastic football. Next match is Friday live on VillaTV and it's well worth the £2pm sub fee to watch.
-
Good to see that JPB can play on the left. Some lovely interchanges and even though they scored 10, they still had other chances so it could have been even more.

Yeah, sorry 8. Getting mixed up with the earlier video and similar results.

Yeah, sorry 8. Getting mixed up with the earlier video and similar results.
Understandable, even in the highlights we missed a couple of gilt-edged chances so could easily have been 10.
-
I think it was two years ago that Christian Purslow stood up at the supporters trust Agm and said something along the lines that our academy wasn't working if we had 22 year old playing in the under 23s, and that we needed to have an under 23 team full of excellent 16-18 year old.
Fair to say that vision is really making excellent progress 👏🏻

From The Villa Academy Twitter feed
Half Time: #AVFC 0-0 #WWFC Villa have grown into this but it has been an even first half with chances appearing for both sides. Villa have been frustrated by some last ditch and committed defending preventing any clear strike on goal but two deflected shots have gone close.
-
Shame JPB playing would like him in the senior squad Sunday.
-
FT 0-0.
-
They were a lot bigger than us and we struggled to put several passes together -too many players looking like individuals who have to do it all themselves.
Ex-Albion Tim in midfield was superb; good games for Ealing and Bogarde as well. The latter really is a class footballer.

Even with all the promising kids we have Tim is one I have a funny feeling might well turn out to be a gem. Also really like the look of Bogarde anytime I see him play.
-
Wolves came to stop us playing and to be fair did it quite well and looked lie the most likely to win .Has to be the poorest i have ever seen Ramsey play but i guess he is going to have a bad game every now again

Suprised we didnt go stronger

Archer pulls one back. Great strike.
-
Got one back really good finish from Cam.
-
I'd rather we didn't enter at all, it is supposed to be a chance for the lower league clubs to have a day in the sun and play in a Wembley final. Not everything has to revolve around the Premier League.

Brilliant stuff.

very good play by caleb in the build up to drag the defender out and then play the pass into the gap it created.
-
Amazing.
Think we need to sort out a new contract for.him and Legion.
-
Amazing. When I last looked we had just got one back, now another hat-trick. Archer is a goal machine up front. Brilliant stuff, another exciting star in the making.
-
Villa equalise through Abldeen-Goodridge…2-2
I like to think I've been following the progress of the young kids but haven't heard of him before now.
It's worth noting that pretty much all the other PL U-21 teams are getting well beaten atm with Delfouneso scoring one of Bolton's 3 against Liverpool's kids.
-
I’ve just looked at all the groups. Everyone else’s academy’s are either bottom or just off bottom. Our young lads are really doing very well aren’t they.
-
No 'pretty much' about it, they're all losing. I'm off to post about Ollie Watkins.

He was a regular for the U18s last year and looked pretty decent, big step up for him today.
I sort of agree with CD about us being in this but it is does show how much better the system is now that even though we got overran for half an hour there's a steel to this kids.
-
No 'pretty much' about it, they're all losing. I'm off to post about Ollie Watkins.
Tbf when I last looked Wolves had been winning and Shrewsbury had just equalised. I see it went further downhill for them after that.

I’ve just looked at all the groups. Everyone else’s academy’s are either bottom or just off bottom. Our young lads are really doing very well aren’t they.
Ours is a strong group as well with all 3 of the teams we're in with likely to be in the mix for promotion to the championship at the end of the season.

It’s quite incredible as the step up is quite a jump. Fair play to them all and the coaches. It’s great to see.
-
Can you rest kids 😂
That would be a first
-
That was a superb second half performance. Looked like they were going to be out muscled in the first 30 mins, then went on to dominate.
Archer is some finisher & Bogarde looks like he could play all day.
-
700 Villa there apparently.
-
Cracking game. We got bullied for the first twenty mins or so and they pressed us into making mistakes. We seemed to gain confidence after the goal and kept trying to play football. Second half Caleb played deeper and improved, impressed by Bogarde, Lindley and Ealing (attacking wise) but head and shoulders above everyone was Archer. He’s strong, fast and scored three cracking goals.
Thoroughly enjoyable night.
-
Imagine taking 50000 to Wembley to see the kids
-
700 Villa there apparently.
Gotta say that's pretty impressive. Not only is it a fillip to the kids but it's also an extra few bob for a lower league team whose average attendance is 3k.
-
Caleb's certainly a big unit; and pretty neat footwork. How long till he'll be pushing for a first team squad slot?
-
The way it's going it'll be easier to get a ticket for Wembley than for Watford at home.
-
I was there last night we were brilliant to come back from 2-0 down shows how good we are.
-
Just been readings Preece’s article about Ajani Burchall which prompted me to dig out his obligatory YT video. Check out his bit of skill at 2.34. We have another potential star on our hands!

I’ll see you there mate ( if I knew what you looks like )
Just picture a smaller version of Dave Woodhall.
I think he looks like Danny Baker. Woolley, not Dave.
I’ll be on the lookout
You can spot me easily apparently I look a lot like that Chris Hemsworth

Whadaya know, 433.
I'm a great believer that apart from the odd occasion, teams should play the same formation through to the 1st team. It's the key to the progress of your young players.
Keenan's got a yellow.

am i allowed to paste a link

Privately, yes please.

One up, Davis. They've just levelled through the marvellously named Troy Parrot. A name worth repeating.
-
2-2 HT, Davis and Archer.
-
1400 Villa there apparently.
-
Boo.

He's worth his weight in gold.

Parrot, the type of player that could ruffle a few feathers

Everytime I hear the commentator say Swinkells I think of Mike Read.
Wallop.

Another great goal by Archer.

