His mom and sister used to sit in the seats in front of us in the old upper Trinity. They were very vocally supportive of him, and deeply annoying.

Good article.

Great piece, but:

I never got it with Collymore, and I'm not being revisionist. I didn't want us to sign him. I wanted us to get Andy Cole, who at that point still hadn't totally convinced at Man Utd, and we had been linked with

For me, Dalian was a better player.

That was a good read. I liked Stan when he played for us and it is a pity we didn’t get the best out of him. I also liked his “Call Collymore” show on talksport, really good. I’ve heard many of the stories about him, some true, some urban myths I guess but he’s still one of my Villa favourites

That summer we signed him the expectation and season tickets went through the roof. Massive excitement from Villa fans with a ‘Welcome to Villa’ at the stadium in that season’s blue and white away kit.
He hadn’t settled at the 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' but we wanted to believe that Roy Evans couldn’t get the best out of him and took a 1.5m loss. “He’s the missing piece of the jigsaw” ran around B6.
I remember the 4-1 against the spuds which was a glimmer and him hitting the post v Cov that could’ve made it -2-2 and we lost 4-1.
Then Gregory started to lose patience and so did the fans.
I’m sure one of the lines coming out the club was something like “What has he got to be depressed about? He’s on £25k a week, the bloke in the street struggling to pay his mortgage and feed his kids has a reason to be depressed!”
At the Bolton FA cup semi final I think, at half time the announcer reads out the scores and mentions Collymore has been injured for the foxes and a huge cheer went up.
The saddest thing is he could have written himself into Villa legend if life had taken a different turn.
