Disappointed we conceded 2. Decent performance other than that. If only we were Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds.
-
Happy with the 3 points.
-
Not bad. Well done lads!
-
That's going to take a while to sink in.
-
I love you Villa.
-
Yeah, that was ok I suppose
-
Never in doubt.
-
We're back
(https://watchesinmovies.info/img/f/ColorOfMoney_Rolex2.jpg)
-
Most surreal 90 minutes I think I'll ever see watching us (and in a good way for once).
Don't think I can really add anything else other than going and getting ridiculously drunk (at home).
Have a good night all!
-
I am so happy I could I dunno smile for a month.
Been a long decade - we have our club back
-
I’m speechless - staggering. So delighted for them all - especially Ollie.
-
A decent win I suppose, the other team aren't much good are they. 8)
YYYEEESSSSS.
-
I'm too shellshocked to comment coherently on any aspect of that game for a few days. Enjoy your evening everyone ;)
-
The best player on the pitch was Grealish
-
Sports editors swearing as they head back into the office to rewrite their back pages.
-
In a minute I'm going to wake up and my pyjama bottoms will be all sticky......
What a bloody amazing result !!!!
Believe in the Villa !!!!!!
-
Beautiful. Loved seeing us take the game to them right from the first whistle. So many stand out performances too.
Only downside is I left Grealish out of my fantasy football team.
-
The best player on the pitch was Grealish
Two goals and three assists. And it could have been more. Fabulous.
-
Not much of a challenge but you can only beat what's in front of you.
-
1894, 1896, 1897, 1899, 1900, 1910, 1981, 2021.
IT'S HAPPENING.
-
Best attacking display I've seen in 50years.
Eclipsing the 77team.
-
We've had worse nights.
Barkley is going going to bring the very best from Jack and Super John. Keep everyone fit and top 6 isn't silly.
-
Dogheads

WTAF was that?? Its a travesty that we didnt score 12.
Lets get it right, Liverpools high line was pathetic, but we still had to punish it.
How fucking good was Barkley and Jacks link up, OMG!
Rashica, get your arse over here.
-
disappointed we didnt get 11 but we did ok against this average side ..Lets hope we do better next match
-
Best goal difference in the league now as well.
-
Wonderful
-
must take my hat off and say well done a great game to watch too
the south wales mancs and liverpool plastics will be crying in the valleys tonight . love it
Barkley will shine if he plays regular maybe gives your national team manager something to think about playing both him and Grealish in the same team
-
Really could’ve been 10
-
We're back
(https://watchesinmovies.info/img/f/ColorOfMoney_Rolex2.jpg)
Been that long since we won the 3 opening games in the league...like 1962?
-
Two sloppy goals given away, we need to improve....
I’m an emotional mess right now. There’s not much to smile about these days (for me) but that has made me so fucking happy.
Up the fucking Villa.
-
Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!
-
Disappointed about no clean sheet. Smith out.
-
That Ollie Watkins is a good prospect, isn't he?
I'm somewhat happy...
-
This was unreal
Thinking last season and this.
Dean Smith, which I wanted out as he wasn't good enough... well well humble pie
-
I am dreaming....must be. Such a shame we cannot be there.
-
A result for the ages. Fuck me.
-
Incredible stuff. We absolutely shredded them at the back time after time. Like others have said it will take some time to sink in really.
-
Well that was quite good.
-
Just woke up. Holy shit.
-
Superb everyone of them
Souness reckons the grass was too long for 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' to play their normal game- Twat
-
Meh. Shoulda been 10.
-
Still annoyed we couldn't beat Stoke's reserves and kids in the week.
-
When you think of Watkins' 1-on-1 miss, hitting the bar, Barkley's two chances in the first half - it could - quite literally - have been 10.
Probably the best attacking performance I've seen from us in... well... I can't remember a better one!
I can't decide how much of it was Liverpool being terrible, and now much was us being brilliant?
-
Hand over the title now, save everyone some time.
-
I think I will watch that again tonight. With a spot of wine.
-
The truly weird thing is that it should have been a lot more. If we'd run out 10-2 winners it would have been more than fair.
-
Gutted I wasn't able to hug all the folk next to me in the Holte.
We'll be talking about this in 30 years
-
I think I will always remember this day,. Tahnk you Aston Villa Football Club, thank you very much! And its not just the scores, we did outplay the Champions and last years Euoropean Champions!
-
It makes a huge difference having Barkley as a second ball carrier type who can also pass and shoot like Grealish. Those two and Watkins looked very dangerous all game and it augurs well for the season. Even Trez looked the part with the ball at times to night.
Ok some flukey deflections but we had to be taking the shots for that to happen.
Second with a game in hand. That'll do. For now.
-
Everyone on that pitch is as ten, except Jack who was off the scale, destroyed them.
-
Brilliant absolutely brilliant, well done Ollie, Jack, Ross, SJM well done Villa, champions elect
UP THE VILLA
-
We are Aston Villa. UTV
-
The truly weird thing is that it should have been a lot more. If we'd run out 10-2 winners it would have been more than fair.
We scored a goal or two that had a bit of luck. We missed chances that could and should have made it many, many more than it ended up. And just imagine if the grass was cut shorter. It would be even more.
-
Every single one of them were fucking magnificent tonight.
They will go down in villa folklore after that.
-
In years to come we will all be able to say that we weren't there for the 7 (SEVEN) 2 (2).
-
Only slightly worried about the 4 or 5 sitters we missed.
-
Second in the table with a game in hand......
-
Smith out.
-
It's OK, but we shoudn't get carried away.
If Watkins truly belonged at this level he'd have had a fourth and fifth late on.
We'll need to be sharper when we face better opposition than the likes of Liverpool.
The better teams will punish us for such profligacy. :o
-
Absolutely amazing performance. Enough said!!!
-
If the league is voided now, do we win on points per game?
-
I think I will always remember this day,. Tahnk you Aston Villa Football Club, thank you very much! And its not just the scores, we did outplay the Champions and last years Euoropean Champions!
Agreed. There's some results down the years that still stick in the memory. This will be one of them.
-
Sanctify the match thread, preserve the post-match in aspic, and remember this forever. One of the best days of my life.
-
Ollie berating himself for not scoring more. I’m loving this attitude.
-
Just wish we were all there to see it in person.
-
Did anybody else hear Graeme Souness try and blame the grass being too long at half time? Probably the most hilarious punditry ever.
-
Well, that's comfortably our best league game I've ever watched.
We could have easily scored double figures. Scousers go P.L.O.P!!!
-
Its a mad world lads. But lets all enjoy tonight 8)
-
Did anybody else hear Graeme Souness try and blame the grass being too long at half time? Probably the most hilarious punditry ever.
As one of ours might have put it, Red Red Whine.
-
Abso-fucking-lutely splendabuloustastic.
-
Superb everyone of them
Souness reckons the grass was too long for 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' to play their normal game- Twat
Spilled my 10th vodka coke when I heard that 😂😂😂
-
Stood up in the living room at the end and applauded them off the pitch.
-
Did anybody else hear Graeme Souness try and blame the grass being too long at half time? Probably the most hilarious punditry ever.
He should count himself lucky that the grass wasn't shorter. We would have smashed them beyond oblivion.
-
Get the entire International break to enjoy this now...hell...the rest of our lives. Never going to forget this game!
-
Was living in the grim north in 1976 and missed the 5-1.Due to Covid missed being there for this one.
Note to self; stay away for all Liverpool matches.
UTV
-
Just woke up. Holy shit.
GOOD MORNING!
-
Fuck off Souness, you joyless, brainless c***! Fuuuuccccckkkkkkk offfffff!
-
Its days like tomorrow that I am absolutely fucking DELIGHTED I work in L1 in and office full of Liverpool fans.
Wow. What the good fuck have I just seen?
Liverpool lucky as usual, as somehow the bastards kept it down to 7. We legitimately should have won 10 or 11.
The worst defending I've ever seen. Utterly mental
They all deserve credit but I'll pick a few out,
Watkins- should have had 5. Pace, power and a complete bully, does so well running the channels and also holds the ball up so well. Constantly in the right place at the right time.
Barkley- he breaks the lines time and time again. Big, quick, excellent technique, pressed high and deserved a hat trick. Looks a real player and takes the shine off Grealish in the sense that there's now two players to stop.
Grealish- just awesome. What a fucking player.
Cash- felt he struggled postionally, but he looks an absolute warrior. Quick, dogged and doesn't give up.
They were all great. Everybody worked their bollocks off.
Smith's tactics were absolutely spot on, that quick diagonal let us cut them to shreds.
What a game. Very proud.
-
The midfield three were like men against boys, they battered them, stronger and better in every area.
-
Graeme Souness, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Danny Murphy, can you hear me Danny Murphy, your boys took a hell of a beating.
-
Souness really is a bitter, sour ******.
-
This is one of those nights you wish you could go down the pub and celebrate with people who share your joy.
Sleep well, you lovely people.