The way I see it, ourselves, West Ham and Chelsea Academies are through. Good chance none of the others will.
-
Pretty decent result when you consider Man City's U21s lost 5-0 at League 1 Rotherham.
-

Chelsea lost on pens?

They already won their first two games (the first was on pens).

Excuse my ignorance, I haven’t a clue how this competition works.
-
Excuse my ignorance, I haven’t a clue how this competition works.
Neither do I.
-
Sixteen groups of four. Each includes three Football League clubs and one Premier League B team. All draws are settled by penalty shoot-outs, even in the group stage. You get three points for a win in normal time, two for a win on penalties and one for losing on penalties. The B teams play all three games away. Top two in each group go through to the knockout stage.
-
Ta. What a ridiculous set-up.
-
Yep.
-
Well it may sound churlish but fuck it, I like a bit of churl. I'd rather watch the style of football served up last night than that the first team have been presenting lately. Hardly a hoof in sight.

Forget the hoof, how about the mighty long throw. We must have used this act of beauty?
-
I was there last night we played really well this group of player's are special I've been to all the EFL Trophy games this season and I've really enjoyed every game.
-
I know some are against B-teams/Under 21's and the way the competition works is pretty novel but 1400 Villa fans were at this last night and presumably it will have been similar at the other games too. That's got to be good for the smaller clubs and the rule about U21's games all being away makes sense.

2 brilliant finishes by Archer there.
-
1 goal and 2 assists for Davis - worth mentioning.
-
1 goal and 2 assists for Davis - worth mentioning.
And although against weaker opposition - looked strong and powerful
-
Special mention to the keeper as well, who was massively vocal behind the defence all evening.
Really enjoyed being there, there are some special talents in that team and really excited to see how many progress towards the first team.
Stadium MK really is a lovely stadium, right in the middle of nowhere. And £10 parking really is taking the proverbial.

Those sections had big NO EVENT PARKING. ANPR IN OPERATION signs outside them.
Although quite how they were policing that was a bit of a mystery.

He was sat right in front of us second half, did wonder why he was more interested in his GoPro than the game.
-
Seem a few missing today for the Southampton game... no Chukwuemekas, Ramsey, Bogarde, JPB, Iroegbunam... wonder if there'll be a few on the bench for the first team or at least with the first team as cover?
Also, does anyone know what's happened to Ben Chrisene? I haven't seen him in any youth team this season - is he injured?
(https://i.ibb.co/v4wYyJz/image.png) (https://ibb.co/v4wYyJz)
-
southampton leading 2-0 at half-time but it's very much a makeshift Villa team, lots of U18s in there.
-
Thierry Small is one of the goalscorers. The son of Bryan Small and someone who was getting close to the Everton first team, who they didn't want to lose and he made comments about wanting to come to us in the summer. Don't know why we didn't sign him given how good he's meant to be and that left back isn't an area that we're particularly strong in through the youth set-up.

Livramento (sp?) who we were also linked with in that position looks really good too, as seen in MOTD anyway.
-
Anyone know why we have suddenly started playing reserve matches at the same time as first team games That team at Southampton this afternoon inciuded at best four regulars No older Chukwuemeka,Davies or Frith even and yes i have been wondering what has happened to Ben Chrisene ,coverage of our reserve and youth team are pathetic

Smith did mention covid issues so I wonder if a bunch of them had been training with the first team and there's been a postive test or 2 so they've decided not to add thme back to the u23 squad as a precaution. It seems strange otherwise that all of the players in the U23s that you'd expect to see get the chance to train with seniors were all missing.

He's a right back and he would have blocked Kaine-Kessler's path who's well regarded and doing well at Swindon.
On missing players, I'm still waiting to see Shakepoke get any game time after he missed last season with a cruciate having signed him from Norwich's academy.
I may be imagining it but I seem to remember Chrisene picking up a bad injury.

Lots 4-0 to Southampton in academy under 23s yesterday

Pedant alert - I'm pretty sure Thierry Small is a left back and can play left wing'ish.
-
Yeah, he is. I was replying about Livramento as he's a right back.
-
When is our next game in the EFL Trophy? Can't seem to find any mention of it anywhere, but that could just be because I haven't looked properly!
-
Nothing drawn yet.
-
The group stage hasn't finished yet, the draw will be made after that. Using the last season that started and finished as planned as a template, I'd expect Villa's last 32 game to be in early December.
-
What the hell has happened to our club U18 Already two down at Saints after just 16 minutes Well on course to lose to all three Saints team in less than a bloody week
-
Half time and Saints leading 4-2 We seem to be conceding a awful amount of goals at all levels
-
Too many players playing above their age that are not at the required standard.
-
Yes Legion i thought that may be the case ,we have now scored three at Saints trouble is we have conceded 5 Only 53 mins played could be a lot more i fear
-
Finished Southampton U18's 6 Villa U18's 3. 5 goals in ten minutes either side of half time. Chisom Afoka scored twice and Teddy Rowe also got onto the scoresheet for us but more shit news.
-
Is it the case that we're in the first year of a two-year cycle?
-
Is it the case that we're in the first year of a two-year cycle?
Yep using the U18s as any sort of a stick to beat the club with is just being miserable for the sake of it.
-
Is it the case that we're in the first year of a two-year cycle?
I'm not sure its even that. Most of the side in tge last few u23 games have been first year u18 players so 16 and 17 year olds.

