Post by: Diablo on September 14, 2020, 09:38:32 AM
Came across this piece from O'Leary, starts off with his time with us and then his time at Leeds (feel free to move  or rename the thread)

Seems like a reasonable summary.

Defo Doug was proper old school.

Madness that we didn't have a general site / facilities manager who could tell him how much brocoli was used

I knew all about the micro management of expenses. An acquaintance of mine was DO'L's best mate outside of football at the time.
The broccoli story is Pythonesque!

I was watching the season review the other day.  He did really well to get us to 6th that first season.  Gavin McCann played on one leg didn’t he.

Doug was absolutely right to ask about the broccoli. After all it was very expensive back then and if players were not eating it Doug didn't want money being wasted and he knew that carrots and sprouts were just as good nutrients  wise.

Whenever Doug Ellis and expenses appear in the same story my mind goes to 'Mosquito Repellent'.  If only this story had come out a few months ago I might have done less itching over the same period period.

Didn't he also "invent" Avocado toast little realising it would become a spendthrift staple of the bourgeoisie?

I suggest renaming it Ex-Arsenal players or Ex-Dirty Leeds managers and moving it to the other football thread.
Am I a bit fickle ?

Kind of reads like the Richard Keyes blog posted by Sexual yesterday. They seem quite similar, Hairy Hands and Pug Nose.

There were other times when he would phone me asking why I’d spent money on petrol at Newport Pagnell service station at midnight the week before. I would have to explain I’d been on the way back from a game in London.

Even African Car Reverser knows you fill up at the supermarket instead of paying an extra 10-15p litre on the motorway ! W*nker !

You have to admit though, that Championship Manager would be far more entertaining if every so often you got a message:

"Your assistant manager has reported that Marvelous Nakamba hasn't eaten all his greens.  What do you want to do?
- Give him a slice of buttered, brown bread toast
- Tell him that if he's not hungry enough to eat his sprouts, he's not hungry enough for pudding either.
- Report him to the chairman"

Issue fine to Marvelous Nakamba?
Reason for fine:

poor performance in last match
dismissal in last match
unprofessional behavior
not eating broccoli