McGinn - immense .
-
If Dean Smith thinks he can get away playing like that then he can think again.
Scandalous.
-
That was ace. Proper ace.
-
Fuck off Souness, you joyless, brainless c***! Fuuuuccccckkkkkkk offfffff!
This, a million times.
A red eyed fucking dinosaur who’s time has been and long gone.
-
To be fair to Cash ads he was up against one of the best attacking full backs in the country. He’s absolutely awesome and yes he’s a proper warrior.
-
Credit to Targett today: thought he played very solidly.
Cash had a tough time against Jota and Robertson, and won.
Credit to Trez - ran his nuts off and played one or two very nice passes.
-
Barclay and Jack have a superb understanding already.
-
It wasn't just the win but the nature of it. The score didn't do us justice. Magnificent and should have been more.
-
I was feeling good about this one and then I saw that our bogey man, Mane, was out with Allison and stuck a sneaky score on the win at 7/1!
Get in Villa!
-
Just a word of caution because this is going to fuck us all off over the coming days. We didn't win. Liverpool lost and it will be all about them.
-
I wonder how Smith is going to explain that utter shambles.
-
Everton fans complaining to Boris...their neighbours have let 7 in.
Nicked from. Tw*tter
-
If this one isn't first on MOTD tonight I shall be slightly miffed
-
Carragher laughing.... Well me too... I can't stop fucking laughing my head off and giggling too...
-
Jamie Carragher can't explain it. Well let me try for you then fucknuts, you got absolutely smashed out of sight by a great team.
-
Carra has been crying I reckon.
-
Absolutely f-cking brilliant! I'm so proud of Aston Villa Football Club. UTV! VTID!
-
I was feeling good about this one and then I saw that our bogey man, Mane, was out with Allison and stuck a sneaky score on the win at 7/1!
Get in Villa!
The missus stuck a tenner on us yesterday at 10/1. She didn't trust us not to bollocks it up, and cashed out when it was 5-2!
-
My daughter got married yesterday, I thought the weekend couldn't get any better. Well it didn't but bloody hell it was a closevrun thing. We are back!
-
Coming into a double hit of Liverpool and Leicester, it looked like we'd have a tough time. Well, Leicester had an awful game and after our display against Liverpool today, I'm suddenly fancying that one. In fact, I think Leeds will be the toughest game of the month.
Amazing display. We put them to the sword. I'd say we were clinical, and we were, but then you could say we could have had 11-12. We looked dangerous almost every attack. Grealish was sensational. At the moment he and James are probably the two best in the division. 3 goals, 2 assists.
Watkins 3 goals, 1 assist. Brilliant. McGinn has been fantastic in the last two. Barkley should have scored a hattrick but that aside, a great debut. Trezeguet (who got himself an assist too) was excellent today too. Defensively it was actually our worst display so far, but even so, we largely coped well. Targett played well. Cash looks a good signing. By comparison to the rest of the league, we look pretty solid. Honestly what the fuck has happened to the defenders in the Premier League this season? It's fucking bizarre. Every side has looked ropey. We're seeing astonishing results but it's not just a complete oddity, Liverpool have looked increasingly suspect at the back since project restart. They'd already tied up the league. This season they've looked very suspect and we exploited that.
It's early days. This is a crazy game, but our first 11 could really have a very impressive season (there's more than a touch of the balance, speed and quality Leicester's title winners had for example, when they took the league by surprise). It's also nice to have some good options on the bench. But while we look like there's a cohesion from all our work in lockdown, and pretty much all the top 6 from last season are struggling with either defensive frailties and/or attacking quality, we seem to look well oiled across the board. Lets keep the momentum up because now is the time to exploit it. So I hope we really take the game to Leicester after the break.
Well done Deano. He's played a blinder today, and through pre-season. I think we might be going places.
-
Well that was just fuckin sensational! Thankyou, Villa!!
-
Everton fans complaining to Boris...their neighbours have let 7 in.
Nicked from. Tw*tter
LMAO ...thats brilliant!
-
Sensational Villa.
Simply sensational.
Well done to everyone connected to our great club.
-
To be fair to Cash ads he was up against one of the best attacking full backs in the country. He’s absolutely awesome and yes he’s a proper warrior.
What I liked about Cash was that even though he was being given a torrid time he kept coming back for more, he kept working his sicks off.
Great attitude
-
Wow! What a game.
Could this be our Everton 89 moment?
-
Klopp clapped us at the end when greeting Deano , I like that he knows they were well beaten
-
The biggest winner today is Man U and OGS. Nobody will give a fuck about them now.
-
I'd like to apologise to whomever it was who posted that losing to Stoke wasn't too bad because a victory against Liverpool would set us up for the season.
The amount of belief our team can take from that is unreal.
Yesssss!
-
Klopp clapped us at the end when greeting Deano , I like that he knows they were well beaten
Klopp is generally class to be fair.
-
SKY have just spent ten minutes directing Liverpool.
Souness could barely say the words.
What next? A live link to King Kenny for his reaction???
-

Joey Essex is a fabulous player.
-
Staggering result. No one had a bad game. Motm was the grass length.
Otherwise cash did well against a really strong right side. The defense were solid, lots of good blocks etc. Our engine room is the midfield who look dynamic, fit and creative. We had some luck but we made it. The changes show we have some depth other than at centre half unless Engels reappears
Very happy for Watkins, if he hadn’t broken his duck I guess the pressure would have started..
At some point we’ll have a dip in form but top ten looks to be a realistic target.
The athletic had van dyke as the third best premier league player ever if I remember correctly. McGrath didn’t make the list...
-
McGinn was awesome. He is very much back.
-
What in the world is happening today?? My Cleveland Browns nearly scored 50 against the Cowboys, and then log in to see Villa scored a touchdown against freaking Liverpool! Does this put us second in the table with a game in hand?
-
I think we'll see more crazy results like this as the season goes on.
Post lockdown, the games stayed pretty much true to form, as it was easier (though not easy) to focus on a small snapshot of games.
Some of those players for the Redscouse have already played Saturday > midweek Saturday without much rotation. And on the back of a shorter than usual break pre season they'll get leggy quicker.
I was expecting that sort of thing later in the season, mind.
So long as we're on the right side of the result more often than not I couldn't give a monkey's chuff.
-
Klopp clapped us at the end when greeting Deano , I like that he knows they were well beaten
He was generally very gracious and impressed by Ollie.
-
What in the world is happening today?? My Cleveland Browns nearly scored 50 against the Cowboys, and then log in to see Villa scored a touchdown against freaking Liverpool! Does this put us second in the table with a game in hand?
It most certainly does.

-
I just wish Hansen and Lawrenson were still on MOTD.
-
McGinn was awesome. He is very much back.
McGinn, Luiz, Barkley is a Premier League midfield.
I also never realised just how quick Ross Barkley is.
-
I remember their wanker fans rubbing it in when the beat us 6-0 the year we went down. Tonight was the kick in the bolloxs they deserve.
Enjoy tonight, after a long 10 years, we have our football club back.
-
Barkley was a brilliant addition to that 11.
-
Unbelievable performance. Well done Villa. I can't enthuse more, one very happy old man tonight.
-
I was jumping up and down on the Holte in 76
Tonight I was jumping up and down from the chair, in 76 I thought it meant we had arrived. We finished 4th, can you imagine finishing the same.
Can you imagine a full Villa Park celebrating this, probably our best league victory in my lifetime, Tears welling up.
Fair play to Klopp, recieved the end with a ruefull smile and saw off the Villa players.
-
This is the best result I've ever experienced. Just gutted to have conceded!
-
Souness voted out.
Surprise sur-fucking-prise.
******.
-
Barkley was a brilliant addition to that 11.
Brave of Smith to drop Conor and bring him straight in, but it worked perfectly.
-
I’d still like Klopp at Villa.....as Dean’s assistant
-
8-2 up and still chasing down everything and going for a ninth.
Watkins interviewed and saying he knows he can do better and should have got his fourth.
Grealish freed by having an entirely competent midfield behind him to absolutely run the show.
It's been a long, long, long time since they looked this good to me. Superb.
-
Purity Ales announce launch of Villa Party Seven

To be fair to Cash ads he was up against one of the best attacking full backs in the country. He’s absolutely awesome and yes he’s a proper warrior.
What I liked about Cash was that even though he was being given a torrid time he kept coming back for more, he kept working his sicks off.

