Title: Aston Villa v Wolves Pre-Match Thread - Saturday, March 6th - 5.30pm
Post by: Toronto Villa on March 04, 2021, 12:39:10 PM
May as well get this going as Saturday isn't far off. Need to bounce back. Would love to see Jack return but it might be too early. Still we have the players to win this but we have to get into Wolves quickly and make a fast start. Wolves have improved of late so I think a draw is a likely outcome. I'll go for 1-1

Well, looking on the bright side, just as we tend to follow a good win with a shit performance and a loss, we also tend to follow a shit performance and a loss with an improved showing and a win. On that basis:

The mighty Villa 2 Dogheads 0.

I look forward to joining you bemoaning how we got beat by Spud Head, but then also how important a six pointer beating Spurs was.

I was more worried about last night than this one and with Wolves likely to give us more space in which to play we should see a better performance.

3-1

1-0 home win, Wolves haven't looked like they have much of a goal threat for most of the season.

Despite defending Elmo pre Leicester, he’s looked out of his depth the last few games and I have nothing against him. Think he’ll struggle to contain Netto, who for me is a good player. Targett was off the pace last night, but the Targett of the rest of this season will hopefully deal with Traore.
I agree largely with Ads team, and think Luiz has had enough of a rest and Sanson needs a run.
Just worry despite his iffy form, without Traore, Watkins will have even less support up front. But don’t think we can afford to play Traore And Barkley for this, one or the other.
Think we might lose or draw.
2-0 villa (Watkins, Barkley).

Sanson was rubbish last night when he came on. Luiz appears to be benefiting by not playing last night, there's a reason why he has been dropped twice recently ...

Traore for me should be the one to come out. Poor for weeks now. A lot depends on if Jack is back, if not then maybe Barkley to be given another go. Ramsey to maybe step out.

There are not many from last night that don't deserve to be dropped.
Traore, AEG and Elmo were the pick of the bunch.
Only Mings, Konsa and Martinez come out with any credit.

So Luiz Trez and Barkley should start.

Konsa is the football equivalent to a Rolls Royce.
He looks an absolute class act and its a shame his brilliant effort late on last night didn't go in.

2-1 Villa. Watkins 2, Netto for them.

Midfield selection very much a case of best of a bad bunch at present. I’d go with Marv , SJM and Dougie. Front 3 of Bert, Anwar and Olly. I’d be pleasantly surprised if we win this one.

I see that Wet Spam are keeping a very close eye on Tammy Abraham. We need to keep tabs on him closely. With Chelsea likely to sign another striker, in the summer plus they’ll have Barkley back as well, we could do worse than get Tammy back. Ollie could then play wide left for us. Sounds good on paper anyway!!

Can't see this being a classic.

Wolves have picked up a bit recently apart from Man City in the week but have still been fairly ordinary.

Not sure where the goals are coming from for us right now.

0-1

That could work, not necessarily with Tammy, but with Ollie out a bit wider. He's got everything you need in any of the wide attacking roles, eg hard work, pace, skill on the ball and eye for goal. He'd be much better there than any of the other three I reckon.

Didn’t our Ollie convert to a central striker from a wide player? Tammy on the middle, Jack tucked in behind, Traore bombing down the right and two deeper midfield ball winners; SJM and Morgan. I like it

It's hard to know at the moment. Wolves seem to set up to defend and counterattack so maybe Luiz will be better to help unlock them? Centre of midfield seems to be the one area where we've got good options, but Dean seems to be struggling a little bit to find his best combination and get a tune out of them all.

Oddly that's how I'd assumed we were trying to set up long term ... all the attacking players we've brought in seem to be able to play in a couple of positions. Can imagine in the future we'd have a front 3 of something like Ollie/Tammy/Bertie with Jack just behind them. Then those 3 rotate positions every so often and Jack bombs around in a free role, looking space & causing general havoc. Opposition wouldn't have a clue what was going on.

I am struggling after the shock of Sheffield to know what team I would go with. The players that did very badly AEG Elmo and Traore should lose their place but I doubt we have another Right Back.
Luiz should play because he is likely to be Fresh. I do not believe we should ever have Traore and Barkley starting together because neither offer anything without the ball.
I am not as adverse to Davis as some but I worry he will break down getting off the bus.

He should have gone out on loan. He needs a season playing regularly, firstly to see if he can stay fit, and secondly to find out if he does actually possess any sort of a goal threat.

I've got a good feeling about this. On Wednesday, I needed a result. I'd had a couple of really shit days at work, and we missed out on a house, so I think my negative vibes got to the players. But now I'm having a really good day at work, it's Friday, and I've got my microchipping vaccination booked for tomorrow morning. Enough positivity there for at least a dozen people, which I hope I can amplify if I can pick up a decent 5G signal in the house.

Right, back to it, haven't got time to stand around chatting to the likes of you lot.

We can't go another game with Nakamba, McGinn and Ramsey. We'll have enough of the ball and field position to need players that can do something with it. For me that means getting in Luiz and Sanson and possibly Barkley.

                    Luiz       Sanson

El Ghazi              McGinn               Traore

Apart from set pieces when Mings and Konsa are up, we can not afford to just lump the ball into the box and hope for the best. Coady etc will think it's Christmas. Patient, on the ground build ups with a calculated final pass is required. Would like to see Traore's trickery in the box (great at making a yard for himself) and be some support for Watkins. McGinn needs to be hovering just outside the box for a lay back, we are not utilising his shooting skills as much as we should. Therefore:

Trez           McGinn         Luiz          Barkley

               Traore               Watkins

Play a 4 4 2

Trez in for his better workrate and habit of popping up at the back post. Gives us more options in and around the box which is what we need in the absence of Jack. If Barkley not producing, El Ghazi on at half time.  :)

Never seen such a low key pre match thread. Perhaps a few others like me ,whilst acknowledging a very decent season, haven’t quite got the nervous anticipation as it looks like a mid table finish, which in itself is creditable, but pre Burnley 2nd half offered a tad more.

Still feel ridiculously deflated after Wednesday.

A 4-1 home win like another 5.30pm kick off a few years ago when both teams were in the Championship would be VERY nice: I still remember that incredible claret sunset providing a backdrop to proceedings.

I've woken up from that pleasant dream now... :'(

I like the idea of trying Traore closer to Watkins. It's not working at all for him on the right wing and Elmo isn't going to overlap like Cash. Without Cash and Grealish I think we need to look at a different set up. Trez on the right would provide us with a bit more balance and allow us to take maybe a risk or two in the middle. Nakamba is limited but I don't think he did much wrong v Sheff Utd, nor Ramsey for that matter. I'd probably keep Nakamba in and give Targett a bit more licence to push forward.

I've always quite liked the idea of Bertie through the middle playing just off Oliie, I think it might work well. As for Trez, I'd agree but he's also a perfect sub on 70 mins as well. It might be a day to start him though, he deserves a game.