Football League Pizza Cup draw is on Saturday and we’ll be away to either Ipswich, Pompey, Bristol Rovers, Charlton or Stevenage the way the groups have finished.
Games on week beginning 29th Nov, so hopefully not the Weds.
-
Hopefully it's Ipswich and our boys put them out. Would teach them for not using Louie.
-
I want us to play Bristol Rovers or Stevenage I haven't been to there grounds.
-
England u19 v Andorra. 3-0 Ramsey and Chucky playing, Chucky has scored.
-
Ramsey subbed off after 72 mins
4 attempts on goal
Fouled 3 times - one of which was a pen that England scored to go 4-0 up.
Laid on England's 3rd goal.
-

Sorry I hadn’t realised there were a few games tonight when I posted the earlier message.. Rovers are out now!
We’ll play away to either Colchester (not Ipswich) Pompey, Walsall, Charlton or Stevenage.

I am assuming from this, in the Papa John’s EFL trophy the AVFC U21s will have a home draw against either Chelsea U21, Arsenal U21, Charlton or Stevenage.
https://www.efl.com/news/2021/november/papa-johns-trophy--round-of-32-draw/
But I could wrong. Will find out just after 2pm.
-
I think it looks like Mk dons,Portsmouth, Colchester or Warsaw
-
Charlton at home then, will that be played at bodymoor?
-
No it’ll be switched to The Valley, I think the only time PL clubs can be at home is if they draw another PL team. And that can only happen in the Semis.
-
Charltons site says that it will be played at The Valley.

That's a shame, I've enjoyed the matches so far. Won't be venturing down to South London on a Tuesday night though I'm afraid.

Yes, think Academy teams are always away, which is fair enough

Very strong team there, only really Aaron Ramsey missing of the kids who are at the club.

That front 6 really have a chance to impress particularly Archer & Philonge-Bidace who i’d presume are going wide where places are up for grabs in senior squad….hope they go for throat tonight

There's loads of them there, reckon they'll be pretty impressed with carney chuk who is a class above this Burnley side. Front 3 all looking very good as well though and Iroegbunam is mostly class but getting caught out at times.
-
Chuk just stole it in our box, played a 1-2 with his bro and drove right to the edge of their box, fucking brilliant play.
-
2-1 now, Jacob Bedeau from a corner. Didn't realise he'd gone there.
-
2-1, former Villa player Bedeau pulls one back for Burnley
-
3-1 another for JPB.
-
Some ropey play at the back has meant they've had chances but we've bossed midfield and looked scary going forward. JPB and Carney Chuk are destroying them and Caleb and Archer are doing a great job of supporting them.
Carney is a ridiculous player (in a good way, he looks like he's playing on his own in a park), we absolutely need to get him signed on a long-term contract and into the first team match day squad, he could save us a fortune.

To answer a slightly different question, if he develops as I expect he'll be the sort of player Seedorf was. By that I mean driving play from midfield but doing so whilst looking like he's out for a jog.

I've got a bad feeling that he'll bugger off somewhere else, based on nothing other than the fact we could have had him signed up by now but he's obviously not convinced otherwise he would have been
-
I imagine he is wanting some guarantees in playing time and a wedge of money
-
I imagine he is wanting some guarantees in playing time and a wedge of money
I agree, which is why I'd have him on the bench regularly now.
-
Couldn't make it up. I registered for VillaTV+ to catch the Gerrard press conference live (like I imagine a few thousand others did).
So, I've just logged-on to use it for the first time since then, to be met with Mr Woodwards's tones informing me that we've just lost the pictures of the live coverage for the U23s game ;D
-

I think he's been on the bench most games this season, so with that in mind I'll start a whip round
-
Would it not have been worth giving Sanson and Davis a run-out tonight?
-
Would it not have been worth giving Sanson and Davis a run-out tonight?
Sanson yes, Davis I'm not sure if he could get into this team.
-
And there's the 4th. Against the run of play really but great play by carney and cam
Goodridge tapped it in after a decent save.
-
Wonder if Gerrard will be watching the U23s tonight?
He is, along with Danks, McPhee, Jedinak, Lange and some more
That's good, hopefully gets to see what talent we have coming through.
-
I think if Smith was still here, Chuk would have gone elsewhere. Having Gerrard and McAllister here may have changed that. If he can become a hybrid of those 2, he'll be some player.
-
Kaine Kesler Hayden
Who is the Villa Player with the best shout of winning a trophy this season? Another good showing last night. Looking forward to seeing him on Boxing Day at Exeter.
Swindon Town player ratings after 3-1 win at home to Hartlepool United
Kaine Kesler-Hayden: 8
The flying wing-back was Town’s primary attacking threat for a lot of the game, and he played his part in the first goal to help kick things off. He exudes confidence, and was one of Town’s stand-out performers.
https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/sport/19737052.swindon-town-player-ratings-3-1-win-home-hartlepool-united/
-
Our Kaine rarely receives reports of a bad game. And as noted, he's the only one of our loanees playing regularly in a winning side. Matty Cash better watch out.
-
Kaine Hayden looks like an outstanding prospect to me, and should fit right in to Gerrard's system. I wonder if he could play left back, as I really like Cash and he would be a more attacking option than Targett.
-
He tweeted a lovely ‘showboat’ clip of himself earlier. I don’t know how to link tweets, soz.

Charlton making changes which hopefully is good news for the young 'uns.
ttps://londonnewsonline.co.uk/charlton-athletic-set-to-be-much-changed-for-efl-trophy-tie-against-aston-villa/
Tbh it seems the lower teams play their reserve sides as much as the Prems do. Saw us at Wycombe back in Aug and their squad numbers added up to about a million.
Both they and Charlton have bigger fish to fry, viz getting into The Championship
-
Guess that means that Carney's in the first team squad for tomorrow night's match.

