I was sat in the upper tier of the main stand in line with the goal at the Leicester end.

Shilton is quoted as saying "It could have been a goal...there was definitely no mark on the post afterwards. "
Not quite sure if he meant the post or the stanchion there. The ball went straight up the other end and Leicester put the ball in our net, in the ensuring pandemonium at our end Shilton was then inside his net wiping the mud off the stanchion.

The Leicester goal was disallowed for offside.
Clearly, an issue with McMahon's 'goal' was that visibility was so poor as it was a night game and the weather was horrible. Does anyone know why this game kicked off on a Saturday evening and why it couldn't have kicked off at three o'clock, as normal?

I've a vague recollection that it was something to do with The Grand National. Strangely the following season Leicester benefitted from another unseen goal when the ball hit the net support and bounced out versus Portsmouth.

Yes, their stanchions at Filbert Street were very shallow. At least on this occasion, there was photographic evidence for the 'goal'.

I was at the opposite end and in line , could not believe it was not given.

I still remember the fuss around this from my dad and grandad on that Saturday night. As a 7 year old Villa mad kid I was distraught.

Yes, they actually broadcast a report on the game on that night's Match of the Day, detailing the highly contentious decision.
