Liverpool to win but hopefully we make it competitive (3-1 or 3-2) with Ollie getting on the scoresheet rather than a trouncing. Would settle for a point from this or the Leicester game.

I think we can sneak a draw. We should have won the game at Villa Park last season. We actually didn't do that badly at their place. This will be our biggest test along with games against Man City. We will derive so much confidence from a strong performance. We have seen they can be vunerable at the back. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain from this. Every pundit will talk about them before the game and rightly so. We have to earn that. But last night has nothing to do with Sunday. It's going to really tough but we can get something.

Us 5-1 Them.

Watkins (2), Grealish, McGinn.  Them to get one back to make it 4-1.

Then Ross Barkley to come on as a sub and finish the game off with 5 minutes to go.

You can but hope.

not expecting a win or even a draw

but I’d actually be happy if we competed with them and didn’t look totally outclassed
Maybe took the game to them at times and generally did something like what Leeds did

we are capable look at last years match at VP and we have better players now who have been saved for this very game
A humiliation of the Man City 6-1 proportions are the last thing we need

this is the game where we see how far we have come with the newish team members
0-2 loss but hopefully with lots of positives

I long for the day when we can look forward to fixtures with genuine optimism, or even expectation, that we should get something from it.

But right now, given this stage of our development, it's a free hit.  Anything we get is a bonus.  I'm going for 1-3.

Going to be a good test of where we are. While we have two clean sheets so far I haven't been overly convinced of our defensive set up and the midfield cover in front of it. Hoping for a spirited display anyway and I do think we will create chances and score. But I fear the gulf in class on the pitch will also be reflected on the scoreline. Villa 2 Liverpool 4.....Matt Targett to limp off around min 70..

Aren't they obligated to complete the fixture? Orient had to forfeit against Spurs last week because they had too many players in isolation.

Up to 25 is only over-21 players. Nothing to stop them selecting youth players. Better still, just award us the match like they did to Tottenham when this happened to Leyton Orient.

Davis will not score.

Why thank you.
So I say we will get a result and Watkins for his first league goal.
Villa haven't conceded yet and we are very strong in restricting shots.
Would like to have 5 attackers push on to Liverpool High back line and play with progressive attacks.

But actually Smith will have a plan to expose their full backs and also we should have good opportunities

Hope Mane gets well but some fortune there for us ! As he always seems to score so good he's not playing. Maybe there should be others.

Well looking at social media it would now it would appear that one positive should be grounds for a fixture postponement.

Apparently if you have 13 fit players you have to play although that might be a regulation from UEFA that premier league hasn't adopted so not sure but don't really see games being called off.

I think it’s extremely unlikely we’ll get a positive result, but I think it’s virtually impossible if we go behind. I think the only way to win/draw is to get a lead and essentially hold on.

Will be tough, but you never know. Smith tends to stick faithfully to winning sides, so will be interesting if he throws Barclay straight in or not and if he does whether it will automatically be hourihane that drops out or whether he’ll throw a curve ball and drop Trez , play Barclay a bit wider and hot lips a bit deeper alongside luiz

I'm going with 2-1 to us too.

Grealish with the winner in stoppage time after Trezeguet put us one up, but  they equalised with a pen in the 90th minute.
Klopp sent off after the final whistle, Henderson seen in tears leaving the pitch.

Milner makes a heartfelt plea in the post match interview on Sky asking Dean Smith to bring him home , he'll play for free just to wear the claret and blue one last time.

Tammy Abraham phones TalkSport afterwards to say if we let him take the penalties he's available to play alongside Ollie and Jack in a front three.

I think Trez will almost certainly start ahead of Traore.  Did you see the Stoke game?  Traore was hopeless, whilst Trez played his part in a very good away win against Fulham.  Traore may well go on to be great for us, but he hasn't played his way into a starting spot yet in my opinion.

Has to be Trez over Traore but I’d like to see Barkley start, although I don’t think Hourihane deserves to be dropped, just a big difference in class and experience which has to be progress over sentiment.

Traore looked very short of match fitness and sharpness. He is better than Trez and will eventually force his way in. Barkley is just a better player than Conor and I’m in the Conor fan club. I hope Barkley starts but I can also see Dean staying loyal to the side that won at Fulham.

Just as a point of interest. If a Liverpool player brings one of our players down with Covid-19 in the box is it a penalty?

I'm not totally sure, but from how I'm interpreting the latest guidelines I believe it's a penalty for man united.

Thanks for the clarification ;)

I’ll do this once early season. If I’m wrong , I promise I
Won’t post again on match threads.

Jack limped off in  training. If he’s not fit, Traore starts.
Barkley starts instead of Hourianne

I do wonder whether DS might throw a curveball and go for 4 midfielders with Barkley starting alongside McGinn and Hourihane with Doug behind and Grealish just off Watkins. Like this:

                                                       Doug

                                    SJM         Barkley      Hourihane

                                                       Jack

                                                   Watkins

Would sacrifice width but then would give licence for the FBs to get forward which is key in this type of game. Liverpool are very strong with whichever three they'll play in midfield.

Probably unlikely as Barkley hasn't played much for Chelsea so match fitness won't be great but he did throw in Drinkwater from the start v Man. City when his match fitness was just as bad as could be expected from a pro player.

I’ve met Tayls a couple of times and he’s a top lad.

I thought maybe this. Maybe one of the issues preventing it, is there attacks tend to start from their full backs, so our wide men potentially have a very big job, so pulling everything into the middle may play into their hands?

He is perfect for a Steve Bruce side mate.  Way too defensive going forward and not particularly great at defending. Often goes missing.  It comes to something when a fairly ordinary Matt Targett is streets ahead of him.  Villa's weakest area.

There's rightly a bit optimism about this one. McGinn is starting to look like his old self, Grealish is playing well and Watkins is due a goal in the league. With Mane being out, it's a good chance for us. That's said, I'll for 2-2.

Same starting eleven as against Fulham but use of our substitutes paramount.

Something like, Ross Barkley on for Hourihan after 60 minutes and Traore on for Trez after 70 minutes. One other substitution when and as required. Game management so important against this lot. They always come strong at the end.

Also, the ultimate test for our focus and concentration.

We can do it.

1-1.  :)

They key to their success has been not having probably the best front three in Europe miss many games, so it'll be interesting to see how they cope without Mane, who I think is the best of the three.

That’s a good option, especially with Cash now in the team and one strength of Taggart is his link up and forward play. He actually creates a fair few chances.

I like the look of that too. I know RB hasn’t played that much recently, but I’m sure his fitness is light years ahead of Drinkwater.

That’s as big a deal as Mane. He’s a brilliant keeper. We may still lose but we have to have a go at this lot. They are shaky at the back anyway and this helps.

We have to play with the intensity that Leeds are showing. Only way to stop these top sides is to have a go at them. If we play our sideways and backwards style, we will lose out. If we can put them under some pressure, I think we have a realistic chance of a good result. Simple..when you’re typing!!

Adrian is crap too. Should be shooting on sight if Allisson is out. I think key will be the battle down our left (Targett/Grealish v (TAA/Jota). If we can keep TAA on the back foot and get Grealish in behind him then we could have a real advantage.