You can certainly see why he was loved at Forest, they were sad to see him leave but wished him all the best. His attitude is superb. What a signing.
-
Rather long interview with Klopp, this.
-
A magnificent performance from all of them.Barkley looked like, quoting Ron Saunders,'the missing piece in the jigsaw.Luiz,McGinn and Barkley are a skilful physical midfield ,add in the unbelievable brilliance of Jack and the pace of Watkins and Trez or Traore, plus a competent defence. It resembles 76-77,the achilles heel being weak reserves in some positions, though this team has a far better keeper than Burridge and we scored two more st home against Liverpool, the reigning champions.
-
Fair play to Klopp, recieved the end with a ruefull smile and saw off the Villa players.
He's a classy bloke, Klopp.
Unlike Ferguson, who was even a sore winner.
-
If Watkins is injured where are the goals going to come from, we might have to settle for four.
-
I’m still waiting to find out who Liverpool were playing
-
Did anybody else hear Graeme Souness try and blame the grass being too long at half time? Probably the most hilarious punditry ever.
Also at the end, “don’t get too excited” - I mean really!
-
Smith on MoTD...
On Barkley giving Villa a new dimension: “He does. We tweaked our system and had two holders in Douglas Luiz and John McGinn and freed up Ross as a 10 and tried to keep them down one side.
Interesting, explains why Cash was exposed now and then - and Trent quiet for 'The Mighty Reds YNWA'
-
Has Raschica signed yet?
-
Fair play to Klopp, recieved the end with a ruefull smile and saw off the Villa players.
He's a classy bloke, Klopp.
Unlike Ferguson, who was even a sore winner.
Always my issue with him. A bad loser - yeah I underatand that.
A bad fucking winner
-
Ollie is going to be immense.
He tries to break away , get in behind and thats brilliant but its also all the times when he doesn't get that through ball...he protects it and hold up play so fucking good!
Must be a nightmare for a defensive line.
-
‘There’ll be some smiling faces going to work tomorrow.’ He gets it.
-
What a difference it makes to have the players, and the belief, to continue attacking after taking the lead instead of sweating it out in our own penalty area waiting for the inevitable. More of this please!
-
It’s been a long time since we’ve had the brackets.
-
Only Villa can lose to Stoke then smash the Champions. Might have myself another beer
-
Class manager, class club, now we have a class team.
VTID
-
Barkley was a brilliant addition to that 11.
Proper proven PL quality. And he will make Jack, Doug and SJM better
-
How salty is Souness about Jack?!
-
Klopp very fair and magnanimous. Saying yes we made mistakes but they forced those mistakes. Gushing about Jack.
-
Sky absolutely struggling with this!
Poor old Mr Souness.
-
Barkley running through the middle made space for Watkins and Grealish. Been a while since we’ve had a player do that. He could have scored 4
-
How salty is Souness about Jack?!
Looks like he's going to have a meltdown!
-
Evra and Souness saying 'Jack needs to work hard every week' - Absolutely pathetic pundits!!!
-
Smith on MoTD...
I think it was the same against Fulham, you have to accept that it's impossible to stop everything, so you try to cancel out the biggest threats and set up to deal with those you can't.
-
Is there any MOTD on tonight?
-
Any sign of Southgate? Thought he might want to see what Barkley and Grealish could do together.
-
The fact that Jack wasn’t the stand out performer speaks volumes.
-
Any sign of Southgate? Thought he might want to see what Barkley and Grealish could do together.
Yes he commented that Mason Mount did well.
-
How salty is Souness about Jack?!
Looks like he's going to have a meltdown!
Him and Carragher are struggling. They praise us through massively grated teeth. They’re hating every minute.
-
Jesus, we bang on about Mason Mount more than Southgate does.
-
Any sign of Southgate? Thought he might want to see what Barkley and Grealish could do together.
Yes he commented that Mason Mount did well.
"clap" "clap"
-
Jesus, we bang on about Mason Mount more than Southgate does.
Nobody does
-
The fact that Jack wasn’t the stand out performer speaks volumes.
He was still Motm but I know what you mean.
-
Is there any MOTD on tonight?
Half ten, BBC 1. I think we might not be on last.
-
So on a different thread I said after the Stoke defeat & feeling pissed about going out of the League Cup that I would have rather won that game instead of today, well that was bollocks because I am absolutely buzzing, jumping and a little bit drunk. Fantastic Dean and everyone.
-
Barkley running through the middle made space for Watkins and Grealish. Been a while since we’ve had a player do that. He could have scored 4
Was it the Everton fans who told us he always tries to score is not much cop as he misses most. Well if he lets the rest of the midfield through it won't matter. Last year we had an immobile forward, McGinn injured and Jack double and triple teamed which stopped him. Barkley pretty much frees the space for the other two but will also run and scare the shit out of defenders as well.
-
Historic night tonight, we could have had 12. Grealish Barkley and Watkins linked up fantastically and also well done Dean Smith. Tactically brilliant.
-
Loved watched Graeme Sourness after. Apparently Jack should try maintaining his performance every week....what a clown
-
It’s the fact we’d still have scored four without the deflections!
🤣🤣🤣
-
Looks like the Spuds game gets top billing on MOTD tonight. Hmmm....
-
Highlights on Sky
https://www.skysports.com/football/a-villa-vs-liverpool/report/428868
Unfortunately they only show the Goals and not the other 6 really good chances to score.

Having a lot of shots means you're more likely to get lucky with deflections, it's part and parcel
-
Barkley was a brilliant addition to that 11.
Proper proven PL quality. And he will make Jack, Doug and SJM better
Yeah if he Barkley gives a shit all of a sudden that midfield.looks bloody strong
-
Barkley was a brilliant addition to that 11.
Proper proven PL quality. And he will make Jack, Doug and SJM better
And Trez going on tonights display. Thought he had possibly his best game for us.
-
Looks like the Spuds game gets top billing on MOTD tonight. Hmmm....
I think they had it locked in due to prepping the videos and stuff like that.
-
We may only get 11 in the team of the week!
-
Someone should send help to Molineux Mix and to the SHA lads. Some of them will be looking for a high bridge.
-
Looks like the Spuds game gets top billing on MOTD tonight. Hmmm....
I think they rarely put the latest game on first to give them more time to edit it together.
It was (nearly) always the case with the late Saturday game.
-

Manure fan as well apparently. TBF, he has taken it in his stride retweeting all the Footy Twitters taking the piss.
-
We thrash Liverpool but Spurs humiliate Man U
-
Speechless. I was out on a previously arranged cinema trip, saw score at the end. Incredible. Just incredible.
-
Someone should send help to Molineux Mix and to the SHA lads. Some of them will be looking for a high bridge.
Anyone know if it is the shortest or the longest match threads of ours on the SHA Site.
If the latter I suspect it will just be Spawny repeated for most of it.
-
Anyone tell me all the 7 trips out the house Leej took. I know he missed the first for a dad taxi moment. What were the others?
-
Klippety Klopp
-
There is so much to be positive about there I don’t know where to start!
-
Most importantly: 9 points down, 31 to go.

