Title: Burnley v Aston Villa pre-match thread - Wednesday, January 27th, 6pm
Post by: Toronto Villa on January 24, 2021, 09:43:37 PM
This won’t be easy as they look to be turning things around a bit. Back to back wins and two clean sheets. But we have more than enough to come away with a result. SJM coming back in gives us additional energy and hopefully we also have Sanson signed by then, but probably too soon for this game. I suppose he could make the bench. But I’ll go for a solid 2-0 win - Ollie and Jack.

They seemed to have turned a bit of a corner, but we owe it ourselves to run in a few after the number of chances in the recent 0-0.  However, I reckon we'll just about squeeze a 1-0 win.

A really difficult one, you dont normally win two consecutive aways at the same ground.  Cold, poxy every other negative can be said about Burnley and Turf Moor.  My take on it though is if Lincoln City and Wimbledon as non league clubs can win there then so can we.

Going for a 1-1 draw lol

Live fairly close to Burnley and have friends who are STH's. But despise their '2 big strikers and let's lump it up to them approach' that Dyche has never tried to change - Think we dodged one there if he was ever considered to manage us. Despise Rodriguez after his handball goal against us. Haven't forgiven Ben Mee for his scissors tackle on Wesley that has already resulted in him missing over 12 months - Was there on NYD last year and couldn't believe the assistant referee never flagged or alerted the referee to the illegal nature of the tackle. Hoping for at least a 2-0 win, but first goal critical. Admit I think Taylor and McNeil are decent players for them.

We battered them everywhere but the scoreboard at Villa Park. We know what they will do, defend the 18 yard box with full backs tucked in. Midfield sitting on top of them. Direct ball up to Barnes and Wood and play from there. McNeil is a fine player but this is a spirited but very limited team.

Grealish running at them caused a lot of problems and that rather than crosses from our full backs will be key. Don't think Jack is quite back to his best since the covid break so that might be a worry. First goal will be crucial. Get that early on and we should have enough.

Burnley coming into form, but so are Villa. Honours even I think. Hopefully a higher scoring draw than last time, I'll go 2-2.

I think it’s about time we started making matches must win games.

We played really well there last season.

Same principle as then, we score twice we win this.

The VP game was incredibly frustrating and can see a similar game given how well they're defending atm. I think I said after that game we really needed Barkley as Burnley leave plenty of space between their midfield and defence and they're not as athletic as many prem teams given someone like Westwood is in there so Barkley could be a match winner in this, think he scored a few past them playing for Chelsea.

Will go for 1-1 though.

We should have enough quality and enough fuel in the tank to win this one. But it’s Villa, so not getting too excited. I felt the same way about the Newcastle match and we didn’t have to move above a canter for that one. Hopefully my Pessimism is similarly misplaced for this one. It is difficult to get out of that mindset after so many years of dross. I think it’s just habit really to think that way. Does seem a bit to me still though that games where you first think we’ll win this, don’t often seem to pan out that way. Anyway jinxes laid- I’ll go for a 2-0 Villa win. Traore and Barkley.

Lat year , the game up there we played well and lost two players for the rest of the season and this season also.
Jammy bastrds at VP, so we should get revenge
But grim place to go to , would not be upset with draw.

We've only had Tierney twice in the last two and half seasons, for the Championship final, and the home defeat to Chelsea last season, neither of which I can recall having anything especially contentious.

He does seem a bit card happy though, with 51 yellows and 3 reds in his 13 Premier League games this season.

Yes they beat Liverpoo but we are better than Liverpoo at the moment 0-2 . .

Some lovely people in Burnley. A place that voted 2/3rds leave, a place where any UKIP/BNP chancer can count their votes in thousands not hundreds. Over the years I've gone to watch the Villa in some right shit hole towns, but Burnley takes the prize for ticking the most boxes for shit hole place with shit house people. From 1974 and an FA Cup defeat when it was run like a totalitarian regime by the anti-semite Bob Lord to a 2004 DOL surrender in the league cup it's always been shit in Burnley. Generally speaking I've always preferred away days north rather than south but in the case of this bunch of kit stealing oiks I'll make an exception. The foods shit and the pubs are dire if you make it out of them alive. If we ever get back to being able to watch football live it wont be on my list for a re-visit. John Cooper Clarke was right. l'll tell you now and I'll tell you firmly, I don't ever want to go to Burnley !