No younger Ramsey either (or is he injured?)
-
No commentary for this game ?
-
15 mins : 1-0 to Charlton.
-
@academyavfc on Twitter gives a fairly decent running commentary of proceedings.
-
Rhe frustrating thing is the game is available online but only if you register with the charlton tv site. A generic account that just gives access to the efl trophy games would generate money that could just go to the efl without the silkiness of registering on the official site for each opponent.
-
Brilliant counter to make it one each. Thorndike on target.
-
That goal was poor. Right side of defence disappeared and keeper was poorly positioned.
Not putting too much money on seeing Zych, Feeney or Ealing in the first team...
-
Absolutely fucking worst penalty decision. Fuming...
-
What what?
-
Not putting too much money on seeing Zych, Feeney or Ealing in the first team...
You do know Zych is 17 and Feeney only turned 16 in May.

should be in bed !!!
-
I reckon Feeney will be a fantastic player, not sure about Ealing and Zych but they're still very young.
I assume Bogarde is in midfield, anyone know how he's doing?
-
Lost 2-1. A bit disappointing, but Charlton had a number of first team players, so no disgrace.
-
Bugger. Was kind of hoping for a trip to Wembley, it'd be bloody hilarious if we had more supporters go to watch the Villa babbies than Small Heath did for their first team.
-
Seems like we dominated in the second half but could not get the break-through.
-
He tweeted a lovely ‘showboat’ clip of himself earlier. I don’t know how to link tweets, soz.

Obviously the opposition but KKH could be our TAA if he carries on like that for us in the Prem.

Annoying but we'll just have to wait till April 23rd and May 14th.
-
heheh. Top quality camping it up there by the Charlton youngster. Coy and flirty at the same time

Is that Ben Watson who won the FA Cup with Wigan and Irish international Harry Arter? Playing against seasoned pros will have been a really useful experience for our babbies.

Don't forget Gunter...100 caps for Wales
-
Yes, of course.
-
I'm so proud of the boys they played well but Charlton had experience in Ben Watson, Harry Arter and Chris Gunter we can be proud of the boys throughout these EFL Trophy games.
-
Attendance: 1,283 (356 from Aston Villa)
second half was poorer from both sides. highlight was some charlton fans getting kicked out!
-
Hopefully these games will help them in the FA Youth cup.
-

Yeah, you're right, bit harsh, and Charlton were definitely pushing their overage allowance as hard as they could. All of ours were kids, with only a smattering of 1st team experience among them.
-
Can I get an amen for the penalty? Absolute bollox decision from were I was sitting. How did it look on TV?
-
Can't find highlights anywhere.

Their attack was definitely blunted after Stockley went off.
Felt like there were more of us than them...
-
A bit of perspective:
Last night, these 3 played for Charlton against our U21s
Ben Watson - 545 games scored the winner for Wigan v Man City 2013 FA Cup final
Harry Arter 387 games 19 caps for Ireland
Chris Gunter 570 games 106 Welsh caps

Thank you. Will watch that later.
-
Never in a million years was that a penalty! Awful decision from the ref >:(
-
Poor positioning from the keeper for the first one.
-
Was this really a tenner to watch online? That's more/as much as a Prem League Sky Box Office (if that still exists) game, right?!

also why am I paying for Villa TV ?

Fucking hell that penalty is poor, that's an absolute gift, keeper was caughyt out badly or their first though.
-
Terrible goalkeeping for their first. Never a penalty in a million years for their second.

Yes, the Softest Penalty of the Year Award has a late winner!!

Trez in the line up for the U23’s tonight. Good luck to him on his return to action.

1-0 to Villa, Goodridge with the goal after 13mins
This is the team

Is Young, Ashley's son?

2-1 Trez from the spot

Is Young, Ashley's son?
Todd Alcock turned 17 last week. Local lad, holding midfielder.
Jayden Barber 16 full-back, arrived from Fulham in July 2021.
Finley Munroe 16. Signed from Chelsea thus summer. Plays across the back 4.
-
Davis scores, 3-1
-
Blues pull a goal back, 3-2
-
Blues equalise, 3-3 8 mins remain
-
Blues have really come back into the game and have been well on top for the last 10 minutes.
Probably the better siover-all all
-
Honours even at the end.
We were 3-1 up, but ended up hanging on for the draw.
Trez got 60 mins and scored from the spot.
Sloppy defending gifted Blues their goals.
-
Pleasing that Trezeguet got 60 minutes
-
Small Heath got lucky tonight, even without the likes of Bgarde Swinkels Ramsey Archer Carney Chuckwuemeka and Philogene Bidance we were on top until trez and Caleb Chuckwemeka had to go off .That is more than half of our regular side so i am pleased they still could'nt beat us
-
Pleasing that Trezeguet got 60 minutes
He was in his car on Sunday about 10 minutes before kick off at the back of the North Stand, honking his horn to get them to lift the barrier, looking exasperated at the lack of response and probably about to get his arse kicked for being late.
-
I'm glad Trez is back.

Surprised they (you) linked to an article with the click bait of "players allowed to leave" and then the article is just an opinion of well these five could go out on loan, maybe, we think, they could you know, might, etc.
-
Get Cam signed up to a new contract and out on loan at a higher level than he's been before, ideally a championship team as long as he's starting regularly. There must be quite a bit of interest in him now.
-
There is.