It was (nearly) always the case with the late Saturday game.
Yes I think you're right otherwise we would definitely be first on.
Truly remarkable. Saw the 5 -1 as a kid in 76 and the last 7 goals in the league v Wimbledon but not comparable to tonight given the difference between the teams only a few months ago.
To get a win was one thing, to play well was another but to score 7 against a team with their quality was simply amazing.
-
35 is now the magic number.
-
Feeling a little emotional tonight. I was at the 5-1 game and never thought I would witness anything like that again. Well this evening proved me wrong. We have got our club back. I think good times are on the way again.
-
My daughter got married yesterday, I thought the weekend couldn't get any better. Well it didn't but bloody hell it was a closevrun thing. We are back!
Congratulations x2 Steve.
-
Ollie berating himself for not scoring more. I’m loving this attitude.
Exactly this. U Lions. We are Aston Villa and we have Jack, John and plenty of good lads who want to win and fuck the fuckers
-
Anyone tell me all the 7 trips out the house Leej took. I know he missed the first for a dad taxi moment. What were the others?
All the first half. Spent the second half on the settee refreshing the match thread and watching youngest daughter play on Roblox.
-
Well Dave Woodhall I am looking forward to something very special in your next masterpiece. Is tonight a defining moment?
Please make some put down references to the salty comments on Sky, Souness particularly is pathetic and needs replacing
Good luck

It feels so good knowing we handed them one of their worse defeats in history.
-
I saw a tweet earlier that I can't find now. It said the two most expensive defenders in history conceded 13 between them today.
-
Strong at the back and electric going forward. We are going to hurt lots of teams this season.

Good point. Still, the Beeb have, what, 15 goals in the first two games...when has that happened before? Specially when WE scored almost half of them! Magical times
-
Brilliant performance tonight. And for all the great additions on the pitch, I'd say Craig Shakespeare is the best signing of the lot. That was a Villa team who'd trained and knew exactly how to tear apart their opposition.
-

If he posted a picture of the final scoreboard with "'nuff said" as title it would be perfect. What else can do it justice?

They are also playing in the 'Premiership'.

Still fainted?

Best wishes to SteveN’s daughter and her new husband.
However, the Villa have just put 7 past Liverpool, just adding perspective.
I hope you’ll both be very happy!
-
Absolutely brilliant!!! I cannot say enough about what they did tonight! UTV!!!
-
An amazing night, just a shame couldn’t be there, VP would of been rocking.
Very hard to pick out players, and a lots already been said about Jack, Barklay and Ollie.
But Luiz was just immense, in a quiet almost unnoticeable way, just broke them down time and again. McGinn is the back to the terrier we are love. I absolutely love Cash, absolute warrior with a cross. Special mention to the maligned Trez and Targett who both worked tirelessly with lots of composure.
Liverpool were a car crash, but did we have anyone less than a 9.5!!
Who knows where this takes us, let’s enjoy the ride
-
Well Fuck Me. Thats all Ive really got to say.
The most impressive win I've ever seen. Could and should have been more.
-
My mom was on my Facebook asking me 'Have Villa really scored 7 goals?' I was about to reply when Cheltenham lion told her 'We pissed all over the Scouse bastards'. To which the old girl replied 'Great stuff!' :-D

Last time we scored 7 (7-1, Wimbledon 94/95) Lineker famously said on MOTD that 3 of our goals were very lucky and 3 were offside, thus intimating that it should have been a 1-1 draw. If he tries the same tonight...
-
In a pub in Mayo. 2 villa fans both from Kings Heath and 20 Liverpool fans. We won 7-2. About as surreal as it gets. F**k me
-
I am currently drinking Bishop's Finger. Thanks everyone.
-
Rang my mother tonight and she was stunned, but in a good way.
-
Every week we follow,
The boys in Claret and Blue,
We even destroyed Liverpool
By the score of 7 (SEVEN) to 2...
-
What’s pleasing is we’ve started to beat the top sides at home again - Arsenal last season, Liverpool this. And from scraping goals at the end of last year we are scoring for fun now. Crazy times.
-
How salty is Souness about Jack?!
Souness was a thug on the pitch and a fool in the dugout, Jack is a natural born footballer, it’s all a bit too much for bitter old Graeme..
-

From The Guardian's match report:
In the end, Liverpool were so bedraggled that they looked like champions in name only. Manchester United’s 6-2 capitulation to Tottenham earlier in the day had been shocking but they are a team in dismal form with multiple problems. This upset was on the next level.
-
I do have a criticism of tonight. Please tell me we haven’t turned in to one of them clubs and that the music after the goals will only be temporary? Or better still, that I imagined it.

What was that thing Jack et al were doing with their fingers after scoring, looked like they were making an A.
-
Incredible stuff. We absolutely shredded them at the back time after time. Like others have said it will take some time to sink in really.
-
I love Watkins' hat trick goal. We break up their attack on the edge of our own box, run the ball up the pitch, win a free kick, Trez busts a gut to get on the end of it to centre to three onrushing players. Brilliant to watch, absolutely superb.
-
When Watkins hit the bar, were the fuck was Adrian going? The dressing room?
-
Watkins was immense - 3 times the player Wesley ever will be - he is going to be our Yorke. Barkley seems to be the final piece of the jigsaw - him and jack seem to be telepathic
-

Isn't it a charity? I remember the pub player we once had Davies doing it at Anfield after he scored just before HT

When Watkins hit the bar, were the fuck was Adrian going? The dressing room?
That was hilarious, even Carragher was laughing
Shows the value of confidence, even one of the best teams in the world fell apart and made junior mistakes when things were going badly. Gomez was woeful all game.
-
The balance of the whole team looked spot on. The work rate, the vision the creativity. Brilliant. It might be different when we play a team that parks the bus. But I’d still bank on Watkins to take the only chance he gets. Am I dreaming?
-
I’ve got to post again as I’ve had a few but that was simply unreal - they were so sloppy and we were sharp as hell. Trez for the pass for the final goal as well.
-
Adrian went to the Doug Ellis for a shit pint

It’s a message for Souness, the Arsehole.

That meg on Van Dijk. Unfortunately when Grealish is that good, no one can read him and Barkley ended up scuffing the shot as he wasn't expecting it. It was like the pass to Taylor the other week

Like the 5-1 in '76, tonight's a night to echo down the ages. Except this time, whenever someone says, "I was there," everyone will know that they weren't!
-
What a performance. Incredible. Was still nervous at half time bizarrely. Think I relaxed at 6-2. One that will live long in the memory.

Maybe the Red Scouse will now re-jig their YNWA to YAWN!!
If we can maintain this level of pressing, anything is possible. All our players tonight seemed to feed off each other’s commitment. Exciting times and, with results like this one, players may not be so reticent to sign for the mighty Villa in the future. Yes, I’m looking at you, Rashica!!

Someone should send help to Molineux Mix and to the SHA lads. Some of them will be looking for a high bridge.
Nah, leave them to it.

I haven't heard a peep from the Facebook Brummie Red contingent. They're usually quite excitable while trying to remain stoic about another routine Scouser victory. I wonder where they all are.

-
Let’s be honest, 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' are just a bit shit. Considering last time we played them at home we beat them by a 6 goal margin I’m not sure this can be considered progress. Wink
-
Only just been able to bring myself to this forum after being glued to the telly for the last 4 hours!
What the hell have we just witnessed?!
Dean Smith and the boys have just taken a palette load of humble pie and rammed it down a lot of our throats tonight! Every single one of em excellent from start to finish - Yes, EVEN Matty Targett, who I thought looked a completely different player to the one that played against Fulham at the weekend. Credit where it’s due - great performance and long may it continue!
What I loved the most is the fact that this Villa side wasn’t 10 men PLUS Jack Grealish, it was a totally balanced lineup where every single one of those attacking players (even Mings at times!) looked a creative threat going forward, allowing Jack to thrive. Wasn’t sure what Barkley would bring to our side, but if it’s more of that, we need his signature tomorrow!
Also, a special mention for Konsa, who is rapidly turning into a Rolls Royce of a defender.
If we keep this up, we could potentially have a lot more than 2 players in the England setup come next summer!
I detest Liverpool.. and that result has brought a glimmer of happiness to a fucking awful year. UTV!
-
This is the virtually the same team that also beat Yanited and Arsenal away in pre season.
Conventional wisdom says not to put too much stock in pre season results. But both of those sides put out strong line ups and it can't have done any harm confidence-wise.
Some smart business tomorrow and (hopefully) decent centre half cover by mid October and we're in good shape.
-
I've always tutted when somebody says "we're going to give somebody a good thrashing one of these days." Didn't expect it to be Liverpool to be honest!
And to think, on Thursday night we were worried about an angry Liverpool.
-
Souness voted out.

Exactly, I finally said to my 10 year old villa mad son ‘I think we’ve got this’ when the 7th went in.
Nice Camden IPA to finish off the weekend, feeling an aura of calmness now, not used to this.

