Job done. Lovely goal by Jack and KD. Great to see Ollie get off the mark too.

Friendly paced game. Grealish head and shoulders above anybody, even in 2nd gear. Watkins has goid positional sense, Ramsey very calm and positive.

Happy enough, Grealish was brill, particularly first half.

Lansbury was chronic, Jota poor and the crossing suspect at times.

Watkins looked good, so did Ramsey.

Pleased with that. Very useful workout. Quality told in the end and we lacked a bit of pace to break beyond the lines, but Burton defended in numbers and well.

Quality goals. Watkins has great anticipation and I'm delighted for Davis. Pleased with Ramsey too.

God it made me pine for Crewe away last year.

Ollie scoring on competitive debut, and Keinan off the mark first game of the season - that'll do nicely.

One thing I do hope we discover during the season is finding new ways to get the ball from the defence to the attack. Too much sideways-sideways-sideways-sideways-HOOF. I'd like us to find ways of going through the centre more.

It looks like I'm going to have to get Keinan Vincent Joseph Davis tattooed on my arse.

A good shop window for those you would expect to move on. Lansbury, AEG were awful. Ramsey decent showing, showed a bit of promise.

I was certain it was going to penalties.  A lot of possesion but not as easy as the scoreline suggests, I thought Burton tried hard and in fairness got through a couple of times.  Class won through in the end.

Ramsey the big positive.
Jack gave a masterclass in wide play and showed he is worth every single penny to us.

The shit list now consists of
Taylor
Jota
Lansbury
AEG

These lot are nowhere near good enough.

Hause is close to being on my shit list, but not quite.
He looked like a big, awkward, ambling CH, which is not what is needed in the PL.

Dougie showed his class in few mins he was on.

Given there were only 3 people in that team who will start on Monday I think that's a decent performance. We got caught treating it like a friendly in the first minute but after that we were pretty dominant, even with a few players having a really average night.

Jack was head and shoulders above everyone else, Watkins looked exactly what we needed up front, Davis came on and put himself about, got involved and got a very good goal and Ramsey looked like he's not far from being involved regularly.

Elmo was probably our worst player with Lansbury and Taylor not far ahead.

I thought that was unnecessarily going to penalties until Lansbury finally contributed for Jack’s great finish.

However we really didn’t make the 17 year old keeper work enough, although we were deserving winners in the end.

Defence ... worrying.

Don't forget that of the 6 deepest players (GK, defence and DM) in the only Mings is likely to start the next game. Them looking a bit out of sorts isn't much of a problem. Awful from Taylor and Elmo for the goal though.

This game might not have seemed all that important to us as a club, but it was massively emotional for me.  My brother, and very infrequent poster on here, passed away on the 28th.  This is the first game i've watched without at least being on the end of the phone.  When Grealish scored I broke down.  This was and is more than a football club to us both.  UTV.

Thought Jota was ok but Lansbury was a different level of awful. Walked around the pitch throughout, complete farce. Thought Smith was having a laugh giving him 90mins, trying to show him up perhaps. Ironic that he got an assist. Thought Nakamba was very average and AEG is fast running out of chances too.

Delighted for Davis and good for Watkins to get off the mark. Unbelievable from Jack again.

Two evenly matched sides, they made us work for the result but in the end over £200m spend and Jack came through. Really glad we had this game before we kick off the season, it was a real wake up call to the hard work that's needed for the season. Tonight was so much like last season but we have to hope we can step it up a gear or three with better players joining.

Delighted for Ollie and Davis to get off the mark. Ramsey impressed first half, Jack still playing like he doesn't trust anybody else in the team. Douglas looks like his form from end of season will carry through to the new one, love the way he floats around but there's plenty to do at BMH. Tactics would be a great place to start.

Overall, we played very much like we did last season, the good news is we have better players to come in. Sheff Utd will be another tough one.

