Wilder will have Sheffield United fired up after their opening day defeat against Wolves, and they had an excellent away record last season.  First game in for us, I would be delighted with a draw from this one.  1-1 for me.

Want us to come out firing in this. In the 0-0 two months ago we were pretty tentative but still had 3-4 good chances to score (they pretty much all landed to Davis though).

2-1 win. Sheffield United were pretty poor v Wolves and went out of the cup tonight so they will struggle to come close to what they achieved last season.

He also tipped us to win more games than we did at the start of last season, so not good form.

1-1 for me. They will be up for it after their opening day loss and after the phantom goal that was but wasn't, and I think we'll be a little bit rusty.

A pleasant change to read a bit of positivity this morning from Nick Ames in the Guardian’s ‘Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend’

Villa’s strengthened spine on view
Emiliano Martínez is expected to make his debut for Aston Villa against Sheffield United, capping a whirlwind three months for the goalkeeper. When football restarted after the Covid-19 shutdown, Martínez was widely viewed as a competent if unremarkable deputy to Bernd Leno. This week he was transferred for £20m, to considerably mixed feelings around Arsenal, and those who backed him throughout a difficult decade in north London are convinced that he will quickly become established as one of the league’s best in his position. His arrival should strengthen Villa’s spine significantly and, given they also wish to sign Bertrand Traoré and Milot Rashica, the big signings are unlikely to end there. Villa look bright, ambitious and well poised to push on from last term’s great escape.

I think we should be targeting six points from our first two league games. That's not disrespectful to Sheffield Utd, who were miles better than us last season, but it's a home game against a team outside the established "big/rich" 6 so we should be looking for a win.

Chomping at the bit for this one. The fact that we'll have given most teams a two game start and will still probably be out of the bottom three should fire us up. Get three points, be on the first page of the teletext table, and look up for the rest of the season.

Traore to come on later I expect.  Still need a new central midfielder I feel.

Our boys must be just dying to get this started. I think we will come out strong and win the game. The confidence in the manner we stayed up is worth 10 goals that we won’t concede this time around. Add to that I expect us to be much better in the final third could see a 15/16 goal swing. That should be solid enough for a mid table finish.

I really really want us to be more comfortable with the ball and retain it better than last season

I know that all depends on the quality of players we have but I thought that was one of the things that defined Smiths teams
rabbits it’s in the headlights far to often especially when pressed

I’m hoping for improvement on that this season and that will bring better results to boot

All of that and not depending on Jack to do everything/our one tactic. Hopefully Craig Shakespeare can help change things on the coaching side to. That said, Dean seems to be more involved, leaving the transfers to Purslow and Lange. Everything crossed.

When you read the pre-match thread and realise after all the excitement and optimism we are likely to start with Hourihane in midfield again.  Not that I don't like him, but the with the general squad improvement going on one would have hoped he may have been relegated to a non-starter.

I can't see that they've got much up front to worry us.  Sharp is well past it and hasn't scored since Adam was a lad.  Mousset is injured, and McBurnie doesn't get many.  Norwood is a good player, but stick SJM on him and tell him to kick him if he gets too big for his boots and we'll be good.  3-0, fuck off Sheffield United, and fuck off Hawkeye.

Wasn't it £12m rising to £16m with add-ons? Either way I wouldn't expect Cash to play tonight especially having been handed his arse against Man Utd in the friendly. I hope we ease him in and not throw him in the deep end if he's not ready. As far too many of our players found out last season, it's a huge step up.

When you read the pre-match thread and realise after all the excitement and optimism we are likely to start with Hourihane in midfield again.  Not that I don't like him, but the with the general squad improvement going on one would have hoped he may have been relegated to a non-starter.

And Targett at left back....

Doesn't take a genius to recognise where the bulk of Sheff Utds play will be directed this evening.... At every opportunity in Bramall Lane last season they switched the play to target their right wing back against Targett. Eventually taking Jack out of the game by forcing him to help Targett out.

I'd be interested to see what condition McGinn is in this evening. Hope he has used the break wisely and a far more athletic player emerges today. Finished the season at 10 so that's where I expect him tonight with Trez and Jack either side.

A win would be great, a highly fortunate technology enabled one...even better

There hasn't been a single draw in this round of matches so I fully expect us to buck that trend.

1-1

80-1 on a Villa 3-1 win with Watkins scoring first...
I stuck £2 on Grealish to score first and either Aston Villa to win 2-1 or Draw 2-2 at 50/1 even though I don't really think there will be that many goals.

I'm going 3-0 to us.  Defensively we're better than we were and we've also got a striker.

Is there a book going on how many times Sky will mention the incident from the last time we played Sheff U?