I will be following @academyavfc on Twitter for updates
-
Explains why there were some unfamiliar names in the team last night.
-
God competitive first half that. At this point you’d possibly question whether we have the attacking spark of last seasons team but we have a solid looking back line….Feeney looks v good & Chrisene I suspect might be one of the very best in the academy structure
-
Team for tonights game in the FA Youth Cup against Leicester
0-0 at HT.
-
59 minutes.
0-1.
30 mins to pull it back.
-
Final score 0-2 to Leicester
-
Is that it? We out? Or is it some sort of group stage?
-
It’s straight knock out
2nd goal was injury time breakaway after we sent 11 up for a corner….in reality was pretty even but they scored the one quality strike.
Those that played last year Bogarde, Chrisene & Swinkeks + Feeney were the stand outs who you would have confidence to keep developing towards first team squad….the forwards / creative players it wasn’t quite their night
-
Watched Kessler for Swindon v Leyton Orient and he was as bad as the 4-1 defeat would suggest. Struggled to get into the game and was ineffective when he did, possibly trying too hard on the few occasions he had the ball.
That said, such experiences, if channelled the right way, will make him a much better player than bossing it in his own age group.
-
Last night's result probably makes it a lot easier to send some of them out on loan next month.
-
Current U18 crop clearly not as good as last year’s. I expect we are scouring the world for the next batch
-
Need to remember that it's better that there be exceptional individuals who could come through to the first team than to have an overall strong team winning the trophy but doesn't produce players for the first team.
-

last years crop are, mostly, still this years crop. The team the other day was missing 7-8 players who are still eligible but are either with the first team, out on loan or injured.
-

Totally agree, the days of the U23 team being an end in itself are thankfully consigned to history. Any success there matters not a jot if none of them can make a breakthrough.
-
Great goal by Finn Azaz for Newport.
-
I did notice he scored, as well as former Academy player Lewis Kinsella (the best Kinsella).
-
Great goal from Azaz.
Lovely first touch, set-up and finish -all with his right foot.

Game postponed
https://twitter.com/academyavfc/status/1471908491963117572?s=21
Tonight’s #PL2 clash with Sunderland has unfortunately been postponed due to a frozen pitch, after a late pitch inspection.
A rearranged date will be announced in due course.
-
Frozen pitch? behave - it's not got anywhere near freezing today. That's a COVID cover-up.
-
Is it up in Sunderland though?
-
According to my weather app, it's not now nor has been freezing in Sunderland today.
-
It's always freezing in Sunderland.
-
After travelling that far I hope they give the young lads a night out in Newcastle at least.
-
They'll be coming back with more than Covid if they do.
-
Villa U23 must be sick and tired of the North east ,it was only a few weeks ago the match at Newcastle was abandoned after just 28 minutes To get called off at Sunderland less than 20 minutes must be so frustrating
-
Villa U18s v Blose U18s at 11am today apparently
-
Villa U18s v Blose U18s at 11am today apparently
1-1 apparently.
-
No idea on this one. Sorry. Club coverage of this is still hit and miss, apparently.
-
Think Reddin (something like that) scored for us and then they equalised
-
Jobe Bellingham for them.Shirt now retired.
-
Instead of retiring the shirts,it might be a good idea to auction it off to raise much needed funds, should get more then a Messi or Pele shirt, there's got to be some rich Arab or Chinese out there
-
Jobe Bellingham for them.Shirt now retired.
And booked straight afterwards.

hoovering up all the best talent from the local clubs was always part of the plan and we've seena lot of evidence for it over the last 12months (after getting a lst round of european players in before last christmas).

Interesting.
We were linked with him a couple of times before last season so predates Gerrard but he may have watched him in Scotland.
-
Apparently Gerrard had thoughts of bringing him to Rangers and the lad played against them so he knows him. And yes, we tried to bring him in but he chose to stay with Dundee previously.

Sign him and send him straight back on loan for 6, maybe 18-months. That would hopefully keep all parties happy.

Aaron Ramsey off on loan to Cheltenham Town. https://www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-midfielder-set-join-6465162

Nice, I have a soft spot for Cheltenham aswell so I will be keeping an eye on this one.
-
U23s lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough today at Bodymoor
-
In the spirit of Michael Oliver, their first goal was a 'ghost' penalty.
-
In the spirit of Michael Oliver, their first goal was a 'ghost' penalty.
To be fair the referee was a lot closer than watching the live stream but it certainly looked 'dodgy'!
Thought the team was very flat with no urgency, especially with the 'better' players returning from their loan spells.
Although it gave our keeper plenty to do and he showed his ability with a good display.
It brings it home just what it takes to make it, skill and technic are a small part, determination and wanting it more than the next player are more important especially at an early age!
-
Some of the loan players have hardly played and it showed.
We missed Iroegbunam in midfield, where he usually dominates.
-
U23s lost 2-1 to Albion
-
We seem to have snaffled up lots of quality defenders and midfielders for the Academy but, aside from Archer, I don't recall any out and out strikers being mentioned. Do we have any striking prospects coming through?
-
Aside from Barry, Young and Chukwuemeka?
-

Caleb Chuk looks very good and is out on loan at Livingstone now after having a superb half season in the U23s
Brad Young is all energy like Watkins and had an ok half season with Carlisle despite not scoring in the league (got a few in cup games though), hopefully we can find him a better club for the rest of the season
Louis Barry looks a great prospect but it just didn't work for him at Ipswich, hopefully he goes back out and gets some games
Of the 3 I'd say big chuk is the closest to playing but that's to be expected with him a season ahead of them in terms of senior football.
-
I hope there is a highlights package released of yesterday's game. Our goal was sublime. The pass, the perfectly timed run, the control and the strike.

The 'big' is an important point as well. Barry seems so small that's he's going to have to be sbolutely exceptional to make it I reckon.
-
Agreed, caleb's strength has definitely made him stand out in the games I've seen. For me he's the player w all really want Davis to be, great at holding up the ball and bullying defenders but with the all round game to create plenty of chances for others and the natural instincts to score a fair few himself. 7 goals and 5 assists in 9 in the U23 league are incredibly impressive figures for a new signing who's been learning where he fits at the club. I'm really interested in how he does at Livingstone, if he gets anywhere near that record I can see him being heavily involved with the seniors in pre-season.
-
Can/will Louie "fill out"? Would be a shame if he doesn't make it for being too slight. Wasn't that what did for Stephen Cooke 20 years ago ?

