We will have to be significantly better on Sunday because Southampton will be no pushover. They beat Everton comfortably in the end. We will need to be better on the ball and way better off it. They have a good midfield and we will need to limit Ward Prowse as he makes them tick. Up front they have one of the best forwards in the league in Ings and even Adams now is contributing. This will be hard.
I’ll go for a win though. We have plenty of ability. One bad game doesn’t change that. Depending on fitness I can see Dean keeping this same XI. 2-1 to us.
-
Darren England in the middle and Chris Kavanagh on VAR. About time we had a penalty I think.
-
I can see the same starting 11 too, but what is the point of a squad if we dont shake it up some times. Is Barkley fully fit ?
-
This will be an interesting early barometer I reckon. Was our early season form just a flash in a pan? Can Smith and Co learn from their mistakes? I think we'll put things right, keep it tight and win 2-0.
-
Bogey team bang in form, they're a pain in the arse. 0-2.
-
3.2
-
They’ll try and play a high tempo, similar to Leeds. Be interesting to see how our defence does against two out and out strikers.
Work hard and get the basics right then we should create enough chances to win.
-
I think they are better-organised with a better "in-game" coach unfortunately. And Ings is just something else. 1-2
-
An abysmal recent lague record against this lot since 2012.
P 10 W 1 D 3 L 6 F 10 A 24
Plus a 2015 league cup defeat thrown in for good measure.
Bring back Lionel Martin and Dave Rudge !
-
Read somewhere they’ve won almost 1 in every 2, 16 from the last 34, impressive record. Good result against Everton, they also drew with Chelsea away. They are beatable though and it will be doubtful if they’ll finish top 8. Better away from home but not sure how much that matters at the moment.
They will play similar high tempo press to Leeds with two very good forwards. We’ll have to be on the money to win, I’ll say 2-2.
-
We seem to be a very streaky team under Smith.
This is a big test to see exactly were we are.
-
It always seems to be the games we expect to win (and most of us did with Leeds, especially after hearing that 2 key players were out) that we come crashing down to earth on
I think tight game and our first draw
1-1
Oh and minus any injuries - same XI as we were the better team up till they scored - it was the in game management that was left wanting
-
They looked really good against Everton. I think we will struggle to get anything sadly. Their coach seems pretty good and ing s and jwp would walk into most teams in the country.
-
2-2. Would be inclined to make a tactical switch and play Nakamba rather than Trezeguet. Need to stop them playing through midfield as easily as Leeds could also need to put our foot in a bit to stop their rhythm.
Ings was great at our place last year and imagine he will be again.
We've got enough going forward to cause them problems too though.
Should be a good game.
-
Nakamba - yikes!! Maybe Elmo...on the right.
-
Tricky.
I'll tek a draw.
1-1
-
They always beat us and always have. Le Tissier, Mane, Long, now Ings. We've a long list of torturers.
As others have said, they take a similar approach to Leeds and we didn't match up well to them, albeit Southampton will go two up top. I'm not feeling particularly confident to be honest but I trust this Villa to bounce back a lot more than I trusted the Villa of 12 months ago. 1-2 but I hope I'm wrong.
-
I hope to almighty that we don't start shitting our britches because of our last result. Attack is our best form of defence, we just need to find a way of ensuring our front five don't get bogged down.
3-2 us in a pulsating, nerve-shredding game.
-
5-1, fuck 'em.
-
We looked really good against the world champions. We were bang in form before we played Leeds. We always lose at Fulham. We were awful last season against Leicester. None of that matters. 2-0.
-
1-1. Mings n ings.
-
Villa win. Rideout hat trick in less time than Mane’s
-
2-0 Villa but I’m disgusted that for the third match in a row we’re pay per view.

There are plenty of alternatives.
-
2-0 Villa, a comfortable, no nonsense, straightforward, no squeaky bums whatsoever win.
-
We are going to have to be right on it here.

Bore draw 0-0

Worse than what Gabby did to provoke Leeds. How dare they !
Seriously though, that's great. Imagine a session in the Bartons with these boiz.

I won’t pay it and I have an alternative but there are fans out there who don’t.

