Nakamba starting surprises me, guess we'll give Doug licence to be a bit more box to box.

As you were apart from that.

Saint Maximn on the bench for them.

I am surprised El Ghazi doesn't start. He finished last season well and started this season well. He also has a goal or two in him.

I did hear that El Ghazi was one of the ones who had Covid. Might explain his absence at least? Energy levels might not be up to where they were yet...

If not, it’s a bit harsh on him.

This has to be the biggest madness of the day....

Dean Smith on touchline ban: "I'll be in the directors' box and I'll be wired up to Shakey and JT who will be a yard away from me, such is the madness of rules. I can coach in the mic but I can't shout instructions on to the pitch. The three lads will be doing that for me."

A win tonight would really set us up for Burnley to go and take the game to them and make a push on the top 6 places. It's 8.00pm, that's our kick off time this season. Let's do a number on them and put the game to bed and Bruce out of his misery. Come on you Villa boys.

For me this has a feel of being one of those games we should win, so probably won’t. I’d love to see another performance like at Palace and back to winning ways. I’d take a scrappy 0-1 in all honesty. Haven’t really seen anything of the Geordies this year, but my stereotypical thoughts on Bruce expects him to set up defensively and try and try to snatch one. Presumably he still tries to do that?

You'd take a scrappy 0-1? Fuck that we can beat these. The Geordies are up in arms about Bruceball. They're even using our Bruceosaurus jibe which Sunderland fans used before us. Everywhere he goes it's like groundhog day.

With no AEG or Trez in the starting line up who do we think is going to play on our right? My guess is Traore with Jack on the left.

I think it’s that. Smith brought Ramsey on for Barcklay on Wednesday, so might of been a bit gung ho, with just Luiz as defensive minded in the middle. Will miss McGinn tonight, but hopefully will have enough for this lot.

If you're talking about the bit I think it was about a yard away from being one of the best bits of play I've seen for years, 4-5 1-touch passes in a row and Watkins was away if the last one had beaten the defender.

They do realise that you can not be offside if you are behind the ball when it is played,
When Targett put the cross in Ollie looked slightly ahead of him(the defender) I thought at that point he would of been given off? Especially when you look back at the goal he had chalked off at West Ham. I honestly don't know anymore.

Behind the ball means the 'edge' of the ball closest to the goal so that's where you'd draw the line and from the lines on the grass Watkins looked like he was behind that.

It doesn't matter.  He wasn't 'gaining an advantage' and then the ball came off the last defender.

I have not get this good about Villa since that season under O’Neill when we nearly cracked the top 4.

I think it was written at the start of the season - might even have been written by Dave - that as a Villa fan, sometimes you get the feeling that something special is brewing. And I believe it now more than I did pre-season. And I had that feeling then!

Half time. Great half, and we haven't really got into our top gear yet. We could really funeral these.

I think if we got a third then we should think about resting up the likes of Jack who are in yellow card trouble. Delighted for Watkins, was he offside and interfering with play from Schars touch? Thought Traore was useless until his timber leg cracked in the second off the bar. He is a freak of a player.

Back five have been solid, Nakamba doing his job fine. Was disappointed with Luiz, Barks and Traore up to his goal. Other two look very sharp.

Newcastle are dreadful. Andy Carroll stealing a living up front. Their keeper bottling the challenge for the first.

Lots to like. I just think from 60 yards out we are the best team to watch in this division. May not win it - or even finish top 6 - but nothing to fear this season and everything to look forward to with an even better upwards trajectory

I quite like that Bert is a placer rather than a blaster when it comes to shooting.

Given how good modern defenders are - you need savvy placement.

To be fair though, Newcastle have had a bit of a go, they have had good possession and we have had to defend a lot of crosses.

We are playing with the intensity of a training ground kickaround - because there's no need to put any more than that into it.

Not now there isn't. Earlier I was a bit concerned one of their hoofs into the box may actually result in a goal. I'd like to see us go up a gear or two and build up a healthy goal difference. I'm sure Watkins wouldn't mind scoring a few more too. Practice makes perfect.

Fair enough, I had completely forgotten about West Brom. Which is probably for the best. And I was a bit harsh on Wilson as I forgot he played for Newcastle, was focused more on Carroll (who did used to be good, but his day is passed) and Almiron, who I have previously gone on record as identifying as the worst "luxury creative" player in the league (since superceded by Pepe at Arsenal).

.. was focused more on Carroll (who did used to be good, but his day is passed)

You say that, but apart from that one ninety minutes against us - was he?
Absolutely. When he first came through at Newcastle he had a good touch, workrate and bullied centre-backs for fun. Then he went to Liverpool and whatever might have been, went. Then it turned out his hamstrings made Giggs and Owen look like beasts of physical preparation and that was it.

*Students of rhetorical literary devices might be thinking that 'the Toon' is an example of macrocosmic synecdoche whereas I think it is an example of metonymy (where something represents something else that is related to it).

If it was a case of Wilson or Watkins then we got far and away the better deal, similar as goal scorers but Watkins brings so much more on top.
