I'm trying so hard to give the guy some modicum of sympathy...but I can't. Waster of all wasters in quite possibly the best-paid squad of chancers, bluffers and lazy f***ers ever to stain the Vills Park pitch, one of which is now a pundit on MOTD because of his "ability" on the pitch. That relegation still hurts.

Very good article.

some of those players will never be forgiven for that season.

This guy sure can write. Didn't think I'd ever be arsed reading an article about Zog ever again but I enjoyed that.
And what a vanity signing by McLeish. Between Zog, Given and Jenas, he signed three players on big money who never matched that in their contribution, two of whom on long contracts that were never going to be matched elsewhere. At least he gave us Hutton, I guess.
-
Much like with Ireland, most on here were very happy with the signing at the time.
-
Don't think he ever played a pro game again after leaving us.
Can remember Sunderland taking him on trial and then a French club was going to sign him but there was some heart trouble and he had to retire (cue posts saying he retired in 2011!)
Had a few good games a year but was a massive downgrade on Young. McLeish tried to sign him for SHA the year before. Seems an enigmatic character with no interviews since he retired giving his side of the story.
The Athletic did a profile piece on him a few weeks ago saying he gave money to the young players for cleaning his boots so perhaps not all bad but certainly odd mentality.

All that shit and attitude I will actually overlook for the time free kick v Spammers.
We were in big shit.e

bit of a shambles of a decade to be honest

He was very much like Ireland; bags of talent and couldn't be arseed to use it.
-
I know it was tallest dwarf territory, but Ireland rightly won player of the season during his time here. McLeish was the only manager that got a tune out of him.
-
One of my all time least favourite footballers. Few players get me quite as annoyed as he does even though we've had some wasters over the years. I think it's because of what could have been with him. Fuck him, the talent wasting, useless lazy bastard.
-
MON bought Ireland. McLeish bought Given, N'Zogbia, Hutton, Enda Stevens, Jenas on loan and Robbie Keane on loan. The only positives from McLeish's reign were Keane's goals keeping us up and the service Alan Hutton gave to the club.

I knew someone who taught him how to play the piano. She said he was a nice guy and into property - think he has a few different properties across Europe.
Apparently he kind of gave up at Villa and knew the crowd didn’t like him! She kind of thought that he was too sensitive but did care. Well at least in his first couple of years. Lends support to him preferring being the big fish in a small pond!

M'ON had left before Ireland was signed.