All good in the end, Watkins movement was very good and already seems head and shoulders above the movement of the forwards last year. Jack obviously class. So pleased for Davies.luiz looked classy when he came on.
Thought El Ghazi and Lansbury on the basis of that should be no where near the first team squad, really poor. Apart from that thought considering Cash wasn’t playing, no Guilbert is interesting.

In fairness to Tayor, poor as he is, I think he was looking for the ball to come to him from the other side and could probably be forgiven for thinking Jack may have been held up by a defender when; as I saw it, Jack played a beautiful first time ball that completely confused Taylor and, may have confused many a better player with its impudence.

And possibly on the way out......Nakamba and AEG. Jota actually looked a bit fitter and stronger than last season in his cameo, decent shot that went just over. Put himself in the shop window at least. Lansbury, I'm struggling to think of a lazier player we have ever had. Diabolical level of fitness and commitment. He will struggle for any championship team to take him on.

Very surprised to see Elmo start, was reasonably solid but doesn't say much for Guilbert's future that he was on the bench.

Strange game when Lansbury hardly shows anything and then ended up with two assists. (Actually was it him or Luiz that played Davis through?)

Really pleased for Davis to get on the scoresheet, hopefully it will do his confidence a world of good.

I thought Taylor looked like he'd been told to try and play a bit more football going forward - he wasn't his usual panic merchant three legged donkey impersonator when crossing the half way and it got him an assist.

El Ghazi's confidence is shot, perhaps from that awful miss at Everton. DS could've played Matty Cash on the right wing and Guilbert at right back? Cash started as a winger at Forest. Surely that combination would've been more effective?

Decent result, some nice stuff going forward, a less static midfield and attack than last year. Hopefully that’s what’s being instilled into the whole squad. A glorified Pre- season friendly in truth.

What did concern me a little was Mings. On one occasion he lost the ball, failed to make any effort to get back and was covered by Hause. The centre of defence, against a third division mid table team seemed to be lacking in bite, effort and control. I hope that’s down to where we are Pre season.

For all the criticism Taylor takes he looked ok last night. The tackle he made to block the shot and the cross to Watkins for the opener were pretty good.

I thought Nakamba had a decent game, especially with Lansbury doing not a lot alongside him.

Ramsey didn’t look out of place and had a decent game.

Lansbury, AEG and Taylor were anonymous apart from 2 of them providing the assists.

Ollie and Jack played well, I’m glad they got their goals and also that Keinan got one too, will help the confidence no end.

Has anyone arrested Hause and Angela for stealing a living yet?

So sorry to hear that timeout, hope the good cry helped in some way.
Thoughts with you and your family.

Nakamba was okay, but still managed to give the opposition one or two chances.
Ramsey does look very comfortable on the ball and was always there as a passing option.
Hause - not great, but not a total waste.

I agree AEG, Ange and Elmo looked very out of place last night.

I'd like to have seen one or two of our younger prospects get some game-time, rather than - apparently- using the game as a shop window to show our unwanted wares to others: I don't think I saw anything that would attract me to any of them!
Does anyone honestly think that any club will take Ange, given his lack of interest and high wages?! - we have another Micah / Habib on our hands with him, watching his contract time out whilst picking up obscene amounts of weekly dosh.

Sorry for your loss TOBB, condolences to you.  We lost our son-in-law last week and even though he was a Man U fan had plenty of chat when games were on, so I missed him last night too.

Nakamba managed to get horrendously robbed in one first half incident which almost certainly would have been punished higher up the food chain.

I noticed in the post match analysis Darren Bent saying Lansbury had impressed him........

They're probably mates. Lansburys appearance last night was a shop window game for him. I don't think we will see much of him in a Villa shirt again but if he's here for a while they at least need to keep him match fit.The big problem would be his contract situation. No one will buy him and match his current contract. It is best for both parties if a loan deal can be sorted while his contract runs down.

How I saw
Nakamba got up to speed second half as first half he was ropey
His last twenty had plenty of energy so fitness wise no issue and he was winning the ball well as the game went on.