Genetically you would think so as his immediate family are generously sized.
-
Caleb came on for Livingston v Dundee on 67 mins. Livingston were 2-0 up at the time.
Got involved in a few passages of play, but it was a scrappy game.
Quite a lot of brutal tackles going in from both sides throughout the game.
Hope he's packed some superstrength allround shin and ankle pads.

Arjan Raikhy, our very own Punjabi Pirlo - off on loan to Grimsby for the rest of the season.
-
U23s are 3-1 up at home to Reading adter about an hour but Kessler went off after about 40mins.
3rd from Barry was a lovely goal.
-
Our other goals from Young and Goodridge.
-
Brad Young adds his second and our forth.
-
Only watched the 2nd half but it was a very good performance going forward but defensively we looked a bit off. However Iroegbunam was at centre half and we had Kessler go off at half time so I'm ok with that.
-
It looked to me like Lindley was playing the other centre-back role, with Tim in his usual place just in front. Where have all the other centre-backs gone, btw?
Marschall clearly has a lot of faith in Tim -he kept on passing the ball out to him when he was surrounded by two opponents!
-
Rumoured to be signing 16 year old Derby County striker Omari Kellyman for around £500k.
-
I've never heard of a Kellyman but I hope it helps the Rams survive.
-
I've never heard of a Kellyman but I hope it helps the Rams survive.
Yes, their plight could easily have been ours
-
Read an article today that said the lad didn't want to come here but the administrators shipped him out.
Anything that brings in a fee for Derby, I suppose.
-
Didn't want to come here? Fcuk off so !
-
Has he actually signed, can't see it anywhere on Pravda.
-
Has anyone seen Kyrie Pierre in action yet, don't recall him being mentioned since he came from Bristol Rovers.
We also signed another kid from them shortly afterwards which escaped our notice. Sounds like the club handled it well with them.

https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2022/february/06/FEATURE--Mark-Harrison-on-the-art-of-an-Academy-loan/
-
Be interesting to see what happens with Caleb up in Scotland , has not had a great start
-
Harrison said: “It’s about maturing the person as much as the player. That’s the whole holistic part of the loan and the development that it gives them. When they come back, you hope that they realise how lucky they are with how they’re supported at this football club.
“People’s perception of loans and whether they’re a success or not, the number one KPI is game time. But if you look at research, the first loans are often the most challenging because it’s a hell of a transition from playing Under-23s football to senior football,” Harrison said.
“What you often find is the first loan doesn’t always give a great amount of game time, but it does give a great amount of learning.”
This point often gets missed. Outwardly we might think that a loan move has failed when a player is out on loan but not getting game time. However, they might be growing up and starting to understand more.
-
Goodness me, the work going into this is extraordinary, and unparalleled in my lifetime. NSWE must be shovelling lorry-loads of cash to do this, with hopefully a payback if our academy bears fruit.
It’s a good time to be a Villa fan.

In a nutshell. It's not really comparing apples with apples to be honest. The best U23 players are now in and around the first team (Ramsey, Chuk, Ironbum etc) and the next best (JPB, Kesler, Archer) are out on loan. I expect therefore that the best U18s have been shunted up to fill the void in the U23s. The goal of the U23s is to produce players for the Premier League, not to win the U23 league.

That was the plan Christian Purslow was talking about a while back as a way of giving U20s experience and not blocking their way with older players who were never going to make the first team on a regular basis.

Absolutely. The downside is that sometimes the inexperience wil lshow and we'll have little collapses like this where we concede 4 in 16 minutes and take a battering. This is, to an extent, all part of the process to learn how big the steps up are and what they need to do to make them.

-
Just went onto the website to see about getting tickets for the Fulham match in a couple of weeks but can't find it anywhere in the tickets section. Has it already sold out or not gone on sale yet?

Think we should put a bid in for 15 year old Palmeiras player Endrick. Looks a bit good

I'm pretty sure Purslow went further than that, and said if your U23 side is full of players in the 20/21/22 age range then you've probably failed. He wanted the best 17/18-year-olds getting experience at that level, because by 20/21 they should be good enough for the first-team squad, because if they're not, then they're probably not good enough for Aston Villa.
I was chatting to a mate about this over the weekend, and it's a shame, but over the next year I expect we'll be saying goodbye to many of the FA Youth cup winning side, even some of those that we had really high hopes for. There's just not enough room in the first-team squad for all of them, even the really promising ones. I'm sure most of them will have decent careers in the game, but as we get closer to our aims as a club at the top end of the league, we will need to be a bit more ruthless with our youth products.
Unless of course we're going to model ourselves on Chelsea, and have a playing squad of 40, but with 15 or so players in their early twenties out on loan at any given time...
-
Re: the chelsea model. An article in today's Athletic.
"The Chelsea “model” is certainly one that Villa have looked closely at and hope to replicate on a smaller scale. They sold academy players Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori over the summer for £60 million and reinvested that money towards their top summer signing, Romelu Lukaku. (That said, Lukaku was returning to Stamford Bridge after being let go seven years earlier.)
Chelsea’s plan, however, is pretty clear: stack their squad high and continue to send out as many players as possible on loan. Temporary moves to the Championship for Mason Mount and Reece James have helped them develop into first-team players and England internationals.
Villa hope similar success stories will follow. If not, raising funds by moving on players for a profit is the best alternative."

Think we should put a bid in for 15 year old Palmeiras player Endrick. Looks a bit good
He’s the next big thing isn’t he?

Mentioned him last week when I heard Tim Vickery's verdict on him.
Need the Academy with Dougie and Phil to get working on this kid. https://twitter.com/Betfred/status/1488270872385245185
I'll be fuming if we don't sign him in summer 2024 as I think he'll be even better than Jeff.