Same here, Salah scoring a second at 5-2 and I looked and though they are a good enough attacking team to get three in 30 mins easily.
Of course I was only following text updates and assumed we might sit back at 4-1. According to Ollie, Smith told them at half time not to ease off because we had scored 4 in one half and they can easily do it the second half.

I know the way to Cotteridge Wines and visit Belgium regularly. What do you think? Those two and Westvleteren, there's nothing to choose between them.

What the fuck just happened? What an amazing performance. Every single player put a shift in. I seriously should have been 11-5. We look so sharp going forward. Liverpool are an excellent side who play really well between the lines and took their two goals well. We had a bit of luck with deflected shots but if you don't shoot, you don't score. I'm glad common sense prevailed and the players who had the shots get to keep their goals. I love Martinez, looks a snip. Watkins is a cracking player. Grealish and Barkley will be a great partnership. SJM was back on his game tonight, hope that continues. Mings and Konsa did everything well. Great game, wish I'd have recorded it!

Everyone says the champions ride their luck sometimes on the way to becoming Champions.
Their first goal had the whiff of that as well as the ball popped up from the blocked shot/challenge directly at the right height for Salah when it could have gone anywhere.
-
There is just something I really like about a midfield containing a tenacious Scotsman, a box to box Scouser and a mercurial local genius. Got a feeling like it’s worked in the past somehow.
-
Let’s be realistic we are only nine points above the relegation zone...tongue-in-cheek emoji
-
By the way, Ollie's goal into the top corner, the right footed effort? Should appear on any goal of the month competition, the move started with us winning the ball back, in our own area. Lovely sweeping move from back to front and a great finish.

Oh my gosh!!
That was so so good.
Had a good feeling before the match.
Just fantastic to a player.
Dean Smith is an absolute hero.

Proud villa followers tonight across the world and UK unite.
We respect the Covid situation and disappointing of course we couldn't be there .
I was there last year for the defeat and we are now winning the matches we lead in.
Joyous today .
Could have been 10 !
Well done everyone too. Great supporters on here.
Best wishes at this time Stay Safe.
Bloody love this Club.
Grealish standards are now another level. Well on way to hitting goal and assists target
Mings is amazing.
Watkins well on the way to hitting goal targets
Up the Villa

Also, shout out to Trez. He has his critics but that guy never gives less than 100% and deserves his spot imo.
Most players would have given up that ball for Ollie’s third. He puts the effort in EVERY game, and is steadily improving. Found a fair bit of room tonight, and could have had 2-3 goals had his teammates looked up and found him to be in a better position.

I know it should be in the beer thread, but Cotteridge Wines is the best offie in the country. Half a mile further down Pershore Road is Stirchley Wines, which is also beer heaven and possibly has a better Belgian choice. They used to sell Westvleteren in the Barton's; I never knew how rare it as until I was in a bar in Ghent and mentioned the fact in passing. The owner was going to drive to Newtown and buy up their entire stock. To my mind it's no better than Rochefort and certainly not worth four times the price.

Klopp is a classy guy isn't he? I know I've said that before here, but his analysis of the game made Carragher's and Souness's (especially Souness's) look pretty damn weak, top stuff. Also very very impressed with Dean's level-headedness, shows the seriousness of purpose which leads to moments like this. Long may it continue.

The pass from Jack for that won't get the credit it deserves but he drew 2 players in and then just flicked the ball down the line with the outside of his boot, was still a lot to deo but completely opened the defence up.

At 5-2, I was still worried. At what point in the game were you convinced we were going to win?
-
I was there in December 1976, standing on the Holte in glorious disbelief. I knew that was the start of something big. Tonight's performance was, I hesitate to suggest, even more emphatic. We were in control from the first minute to the last. Relentless attacking. Immaculate defending from the whole team. We looked like we could score every time we went forward. We restricted them to relatively few clear cut chances. Huge congratulations to Dean, the coaching staff and everyone of the players tonight. If only we could have been there ....

Same, I think they mentioned in the BBC that it appeared Liverpool had given up plus the next chance mentioned was Watkins one on one.
-
On the hour mark I was saying to myself it doesn't matter what happens now, we must be proud and gain confidence from this. Towards the end I thought we became too casual when an eighth goal seemed a formality. Somewhere past the hour mark Liverpool were completely beaten and started playing like Blues.

Stunning result. Days like these. You just can't buy them.
I didn't relax until the 85th min. I was really worried at 5-2 that they might still win and we'd look so stupid.

Funny how it rapidly goes downhill form ripping the piss out of Utd and especially when he keeps repeating "seven, seven, seven" and then goes very very quiet. But kudos to the chap for giving Villa credit for the performance.
-
That's the difference. A glory hunter can never really feel the joy or the pain as they know deep deep down its fake.
-
Marvellous. Biggest thing for me was that Man U losing 1-6 to Spurs wasn’t the biggest story of the day. UTV!!
-
Incredible day and a result we’ll talk about for a generation. We’ll have bumps in the road but two years ago we were losing meekly to Millwall, we’ve made incredible strides in such a short space of time. UTV.
-
Got up at 4:30am, bit early for kick off. Momentarily it crossed my mind getting out of bed, why I should bother?
Glad Dean Smith and co answered that emphatically. Credit to all involved.

Bloody daylight savings... by the time I woke up and got a river organised, it was 75 mins into the game. They didn't score another goal. Smith out!

Pre-match the commentator mentioned that Spuds had won 6-1 against ManUtd and that's the score Liverpool beat us by when we were relegated, hinting it may happen again....
We'll stick that in your pipe.
My Liverpool supporting mates are having it ripped out of them for fucking weeks now. Hahaha!
I got a bit pissed, fell asleep on the sofa and just woke up with the re-run on.. May stay up another hour and watch it again!

From the Beeb .
Aston Villa have won their opening three league games to a season for the first time since the 1962-63 campaign.
This was the first time Liverpool have conceded seven goals in a match in all competitions since April 1963 in a 7-2 league defeat at Tottenham, while it was the second time Aston Villa have netted seven times in a single Premier League game, after a 7-1 win over Wimbledon in February 1995.
Liverpool are the first reigning English top-flight champions to ship seven goals in a league match since Arsenal against Sunderland in September 1953.
Aston Villa have won four consecutive home Premier League matches for the first time since October 2007.
Liverpool's 11 goals conceded is their most after four games of a league season since 1937-38 (also 11).
Since the start of last season, Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins has scored more league goals than any other player in England's top four tiers (29, including play-offs).
Watkins was the 10th player to score a Premier League hat-trick against Liverpool, and the first since Dimitar Berbatov in September 2010.
Jack Grealish is only the second Aston Villa player to assist three goals in a single Premier League game, after James Milner v Burnley in February 2010.
Mohamed Salah has now scored against 25 of the 26 sides he has appeared against in the Premier League for Liverpool (96%) - the best ratio of any player in the competition for the club.
-
I just watched the game again. Advantage of being in North America. What I liked is we went to score more. 10 would have been fair. 12 generous. Never seen that before and I was at the Wimbledon game
-
Is this the biggest result in Premier League history, possibly European football history? I dont mean score wise, I mean for what it was, team avoiding relegation on last game of the season vs runaway Champions, best defence etc. They were without a doubt ine of the best teams in the world last season.
Put into context Celta Vigo beating Real Madrid 7-2.
Augsburg beating Bayern Munich 7-2.
Genoa beating Juventus 7-2.
I'm more shocked now than when I was watching the game.
-
Well that was certainly worth getting up for at 3am.
I still can't really believe what I saw.
What a difference Barkley (he could have had a hat-trick himself) made with his driving runs at their defence.
In a great tandem with Jack.
Every one worked their bollocks off, great to see.
I can't wait to get home to watch the game again.
It's got to be our greatest win since I've been a fan (1967) allowing for the so-called quality of opposition.
-
Results a bit tainted for me as the Tanzanian Villains werent around to witness it.

Superb, should have been 9
Thought Carragher was really good with his comments, but Souness calling us a little club before the game - he did not have anything good to say about us.
-
Is it possible that the team play better when we are not there, grumbling and criticising, both on and off the pitch? Perhaps they relish the cloister-like calm which provides a more-suitable atmosphere in which they can absorb the wise words from their mentors, stationed at the side of the pitch, and perform to the best of their abilities.
I only posit the question in the spririt of true research.
-
Currently enjoying a week in the Lake District with my Everton supporting mate and our wives. Climbed Scafell Pike yesterday then watched the game online last night. We were both gobsmacked at the way Villa took Liverpool apart. We have pace to burn now and a lot of teams will raise a few eyebrows after that display. I shall enjoy my birthday today. Thanks Dean and the team.