It doesn’t make you a bad person if you do subscribe.

Draw 0-0 or 1-1

A nervous 6-6

We will squeak it 1-0

We’ve had a bit longer to recover after the last games. I think that will be important if we’re going down the O’Neill road of picking the same team come what may. We’ll be alright I reckon. Tight win 1-2. Martínez to dig us out of the shite.

Who said we are going down the route of picking the same side 'come what may'?

I think you'll find robbo1874 did.

I view it more as the Saunders road of picking the best available 11 come what may.
-
The side picks itself at the moment. The only question is what time Traore comes on.
-
I reckon we will lose 0-2, always seem to play rubbish against Southampton.
-
We'll know the tempo has to be better - they are a good side. 1-1.
-
win please Villa :)
I will go 3-1 Villa win after going a goal down. It is about time we came from behind to win a game.

Need to score first, the second, then third, then fourth.

i just did Clampy. That’s what it looks like.

I don't see too much evidence of that. I just saw a manager picked a side who won their previous 4 games on the trot.
-
I can see Traore coming in. Trez has worked his bollocks off but he wasn’t himself working that side against Leeds. That’s the only change I see unless Barkley needs a rest and CH replacing him.
-
When it comes to quality, two evenly matched teams. Side that works the hardest wins. We will learn from Leeds match and edge it 2-1. Ollie on the score sheet. :)
-
This is another very tough match up - Southampton are well drilled, also very fit, and will certainly rock up full of confidence from their past three results.
I think a lot will depend on our attitude to the Leeds result and, the first goal - if it’s for them I see a 2-0 defeat, for us and I see a 3-1 win.
Fingers crossed
-

Traore was shocking when he came in and is another one who offers very little without the ball. I think Trez will be dropped alright but I really hope it's for Hourihane (or even Nakamba) and we change the shape of our midfield accordingly. If we set up like we did against Leeds I can only see another defeat.
-
Set up like we did against Leeds it then depends on Southampton having the fitness and tactical ability to continually expose us. Not so sure they will. They set up like they did against Spurs and it will be 6 by half time. I think it will be tight, maybe our first draw of the season.
-
2-1 Villa win.
-
Have bad vibes. Anything Leeds can do to us Soton can do likewise. 1-3.
-
Villa to bounce back. 4-1, Ollie only scores in threes and will do so here.
-
We need McGinn and Barclay to be at it against Southampton - neither were against Leeds.
That will Jack more time and space.
Olly's due a goal.
-
Same team but Barkley to play a bit deeper

and I think he’ll pick it again even though we lost the last one
I hope he does anyway
-
Even if we had a poor start we would be hoping to get something from this game a 2:0 win Watkins and McGinnis.
-
We have to attack Southampton. If we sit deep they have too much talent to take advantage. They will play a 4-4-2, so we need to overwhelm their midfield with an attacking 5 and provide good supply to Ollie. Something that has been lacking since Liverpool.
-
We are very much due a win against Southampton. Make it so.
-
Villa to show the fabled bouncebackability of Iain Dowie's wetttest of wet dreams. 4-2. Jack (18), Watto(24), Trez(56), and Jack(87). All good in the hood and Deano to snap up the poisoned chalice that is the Manager of the Month award.
I love drinking.

First draw of our season, 1-1.

This has probably been posted elsewhere on here, but my 15 quid PPV fee is going towards this little villan’s cause... might be an option for some of you too, who point blank refuse to succumb to PPV bollocks....

Saints always bloody turn up against us - let’s hope the trend ends today.

We managed to beat Fulham earlier in the season for the first time since the Moon Landings, so there's hope!
I reckon a 1-1 draw though! John McGinn for us.

Thank you for posting that, mate. Will definitely be donating.

Can't see a match thread yet, anybody started one?
-
Will be a decent test this one as they beat us pretty comprehensively in both games last season. If I remember correctly from the game at Villa Park, they pushed their full-backs right up which allowed them to crowd the central area of the pitch and dominate us in there. Hopefully won't be the case today.
-
I never enjoy playing these lot ,they always seem to play well and no doubt the old Sandwell Town player Long will come on and get his usual goal against us