I remember a 10 year-old called Kane Jackson (?) getting a feature spread in either Match! or Shoot! circa 1993, being touted as the best kid player in the world.

I used to teach someone called Kane Jackson. Not that one, though.

Monitoring the reviews that the loanees are getting my 'all academy' team looks stronger every week at the moment. My head says 'stay cool' but my heart says 'golden generation!'
Sinisalo
Kesler-Hayden Feeney Bogarde Chrisene
Iroegbunam
Ramsey Chukwuemeka
Philogene-Bidace Davis Archer

I’d get rid of Davis and add Ramsey minor with Archer as main striker.

What happened to the Revan brothers? I liked the look of both of them.
-
What happened to the Revan brothers? I liked the look of both of them.
Dom Revan is back at Villa after getting injured on loan at Northampton. Seb is on loan at Hereford.
-
I wonder why Dom Revan isn't playing, then?
-
U23's won 2-0 tonight but Tim Iroegbunam got sent off for two yellows, the second five minutes into stoppage time!
-
I watched it. Kerr Smith looked pretty impressive.
-
Watched it, too.
Some very good performances in there, Tim, Chuk and Brad all had good games. Impressed with the two centre-backs, and Taylor Jay-Hart and O'Reilly did lots of good things. Chrisene went off at half-time but wasn't obviously injured.
The ref was unbelievably bad!! He allowed everything to go for the first forty minutes, shirt-pulls and kicking the ball away at dead-balls, then suddenly decided that he was, in fact, going to book players for these offences. One of their players, Gibbs, I think, had already been booked when he hacked down Chuk with the ball nowhere near. Incredibly, no second yellow was produced -****!
Norwich, a 'big' side, are well up the league and had their moments but we defended well despite some unusually dodgy handling from Sinisalo which reminded me of the dark days of Nyland.

U23s playing Southampton at BMH this afternoon. 5mins in and we're already 1 up with reddin scoring after 2mins.
-
1-2 down now, we were on top for the first 10 but have been pretty poor since, just no tempo to our play at all. However Brad Young has missed a couple of really good chances so we could easily be level.
-
They’re mikes better than us but then I suppose they haven’t got their first eleven loaned out all over the plave
-

I still think they’d still beat Boldmere.
-
2-2 now though, Young following up after their keeper pushed a shot away into his path.
A couple of the Villa youngsters are looking pretty good despite us not playing well as a unit. I really like Feeney in particular.
-
finished 2-2, Reddin missed a sitter in the 3rd minute of injury time and looked gutted at the final whistle knowing he should've won it. Probably a fair result though, I think the conditions played a big part.

Tommi O'Reilly has signed a professional contract with us. The management team seem to really rate him.

I don't think so.
Tommi is listed as Irish on the Villa website but I've also seen him listed as English and there seems to be some doubt whether he's eligible to play for ROI. Aaron is a CB who came over from St. Pat's (hope he's as good as our other St. Pat's alumnus) so I assume he is Irish but not Tommi's brother.

Didn’t he sign a long term contract?
-
Cam definitely has.

If Gerrard thinks another season on loan for Cam. I wonder if a season in Germany would benefit Cam, or another season at Preston?
As for Carney, if he decides he wants to go I’d certainly be looking at a big sell on clause.

I agree - we were held to ransom over one greedy twat - lets sort this quickly

There's a lot of people seem to want to cut our nose off to spite our face. Just because he hasn't signed a contract doesn't mean he won't. He may well decide to sign in the end but his agent has him playing brinkmanship. It's part of football now.

Totally agree, I've made a similar point wrt the 'delay' before. Ideally needs to be sorted before next season though.

That's certainly one consideration, but we also need to be careful to strike the right note here. We don't want to be seen to be acting unfairly with him, but also given the number of other promising kids we have, we also can't be too soft with him and his agent otherwise the others might start acting up. He's young, he's promising and he's had good exposure in the first team, probably more than his displays have warranted so far.

Some good performances and link play from some of the youngsters despite the harsh scoreline. Some shooting practice needed before the next match.

Interview with our Aaron Ramsey - https://www.ctfc.com/news/2022/april/ramsey-reflects-on-the-role-of-his-loan-in-his-career/
-
Cheers, OCD, good interview. He articulates well.
This bit had me thinking whether we should look to send our more cultured/flair young players on-loan to leagues more in-keeping with their style of play (are the German/Dutch/Belgian second tiers for example, more technique-based than League One clod-hoppers?).
"One week you go and play MK Dons and you won't have much of the ball and they bop it, then next week you are playing an Accrington Stanley and it's going to be different. When I've been playing under-23s you don't get much of that and even in the Premier League you don't get much of that.
"I've never really experienced this type of football so I am still learning how to get the best out of myself. I want the ball into my feet but in some games with just the way games are it's very hard to demand from players to give the ball into feet because the game is just not that kind of game. Since I've been here there haven't been many games where that's been able to happen but we've been getting the three points."
And imagine this...
Sporting excellence runs in the Ramsey family. His older brother, Jacob, is also in the first team at Villa, while his younger brother, Cole, is a member of Villa's academy in the under-14s squad.
His father, Mark, meanwhile took on a whole different career in professional sport having had over 60 fights as a professional boxer, which included two fights with legendary British boxer Ricky Hatton.
"Dad tried to get us into boxing but it wasn't for us," Ramsey continued. "We still go for fitness and because of what it teaches you with resilience. Our dad wouldn't let us stop pushing and when we set our target it was one thing and he made sure we did it. It has always been that way since.
"My dad used to play football until he broke his leg, and then he started focusing on boxing.
"Cole is in the under-14s. He is doing well. At that age it's a case of going out and playing and enjoying it at that age. I keep telling him to enjoy it because I look back and I think I miss playing at that age because there's no stress whatsoever. You just go out with a ball and play with a smile on your face. Hopefully one day all three of us will be in the midfield at Villa."
-
No problem.
Going abroad could be an option. It's not done any harm for some. Mason Mount is one that went abroad and then had a season at Derby and adapted really well. You see some of these kids play abroad and then go through the same adaptation period that foreign players go through (Jaden Sancho). So a good, technical player could benefit from experience abroad but may need a season in the Championship before we could integrate them into the first team squad.
Well, Jacob's come on leaps and bounds this year. Aaron has captained England at youth levels and was talked of as being better than Jacob until Jacob matured into the player he's been this season. Cole is talked of highly by coaches I know. While there's a long way to go and a lot can happen (even more so with Cole as he's 14), you have to say there's potential for all 3. It's highly unlikely that we'll have a midfield 3 of Ramsey, Ramsey and Ramsey but you couldn't say they can't all have a career in the game.