Conversely Ramsey started off the brightest and prominent of players in midfield but second half faded and did a reckless foul. Plenty of promises and didn't look out of place first half. Good on ball good runs

I thought Elmo was just great outside of his one ballooned cross he was forray forward and dependable with passes. Plenty of crosses and impressive energy
Davis took his goal showed hunger to get back onside then classy finish. Well played

What I didn't like so much :
El Ghazi on set pieces.

Then when lansbury takes an intelligent corner jack scores!

Disagree on Elmo. He was far too tight to the back post for their goal, terrible positioning. 3/4 other times he was either too tight in field or too far up the pitch and had to be covered by Nakamba and Hause. On top of that most of his crosses were overhit so even when he found his man I can't think of any that were good scoring chances.

I'd say the same for El Ghazi as well, between the 2 of them we had a huge amount of chances to get crosses in from our right and we never really took advantage.

From the left we never put anything like as many crosses in but we created 3-4 very good shooting positions from there, including the first goal and the one that hit the bar.

Watkins showed great movement. Similar to Darren Bent in the six yard box, but much more involved in general build up play.

My scores on the doors for last night.

Nyland - 7 had pretty much naff all to do other than pick one out the net, still don’t think he’s great with his feet.
Elmo - 5 he was asleep for the first 20 minutes and was out of position several times throughout and a bit good/bad with his crossing, let’s be generous and say rusty.
Hause - 5 I don’t know whether it’s me but the ball seems like a ticking timebomb when he’s in possession. Some good play, some woeful distribution and a nuisance at set pieces.
Mings - 7 one abysmal mistake aside he was solid.
Taylor - 6 not as bad as some of us think but definitely a back up option to Targett.
Nakamba - 6 woeful first half, tentative and sloppy in possession but grew into the game and pressed and tackled well.
Ramsey - 7 impressive debut, good feet, got forward well and good in possession, tired second half but definite promise
Lansbury - 4 why just fucking why. Would have been 3 but for his assist late on.
El Ghazi - 3 absolutely useless as usual, ineffective, powder puff and poor crossing. He’s not good enough for where we want to go, get rid ASAP.
Watkins - 8 nice debut, one goal, hit the bar and his movement in the box is exceptional. Very impressed.
Grealish - 9 MOTM one word superb.

Jota - 6 he buzzed about and looked tidy on the ball
Davis - 7 scored and was a handful
Luiz - 6 not really on long enough but showed his ability with the ball

Overall I thought we looked a bit rusty and some of these players are not up to where we want to be. Still we won and I’d say only 3 or 4 of those players will start against Sheffield United.

I see some pundits are already calling the Villa v Sheffield United game next week 'The Hawkeye derby'.

Is that because the technology failed to see Billy Sharp kick the ball out of our keepers' hands in Feb 2019?

I would like to add my condolonces TOBB, try to remember the positive and carry that memory with you like a torch...

Lovely from Jack, nice goal hangers for Watkins and a calm finish from Keinan.  All in all a decent run out against a decent Burton side.  Better than I expected after the 1st 10 mins.

My biggest bug bear was the players that first instinct is a backwards pass, Taylor, Elmo, Lansbury for example.

It slows our play down hugely, I find it so frustrating.

On the flip side the young chap making his debut in the middle, he always looked for the ball and instinctively turned and ran/passed forward, big hopes for him.

I wasn't amused with Jack playing the quarterback role at times either. If he'd moved to a top 6 club there's no way they'd let him do what the hell he wants. We lose all shape and purpose. Let's just hope it was due to the weakened team selection and the supposedly poor opposition.

Ashley Young in his last season or so used be at the same craic, limiting his effectiveness. In Jack's defence, neither Nakamba or particularly Lansbury seemed to have any interest in getting the ball off the back so in some respects what was he supposed to do. But not a habit Id like to see him repeating.
