Hello everybody and welcome to Guess The Goal for 2020/2021! 🥅



This is the introduction to the competition known as Guess the Goal - the minute a goal is scored, at all of the games during this season.

It’s either our goal or an unfriendly one but it’s still a goal. That’s the basis of this  game.


How This Works:


I post a clearly labelled single match thread in Heroes Discussion.  You choose which minute of that match a goal will be scored, posting your guess in there before Kick Off. 

We play home, away and Cup competitions. If there’s a chance this season, we’ll play an Aston Villa Women’s team fixture! 👍

How Many Points Can I Score?


Scoring: spot on the minute - 11 points!!!  (Oh, yes!)

Up to 1 minute away 10 points.

Up to 2 minutes 9 points.

Up to 3 minutes 8 points.

Up to 4 minutes 7 points

Up to 5 minutes 6 points

Up to 6 minutes 5 points

Up to 7 minutes 4 points

Up to 8 minutes 3 points

Up to 9 minutes 2 points

Entering the round 1 point 😁



You need to post a guess identifying any minute of the match between 0 to 90.

   e.g. 5. 13. 29. 34. 48.  57. 61. 72. 86. 90.....

If you want to Guess an extra time goal, it’s 45+ and 90+ .
(Just use the + and don’t worry about which extra minute it is.)


Any goal scored within reach of your guess scores you points!!!




Scores are based on the minute a goal is published as being scored on the BBC.

Rounds are launched up to a week before. Very few overlapping rounds will occur. To avoid these, I will use some very short run-ins, so be prepared!  8)

Results are posted for each match at the end of that thread and tables appear in here.  The final result will be posted here at the end of the season. 

You’re always welcome to post comments and questions about GTG in here, thanks. If it makes more sense in the thread, fair enough!



Really Important Bit

You post just one guess of just one minute in a round.

And

No editing of that post, please. 


For the worried:
If you’ve tripped over your fingers or thumbs (e.g. you’ve accidentally posted 3+ digits, 1 lonely digit, a strange emoji, a gif or a flight of random apostrophes) then leave it alone, post again and tell me that this is your real Guess.  I might even catch on.

For the opportunistic / litigious:
You can’t have a second guess by this method. Your first must be a GTG disaster.

For anybody wondering about the consultation. I thought Guess The Goal could use a bit of tension.

I thought if we had only one guess on any minute/number it would be better, and I still hanker back to that.  (But the present GTG is supreme and totally rules.)


But especially I wanted to keep it to a simple post in a Guess thread.


So, I have considered -



• Putting a list of 0-90+ in a thread somehow (🤪) and me renewing after every few guesses so that you see what is happening with it
• Asking each new poster to copy and paste and add their Guess in numerical sequence so that the players make the list

[iii]Reassigning duplicate guesses to the nearest unadopted numbers (NUN)

Reasoning in reverse order:

If I were working at home all the time as I was during the mini season I would go for the last option, no problem. Any post anytime, bosh. Sorted.

As it is, I am back in the office so what happens if someone goes for an unclaimed number and at the end of the very long day with other potential guesses, I then have to move them? 

Revolution, that’s what. I am a peaceable soul in GuessThe Goal. It’s a game.
No revolutions. Please.

Hi Louzie, I guess you like a challenge, so here's a question that speed reading the rules didn't show the answer for me.....

What happens if there are no goals?

In cup games then this could extend into extra time with the '90+'  guess, and if it goes to penalties then I suppose the first penalty scored is in this category, but what if its a league game with no score even in the 90+ category?

Meantime I'll post a carabao cup (vs Brstol City) guess.

Hello 260475, thanks for the questions.

If there are absolutely no goals at all at any time in the game then everyone who played that round gets a point for guessing. 👍 It’s a tradition.

And, we have a new rule!

Your suggestion that just the first goal counts when a match goes to penalties is spot on!  ::).   Thanks, sorry for the pun.

To make it clear, with cup penalty competitions, whatever the result:

It’s happening in the 90+ minute, so 11 points for the first goal are awarded. That’s it.
It’s the same rule if a 30 minute extra time is played.

PaulTheVillan did the impossible, one would think. In a nine goal match, PTV was the only guesser to go for a non-scoring minute.  :o.   At least you got your point for playing the round.   :)

And finally, as Trevor McDoughnut would say, what about beness? First guess, spot-on a 🥅 on 35 minutes and extra points from 2 other goals as well, giving an inaugural score of... 27 points!   😃

Because some regular Guess The 🥅ers missed Round 27 after a premature disappearance into Match Threads (sorry) I have compensated everyone who has been active in the game since January 1st by adding a point to your total.

Only 2 players out of 37 who posted scored more than 1 in this round, so I think this is fair and I hope you do, too! 

It has not affected the European / Champions League spots.

If i’ve missed anybody, please let me know!

The other idea I had was, if GT🥅 carries on into next season because crowds as we know them are not back by August, what about only one guesser per minute?

The first to post a minute owns that number outright for that round and subsequent guessers have to go for the nearest alternative or change strategy?

It would add a bit more tension but it also means you’d have to read through the guesses so far.

This is just a thought, not a rule at the moment, so I’d like your reactions please. 

Yessss or Noooo,  ☀️or⛈,  🥅 or VAR - or expressed in sentences, if you prefer!  (It’s now that time of the evening when English deserts me.)

A bit of an update...

The Table will be updated before the next Round, Everton v Villa, May 1st.



I can see 4 more fixtures after that on the BBC’s list for May.

That means we still have a game in hand. Villa v Everton is the postponed Round 21, which will be revived as soon as they find a day and time for it.



I note more players would like to keep GT🥅 as it is than change it, so that is what we’ll do.

It’s difficult to see a definite time for full crowds to start again at the moment, so Guess The Crowd could be some way off, yet.  GT🥅 could keep us going for a while, yet.

Great fun Louzie, thanks for all your organising. Better than GTC in my view as more like a fun sweepstake than number crunching / postulating and counting how big the buffer zone between home/away fans might be, what the weather might do, and how many STH's will take their seats.