I can't think of any better.
3.1 v Man U in 1995 was a great first half and consolidated 2nd so not as good start to finish
7.1 v Wimbledon was great as no-one ever rolled them over but they aren't a patch on this Liverpool team
Too young to remember the 1976 one.

That was brilliant.

I was thinking about that. As an "underdog" game and totally outclassing the "Champions of The World" ... I give you Wembley on Sunday, the 27th March 1994. We were supposed to roll over and die to the all conquering [and they did win the double that year] Ferguson machine.
The 76 to 82 era was a special time down VP but as a complete performance in one game I cannot think of many [if any] to equal that. Even the 5-1 game was one half of glorious football followed by a second half which we controlled rather than dominated. I hope we are building something equally as good and enjoyable as that time, the signs are promising.

We were brilliant until it snowed. For about four months. When we came back we couldn't win a game and lost a cup final to Small Heath. 🤢

Always good to read the oppositions press view of the game:
https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/liverpool-aston-villa-goals-highlights-19048945
My particular highlight: "Ruthless and relentless, Villa were everything Liverpool were not."
-
Better than the Birmingham Mail's summary: "Villa were lucky and Grealish is off".
-
Superb all round performance.
Last night I thought that the 5-1 performance was better, because I was lucky enough to stand on the Holte that night, when we beat a team that were destined to win the league and European cup at the end of that season.
But this morning, I have revised my answer and consider last nights result better. Just consider a team that stayed up on the final day of the season demolishing the champions 7-2. It could of been more.
The difference between the two matches was that we battered them in BOTH halves last night.
Another bonus, a lot more fans were able to witness the trouncing last night!
-
Was that our best peformance in modern times ?

I think it is
I think it is when you take it in context. Liverpool, champions of England, Champions League winners the previous season and runners up with 97 points, World champions and had started with 3 wins out of 3. Yes they were missing Mane and the keeper but that same back four that had proved so brilliant over the past couple of seasons were ripped apart. Smith masterclass aided by Shakespeare and can't fault anyone on the pitch.
-
Fucking Sky do my head in, and I'm glad I cancelled my subscription. Co-commentators who recently played for Man U and Liverpool, and the same with the pundits in the studio. Where was somebody like Dion Dublin or Tony Daley to tell Souness he was talking out of his hoop?
-
Better than the Birmingham Mail's summary: "Villa were lucky and Grealish is off".
Scarily plausible!
-
It’s rare that you can look at a performance and say that the entire starting 11 had good games but that’s what we saw last night. I was in touch with a number of people through the came and to a man we were all still nervous at half time but we didn’t ease up for a second and double figures wouldn’t have flattered us. It will be interesting to see how teams set up against us from now on.
-
There was a Sky twat (I forget which one, there are so many) last week who said Villa will be ok this season but they will bore their way to safety.
That aged well.

I couldn't give a shit about the studio pundits, they can be as biased as they like but having Carragher as the co-commentator was a horrible decision, he was clearly biased and then once we had the 6th he sounded like he could burst into tears at any moment.
As for when the nerves went for me it was McGinns goal. In the last 10 years we've become accustomed, in games where we've taken an unexpected lead, to sitting back and trying to defend what we have, particularly if the opposition pull a goal back. Last night they scored to come back to 2-1 and if anything we pushed harder for our 3rd. The attitude of knowing we had more goals in us was, for me, very reassuring.

He's just playing the part Sky want him to, 'dour, washed up irrelevent ex-hard man, surly and moaning that no-one is as good as in my day'. And he's still only an understudy to Roy Keane in that role.
Great player. Arsehole.

I’ve just woken up after a night flight to Brussels from New York.
Just before we took off, I had this strange dream that Villa won 7-2 against the team that everyone was tipping to be Champions again this season.
It might be because I’m still slightly delirious after a broken sleep but this appears to have genuinely happened.
Watching the game back - Liverpool did play some nice stuff, but we totally out thought them in every aspect there. When we went 1-0 up, you could see that they were working the ball really well and trying to get back into the game. The 2nd and 3rd were sucker punches to them and to go in 4-1 at half time was going to be a hugely demotivating thing. We were excellent though. We were fast, speedy, played in brilliantly behind them. Liverpool had to look for the goals to bring the score but each time they did that, we hit them on the break - with incredible speed. We could have had 9 or 10 at least and that would have been fair.
I like Klopp and his honesty - a bit like Dean, they’re both not afraid to talk about tactics and what worked/didn’t work.
What are the odds on us winning the league now? I might have a £10 bet on that...

Same thing here with online uni classes this morning. A few very sheepish Liverpool fans (only because of Minamino, may I add. All Villa need is a Japanese international and we'd be huge!) and students raving about Grealish. I sat there very smugly and said 'I know'.

This still makes me loff
FULL-TIME
Aston Villa 7 (SEVEN)-2 Liverpool
Villa edge champions Liverpool.

I couldn't give a shit about the studio pundits, they can be as biased as they like but having Carragher as the co-commentator was a horrible decision, he was clearly biased and then once we had the 6th he sounded like he could burst into tears at any moment.
Thought he was as magnanimous as he could be under the circumstances. Even with the deflections, he was playing those down and saying how good we looked on attack.
Also said he was glad to see Villa stay up as the Premier League needs clubs like us and he loves the ground etc.
Towards the end he was laughing at their ineptitude more than anything else.
The alternative is Alan Smith, who - despite supposedly being a Villa fan - sounds like every match of ours he has to cover is a chore.
-
I think a very big thank you to the owners is in order. They’ve backed the management and are rewarded accordingly. I fear nobody now.
And, Grealish is steadily becoming my favourite ever player.

The club should put the game out on dvd, be a great Christmas present.

I don’t think he is a Villa fan, I thought he supported Everton as a kid.
One thing that did stand out for me was the pressing of the Liverpool team, we were all over them and didn’t let the, settle from start to finish. Great intensity to our play.
-
Thought McGinn was outstanding and totally bullied them
Oh and a message for Southgate
Get the team sheet stationary already printed with Grealish - then just fill in the rest
He is the best English midfield player in the country by a mile - no discussion, no argument - he just is.
Don't bullshit us with "His position" "Other players for that role"
Build the team around him - simple
-
Alan Smith has mentioned in a few interviews in the past that he was a Villa fan and stood on the Holte etc. He witters on about us on FIFA as well.
He might have been one of those half and half twats growing up though, he seems the sort.

Someone’s due a proper spanking soon
-
You can tell he had finally decided they were still better then Manure as it was only a 4 goal difference in scoreline rather then 5. Then we scored the 7th and he just had nothing to turn it into better then Manure which is why he just repeated "seven" over and over.

I was walking the nipper earlier and heard (presumably) some Villa youngster (11 maybe) heartlily barracking a fellow school attendee across the road who was wearing what seemed to be a Liverpool face mask. Commendation to the former.
-
I told my 5 year old about the results this morning. Half his school mates like Liverpool and ManUtd and they seem the the teams they adopt when playing at break times. I told him to make sure everyone knew the results and to tell them exactly who he was going to be today. He said 'I'm Villa and Jack Grealish'.
The look of wonder in his face when I told him Liverpool had got 2. 'Oh, we lost?' then I counted out the goals one by one on my fingers.... Magic!

Magic!
Brilliant. 😁
-
Typical Villa would be losing 5-0 at Leicester now
-
Should really have had 10 or 11 today. No joke.
-
Alan Smith has mentioned in a few interviews in the past that he was a Villa fan and stood on the Holte etc. He witters on about us on FIFA as well.
He might have been one of those half and half twats growing up though, he seems the sort.
Fair enough.
-
30% possession - 7 goals
-
30% possession - 7 goals
In fairness it's easy to dominate possession when you have eight kick offs.
-
Not sure why people are going on about Souness, Carragher et al (Al's a bastard though). Far as I'm concerned if we thrash any team in that style-their comments are of absolutely no concern to me.
-
30% possession - 7 goals
18 Shots,
11 on target
7 Goals
Liverpool
14 shots
8 on target
2 goals
Tbh possession is the most meaningless stat as if you can stop the other team from getting near the danger zone, they will just play it around the back which is comfortable to defend against, I mean look at Sheff U match first game to see the exact thing. However as shown last night, if you can win the ball and pretty much have runners breaking through in goal within 3-4 touches, you can destroy a team with minimal possession.

