I'm told that Cooper being out and Ayling in central defence is A Very Bad Thing for them.

I don't know who either of those people are, so no idea if it's true or not.

Come on Villa, time to go one better than 30/31 - win (at least) 5 in a row, become League Champions, and beat our record for most goals in a season.

FTDLF, 10-0. Watkins 4, Konsa 3, Grealish 2, McGinn

Will it not be Koch and Struijk as CBs for them? We break past their initial press and we'll hammer them I think.

Tough night for our full backs though.

Yeah it's basically Ayling at CB and this Sturjik guy at DM. And one of the full backs out of position so that will be their weakness tonight.

Have some good players on the counter attack, Costa started well for them this season.

Have I ever mentioned that I hate Leeds?!
I remember the first time I went to Elland Road: a dark December day in 1975: it was frightening – the locals were just horrible and the local plod did nothing as they tucked into us away fans. I was glad when we conceded and eventually lost 1-0.
Always disliked them with a  passion after that.

Similar to Leicester game then, they had most of the pressure in first 20 minutes.

Leeds do play like they're on steroids but think there's been a decrease in most of their second halves this seaso while we've tended to get stronger during the games.

Yes, and you know what you;re getting against Leeds: 110%, all-out front-foot football. Not many teams have dealt with it yet - Wolves, for example, were all over the place in the first half.
It may not look pretty, but Villa have to roll with it, keep competing and strike when they can; in the first half. Come the 2nd, we do need to ensure we can move up the gears.

Not, however, as utterly shit as Bamford, who the RMC commentators were speculating might be more suited to the Prem than the Championship, obviously not having spotted that every time he has played in the PL, he has been absolutely useless.

I think Jack did go down a bit too easily but that's what everyone does these day - it was no different to the pen Sheffield Utd got against us or several others I've seen given.  And anywhere else n the field that's given as a foul.   So even with VAR, no consistency.  Perhaps it's because it's Jack.  In any case it looked like contact was outside the box.

I keep thinking the same, but it does seem like Bielsa has got them conditioned to play that way for 90 mins.  I think that's the hardest I've seen an opposition team work in quite a while.  They do seem to be picking up the majority of second balls and moving forward at real speed.

I think Bielsa's sub was brilliant management.  We all knew that lad looking at a second booking at some point, or his game was compromised at the very least.  Not many managers would have the balls to make that change that early.

The problem in midfield is that they're not really using theirs in attack, as soon as they get the ball they have 2-3 players on each wing and we're not following them (which I'm sure is intentional). If we get a bit more control as I expect the game will change quickly.

I don't think given the angle he came at it and the speed it was going across he could have got his left on to it. Either way they one shot actually on target which is something we've done a decent job on for a while now with other teams (inc. the end of last season). Denying really clear cuts chances. Let's hope that continues and we can pinch one or two.

Does have Stoke vibes where we huffed and puffed to a 1-0 defeat albeit with second string team.

Hopefully DS will change things quickly, plan A hasn't worked for once this season. Would get Davis on alongside Watkins to give their backline something to think about.

Traore for last 20 minutes.

Our lack of possession is now concerning me, TV!
We've ceded far too much of the game to the opposition - we need to get this game by the scruff of its neck and stick it to them.

Yep. Being beaten by the better team on the night. But it just feels like we're losing to the team putting in the effort, rather than being better than us.

We have a few players who have a 'relaxed' style when playing. Jack, Mings, and Barkley to an extent.  When we're winning, it looks great, but when we're not, or being outfought, it's infuriating...

I like Trez, works hard, seems to play with a smile on his face and looks like he'd be a great guy to be around. But he's just a bit shit.

Not, however, as utterly shit as Bamford, who the RMC commentators were speculating might be more suited to the Prem than the Championship, obviously not having spotted that every time he has played in the PL, he has been absolutely useless.

Hmmm...

Just need to get back on it next weekend, season been full of hammerings for some top teams.

Man. United went from 6-1 home defeat to beating PSG within two weeks so that's the type of mentality we need e.g. it's just one bad game.

Would hate for us to feel sorry for ourselves and go winless for 6-7 games which would kill a promising season stone dead.

This is the Villa we saw last season. Let teams attack, wave after wave and end up conceding. You cannot keep playing this way and not expect what has happened tonight to happen. We brought this on ourselves. As great as Liverpool was this was in equal measure horrendous

Exactly this. Counter attack has served us well this season, we've taken practically all our chances and outworked teams but we need to learn how to keep hold of the ball too.

Last weekend was pretty much 50-50% possesion.

We're just not very good against teams who can manically press us in midfield. Southampton will be like this next weekend and they also have a striker who can finish a chance so that's a big test now with this setback.

The problem is the reliance on the counterattack, which is to say the reliance on individuals being brilliant when they get space. If you watch Leeds on the ball they take very few touches and they're always moving according to patterns they clearly practice; when we can't break we're really laborious, taking five touches, looking up, waiting for something to happen rather than knowing what will in the situation. It makes us, frankly, predictable apart from one player.

Precisely. To be fair defensively it looks like we've worked a lot on our shape since the restart but there is definitely a suspicion on us relying on players doing something magical at times. We have a lot of players capable of scoring great goals but perhaps a bit too reliant on that. Maybe it's come from having had so much money to spend I don't know. Still been a great start to the season

Whoopee fucking doo. We've just had four Dean Smith masterclasses. Admire them.
I’m sick of hearing about fucking Bielsa. You would think he could turn lead into gold the way some/ most pundits go on about him.

There's a reason so many managers admire him and claim he's the best. We're witnessing a Bielsa masterclass. Sometimes you just have to sit back and admire.

Whoopee fucking doo. We've just had four Dean Smith masterclasses. Admire them.

Exactly lets not carried away.

It had to be Leeds. Why did it have to be Leeds? And with a Bamford hattrick, just why?

It's like the exact footballing polar opposite of hammering Liverpool. A hammering from Leeds and Bamford getting the match-ball.

It's somehow both a beautiful and crushing irony. I won't deny they were the better team tonight but at the same time... Leeds! Just why?!

I thought there were two issues tonight apart from the fact that Leeds played very well.
Firstly Dean Smith.
I thought he got his tactics completely wrong effectively he hung the two full backs out to dry .
We all know how Leeds play with two wide players and we should have had two wing backs to cover the full backs and break forward to support the forwards.
Instead we had just three midfielders and they played narrow.
In consequence the forwards got little support and the defence none.It wasn’t even changed has the second half progressed.
Secondly
Barclay didn’t get off the coach and McGinn went missing in the second half.Poor Douglas had to try and stem the flow himself.
It’s been a great start and there’s no need to panic tho I have to say I feel very flat at the moment I just hope Dean learns from his mistakes has we progress thru the season.