Win. 0-4

Watkins with a couple, Jack to dance through for his, and McGinn or Luiz to let fly from 25 yards.

Rodriguez to fluff a sitter and Mee to get his marching orders after lashing out through frustration at Watkins, Grealish and Traore running rings round him.

Yes, Rioch's last game before he went to Derby. Derby were near the top of Division 1 and we were struggling in Division 2, so you can't blame Rioch for going. Burnley were also going well in Division 1 and my memory is that we gave them a good game. Fletcher scored the one goal.

I used to know quite a few Burnley lads, they even took me on a football tour to Belgium with them once - they were good guys.

Anyway, hopefully we’ll smash them into next week, and while I would never normally wish an injury to a player, I’ll make an exception with Ben Mee who’s enjoyed the last 13 months of his career , while the player he knobbled hasn’t even got back on the pitch yet.

I was chatting to my dad the other week and in a general conversation about football it came up about an old mate of his who had tipped him off a few years ago about his grandson who was about to turn professional with Man City. Turned out the player was Ben Mee but I didn’t have the heart to tell him my views of the player.

UTV and FTF. 3 points any way you like.

John Cooper Clarke was the first person to congratulate me on getting engaged to Mrs SE. Long story!

Were you the winner in a bizarre love triangle?

I'd bring McGinn back for this, as I felt we could have done with his pressing and ability to turn over ball higher up the pitch.

These will sit in and smother the ball 15 yards from goal. When it does open up, we need quick turn over to find the gaps.

Martinez

Targett
Mings
Konsa
Cash

Dougie
McGinn

Barkley

Grealish
Watkins
Bertie

This will be the team barring any unknown injury or illness.

There's absolutely nothing to fear from Burnley. We know what they do.

Still think it might be a draw tho. 1-1.

Burnley are starting to do what they do every season. Look like relegation certs, then started stringing some meat and two veg battling wins together including against some good sides. They’ll once again be well clear of the drop.
I think this and Southampton are two tough games, if we can come away from them with 4 points it will probably be decent.
We can win up there, but I just hope our flair players like Traore, Barkley and El Ghazi if he comes on, fancy the proverbial cold, wet January night in Burnley.
I would bring McGinn back as well. As well as nakamba did, McGinn does drive us forward more and takes more risks and we were definitely lacking a bit of his energy 2nd half against Newcastle. Otherwise, as you were.
2-0 villa (Watkins, Traore).

Furthest North I’ve been for football is Celtic for a pre-season match v Fulham; Newcastle for a league match with Aussie mates against fuck knows who it was - might’ve been Everton (?) and OT for the Liverpool semi-final and weirdly the game between Utd and Coventry when David Busst had that appalling injury. London’s been my main place for Villa away matches.

I do worry about Jack in this game - still one yellow away from a ban, correct?  They kicked him all over Villa Park the other week, I'm sure they will try again and it's down to him not to react.  Barkley needs to have a big game, physical lad he can mix it up with them.

He's right though isn't he? I mean a similar point has been made by other pundits that the no goal gave us the point to survive.

I think that we are all aware that had the 'goal' been rightly given and we'd gone 1-0 down that the ref had been given unique dispensation to end the game at that point.

It's tough for us that the right to come back having gone a goal down which is habitual in football was going to be denied us but there you go.

The game would have been lost and so we were handed survival by the Premier League.

An absolute disgrace as they say.

It's not linear though. How do we not know that if the goal hadn't stood, that it wouldn't have led to a greater effort on our part to get an equalizer and maybe even gone onto win it. It's pretty small minded to see things in such simple terms.

First goal is always key. When you consider Burnley have only scored 10 goals all season, it would be we score first, we won't lose.

We need to be at them and swarming them with quick ball. They were an abomination at Villa Park and how they didn't get on the end of a 4 or 5 goal hammering is a mystery.