Doing the rounds:
When did Liverpool kick off?
Every 15 minutes.
-
Last night can be summed up in five words: Floor well and truly wiped.
One thing for sure, in thirty years time, no one will be scrambling around looking for footage of it as we are for the first massacre of 1976.
-
It was unbelievable.
Are we back? Are we really back? :'( :o
-
I usually roll my eyes at international breaks, as England are so pedestrian.
But having two weeks to dwell on us thumping the world champions is very pleasant.

I’ll be devoting tonight’s indie show to our routine five goal home win over Liverpool, (although it seems to happen every season these days).
Join the fun and frolickery online 9-11pm www.mearnsfm.org.uk . I is milking this win for all of its worth 😬😎
Don’t much care for this band but can’t resist playing them tonight...

I was thinking the same. Maybe wait for one at the end of the season entitled the top 10 matches of the Champion season and this one is 7th best.

Exactly - we don't need a video to let people know - anyone with an ounce of a footballing brain that saw that game knew what we did to them.
It should be immortalised but in a greatest hits compilation as im sure before we are finished we will have a good few to add to it

The Thriller at the villa.
Here's a memory trigger:
https://www.avfc.co.uk/news/2011/12/15/today-in-1976-astonishing-villa-put-champions-liverpool-in-a-spin
It's great to read all the reports today isn't it?
A scoreline like 7 (seven) - 2 adds another dimension to the aftermath.
If we'd won 2-1, then although we'd have been rightly pleased, it wouldn't have same impact.
Think about the fallout from our 8-0 loss at Chelsea under Lambert - Liverpool won't be able to just shrug this off
and we can add a huge amount of confidence.
Might go and watch the recording again...
-
I remember their wanker fans rubbing it in when the beat us 6-0 the year we went down. Tonight was the kick in the bolloxs they deserve.
Enjoy tonight, after a long 10 years, we have our football club back.
Well overdue bud.

-
The 1976 5-1 win was the most amazing 45 mins I've seen at VP, but last night was the most amazing 90 mins I've seen. Barkley replacing Conor probably added 2 maybe 3 goals to the scoreline, thought he was immense.
-
Listened to MOMS podcast on Ross Barkley, that was aired right after the Stoke game.
I can recommend that experience! Its such an accurate analysis on what I could mean if Ross slots into that midfield and things start bouncing off him..
Jack, Mcginn , Watkins, Liuz, Trez...you can hear the hope and excitement... They are excited but of cause they can't predict what would happen on Sunday.
You can tell that they thought Liverpool would be to hard...but there is that hope that it will be a good performance...that we are stronger then last year.
Then with that Wonderful 7-2 game in hindsight while you listen....you smile all day. :) Do that instead of some pundit doom and gloom on the Liverpool performance.
Enjoy how this ignites Villa much better story and looking forward to how MOMS feel AFTER that game.
-

My point of view with this is that its for ME. I would watch it over and over again - Football porn. The most complete 90 mins from a Villa team in many a year. My 1994 and 1996 cup wins recorded on VHS have worn out.
-

Barkley replacing Connor might well have removed 2-3 goals from Plops attack as well. Their press was non existent for most of it due to the physical presence of our midfield. Whist Connor is decent with the ball, he is a powderpuff in midfield defensively.
Although was it with Barkley and SJM where they got in each others way on a tackle and the ball pinged out to Firminio for their second?
-
Still on a high and its Monday afternoon surrounded by glum faced Foxes giving it to me large
on the Friday before. Up yours!!!!
Some observations -
When the team sheet was announced I was surprised Barclay started as I thought Conor was good the last game. I thought he may ease him in a bit and not be another drinkwater
inspired capitulation against an "elite team" - what the f*** do I know!!
Barclay and Grealish look like their having a ball and have played together for years.
Amazingly my whole family were there to witness history and we all danced round the room 8 times !!
This result was a long time in coming for the torment we've endured from these wa***rs.
We can go into any game and the opposition will now fear us.
We've taken that step up now from fingernails hanging on the edge to fists in the fight and its only been 3 games. We are the real deal.
Souness - more like Sourness - what a dinosaur, retire his ass.
If this comes out on DVD - will be first in the queue to purchase the whole 90mins - unless one of you bright buttons can get the whole download?
Taking the kids on saturday to pick up their shirts - how proud!!!
Martinez-Cash-Taggart-Konsa-Mings-McGinn-Luiz-Barclay-Trezeguet-Grealish-Watkins - welcome to the LEGENDS club lads.
Grealish - my Grandson will be called Jack, no two ways about it.
Dean Smith - I should be kicked in the knackers for my Smith out shite last season.
At 4-1 I thought they could come back and we fold for 4-4 but the stunner from Barclay and their heads dropped.
I love you Villa.

Go and have a look where Luiz is when that happens. Normally he'd be in there, but when the ball broke Firminion was able to run straight at the defence through a space normally occupied by Douggie.
Not a criticism of him at all, just more evidence of how important he's become in how we play - in that the one time they got a free run at the defence in a central position was when HE was out of position.

I heartily agree Lew, but the eleven one against Charlton runs them close.

Just watched the game again. The result really didn’t flatter us at all, and it could and should have been 10. A quite outstanding performance that I’m sure we’re all really proud of.
Now wouldn’t it be great if we matched the season the last time we thrashed Liverpool at Villa Park back in 76/77??

In 76/77 out title challenge foundered due to too many fixtures in the spring and a relatively poor away record. I'll stand corrected. but from memory I think we had the best home record in the division certainly in terms of goals scored.
-
I had a look at the table for 76-77 we scored 55 at home conceeding only 17
Away scored 21 conceeded 33
I forgot that Spurs were relegated that season.

We were so exciting that season. If we'd had had a stronger squad to cope with an injury crisis and fixture pile up caused by two League Cup Final replays we could well have won the league.

Very good this week.
-
Watched it back three or four times now, almost willing to believe it actually happened.
-
Guessing it will be a while before anyone else tries the high line against us without a full and effective press.
Our problems will be more against disciplined sides who defend deep or park the bus (like Sheffield Utd).
-
my two favourite goals (and there was a large choice)
were Watkins third (just loved typing that) the header
i know his second was a cracker and great to watch, but i just loved him being in the box at the right time to head that one in from 3 yards
how long have we been waiting for a true goal paoacher of our own to do exactly that
the other one was Grealish's last goal, you know the seventh (ha ha)
it was just a sheer piss take
as soon as he was through you were 100% positive he was going to score
but the way he just calmly chipped it in as if it were some sort of showboating training match was brilliant
-

It was all about positioning and timing. Andre Green should look at that but I guess it's all about natural instinct and gifted ability.

From what I've read he's not made a PL match day squad this season so perhaps he wasn't there? However how many of them might have it no one knows. I wouldn't have much faith in just a temperature check myself.

Watkins second for me, the build up was great, the pass was sublime and then he made what was still a difficult chance look like it was the simplest of tasks to turn Gomez and place it into the top corner.
-
Don’t know about anyone else but I think I’ve watched that you tube vid of the Dublin lad over 10 times now. It’s so funny and a perfect example of why not to gloat at others misfortune too much. Liverpool fans do like to gloat a lot, you could say they have plenty to gloat about but in this case with his berating of Man Utd beforehand the outcome is so sweet.

even better was the fact there were 3 Villa players on the edge of the 6 yard box, all ahead of the defenders.

Yep, and Watkins is so important to that. He looks great at holding the ball up and drawing defenders. He helped to create so much space for Barkley on Sunday. (Liverpool's high line helped, of course.)

Same here. Would love to see any extended highlights like there used to be.

My Liverpool supporting FB friends (well all four of them) seem to have disappeared. Must be on the 7-2 shift.

Will this thread get a sticky?