I think Sancho is a near perfect example of the pitfalls of it, he was a promising youngster who went to germany and made a name for himself as a top player then came back to the premier league and looks totally unprepared for the pace and aggression in English football. I agree that, for most technical players, you need a bit of both, half a season abroad and another half in the championship when they're about 19 would be perfect, especially if they've already had a few games on the bench with the first team and seen how senior training works.
-
Wouldn’t going abroad be more difficult now we are out of the EU? Would youngsters get a visa?

Fair play, Finn.
There are two great video reports on Pravda on two of our successful loanees, Archer and Ramsey-Middle.
They're taken at the Preston and Cheltenham training grounds respectively and the managers of both clubs are also interviewed. Cam and Aaron come across really well, their attitude impresses their gaffers more than anything, it seems. Well worth a watch, decent content from the official site.

Agreed. Just posted the Ramsey one on our FB Page. The Archer one was put up a few days ago.

Not at all, he went out on loan on the same day he signed I think, it was definitely reported together.

Yep, straight in and straight out again!

But did him far better than playing in Under 23 games.

Agreed.
A shame he didn't even get the chance to stretch the shirt...

For first team games I always park by Mansfield School/Park on Albert Rd.
it’s a 5-10 min walk.
There are houses on one side only, so I should imagine parking would be quite easy.

Thanks for these replies, lads.

In the end, we parked behind the North Stand after all, but thanks for the advice anyway.
-
Delaney has got the chop according to the Athletic.
-
Interesting. U23 record has been pretty dire this season but it seems rough when the best players are all out on loan. Maybe they think he doesn’t fit the culture and style Gerrard is looking for?
-
Under 18s drew 2-2 at Small Heath. We led twice and Villa players scored all four goals.
I know the main thing is producing players for the first team, and we have a good few youngsters out on loan but, nevertheless, it has been a pretty woeful season, results-wise. Five wins, five draws, sixteen losses.
-
I'd rather it functions as it does now, producing first team players for Aston Villa, than it used to when it was all-conquering but was an end in itself.
-
I'd rather it functions as it does now, producing first team players for Aston Villa, than it used to when it was all-conquering but was an end in itself.
Exactly. If the best young players are in and around the first team, that's much more promising than them romping home in the kids league.
-
Agreed. So why sack Mark, then?
-
It seems a very strange decision if true.
As others have pointed out the idea of the U18's and U23's is to bring players through who have potential to play for the first team. Given the numbers that are now in the first team squad, or who are on loan in different divisions is proof it has been working.
The U23's is more like an U18 team given the age of a lot of the players.
-
If Mark Delaney is deemed not good enough then surely Carla Ward will be following in his footsteps As soon i heard Small Heath women had failed to keep a single clean sheet this season away from home we knew what was coming Even the goal we conceded was a blunder by the keeper who makes quite a few of them
-
I went to Monday's U23 game, where Villa lost 2-1 due to a couple of goalkeeping blunders.
It was a very young side again. To make the point, Kayden Young was the best player on the pitch, scoring Villa's goal and beating the full-back whenever he wanted to.
At the w/end, he scored one of the goals in the 2-2 draw with Blues in the U18s match.
If this is the club's policy to really push the young players then that's fine. But when you send out so many, how is that compatible with consistently good results?
-
Does anyone know what has happened to Lamare Bogarde ? i have not seen anything about him since around christmas time, did he go out on Loan
-

I was wondering about Bogarde as well. Haven't heard anything about him since he went back to the Netherlands to play for the Dutch youth team along with Swinkels. Swinks came back but I don't know about Bogarde. Dominic Revan has fallen off the radar, too.

https://www.englandfootball.com/articles/2022/Jun/17/england-mu19s-squad-named-for-UEFA-U19-EURO-in-Slovakia-20221706
Carney, Tim Iroegbunam and Aaron Ramsey named in the UEFA U-19 Euro Finals squad.
3 group games, all 7pm ko, all televised on BBC iPlayer:
Sun 22 June - Austria
Wed 25 June - Serbia
Sat 25 June - Israel
-
Interesting that two of them already play for Dortmund and Juventus.
Brentford are doing well to have a couple in there saying they scrapped their youth system and have only just re-introduced it.
-
Just to correct my error on the dates
Sun 19 Austria
We'd 22 Serbia
Sat 25 Israel
The heat's got to me.
-
That's good news.
At least there's something to watch with some Villa involvement.
I can't say that any of the other names in the squad are jumping out at me though!
-
Alfie Devine (Tottenham Hotspur) is decent. Bought from Wigan (?) for big money. Dan Scarlett scored a shed full of goals for their U18 a year or so ago. Liam Delap is quality.
-
Wimbledon Crawley and Portsmouth for our under 21s for the EFL Trophy next season.
-
Will hopefully do all three.