Wouldn't that would be seem a bit small time? 2 weeks should be more than sufficient. ;)

Different camera angles on this, and it's great.
Agree. It’s really good. With the piped in crowd noise on the commercial TV coverage, it’s difficult to appreciate the lack of any atmosphere in the stadium with no fans. Has much more of a practice match feel to it. Just my opinion and it probably won’t be popular, but I can’t see we’d have got 7 past Liverpool in front of a bouncing full house. Who knows? Strongly suspect the freaky results all round are partially due to lack of crowds. Haven’t been to VP in years, but I reckon when Liverpool dragged it back to 2-1, the crowd would’ve got edgy and the end result may have been somewhat different. I’m just guessing really. But as it stands the records will show Villa 7 - 2 Liverpool. I’ll take that any day of the week! It’s a bit different for me because I can’t go anyway living in Aus, so can only watch on Optus Sport. I do still miss going and it’s a lot harder when we’re doing well, especially after a match like that.
-
Much as I enjoyed this monstering of the champions of the universe, I would have preferred if Man U were the victims.
-
their turn will come
-
I see we’re blaming the lack of fans which spur Liverpool on but on the same note for not getting on our backs so we can flourish?
So is the same reason Liverpool played a very on form Arsenal off the pitch last week.
-
I think the high scoring and strange results are down to a bunch things, with the lack of crowds being one small part.
-

Ian with my post, I wasn't blaming anything on anything. Truth is we don't know, maybe the players can explain the freaky results. I know they all come out and say they miss the fans being there and they probably do to an extent. Seems to be a lot less pressure on them now though with an empty ground. With Villa there's a massively high expectation, which if we're honest has probably been unwarranted for much of the last 10 or so years. Just seems to me like it would be a lot less pressure on our team/squad without the fans. It's a weird one, because we all know what it's like when the ground is bouncing and we think we make a difference. Especially when we win. I'm not saying for a minute we wouldn't have won with fans in the ground, just questioning whether it would have been 7-2. Maybe with fans in the ground we'd have got a few more that we maybe should have scored and they'd have got a few more. 12-5 maybe? Who knows - it just seems weird.
-
And yet we still got smashed 3-0 at home by Manure as standard last season. It’s too easy to blame lack of crowds. It’s the same for both sides as well. Every home crowd in the country gets on their teams backs if they aren’t doing well. It just so happens it happens to the big teams less as they tend to be winning more often.
I think we’ve just caught a team completely by surprise who looked to me like they thought they just had to turn up for a routine win and we never let them settle for a minute. If Mane and Alisson would have played I genuinely still think we would’ve won but maybe not by 7-2!

I was annoyed when they stopped putting extended highlights on YouTube for most of the prem games. Turns out they're now on the VillaTV website instead.

Whilst I don't fully rule out no crowds being a factor, there are freak results in every season. It is just that they are spread out around the whole season normally.
This link (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Premier_League_highest_scoring_games) shows games with 9 or more goals in (we make it on there now) and biggest win margins (going down to 7). As you can see that they occur a few times a season for both types of high scoring. The 7 goals scored in a game happen a lot more commonly still. It could well be lots of things happening from the cluster of high scoring games are all at the start, players are not practicing and training the same ways, new players coming in are not bonding properly which would definitely show in defence. And as for Pool, complacency AND their tactics have been found out maybe? Barca was one of the first teams that used to press high and occasionally they would be found out and ship goals as the press failed in games sometimes.

It's the results that matter. Bollocks to ground conditions. I bet you if we had lost all 3 no one would have said it's because of lack of fans it would have been "they are shit" so whilst the scoreline v Liverpool may be bordering on freakish, result is not. We deserve what we have so far.
-
Sunday's result was because we got at them from the off, got in front, forced them to chase the game, and then a team was have been so used to playing games on their terms didn't know how to react in that situation.
Couple that with us playing with unbelievable verve and there you have it.
It will become clearer once we repeat it several times in the coming months.
-
I'll be happy for everybody to put it down as a fluke, if it means more teams underestimate us.

I was actually worried when we scored so early, as I thought "oh God, we're going to have to try to hang on for all of the match now." How wrong I was, they went at it like a hungry man at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Yes as if eat out to help out was still in full swing and they’d ordered extra helpings of waffles and cream.
-
Not sure whether anyone has already mentioned this, and I know that there have been lots of comparisons with the 5-1 game, but it also feels similar in some ways to the Everton 6-2 game. Last fixture of the weekend, on the telly, we were big underdogs having only just stayed up the season before, Everton were still, just, covered by their mid-80s heyday glow. It sort of announced us to the rest of the league as a team to be taken seriously.
-
I think getting on the front foot so early with the goal and then having Barkeley pushing up onto their defence as well kept us on the front foot. The tactics that had been worked out seemed to click for the entire team and it appeared mentally as if they said to themselves collectively "we can do this lot". And so they went on and did it.

We now have vastly better players in the critical positions and maybe now we are playing the way the manager wanted last season and the players can actually deliver

I think I have seen it mentioned a couple of times. And a previously slated player Ormondroyd won us over that day with his wing wizardry. Fast forward, Trez is today's Ormo!

I'd still like to see another nippy striker brought in. There's no way Wesley can do what Watkins can.

True, but I could see SJM and RB being even more effective with Wesley as the pivot.
Different styles, different players ... hopefully, the same outcome.
Having some variety of approach will be - in itself - a significant step forwards.

Haven't read all 37 pages but has anyone posted the video of the goals set to Partridge's infamous football commentary? It's uncanny how they all fit (was hoping we had done something to fit the "And another one!" quip and we did!).

No. Please do!

I’m really hoping that is true what Allen c said
first time for donkeys years we put out a team of players who you would expect belong in the top half of the premier league
and it makes all the difference
when Barkley got the ball his first response was to go forward with it
in the first half he went charging through midfield and Van Dijk took him out and got booked
no way would you have seen Hourahane doing that
to play on the front foot you need players who are more comfortable on the ball and don’t look for the non risk option
we had that on Sunday

It's like the players are such massive fans of Alan that they played, scored and celebrated in that exact manner to fit his commentary!
-
I'm still in shock from Sunday night. What a team performance, what effort, drive, determination, technique, tactics, the only thing missing was the fans. I honestly believe with the addition of a quality winger we could put together a real challenge into the top 10. Whatever happens it looks to be an entertaining season.
Obviously one swallow does not a summer make but as I mentioned to a Danish Liverpool fan I know, I can't see either of us fighting relegation this season.

If you want to enjoy yourself take a little trip down memory lane and revisit the match thread. Zero stress, but enjoy the tension and trepidation turn to joy, unbridled elation to sheer astonishment and disbelief. It’s a beautiful journey.

And I just thought we'd played well.
What I don't get about this idea is how they think it helps them? The grass at Villa park met the standards required or the ref wouldn't have allowed the game to go ahead so all that's really happening is clubs are being told to leave their grass a bit longer to beat liverpool. They'd be much better served accepting we got our tactics right and they made a bit of a mess of theirs.

Sky were apparently trying to work out why Souness was constantly shouting at Salah to run faster during the first half..
Due to his half time comments we now all know why he was shouting “Flymo! Flymo!“

Pretty sure our Marketing bods are happy, the 2m17s highlights on Youtube have been watched over 5.3 million times since Monday. That is one serious number even if I account for about a half of it. Okay, one more time..

Is anyone aware of the comments Klopp was supposed to have made last season about Villa being just a pub team without Grealish? I mention this because following our great 7-2 victory no one from what I've seen on here has mentioned it. This was just before we beat their kids in the cup.

Yeah, Klopp has too much class to say or probably even think that. I vaguely recall him being very complimentary of the club/ground when they won late on at VP last season.

Klopp would not say that. Bentiez did about Everton and Mourinho certainly would say that type of bollocks

Cheers. Thanks for the information re Klopp. I couldn't find any other reference to the comment so I did wonder. I'd been googling randomly and it came up. I'm glad as I hadn't disliked him until I read it.

Different camera angles on this, and it's great.
They should have started the music off from from where it finished after each goal as they could have got through the whole song. Mind you, if we had put away all our chances, they could have played the whole bloody album.

Back at work for the first time in months and first thing I get is “eh 7-2, what about that. Bet you couldn’t believe it, lucky Villa bastards”
The joy of not smiling and not rising to the bait by replying “we’re Aston Villa, we don’t need to gloat” and seeing the nothingness in their eyes is a thing to behold.

There a Claret and Blue podacst where they have an indepth look at how Villa won this match. They have a guest on from the Liverpool side - his analysis is far better than most of the Villa journalists we have to put up with. It's mostly stuff we all saw for oursleves but the guy speaks well and well worth a listen for the Liverpool perspective.
